SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 07

Graham Kemp’s Christchurch ended their best ever campaign by lifting the League Cup, dominating the closing stages to run out worthy winners. In brief a goal from Sam Griffin gave Christchurch a 23rd minute lead and that was how the game stood at the interval. Warren Kenna levelled the tie with an outrageous 30 yard lob shortly after the resumption. Against the overall run of play Christchurch regained the lead when Ben Osborne rounded Badgers’ Scott O’Rourke following a pinpoint long ball from Mark Smith. Russell Cook was denied at least twice more before Osborne converted a late penalty to make the tie safe. Elsewhere, London was the host for the 30th Summer Olympics, whilst Greece, who hosted the first Olympic games of the modern era was financially “saved” as a result of a Eurozone bailout. It was the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, and who can forget the James Bond parachute jump shown on TV as part of the opening ceremony for the aforementioned sporting festivities, and keeping things MI6, Bond’s Skyfall pressed for top film but missed out to The Avengers. Whitney Houston who appeared in a recent edition of our Newsletter died in February 2011. On the grass, Manchester City won the Premiership and Chelsea again won the FA Cup, this time by the best of three against Liverpool, and also at Wembley the (first) all-Northern League FA Vase final between Dunston UTS and West Auckland Town ended in a 2-0 win for the Tyneside outfit. In local county FA competitions the four cups were decided as below- Dorset Dorchester Town 2-0 Wimborne Town Hampshire Eastleigh 2-0 AFC Totton Wiltshire Calne Town 2-1 Bemerton Heath Harlequins Russell-Cotes Bemerton Heath Harlequins 2-0 Christchurch Former members went down in the battle of the Magpies and two other member clubs battled it out in front of just over 2,300 spectators at St Marys in the Hampshire equivalent, Eastleigh triumphing with goals from Chris Flood and Mitchell Nelson to give the Spitfires’ their first ever Senior Cup Final victory. For only the second time in around 50 years the Russell-Cotes Cup left the county of Hampshire bound for Wiltshire with Bemerton’s 2-0 win over Christchurch in an all-Wessex affair. However on the opposite side of the coin so to speak, in the Wiltshire Senior Cup, the Harlequins conceded two early goals at Chippenham thanks to a Tyler Sibbick penalty in the first minute and a Levi Cox strike on 20, before Danny Young netted six minutes before the break. Unfortunately, ugly scenes after the final whistle took the gloss off the event- the least said the better. Season 2011/12 and the Wessex League’s twenty fifth anniversary -1986-87 seems a long time ago - and much to the good had happened in the period in between. The Premier Division consisted of twenty-two Clubs – no change in number from the previous season – but had lost two and gained two. Poole Town had been promoted to the Southern League while Brockenhurst, founder members of the League, were relegated for the first time. In their place, promoted from Division One, came Downton and Horndean whilst Hamble ASSC had one of their periodic name changes and were now known as GE Hamble. Just five of the Clubs shown in the final Table are no longer with the League -Winchester, Moneyfields and Blackfield & Langley have moved to higher spheres, Hayling United are one of the kingpins of the Hampshire Premier League while Brading withdrew in the close season and returned to the Island League. They had served eight seasons with the Wessex League and finished in fourth place in 2010/11 but problems behind the scenes and financial restrictions caused them to return to their roots so to speak. The League on the field was rather dominated by Winchester City who carried all before them and finished fourteen points clear of Bemerton Heath, their nearest rivals. Both Clubs, along with Moneyfields, topped the one hundred goal mark with Jamie White claiming no less than 51 goals for the Champions. The established partnership of Jack Slade and Joe Sanger accounted for 46 goals between them for Bemerton while the long serving Steve Hutchings topped the Moneyfields charts with 28. At the bottom Laverstock & Ford won their opening game 7-3 but then lost the next three, conceding fourteen goals in the process, and things sadly did not get any better over the course of the campaign.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 07

The Premier Division in season twenty six ended with Winchester, worthy Champions, being promoted to the Southern League while, with Brading withdrawing, only Laverstock & Ford being relegated to Division One. As we will have read above, the League Cup went to Christchurch with a 3-1 defeat of Brockenhurst at Bemerton’s Western Way Ground with the likely favourites, Winchester, falling at the second hurdle. A comfortable 6-2 victory at Whitchurch was followed by a trip to Hamble where they were held to a goalless draw before losing 4-3 in the penalty shootout. In the two National Cup Competitions, the FA Cup and FA Vase, Bournemouth were very much the main flag bearer for the Division, this week we’ll just concentrate on the former. The Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup saw a number of Clubs progress, sadly many at the hands of fellow Wessex League Clubs with the usual restriction on the Draw by the FA, although there were wins against “outside” competition for Alresford and Lymington over Devizes and Sherborne respectively. There was also a much savoured tie on the Island with Newport winning 4-1 at Cowes Sports. In the Preliminary Round no fewer than six Clubs came out on top to progress with four all Wessex ties. Bournemouth, Blackfield, Newport and Brockenhurst ended the hopes of Totton & Eling, Winchester, First Division AFC Portchester and Lymington- the last two being after replays - while Moneyfields defeated near neighbours Gosport Borough and Horndean overcame Bridport at Five Heads Park. The First Qualifying Round saw something of a cull however with only Bournemouth, winners over Newport, and our Division One representatives Whitchurch proving successful over fellow Division One side, Brockenhurst. The Poppies then held Truro City to a goalless draw before going out by the odd goal in five on a midweek evening in Cornwall, whilst the Jamboys went down at first time of asking at Longmeadow against Gloucester City, the story for our Division One sides will be covered next week.

We’ll look at the FA Vase next week. But before then, here is the full FA Vase history for our only (local) club to have participated in every competition since inception in 1974/75- Brockenhurst with some 108 ties played as at the end of 2019/20. Ironically their best season at time of writing was their first experience of the competition disposing of Newbury Town, Cowes (before they linked with Whites Sports), Gosport Borough and Cadbury Heath before a 4-1 home reverse at the hands of Stamford. Last week we mentioned that the Badgers were one of a select few who’d entered each of the Vase competitions, so though it only right to show that record, there’ll be a story running in the next couple of editions covering this achievement.

WHAT A SIDE

…or should that be Waterside. A look at the three teams on the Waterside, within the SO45 postcode area, and how they match against other in the five years from 2004 to 2009 when they all plied their trade in our second tier. There always has to be a winner and by the very nature of the beast a loser as well. Over the five years though there has been little to choose between them, apart from a couple of big wins here and there.

Fawley managed to do the double over both their neighbours this season scoring 14 and just four leaked, Half of those conceded at home against Blackfield. Blackfield were the season whipping boys, failing to get a single point but it was a close thing on the road, losing both by the odd goal in five. The biggest winning margin was a 6-1 win for Fawley at Jones Lane Matt Monk for the hosts but Dan Mackenzie hit a hat trick for the Oilers with Matt Hardiman, Callum Earl and Danny Gibbons also on target on the 27 March.

Again it was Fawley who took the local bragging rights winning all four derby games. Blackfield’s 5-0 win at Hythe saw Adeyemi Oke hit a hat trick whilst Gary Male and Michael Durdey also hit singles. Fawley hit eight without reply on their own patch and only concede two on their travels. Poor Hythe could only find the net on one occasion- in the 4-2 reverse at home against Fawley.

It was a close run thing goals wise in the final year under review with Blackfield this time in the ascendancy locally going undefeated but unable to double up over Hythe who held them to a share of the spoils at home, winning their other three by the odd goal in three. Fawley suffered a reverse in form by failing to net three points having to make do with just the one point, and that coming on their travels. With these statistics we can draw the conclusion that in the SO45 postcode area, or given the results, ESSO 45 area it is the Oilers of Fawley who are the top team on the Waterside over these five years and to a certain extent this is reflected in the overall ranking of the clubs at the end, Fawley with a 9.6 average place finish, Blackfield 9.8 and Hythe & Dibden back on 14.4. But perhaps surprisingly not a clear cut picture overall with just the dozen points separating the three.

A STAG DO TO FORGET A return to the FA Vase this week and the Second Qualifying Round in 2017-18 when Whitchurch United travelled to Windsor. As an aside, during my days at Andover in the Southern League trips to what was then Windsor & Eton were always highly enjoyable -superb hospitality and always the friendliest of welcomes – but even then some of their Officials were worried about the financial health of the Club and after winning the South and West Division in 2010-11 the Club folded and a new side, known as Windsor FC was formed and continued playing at the Stag Meadow Ground when accepted in to the Combined Counties League. On to the season in question and at the start of same the Club had been moved laterally to the Hellenic Premier Division and at the time of the tie were in ninth position in the table. This meant they were a step higher than Whitchurch – fourteenth in Wessex One – and with a home draw were favourites for the tie. Windsor had defeated Western League Devizes Town in the First Qualifying Round while Whitchurch had received a bye and on a glorious afternoon weather wise the first thing of note – and it would be impossible to have missed same – was the home side’s wonderfully garish kit. Impossible to describe – an abstract swirl of red, green and yellow both front and back on a primarily red background. I think! Whilst there was a difference in Standard in line with their respective levels in the Pyramid, there was also a large difference in experience, The Wessex League side contained a large number of youngsters whilst Windsor had players with Southern League experience and in the case of Barry Hayles, Football League

experience. Hayles was now 45 years old and had played in excess of 150 games for both Fulham and Stevenage and had also represented numerous other Clubs, including three spells at Truro, and scored goals at each and every one. Seemingly living in the area, he was enjoying playing and coaching at the Club and helping the youngsters. Whitchurch got off to the worse possible start, going a goal down inside three minutes and were three down at the break, having been unfortunate with an effort from Lloyd Thompson that rebounded off the crossbar and the scoreline at that stage was perhaps harsh. The second half however was a totally different story and sadly Whitchurch had basically given up long before the end, in some ways letting down their Club and Manager. Goals came at will and the eight at the end could easily have been double figures and the comment by one visiting Official after the seventh goal that “these were the worst three match officials he had seen in thirty years” hardly summed up the afternoon. It was a bad day at the Office and Windsor built on the win by going on to reach the last eight in the Competition, beating Hamble Club on the way, before losing to Stockton Town. Two other points from the afternoon. A first class and unusually sized Programme

that, rather than being sponsored overall, had a different sponsor for eery page and the planes going in or out of Heathrow occasionally took one’s mind off the goals. I recall an Andover game at Uxbridge once where the planes overhead were infinitely more interesting than the game – but that is another story, Apologies to the present Whitchurch for recalling this but there are times when you have to take the good with the bad.

CLUB NEWS The poles and lamps from the former Chestnut Avenue home of AFC Stoneham have been put to good use, as after many years of trying, Fleetlands have finally erected floodlights at Lederle Lane. Plenty to do though before the lights can be used for matches. We have a new Manager at Cockrams. Shaftesbury have appointed former Wimborne Manager Danny Holmes.
