COUGHS AND SNEEZES SPREAD DISEASES

The FA is actively monitoring and adopting Government advice, and as a matter of good practice would recommend that Leagues and Clubs adopt the same approach. Please feel free to share this guidance. Given the current situation and guidance issued by the Public Health Authorities, the League feel it is advisable and prudent that the following be temporarily suspended until further notice: The pre-match handshakes as part of the RESPECT campaign by players and officials, Handshakes by captains and officials at the toss of the coin prior to the start of the match. Handshakes by players and officials after the final whistle. This will take effect from 3rd March until further notice. There may be more notices at short notice and the co-operation of clubs would of course be welcome during this difficult period.

DOWNTON GO NAP IN DEVON

This week’s delve in to the Programme Pile is another game in the FA Vase and dates back to November 2012, the Second Round Proper of the Competition and Downton’s visit to Buckland Athletic who were enjoying their first season in the Western League, having been promoted from the South West Peninsula League after four successful seasons at that level. Buckland are based in Newton Abbot, probably better known in sporting circles for the Racecourse, the most westerly in England, and with a population in excess of 25,000 which rather dwarfs that of Downton. The Town boasts two Football Clubs in the Pyramid with Newton Abbot Spurs currently in the South West Peninsula League and Buckland still members of the Western League and is also the home of the Devon FA. To reach this stage of the Competition Buckland scored seven and five respectively against Portishead Town and Porthleven, both at home, and then scored the only goal of the game at Saltash. Downton in turn defeated Western League opposition in Oldland Abbotonians and Bradford Town before winning by the odd goal in three against

Petersfield Town. Downton needed a last minute penalty to take the tie against a very ill-disciplined Oldland side in to extra time and a 5-3 victory before an impressive 2-1 success at Bradford. So, to November 17th and a cold afternoon in Devon. A neat ground with a large clubhouse, a well-run Club and probably the best Matchday Programme by the proverbial Country mile that I have come across at this level. Fifty pages, glossy paper and absolutely full of reading (Still is a superb souvenir of a visit- Ed). Downton included such as Charlie Aldridge, skipper Josh Thomas, Ben Smith, Declan McGregor, Paul Gulliver, Danny Finnegan and former Andover stalwarts Vince Rusher and Nic Turpin in their line up and the latter gave them the lead inside twenty minutes. Buckland quickly levelled before Turpin claimed his second and Finnegan headed the third from a Rusher cross to put the visitors in control at the interval. Finnegan added a fourth – a twenty five yard effort that flew in to the top corner – and though Buckland gave themselves hope with a second goal, Turpin completed his hat trick and a very satisfactory and deserved 5-2 victory. Then, as now, matches against Western League opposition usually tended to go in their favour so a third win against same was particularly sweet. Unfortunately, three could not become four as the Third Round draw gave Downton a 220 mile round trip to Bodmin and a 2-0 defeat. Downton however did themselves and the League proud and went on to finish eighth in the Premier Division at the end of the season. Buckland, in turn, finished twelfth in the Western Premier but did defeat current high fliers Plymouth Parkway in the FA Cup before losing to Bath City. Alongside the main pitch at Buckland was a second pitch some ten to fifteen feet higher with no real “accessories” other than a small hut. This was apparently used for as many as four matches on a Sunday for boys and girls. The Club had laid on water and electricity to this hut and paid three girls £20 each to simply make and serve tea and coffee to the parents each Sunday - and grossed two to three hundred pounds each week. A good income now and probably even better then and simple but beneficial action on the Club’s part. A very enjoyable afternoon and an equally enjoyable outcome.

MIDWEEK MATCH REPORT

Mike Robins writes PORTLAND UNITED 6-1 TOTTON & ELING BIT breezy in the far west this evening and with fog drifting in and out the crowd was obviously put off, but they missed out on a clinical performance by the hosts that saw the hosts advance into the Semi Final of the League Cup. Portland defended the Clubhouse end in the first half meaning they had the wind behind them and although the opening exchanges were influenced by the conditions, it wasn’t much of a surprise when a ball over the defence saw Eder BATISTA round Oli Eyres to score from close range, with Ed Bastick being influential in creating the first of a number of chances. It was soon two, as a low cross from Bailey Rowe wide right found Ryan McKECHNIE who hit the target from close range. The Millers were back in it on the half hour mark. The home defence were all at sea with Steve Boore chasing out wide, he slipped and cover wasn’t there and James Matthews picked out Dylan GAIN who brought the

score back to 2-1 with a sweet half volley from around eight yards out. It proved to be a false dawn though as just five minutes later BATISTA with a turn and shot low beyond Eyres made it 3-1 and restored the two goal cushion. The last throes of the half saw Portland add a fourth. Bailey ROWE cutting in from the right saw his shot hit the net. HT 4-1 Batista had a half chance ten minutes after the resumption that was well parried by Eyres and the resulting corner was easily dealt with. At the other end Morgan Callaway tested Boore, but the strike was punched away. With 67 on the clock McKECHNIE got his second. With his back to the goal his back-heel was low, on target and caught out the visiting defence and it was 5-1. With just over ten minutes left, the crowd witnessed an Eyres kick from the hands that saw Boore quite pleased to just tip away for a corner from the first bounce, such was the wind. The Millers’ Ryan Lomax and John MacAulay both had chances that were thwarted and with five left on the clock Dan Gain missed a cross that gave Batista a great chance for a hat trick but the big striker couldn’t get the ball out from under his feet and the chance was gone. Not for long though. In the dying moments up popped McKECHNIE to bag his third when Batista turned provider with a cross picking out the unmarked midfielder for a free header to round off the evening. FT 6-1

MIDWEEK ROUNDUP

Inevitably the weather interfered again on Tuesday with five of the twelve scheduled matches postponed but happily the last two quarter finals of the League Cup were played with the results very much as per the form book. Bournemouth’s season long problems away from home continued with a 4-0 defeat at Christchurch while Totton & Eling went down 6-1 at Portland United. At Hurn Bridge Luke Stone scored twice with Lucas Murrain and Nick Swann also on the scoresheet while Ryan McKechnie led the way at the New Grove with his second hat trick in the space of four days. Eder Batista with two and Bailey Rowe completed the scoring with Dylan Gain getting the consolation for the visitors in a game that was switched to Portland after being twice postponed at Millers Park. In the Premier Division contrasting fortunes for the two near neighbours in the Forest with a welcome three points for Brockenhurst and a perhaps surprise defeat for Lymington. Brockenhurst claimed their first win in seven in defeating Hamble Club 3-0 with goals from Will Tickle, Ben Kemplen and Mitchell Speechley Price as the visitors’ woes on the road continued, while Fleet Town scored four at the Sports Ground with just a consolation goal for the home side. Fleet had four different scorers on the night and would surely be higher in the table if perhaps a little more consistency could be found. The matches at Alresford and Solent were postponed adding to the fixture congestion for the University and Baffins Milton Rovers. Ironically Baffins had switched the fixture to Alresford in a bid to get it played but the weather followed them. Division One fared even worse on the evening with just one of the four matches played after the postponements at Downton, Laverstock & Ford and Hythe & Dibden. Only Potterne Park beat the weather and Verwood maintained their current unbeaten run with a 1-1 draw with Follands – a welcome point for the visitors, the Potters leveller coming in added on time. Away from the League for two Cup fixtures. In the Southampton Senior Cup Bashley’s impressive run in the Competition ended at the semi-final stage when they went down 3-0 to Blackfield & Langley at AFC Totton’s ground with Pat Suraci hitting a hat trick for the Waterside Club. At the other end of the County the Aldershot Senior Cup Tie between Ash United, from the Combined Counties League, and Alton was switched to Anstey at late notice with our representative coming out on top by 3-1 helped in no little way by two own goals. This takes Alton in to the last four where they could be joined by Fleet but Hartley Wintney must be favourites to lift the Trophy. One fixture on Wednesday in which a first half penalty from Peter Southwick, the only goal of the game, gave Fawley victory over Andover Town and three points that eased their position in the Division One table.

DIDN’T THEY HAVE A LOVELY DAY PART ONE……

The FA Vase is always an enjoyable competition and one of its attractions is the chance to visit different places even if the FA itself does not always see it that way with the over regionalisation of the draw on occasions. So, for the Premier Division, a look at random at one away tie in recent, or not so recent, years that may provoke a memory or two for those concerned. AFC PORTCHESTER 2019-20 Cullompton Rangers Won 1-0 A very recent tie and a trip to deepest Devon with opposition from the South West Peninsula League. This was the second time in three years that the two sides had met, both in Devon, and Jason Parish’s goal in the 93rd minute was revenge for the earlier loss and no doubt made for an enjoyable trip home. AFC STONEHAM 2018-19 Penn & Tylers Green Won 3-1 Again, a recent tie as Stoneham have very little Vase experience to date. Penn is a village near Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire and the Club ground share at Beaconsfield. The Hellenic League West side were no match on the day with Sergio Caballero scoring twice in a comfortable victory. ALRESFORD TOWN 2013-14 Saltash United Won 7-2 A long journey to a Club that were to finish third in the South West Peninsula League at the end of the season but found the Sydenhams side far too strong in this Third Round tie. Warren Bentley was inevitably on the scoresheet with Dominic Cope and Zach Glasspool both scoring twice. AMESBURY TOWN 2014-15 Longwell Green Lost 3-1 The outskirts of Bristol and the Western League and, as has often been the case in recent years when the two Leagues meet, we came off second best though Amesbury were in Division One that season, a step lower than their opponents. BAFFINS MILTON ROVERS 2018-19 Cray Valley PM Lost 3-1 Baffins, like Stoneham, have little Vase experience and this defeat ended a creditable run in the Competition in which they defeated five sides on their way to this fourth round clash. Jason Parish scored the goal but the Kent League side went on to reach the Final, losing 3-1 to Chertsey Town. BASHLEY 1987-88 Emley Lost 1-0 (2-1 on aggregate) Bashley were of course away from the Wessex League for a long period of time so we have to go back more than twenty years and the heartbreak of a Semi-final defeat. Emley lies between the M1 and Huddersfield in Yorkshire and were members of the Northern Counties East League at the time. BOURNEMOUTH 1988-89 First Tower United Won 1-0 A trip to Jersey for the Poppies for an Extra Preliminary Round tie against a side who have always been one of the strongest on the Island having won the Jersey Combination on no fewer than nineteen occasions, though they are not at the top level at present. One goal from David Hull was enough on the day for the visitors who repeated the trip a couple of years later to suffer a single goal defeat. BROCKENHURST 1987-88 Vale Recreation Lost 9-1 One year further back and Guernsey instead of Jersey. The sides shared four goals in the Forest leading to a replay at the iconic “Track” on the Island and, shared eight, then in a second replay, yes they did have them back then, and without detracting from the winners, one can perhaps assume that the “Badgers” had availability problem for the second trip. A Pennant relating to the game still hangs in the Vale clubhouse. CHRISTCHURCH 1998-99 Thamesmead Town Lost 1-0 Kent League opposition in the Second Qualifying Round close to the banks of the Thames between Greenwich and Bexley and no joy for the visitors on the day. Thamesmead subsequently progressed to the Ryman League but folded at the end of the 2018-19 season COWES SPORTS 1997-98 North Ferriby United Lost 3-1 Cowes have always been doughty contestants in the Vase and reached the Fourth Round Proper in the year in question. Their opponents from Hull travelled south for a one all draw and then won through in the replay with both sides having made a five hundred mile round trip to fulfil the fixture. The Yorkshire Club folded a couple of years ago when in the Northern Premier League and North Ferriby Town have since risen from the ashes at a lower level.

WEEKEND MATCH REPORTS

Roger Allen writes CHRISTCHURCH 5-1 SHAFTESBURY Ultimately a clear win for this impressive Christchurch side but it took them over an hour to subdue a dogged Shaftesbury team. Christchurch had a couple of early chances when both Ash Pope and Matt Neale misdirected headers wide but on 11 minutes they took the lead from a Ron Frost long throw from the left. NEALE was left with a simple task to score as he met the ball in the middle of the goal area. Shortly after Shaftesbury had their first chance from a Luke Winsper free kick but Aaron Leney completely missed his header in front of goal. The game then went into a bit of a lull until near the half hour, when Max Wilcock brought out a good save from Shaftesbury keeper, Dan Card.

Winsper for Shaftesbury and Ben Satterley for Christchurch both blazed shots over the bar and in the final action of the half Neale had a powerful shot parried away by Card. HT 1-0

[Pictured left we see Christchurch’s Management team- collecting the Premier Division Club of the Month award from the League Ground Grading Officer. L to R- Wayne Smith, Ian Harley, Ollie Cherrett] Early in the second period Satterley had a shot deflected wide and then on 57 minutes Christchurch doubled their lead. A left wing corner was returned to Pope whose high cross was headed back across goal by Harvey Wright for WILCOCK to score with a close range header. Just after the hour Shaftesbury got a toe hold in the game when Nick HEWLETT headed in a Winsper free kick. However on 69 minutes Christchurch restored their two goal advantage. Again it came from a set piece as Neale clipped in a free kick to the danger area for WRIGHT to head home.

Christchurch now had complete control of the game looking both fitter and sharper than their opponents. On 74 minutes they scored the best goal of the game when a slick move involving Pope, Neale and Nick Swann ended with SATTERLEY heading home from close range. Finally in the 89th minute SATTERLEY picked up the ball in the middle of the Shaftesbury half and placed a well-directed shot into the bottom corner from just over 20 yards. FT 5-1 John Gorman writes ANDOVER NEW STREET 0-0 ALTON A game between two of the promotion aspirants in Division One that ended with honours even, a game that was enjoyable– moreso in the current climate – but overall a game that largely lacked excitement in front of goal. Chances were in short supply, both pairs of central defenders missed very little and neither goalkeeper was greatly tested. The home side were the first to go forward as Alex Dockree steered a long clearance in to Shane Locks path but keeper Steve Douglas was quickly out to clear the danger. The game was slow to get going before Alton enjoyed a spell of pressure with Jack Fowler’s control letting him down following a cross from Luke Perkins and a dangerous looking cross from Liam Knight well cut out by Matt Scott, with the resulting corner cleared with some difficulty. At the other end Luke Hooper fastened on to a through ball from Lock but was forced wide and could only find the side netting. The pace of both Fowler and Knight on the flanks was troubling the home defence and Perkins should perhaps have done better when Fowler pulled the ball back in to his path, but the shot was high. Fowler was too straight with another effort before Street fashioned their first real opening. Lock found Jay Silver on the right and Rafa Ramos met the cross with a downward header that was very well clawed to safety by Douglas. The keeper then held another cross at the second attempt before his counterpart at the other end, Chris Wing, came to the edge of the area to punch a ball clear. There were muted appeals that he was outside the area and his hand may well have been, but his feet were not. The sort of situation with which VAR would have had a field day. Jake Curtis, an increasing presence in the middle of the Street defence, sent Ramos clear but the striker pulled his shot across the face of the goal and George Bowerman just failed to make contact with an Alton free kick and sustained an injury for his pains The same player was then denied by a superb tackle by Curtis before the last action of the half saw Perkins make space for himself but his shot was very high and very wide. HT 0-0

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 37

It was the home side’s turn to start the better in the second half with a Silver shot blocked and a corner punched clear by Douglas under pressure. New Street then replaced both strikers, Hooper and Ramos, with Reece Rusher and Ben Dillon, Wing left his area to halt another attack and then held a long swirling cross, despite the close attention of two visiting forwards. More substitutes arrived before some confusion between the Officials nearly created a chance for Alton, The referee, rightly in most eyes, gave a free kick to New Street on the halfway line only for the Assistant to decree it was the other way and with most of the home players out of position, they were rescued by an offside flag. A poor New Street back pass left Matt Connor clear but he dallied on the ball allowing the defence to recover and there were no takers at the other end when Lock turned a Scott free kick back across goal. A scoreless draw was looking more and more on the cards with the New Street changes leaving them ostensibly without a target man, and the last Alton attack ended with Phil Moore shooting rather hurriedly wide when he appeared to have far more time. So, a goalless draw it was – not by any means a common occurrence at Foxcotte (It is only the second I have seen there in a competitive fixture in 121 visits and the previous one was in 2010). On the day it was a fair result and made little difference for either side as regards the League table. Mention of referee Ffion Eade, normally an Assistant at this level. She had a good game, two justifiable cautions. The players gave her every chance and both halves started bang on time. FT 0-0 Mike Robins writes NEW MILTON TOWN 1-2 WHITCHURCH UNITED BIGGEST gate of the season to date at the BBX Stadium today, but not the result the hosts really wanted. The Jam Boys started briskly and inside the first five minutes had two chances to open their account, Rory Wood had a shot on the turn that was just wide of the mark and shortly after a back heel that was easily dealt with by Luke Dennison in the home goal. Mikey Davis then found himself through on goal and rounded the home keeper but simply couldn’t finish. No doubt he was disappointed not to have finished from there. It wasn’t all one way though as veteran Ashley Booker and Jack Cooper combined well, but the former’s shot was superbly stopped by Ash Downs in the Whitchurch goal, spreading himself to stop the finish. DAVIS was a thorn in the side of New Milton most of the game and had two more chances, a rising shot after shrugging off the attention of a defender was punched away, and a curling shot from close to the Clubhouse touchline wasn’t far from hitting the target. It was perhaps not surprising when it was him that broke the deadlock on 40 minutes- with a shot over the onrushing Dennison’s outstretched arms. The final action of the half saw some good work on the flank from Wood that could have meant the gap at the interval was two, but the delivery was dealt with and the half ended. HT 0-1 The second period started I much the same fashion as the first ended, with a Whitchurch chance blocked by Booker after a weak clearance. However the hosts levelled the affair on 55 minutes through Asa DRODGE. A short pass from Ben Cooper found the youngster unmarked around ten yards out and his low shot found the corner of the net. This was their first home goal since January 4th, a long wait indeed. This lifted New Milton but they couldn’t convert possession into goals and after a flurry of substitutions, the Jam Boys regained the lead with a sloppy goal conceded by the hosts but finished well by Declan SHUTTLEWORTH from close range. The crowd were then treated to a spectacular attempted Scorpion kick from Lloyd Thompson that was well saved by an equally acrobatic save from Dennison. Whether it was deliberate effort from Thompson or not remains to be seen, but it certainly warmed up a cold afternoon for a few moments. Dennison also had to resort to some unorthodox defensive play as the game entered the final stages, and although both sides threatened to find a goal the final ball failed to produce any further goal action. FT 1-2

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

With the current medical situation across the nation, the Southern League decided to postpone their programme of fixtures yesterday, but the National League went ahead. Former members Eastleigh probably wish it had been a non-starter, as they went down to a 4-0 defeat at Notts County that sees the Magpies go third. Who’d have thought it that one of our ex clubs would play there in a League fixture.

Just space to reflect on the weekend in the top spots in Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire. The Dorset Premier saw Merley take advantage of Hamworthy Recreation having no league fixture to regain top spot albeit now three games ahead, by running in a 6-2 win against Bridport Reserves. Westland also took closer order with a 2-1 win over Weymouth side Balti Sports. Hampshire saw only Paulsgrove in the top three have a game and they hit eight without reply against visitors Lyndhurst. Just two games survived in Wiltshire and only one had ramifications at the top, with Corsham defeating Purton 2-0. No league games in the Wyvern Premier, where Wimborne sit top on 41 points from 19 games with Poole three points adrift but having played two games more.

WEEK THIRTY-THREE ROUND UP

his weekend’s round up commenced on Thursday as Clubs begin to catch up with outstanding fixtures.

The Premier Division meeting between Horndean and Christchurch was postponed because of the pitch

conditions but in the two games that were played the figure five held sway. At Cams Alders Fareham

and Baffins Milton Rovers shared ten goals and the points whilst Sholing scored five without reply against

Bemerton Heath in the quarter final of the Russell-Cotes Cup. Josh Benfield scored twice for Fareham with

Callum Dart matching that for the visitors while Stuart Green was another two goal man for Sholing, who join

Alton, Christchurch and Lymington in the last four of the Competition. The attendance at Fareham was perhaps

lower than expected but attendances generally have been down this week for understandable reasons.

Two games on Friday but only one played with Fawley following up on Wednesday’s win with a further point

in a one all draw at Petersfield – Matt Low and Will Berry the scorers. The other game between Totton &

Eling and United Services was postponed and should the season be played to a finish the Millers have fourteen

games still to play, nine of which are at home.

Saturday saw the games at Horndean, Laverstock and Romsey postponed through waterlogged pitches whilst

those at AFC Portchester and Tadley were lost for health reasons in the current climate.

In the Premier Division Alresford pressed relentlessly on with a 4-1 victory over Lymington, the latter’s second

successive defeat by that scoreline. All the goals came from proven scorers with Craig McAllister (2), Craig

Harding and Mike Gosney on target for the leaders and Sam House claiming the visitors’ goal.

AFC Stoneham were held to a two all draw at home by Solent University FC, proof again of the latter’s away

form, with Alex Welch and Mat Bainbridge on the mark for the home side and goals from John Wallace and

Ryan Penny in reply.

Christchurch were the day’s highest scorers, beating Shaftesbury 5-1 with Ben Satterley leading the way with

a double and there was a welcome win for Hamble Club after a run of defeats, 2-1 over bottom Club Amesbury

with Nathan Lynch scoring one of the goals.

The New Forest derby between Bashley and Brockenhurst attracted an attendance in excess of three hundred

(in fact at 339, the best gate this season in our League- Ed) who saw Freddie Bullard open the scoring in the

first minute for the Badgers before strikes from Conor Whiteley, Harry Morgan and Lewis Ross saw the home

side take the three points and the bragging rights.

The final game in the Division saw a feast of goals at Westwood Park with doubles all round in a four all draw

between Cowes Sports and Fleet Town. John McKie, back in a Cowes shirt, and Mike McEnery both scored

twice for the Islanders with Dan Bone and Aaron Redford replying in similar fashion for Fleet, the second

away game in a row in which they have scored four.

Five games on the day in Division One and only eight goals. There was the rarity of a goalless draw at Foxcotte

Park where Andover New Street and Alton cancelled each other out and there was a similar outcome at Hamble

where Follands held high scorers Bemerton Heath, a very good result for the Planemakers.

Things were marginally better at Whippingham where a lone Jez Conway goal gave East Cowes Vics a

welcome win over Ringwood and moved them out of the bottom two. Three goals at New Milton with Asa

Drodge netting for the home side but goals from Mikey Davis and Declan Shuttleworth gave visitors

Whitchurch the points.

The Portway saw the most goals with Andover Town and Downton sharing four between them. The Pattison

brothers were on the score sheet for the second Saturday in succession for Andover with Diego Romero and

Dalitso Mandson scoring for the Wiltshire Club. Mandson incidentally was on Andover’s books earlier in the

season.

No real change in either Division with a number of the top sides not in action and it is still Alresford and US

Portsmouth who lead the way

Thanks to all the clubs who played yesterday and sympathy with Tadley and Portland over their problems. The

attendances overall were higher than usual with eight over three figures led by Bashley – who are perhaps at

the head of the queue when it comes to publicising and promoting their fixtures – with 339.

The two Andover Clubs, a mile apart, both had three figures (there were two people from Wolverhampton at

New Street) and on a strictly personal note and without in any way minimising the situation you are surely

more at risk in a crowded Supermarket than watching Wessex League football. Can we continue please.
