WHEN ALRESFORD STRUCK GOLD AT THE GOLDSANDS

The Programme collection this week has thrown up a Cup Final and a game that will always take a pride of place in the Annals of Alresford Town Football Club and hold a significant place in the history of the Wessex League. The Hampshire Senior Cup is a Trophy that is normally out of the reach of the Sydenhams League because of the number of Clubs in the County that play at a higher level and the occasional involvement of the three Football League Clubs affiliated to the County FA.

After a bye in Round One Alresford crossed the Solent to defeat East Cowes Vics 4-2 and then overcame a young but skilful Aldershot side at Arlebury Park by the odd goal in three before a single goal victory at Hamble Club saw them in to the last four. AFC Bournemouth also enjoyed a first round bye before scoring six against both Winchester City and Fleet Town to earn a quarter final tie with Eastleigh. This finished two all after ninety minutes with the League side winning the penalty shootout by four three to join Alresford and Southern League sides Sholing and AFC Totton in the last four. The draw paired Alresford with Sholing and an extra time winner saw the Sydenhams side in to the Final. Bournemouth again needed penalties to proceed after sharing two goals with Totton in normal time with the shootout ending four two in the Cherries’ favour. So Alresford were in the Final of the Hampshire Senior cup with the daunting task of not only facing a Football League side who had won promotion to the Championship that season, but also facing them at their own Goldsands Stadium.

In fairness Bournemouth had fielded their Youth or Under-21 side throughout the Competition and continued to do so in the Final but the fact that the Programme Line up on the evening included Charlie Daniels, Simon Francis, Tommy Elphick, Steve Cook, Harry Arter and Ryan Fraser who have since amassed nearly fifteen hundred first team appearances between them with the majority in the Premiership, showed the quality of the side they were facing, Fraser was the only one of those named who did actually play on the night and has since won International honours for Scotland and has been linked with a big money move to Arsenal in recent months. An even first half looked like finishing goalless until two minutes before the interval when a clever through ball from Zach Glasspool sent Warren BENTLEY clear to put the underdogs ahead only for an immediate equaliser from Jayden STOCKLEY to leave the scores level at the break. Three minutes in to the second half Glasspool steered the ball in to Simon EVERETT’s path and the midfielder’s low drive restored Alresford’s lead. GLASSPOOL made it 3-1 with just under half an hour left and a battling performance from the Sydenhams side led by a superb display from goalkeeper Steve Phillips, maintained the two goal advantage until eight minutes from time when Bournemouth scored a second goal through Aristide BASSELLE which should have set up a grandstand finish. But the mantra drummed into players at that level at Professional Clubs is “keep the ball” so rather than throwing everything at the Alresford goal, the home side were still happy to play the ball back and forth across the back four and this when a goal down in a Cup Final with minutes left to play. But that in no way detracts from a brilliant performance on the night by Alresford that capped a superb season for the North Hampshire club. Runners Up in the League, League Cup and North Hants Cup winners and only the third Wessex League side to lift the Hampshire Senior Cup, following in the footsteps of Andover and Winchester City. Glasspool and Bentley scored in excess of sixty goals between them in all Competitions but credit is due to all involved, management, players and those behind the scenes, and an especially wonderful, and fully deserved, evening for long time Club stalwarts Trevor Ingram and Keith Curtis – all in all very much a golden night at The Goldsands.

. 440 MILES HELSTON ATHLETIC v TEAM SOLENT [1-2] First Round Proper 2016/17 – Really not sure how we missed this one from last week from the Vase mileages story- so apologies to our friends from Southampton. Straight in at number four and a bizarre journey in terms of the stage of the competition. This was the Cornish sides first season in the Vase, reaching this round courtesy of a 3-1 win at Portishead Town in the previous round. A Tyrell Mitford double saw the Students go through in this late October tie. Solent reached the 5th Round that season before going down to eventual winners South Shields 5-2 at Test Park.

One from Gary’s archives. “Games between Laverstock & Ford and QK Southampton were seldom short of

a few goals and here’s one such meeting where Lavvy notched up a heavy win. I know there are some QK

followers who read this Newsletter and, never fear, you will have your chance for revenge when the letter

‘Q’ comes around!”

Compiled by Gary Day and Mike Robins, it’s hoped you enjoy this series which will run whilst we await the resumption of our game and will conclude in pre-season if necessary. The ‘Tier’ system explained. The names of the divisions have changed over the years. Tier 1 is the present day Premier Division. Tier 2 is the current Division One. Tier 3 lasted for just three seasons and was initially called Division 3 but had been renamed Division 2 in its final campaign.

Lavvy got off to a roaring start with two goals in the opening eight minutes. Toby Giles was left space and took full advantage to crash the ball home off the underside of the bar and that was swiftly followed by Lee Burden being left an open chance after the keeper had fumbled a cross. Jason Cooper had a glaring chance to add a third but hammered it off the bar. QK immediately pulled a goal back when Anthony Summers’ cross from the right drifted over the home keeper and high into goal. But it soon became 3-1 to Lavvy when Lee Burden’s pass found Nick Newman and his low cross picked out Cooper who just got there before the keeper. Two minutes before the break QK’s Ian Bush headed home a Shane Bedwell cross to bring the score back to 3-2. There was enough time for a fourth Lavvy goal before the half-time whistle when Neale Burden hit a speculative 35-yard shot that deceived the QK keeper and went in. So, 4-2 at the interval. Lavvy scored twice in the opening thirteen minutes of the second half as the luckless QK keeper dropped a cross and Tom Ingram was left a simple touch and Ingram did it again, exploiting a near post gap after the visiting keeper got his angles wrong. So, 6-2 now and Shaun Hartley made it seven, slotting home at the back post from Neale Burden’s low cross. The scoring was completed three minutes from time when Newman netted, having slipped the ball past the keeper he finished with an acute angled shot.

Notes: Intense rain had fallen for a good while, including on the Saturday morning and (in days of communications not being quite as good as they are now) I took a chance and journeyed to East Hampshire. I arrived at the Liss ground at 1.35 for a 2pm kick-off to find the game was still in doubt but the match referee Mr R Gatzianidis soon declared it was ‘game on’ even though the corners of the pitch were saturated. The decision was clearly justified as players could control the ball with ease and Horndean, amongst the leading pack in the table, started brightly. It was Liss who netted first though when Andy Neal got down the left and crossed where Clinton Ford fired home. Deans almost levelled when Dean Allen’s free kick curled off the bar via a vital touch by Liss keeper Andy Glasspool. Football can be a cruel game as Liss soon went 2-0 ahead when a forceful run by Jon Noble took him into the box and he moved across a defender and planted a firm shot into the corner of the net. Matt Short for the visitors moved into the Liss box and was tripped by Tim Potter and Paul Ryan pulled a goal back from the penalty spot. Horndean soon levelled in the second half, around ninety seconds after the restart, as Paul ‘Bunny’ Austin crossed for Jay Shepherd to head home. A Short header came off the Liss bar and Jon Noble got forward for Liss and seemed to be held back, but play went on and his shot went just wide. Liss did regain the lead through substitute Spencer Cunningham who shot home on 73 minutes. Next a skirmish between Mark Summerhill of Liss and Alan Pinhorne of Horndean resulted in both sides completing the final nine minutes a player short. Mick Barrow almost increased the Liss lead but was denied by a good save by Steve Davis in the visitors goal. Cunningham then put in fellow sub Glen Mason who beat a defender and ‘passed’ the ball into goal and complete a 4-2 win for Liss. It was an entertaining encounter on the wet but playable surface and certainly warranted the journey from Southampton on a day when few matches survived the rain. Footnote: Both clubs finished in mid-table and had the facilities to join the newly formed Premier Division of the Hampshire League in the summer. In 2019/20: Liss Athletic were playing in the Hampshire Premier League – Senior Division.

Sub (not used): Smith. Notes: Locksheath were close to finishing their pitch relocation at Titchfield Common so they had to source this alternative venue for an early season midweek match, and it proved to be a goal bonanza at Hook Lane. Locks were in front on three minutes when John Wassell crossed and Kavin Hiscock (an ex-Bishops player) was left unmarked in the middle to head home. It was 2-0 in the 10th minute, Neil Kerton and Andy Swaffield were both involved in the build-up for Andy Knight to be left an easy task and his first of a four-goal haul on the evening. Locks continued to dominate and added a third goal on 27 minutes when Kevin Parris got his head to a cross and Kevin Warren headed home. A defensive calamity occurred next when a Parris cross was inexplicably knocked back to his own goal by a Bishops player and a teammate got his foot to it and diverted it to Knight who shot into goal. When Paul Coffin handled in the box up stepped Graham (Gunner) Enfield to score from the penalty for Bishops but the first half scoring hadn’t quite finished. Hiscock chased a long ball and a poor touch by the Bishops keeper enabled the Locks striker to score his second of the evening and make it 5-1 at the break. The scoring soon recommenced in the second half as Parris provided another assist to Warren to shoot home and, with barely five minutes of the half having elapsed, a swift move and the ball was played to Swaffield to finish emphatically and the score was now 7-1. Knight completed his hat-trick on 67 minutes, knocking it home after the keeper had parried Hiscock’s shot. When Bishops keeper Mead punched a shot out it fell to Knight to shoot in high and make it 9-1 with ten minutes still to go. Gunner Enfield hit the bar for Bishops but he completed his second goal of the game with a slick chip on 87 minutes and the ‘goal glut’ at Hook Lane was completed.

Footnote: From a check on the internet it looks very much as though this facility is still in place. In 2019/20: Locksheath were playing in the Hampshire Premier League – Senior Division.

This game started only ten minutes late than the intended 6pm, but this proved to be enough for the referee to make it a forty minute each-way game even though it was a bright enough evening. Frustrating that! This was a cracking game of football in which AFC Aldermaston played their part. It didn’t have a hint of a bad tackle in it and it was a case of Ludgershall taking their chances. Sports were the better side in the first half, but it was Aldermaston who had two opportunities to score the game’s first goal. Alas, they didn’t take them and Chris Phillips did for Sports when a throw was headed on and he netted with a first time shot. Sports nosed ahead in the 46th minute (oh, that’s six minutes into the second half, of course) when Mick Walsh was through on the left, his shot was parried by the Aldermaston keeper and Phillips shot home at the far post. There was a three-goal flurry which saw Matthew Partridge net for Aldermaston and a brace for Sports’ Ian Winstone. First, he was left a simple opportunity from a pulled back cross and when the AFC defence was again opened up, he applied a near post finish. There was just time for Phillips to complete his hat-trick when he collected a deflection off a defender and finished firm and low. Yes, the light was starting to go near the end, but it was one of those occasions when I reflect about what could have happened in that ‘missing’ ten minutes! Sub (not used): New. Notes: The summer of 1998 was a strange one for football down Lymington way! The successful AFC Lymington club decided to merge with New Milton Town and play on the latter’s ground. This potentially left no football being played at the Lymington Sports Ground. However, the Lymington Town team was resurrected and even survived a move to block their formation, a situation that was only resolved on the very eve of the season. The new club had to start at the lowest rung of the Hampshire League (Division 3) and had made a good start. Visitors Farnborough North End had put a poor start behind them having struck some good recent form. Lymington had the better of the first half, but it was 1-1 at the break. Town took the lead on 19 minutes when the ball came in from the right and with the visiting defence drawn to the near post, David Perrett was lurking at the back stick to shoot home. Daniel Peach then forced North End keeper Dan Nevill to a good save but out of the blue came an equaliser when Gary Pesquero played the ball into the box from a good 30 yards out and it deceived the forwards, defenders and keeper and went straight into the far corner. Lymington soon got their noses in front early in the second half. They were awarded a rather dodgy free kick in a dangerous position and whilst the visitors were sorting out their defensive ranks Perrett quickly got on with it and fired low into the far corner. There was a little debate from the visitors but the goal stood. Perrett almost completed his hat-trick but Nevill made another fine save. There was an unusual delay to the game late on when there was no ball available, others were kicked on, but it seemed they didn’t have enough air in them, but it eventually got sorted out! The match was put beyond doubt when the keeper spilled a Perrett shot and this allowed Lee Gallagher to apply a simple close-range finish. Although they had to start at the bottom of the county league ladder, Lymington had clearly got their ‘Town’ team back again!

Notes: The Micheldever ground provided a lovely setting on a beautiful afternoon. The home side had the likes of Orchard, Nye, Barnaby and Elloway in their ranks, all having turned out for Winchester City in the past (there were probably others too). Visitors Hadleigh were from Basingstoke and apparently took their name from Hadleigh Place, a cul-de-sac road close to the public house they used. An early goal got this one going and it went to Hadleigh when Jay Butt was quicker to the ball than a home defender and slotted home. Many chances were created but the keepers – Kevin Marchant for Micheldever and Nick Stones for the visitors – were playing well. When Rob Perritt tripped Craig Barnaby just inside the box Mark Green netted with a good low spot-kick right at the end of the half to level the scores. Micheldever went in front early in the second half when a cross somehow got through to the far post and John Mills netted with a low shot. The game ebbed and flowed for a while without goals and suddenly five came in the final ten minutes! Mark Elloway made it 3-1 with a powerful run through and finished well into the far corner on 80 minutes. Elloway made it a swift brace two minutes later at the far post from Giles Farrington’s free kick. Only two minutes remained when Butt scored his second goal for Hadleigh, beating the offside trap and smartly rounding Marchant to make it 4-2. Eagle-eyed referee Mr Einchcomb spotted a push and this enabled Green to net his second penalty of the game and make it 5-2. But the final goal of the day came Hadleigh’s way when, in stoppage time (mainly due to a delay for the ref to deal with a ‘mini fracas’), Lee Greenwood was put clear to fire past the keeper.

BISHOPSTOKE SOCIAL 0 MONEYFIELDS (4) 8 Moneyfields: Robinson; Stafford, Muckells; Chapman, John, Wall; Blades, Lafferty (sub: Jennings 72), Marsh, Darnley, Shakespeare (sub: Wain 87). Sub (not used): Fair Notes: Moneys visited Bishopstoke in good form having scored six goals in their last two away games (1-6 at AC Delco and 0-6 at Blackfield & Langley), whilst Bishopstoke had been struggling a bit. One or two of the Moneys players had concerns as the overnight frost hadn’t cleared from some areas of the pitch. A surprise result could be on the cards? No chance! An early goal for Moneys when Matt Lafferty crossed from the left and it was half-cleared but only to Neil Darnley to fire home from eight yards. Four good Moneys chances were missed but they eventually scored again when, on 25 minutes, Nathan Wall charged into the box and went over under a heavy challenge, the loose ball ran to Darnley to place his shot home. It was soon three when home keeper Mark Robinson did well to block a Jason Shakespeare shot but it popped up to Kevin Marsh to head in. With Robinson left completely exposed Darnley duly completed his hat-trick on 28 minutes and this was looking to be a tough afternoon for the home side. The second half went through a slack phase but Moneyfields stepped it up. Steve Blades was in on goal and cheekily nutmegged the keeper, a defender kept it out of the net with a lunging block but his effort was in vain as Shakespeare was left a simple touch over the line. A sixth Moneys goal came when Rob John played a pass which put Marsh through the inside-right channel and his shot was goal-bound but picked up a couple of defensive deflections before finding the far corner. From a corner, Wall jinked past a defender and made it seven and the scoring was completed with Marsh getting his third goal of the game, shooting home firm and low and cap a comprehensive win for his side. Footnote: Moneys (with 32 wins in their 40 matches, 140 goals scored and 99 points) were the Hampshire League Division 1 champions. This was the first of four visits to this ground in the 1996/97 season and Bishopstoke scored eight goals in one of those games themselves! They finished 15th (of 21) in the division.

WESSEX VERSUS WESTERN It is probably fair to say, because of the way that the Draw is structured, that in the FA Vase Clubs in the Wessex League are far more likely to meet Clubs from the Western League than from any of the other surrounding Leagues. There is also a perception that over the years the Western League has fared better in the exchanges. To try to prove the point listed below are the present Sydenhams Wessex League Clubs and their results against their Western Counterparts over the last ten seasons. PL W L PL W L Downton 12 8 4 US Portsmouth 4 1 3 Newport IoW 11 4 7 Alresford Town 3 1 2 Cowes Sports 8 5 3 Amesbury Town 3 0 3 Team Solent 7 2 5 Andover New Street 3 0 3 Bournemouth 6 3 3 Andover Town 3 1 2 Bemerton Heath H’quins 6 4 2 Baffins Milton Rovers 3 2 1 East Cowes Victoria 6 1 5 Fareham Town 3 2 1 Horndean 6 5 1 Fawley AFC 3 2 1 Laverstock & Ford 6 2 4 Ringwood Town 3 1 2 Petersfield Town 6 4 2 Totton & Eling 3 1 2 Romsey Town 6 2 4 Alton 2 0 2 Brockenhurst 5 1 4 Bashley 2 1 1 Hamworthy United 5 3 2 Hythe & Dibden 2 1 1 Lymington Town 5 2 3 Portland Town 2 1 1 Verwood Town 5 4 1 AFC Stoneham 1 1 0 Whitchurch United 5 1 4 Hamble Club 1 0 1 AFC Portchester 4 3 1 Shaftesbury 1 0 1 Christchurch 4 3 1 Tadley Calleva 1 0 1 Folland Sports 4 3 1 Fleet Town 0 0 0 New Milton Town 4 0 4 TOTAL 164 75 89

Please note that the above does not include any drawn matches and that the figures for Follands include all their various guises over the years. The overall results perhaps do prove the perception and in percentage terms it is 45% against 55%. Some three or four years ago we queried with the FA as to why so many Wessex Clubs were drawn against each other, even in the later rounds, and received a very long winded and complicated reply which appeared to suggest that the original entrants are placed in to a number of sections – tranches was the word they used – and possibly Downton’s geographical position on the western edge of our area has something to do with the number of times they have met Western League opposition. Newport have a good success rate in the Vase overall, which perhaps helps to explain their high number and possibly the same can be applied to Cowes though overall the FA’S often strange version of geography perhaps plays a part. But credit to Downton for their results overall and mention too of Horndean and Verwood for the same reason. Over the ten years under review nearly fifty Western League Clubs have faced Wessex League opposition with the “top” five being as follows:- PL W L PL W L Bradford Town 12 9 3 Melksham Town 8 5 3 Westbury United 8 6 2 Warminster Town 8 6 2 Cadbury Heath 8 5 3

Bradford, it can be said, have very much had the upper hand but given that Warminster have always been in Division One rather than the Premier Division, their results, with respect, are a little surprising. And mention of one other Club, Bridport, who scored eleven in one Vase tie against Wessex League side ……………but we will spare their blushes! Hopefully, we can redress the balance in the coming season.

WEEK THIRTY-NINE ROUND UP

We hear that Mark Smith, Downton Chairman has stood down from the position, former player Dan Newman will assume the roles going forwards. Further north along the A338 Bemerton Heath Harlequins have announced the appointment of Jamie Cotton as Assistant Manager. Andover New Street and Andover New Street Swifts (Hampshire Premier League) have recently been taking the opportunity to use the lockdown period regarding Covid-19 to raise funds for two well deserving charities. Through their donation pages, Gofundme.com and Justgiving.com as at time of writing Andover New Street have raised over £3,200 for NHS Charities Together by collectively running 550 miles - 5 miles per day per player for ten days.

Andover New Street Swifts have similarly exceeded their target raising over £1,300 for the Andover Food Bank. Chairman Martin Tobin led the Club Committee support at the Community Chartered Standard club in saying how proud they are of the players’ achievement which highlights the Club's continual aim to support local charities, and to be able to help support the NHS in these unprecedented times as well as supporting the local community regularly on an ongoing basis. Please visit their donation pages for further information about the challenges and if you would like to make a donation this would be greatly appreciated - https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/jamie-coleman4 or - https://www.gofundme.com/f/andover-food-bank?utm_source=customer&utm_medium=copy_link-tip&utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet Players from Solent University FC -plus other sports at the University, have signed up to take part in the charity challenge after their end-of-season club tour to Rimini, Italy, was cancelled due to the Covid-19 virus. The plan is to raise money for the NHS by running the distance to Rimini by deciding to use their commute to work or their daily exercise time to run solo, close to their homes and in line with government guidance. The target of some 2,200 miles before the end of April began on Thursday 9th April so is well under way as I write this. This equates roughly to just over 5km. a day for each person involved, or some 21,640 lengths of a football pitch. Progress has been documented on Instagram (@run_2_rimini). To donate, please visit

uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Team/RuntoRimini. On behalf of the League, I extend our congratulations to the clubs and those individuals involved, in executing these superb initiatives at this difficult time. It goes without saying that our sincere condolences go out to any of our readers who have lost family members or friends to this disease, which leads us finally, to the last words this week…

MIKE APPLEBY It is with much sadness that we hear that Mike Appleby passed away earlier this week having been very poorly for the last few weeks with Covid-19. He worked for the FA for over 30 years holding many different roles and was a UEFA Match Delegate. Mike will be remembered for the outstanding work he undertook with the National League System, its Leagues and Clubs along with establishing the England C team whereby players in the National League System have the chance to be recognised internationally. Since his “retirement” from the Football Association Mike was Secretary of the Spartan South Midlands League, where he had become more and more important to, and influential in, the day to day running of the League. On behalf of the League I extend our deepest condolences to family and friends. The league had also recently lost their Referee Secretary Isaac Jempeji through the same disease earlier in the month, so a very difficult time for all involved.
