Wessex League Cup Final 1996/97 Thatcham Town 4 (Beal, Gomersall, Turner, Whorriskey) Ryde Sports 0 at Eastleigh

Alan Shearer topped the Premiership goal scoring chart for the third season, contributing 25 goals for the Geordies. Manchester United retained the Premiership title and Chelsea beat Middlesbrough 2-0 in the FA Cup Final, in the FA Vase Whitby Town claimed the honours with a 3-0 win over North Ferriby United. Off the pitch Princess Diana died in a car crash in Paris and Tony Blair led Labour to a landslide victory in the General Election. Abroad, Hong Kong was returned to China in the summer of 1997 and more locally Woolworths stores began to disappear from the High Street. Actor James Stewart died in July and on the small screen the first Midsomer Murders series was aired. On the big screen, Star Trek: First Contact was on the screens in December 1996 and “Candle In the Wind” sung by Elton John was song of the year, of course this has become inextricably linked with the death of Princess Diana. This was the eleventh season of the Wessex League and was marked by an achievement that had not occurred in the previous ten seasons and, in all probability, will not be equalled. The League had just one Division of 21 Clubs, the same as the previous season, but with one change in the makeup. Swanage and Herston had been relegated at the end of the previous season after finishing bottom of the table with twenty-two points and a goal difference of -105. They were replaced by Romsey, back in the League following a three year gap, after finishing third in the Hampshire League behind Colden Common and Netley Central Sports, neither of whom had the facilities to gain promotion. Thatcham had pipped AFC Lymington for the Title in 1995/96 but had not, presumably, applied for promotion to the Southern League. Looking at the table above just three Clubs – AFC Lymington, Andover and Ryde Sports – are no more whilst Aerostructures, BAT and Portsmouth Royal Navy are still with the League though with a change of name. Ryde’s demise came at a “strange” time as they were on the crest of a wave having finished third and fourth in consecutive seasons but this was to be their last season as the finance and facilities turned to Speedway. Other Clubs – Wimborne, Thatcham, Eastleigh, Gosport and AFC Totton have, to their credit, moved up the Football Pyramid and it is to the League’s credit that they have been seamlessly replaced on their leaving. Goals were not in as great supply as previous seasons - only one Club topped the three figure mark – and the goals against column made kinder reading than in some seasons. Cowes Sports rose from 16th the previous season to 9th place whilst Christchurch went the other way, dropping from 5th to 16th. Downton’s 8th place was their highest to date and they did not better same until 2011/12 when they finished in 6th place. At the end of the season Petersfield were relegated with AFC Newbury joining in their place. But pride of place goes very much to AFC Lymington who went through the season unbeaten in the League, the first time such a feat has been achieved, and, as mentioned earlier, it’s a feat that has not to date been equalled and it is perhaps fair to say that it is unlikely to be matched. Thatcham Town and Portsmouth Royal Navy had four points and one point respectively deducted, presumably for misdemeanours during the course of the season, and it is interesting that Whitchurch and Christchurch finished with the same points and goal difference. Presumably Whitchurch’s higher total of goals scored gave them precedence in the table. Thatcham Town won the League Cup for the fourth time with a 4-0 victory over Ryde Sports at Eastleigh and also enjoyed relative success in both the FA Cup and FA Vase. More of our teams were beginning to enter the two FA Competitions, but by no means the full complement, and in the very early stages of the FA Cup there were impressive wins for AFC Lymington and Wimborne – 6-1 and 5-0 over Windsor and Cove respectively – but it was Thatcham who carried the League flag the furthest. Wins over Brockenhurst and Bemerton (even in those days the FA loved to pair Clubs from the same League together) followed by victories at Southern League Premier Gloucester and Bashley – one division lower –

before going out to Isthmian Premier League Boreham Wood in the Fourth Qualifying Round, one game away from mixing with the lower reaches of the Football League. In the Vase Gosport, Bemerton Heath, BAT, Downton, Christchurch, Brockenhurst, AFC Lymington and Wimborne all reached or were exempt until the First Round Proper at which stage Wimborne achieved a 2-0 victory at Lymington. But it was Thatcham and Bemerton Heath who proceeded the furthest. The Salisbury based side won at Porthleven (a fair journey), Odd Down (Bath) and Burgess Hill while Thatcham, exempt util the Second Round Proper, won at Wick and then defeated Wimborne 4-1 to join Bemerton in the Fourth Round Proper where both their journeys ended. Thatcham lost 1-0 at home to Western League Tiverton and Bemerton suffered the same result against Collier Row & Romford from the Isthmian League. AFC Lymington took themselves to within one game of completing their league campaign unbeaten with a 3-1 win over Bournemouth. Manager Derek Binns who was perhaps rightly disgruntled with the Vase defeat against Wimborne earlier in the season, called his players to applaud the supporters after the win having won the title some five or six games previously. Bournemouth didn’t read the script though. Player/Manager Charlie Miles had a fine chance in the first half when Matt White put him clean through. Lymington’s Mike McDonnell came close towards the end of the first period and then wrong-footed the visitors defence just a couple of minutes after the restart to put the Champions ahead. With Danny Adams lobbing keeper Joe Miranda the hosts looked home and dry with around half an hour to go. With around ten minutes to go Gary Clark pulled a goal back for the Poppies who had seen two efforts thwarted by goal line clearance. Against the general run of play McDonnell added a third in the dying stages to seal the win. The same day, Saturday 27 April, saw Downton on their travels topple high flying Thatcham 2-1 thanks to goals from Chris Collinge and Craig Goddard despite having Steve Hillyer sent off early in the second half. This result helped Wimborne collect runners up spot, although perhaps they didn’t need that as they won 4-0, also on the road at Christchurch in the hosts’ final game of the season. Jamie Sturgess netted twice, the first being a somewhat bizarre one when the Christchurch custodian Jamie Frank cleared the danger only to see the ball rebound off the Magpie striker into the net. These sandwiched a Nicky Bridle goal whilst captain Pete Howard wrapped up proceedings with a penalty in the second half. The relative success in the two main Cup Competitions enhanced the League’s status but 1996/97 was very much AFC Lymington’s year – forty League games unbeaten under Derek Binns, and very worthy Wessex League Champions. In local county FA competitions the only silverware county-wise collected by one of our members was Wimborne with a 2-0 win over Wareham Rangers in the Dorset Senior Cup. The Purbeck side ended 14th in a 19 team Dorset Combination League this year. The Hampshire equivalent ended with the same score for Basingstoke Town over Waterlooville. In the Russell-Cotes Cup, members Gosport were somewhat overwhelmed (7-0) by Havant Town, who ended their season with a 3rd placed spot in the Southern League South Division. Forest Green Rovers won the title with 91 points from their 42 game schedule. St Leonards Stamcroft were runners up. Corsham Town collected the accolades in Wiltshire with a 4-1 win over Marlborough Town. Locally in the FA Cup, we had eleven teams enter at the Preliminary Round stage, and with eight drawn at home perhaps we should have seen more than half of those go through. Wimborne needed a replay to make it five. The 1st Qualifying Round saw two progress, one at first time of asking with Wimborne beating north Hampshire outfit Cove 5-0. Thatcham needed an away replay victory at Bemerton, going through with a best of five victory. Unheard of anymore, but AFC Lymington faced Thame United in two replays before a 3-1 defeat. Thatcham continued their fine form in the competition with a 3-1 win at Gloucester City. That could be described as an upset as the hosts were in the Southern League Premier Division (where they finished third) and were losing semi-finalists in the FA Trophy. Their progress was halted in no uncertain terms at the hands of Isthmian Premier side Boreham Wood one step from the First Round, ‘Wood went out to Luton Town two rounds later.

FA VASE 1996/97 In the Vase, it was Thatcham again who flew the League flag, reaching the 4th Round before bowing out at home against Tiverton Town. Our Salisbury side Bemerton also reached that stage also going down to a single goal defeat at the hands of Collier Row & Romford. This was the only season they appeared under that name. Formed in 1996 as a merger between Collier Row and Romford they collected the Isthmian Second Division title and for 1997/98 had dropped the Collier Row element, renaming as Romford. After a 1-0 win over Swindon Supermarine, the Harlequins then became the most travelled of our teams, clocking up the miles with wins at Porthleven by the odd goal in five, Odd Down 1-0 and Burgess Hill Town by the same score line. HAMPSHIRE COUNTY FA NEWS Following a recent HFA Board meeting, it is important to update our members in terms of the position with County Cup Competitions for Season 2020/21. It is likely that the new season (whenever we are able to return) is going to look and feel quite different whilst we adjust to easing of lockdown restrictions and the impact of Covid-19. With this in mind, we have made the difficult decision not to play county cup competitions in the usual traditional format for Season 2020/21. Instead, we will review the position in the new year and, if possible, look to operate competitions on a smaller scale towards the end of the season (with entry details to be confirmed nearer the time). This decision has been made primarily to give our sanctioned leagues the best possible opportunity to re-establish their respective competitions with our support at the earliest opportunity. This however sadly will mean that there will be no Saturday Senior Cup Competition played in the new season for the first time since 1918/19 (due to WW1) as we feel this could potentially adversely impact our clubs competing in the FA National League System at the business end of the season. We remain committed to completing our county cup competitions programme from Season 2019/20 and we will be working with the remaining teams in these competitions to schedule dates for playing postponed ties. We record our thanks to our leagues, clubs, participants and army of volunteers who remain supportive and positive in helping us to prepare for the restart grassroots football as soon as it is safe and practical to do so. Please note that we have not heard directly from either Dorset or Wiltshire county FAs on this subject.

THE FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS ASSOCIATION The Football Supporters' Association has partnered with the Non-League Paper to canvass supporter views on a return to football and we would like to ask for your support in promoting the survey on your league website and to your member clubs. The survey received close on 1,000 responses in the first 24-hours and can be accessed on the following links: bit.ly/non-league-survey https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/non-league-return Nobody knows yet when a new season will be announced but The FA has announced that the new season will only start when Government advice allows spectators to attend matches. We all hope that such an announcement comes as soon as possible but only when it is safe for us all. After talking with supporters and clubs the FSA believes that it will be helpful for clubs and leagues to understand what will make supporters feel reassured and confident about attending matches again. Non-league has always prided itself on being close to the fans and our local communities and this survey gives these supporters of non-league an opportunity to have their say on some of the key issues. The survey is anonymous but we believe that it gathers enough detailed data to allow analysis by club, by league and by demographic. The anonymised data will be published in the Non-League Paper on July 19th and we plan to share the results with leagues and FA colleagues. Our aim is that the information gathered on the attitudes of spectators will allow clubs and league administrators information that enables them to plan with more certainty. In launching the survey Northern Premier League Chairman Mark Harris said: “I think it’s critical, not only that we make our clubs ready to be playing football again at the earliest opportunity, but that we create an environment in which fans feel comfortable and confident they can come back and watch football safely. “Although the FA will be taking the lead in producing club guidance information, we need to ensure that guidance is well informed. We’re delighted to be working with the FSA and the Non-League Paper on this to ask fans for their thoughts, and we can’t do without them.” We have structured the questions so as to establish a baseline of pre-CV19 activity against anticipated post start of any new season activity and highlights any continuing areas of concern. Covering positive and negative drivers for attitude and behaviours towards football at a time of wider economic and social concerns. The survey seeks to gather data on key business and operational elements: attendance at matches (home and away), spend in the ground, and any further mitigation that would make spectators feel safe and have included a free text option for additional suggestions. Surveying supporters is a tangible demonstration of the importance of supporters’ views and also addresses any lingering discontent that some may have about the way that the season ended without consultation. The survey represents the biggest canvassing of opinions across the game since the declaration of the Health Emergency in March. The more fans that complete the survey the better the data for us all and we hope that your league and clubs will help promote the survey to as wide an audience as possible. I hope that you can help. Please let me know if you have any questions and if your league would like to request the data set for supporters of your member clubs.

Our 33rd Annual General Meeting takes place on Sunday 19th July 2020 via Zoom,

commencing at 10:30. Rule 2.20 applies.

“THE STREET IN CALIFORNIA”

Rather nearer home, both in terms of time and distance, this week with a Programme from August 2018 and a First Round Hampshire Senior Cup tie that saw Andover New Street drawn away to Eversley & California from the Combined Counties League. The home side’s geographical position is such that Eversley is just inside the Border with Berkshire and their Ground is on the edge of Yateley which is close to being in Surrey. But Hampshire is where they are and while their affiliation ensures entry in to the Senior Cup they are also regular participants in the Russell-Cotes Cup. The Ground, at least to me, is not the easiest to find and missing the entrance could lead to ending

up in a large landfill quarry! This was the first ever meeting between the two Clubs and all were afforded a warm welcome on a pleasant August evening. It is a fair step from the Clubhouse and Dressing Rooms to the playing area with various cricketing paraphernalia such as Sightscreens, Rollers and wicket covers to circumnavigate which is okay in daylight but not so clever in darkness – since the Club works on the principle so beloved by Totton in their days at Testwood Park in that all the lights are turned off within thirty seconds of the final whistle. Although the hosts were in Division One and New Street newly promoted to the top flight in Wessex a close game was expected and the first half was exactly that, end to end, until the visitors opened the scoring five minutes before the break. A long ball down the left was collected by Shane Lock and he turned inside before delightfully curling the ball over the keeper and inside the far post. The main threat from the home side came from the unusually named Clive Akem-Che who was very quick and skilful but, the final ball was too often missing. It was also noticeable that their captain, identified by a large armband, used his position to take every free kick and corner and a large percentage of the throws! Two minutes in to the second half the referee, who otherwise had a good game, stopped proceedings with New Street in a promising position in front of goal to award them a free kick some five yards outside the area for an earlier offence, and his blushes were perhaps saved when Luke Neller blasted the kick in to the roof of the net to double Street’s advantage. Midway through the half it looked game over as the home keeper totally misjudged a bouncing a ball that went over his head and in to the net with nobody near him. The keeper looked shamefaced, the referee gave a goal and the Assistant flagged with the goal then disallowed. Enquiries after the game failed to ascertain the reason with the Officials choosing not to give any explanation though a push was suggested, but who pushed who and when was never clarified. This appeared to awaken the home side and ten minutes from time the elusive Akem-Che was bought down in the area and the home captain – who else – converted the penalty to produce a rather fraught final ten minutes from the visitors viewpoint, but they held on to secure a place in the Second Round. So why Eversley and “California”. It appears it came from a merger with a Boys side called California and named after a local area that is now a Nature Park and was until the late 1950’s the site of a Speedway track, home to the California Poppies. So, in the end it was “California Dreaming” (The Mamas and Papas circa 1960’s) for New Street and a meeting with Portsmouth in the next round – but that is another tale.

WEEK 3 ROUND UP

Clubs attention is drawn to the League website, whereby they should click the on the link to access the relevant Ground Grading Documents and Questionnaire. These need to be completed carefully and accurately by all clubs within the next fortnight please, in accordance with correspondence sent to Club Secretaries. A further reminder for all those teams looking for new kits for the upcoming season, long standing FA Rules clearly state that NO player, including the goalkeeper, shall be permitted to wear black shirts or very dark shirts. This includes shirts where the back is primarily black with only a light coloured number. If in any doubt, please send in an image of your proposed shirt and we will advise if it is acceptable.
