MIDWEEK MATCH REPORTS

Mike Robins writes DOWNTON 3-2 WARMINSTER TOWN BIZARRE opening goal saw the Robins take the lead after just five minutes. Liam DANCE won the ball in the air just six yards out and the visiting defence were caught on the hop as the ball just seemed to roll into an empty net, with much pointing and shouting between the Warminster players. The visitors’ first real chance came when Ashton Shanley’s run was thwarted by a timely challenge as he shaped to shoot and Jack Miluk had a half chance across the face of goal at the Sports Centre end. Diego Romero’s skill and trickery cause the visitors issues all night long and he was instrumental in many of the Robins attacks, the first notable one just shy of the half hour when he got the ball to the bye line and against the odds collected a corner. At the other end Ernie Osei kept the home support on their toes, but it was Downton who extended their lead on 38 minutes, and it was another odd one. Warminster defender James Vincent and keeper Stewart Lisowsky together misread their cue cards and Abdul RAZAK was on hand to clip the ball home from around six yards. HT 2-0 Thoughts that a two goal cushion would be enough were shattered three minutes after the restart. A Harry Barnes free kick was dropped by Osei and Francois ALLEN was on hand to crash the ball home from close range to bring the score back to 2-1. However, it wasn’t long before Downton got back to a two goal lead. A deep free kick from out wide on the clubhouse side from Romero was collected by Dan SAVAGE who had enough time and space in the penalty area to turn and fire home.

Romero continued to torment the visiting defence and was perhaps unfortunate not to add to the tally, but it was Warminster who got the next and final goal. With defenders Lewis GRAHAM and Vincent being pushed into the attack- it was the former who saw his low drive find the far corner just beyond the reach of Osei to make it 3-2. Cue a lively final ten to fifteen minutes but the Robins held on and book a place in the next round of the Wiltshire Senior Cup. FT 3-2

MIDWEEK ROUNDUP

As has been the norm of late a number of games in a number of competitions though no Sydenhams League matches, with a League Cup Tie heading the fixtures on Tuesday and a Premier Division/Division One clash. US Portsmouth travelled to Premier leaders Alresford and gave the home side a fright by going in at the break a goal ahead through James Franklyn before experience told in the second half as seasoned campaigners Craig McAllister and Mike Gosney saw the home side through to the next round with a goal apiece. It was Premier Division against Division One in the Hampshire Senior Cup as well but with a different outcome as Petersfield continued their current good form with a 4-2 win at Cowes Sports. Harry Bedford scored twice for the visitors who now have a trip to Eastleigh to savour in the next round. There were four ties in the Russell-Cotes Cup and though the more “senior” sides do not always field their strongest side, that takes nothing away from Fawley’s superb result at Moneyfields where goals from Yemi Olabamiji and Lewis Connor gave them a 2-1 victory. A good win also for Alton as they extended AFC Stoneham’s current run of poor results by scoring three times without reply. Brockenhurst re-discovered their shooting boots with a 4-1 win over Hythe & Dibden, Freddie Bullard claiming two, and there were a number of proven goalscorers on the final scoresheet at Hamble Club where Lymington, currently a model of inconsistency, ran out 4-1 winners, Darren Ritchie (two), Steve Flynn and Micky Finch scored for the winners with Nathan Lynch getting the home side’s consolation goal. Finally three games in the Wiltshire Senior Cup that saw one close encounter and two runaway victories. There was a tight finish at Wick Lane where Downton came out on top against former Sydenhams League Club Warminster Town by the odd goal in five but the remaining two were typical of the mis-matches that these Competitions throw up, though that in no way intends any disrespect towards the winners. Laverstock and Ford scored six without reply – Russell Jones two – against Hellenic Division One side New College Swindon who are bottom of their League and have a goal difference of minus sixty eight having three times conceded double figures. But six goals was a mere drop in the ocean compared with the outcome at Western Way where Bemerton Heath scored nineteen without reply against Ludgershall Sports who have yet to gain a point in the Wiltshire Senior League this season. George Hallahan scored five, Liam Greenough four and Jordan Matthews a hat trick in what may be the highest score recorded by a Sydenhams Wessex League side in any competition but, as stated before, do such results do anybody any good. Just two games scheduled on Wednesday but without any positive outcomes. The Dorset Senior Cup tie between Swanage and Verwood was abandoned last week when the torrential rain made the pitch unplayable and was postponed this time with the pitch being unfit. A third attempt to settle the tie will be made next Tuesday at Verwood. They did slightly better at AFC Portchester where the Russell-Cotes tie with Fareham was abandoned at half time because of a waterlogged pitch with the score at one piece, Steve Ramsey for the hosts and Josh Benfield replying for the visitors – another game to be re-arranged in due course.

LOOKING BACK TO ROMAN TIMES

Brading Town will celebrate their 150th Anniversary in 2021, for which they are to be congratulated, and eight of those 150 years will have been spent as members of our League. After a very long stint in the Hampshire League they joined the Wessex League Division Two in 2004/05 and after two seasons were promoted to Division One which was subsequently re-named as the Premier Division Their two seasons in Division Two resulted in 16th and 3rd positions in the Table with the aggregate figures as follows:- P W D L F A Pts 84 40 15 29 171 134 135 Which equates to 2.03 goals and 1.60 pts per game The six seasons in Division One/The Premier Division saw them finish 10th, 13th, 14th.14th, 4th and 21st with the overall figures of:- P W D L F A Pts 250 89 50 111 398 461 317 Those in turn equate to 1.59 goals and 1.26pts per game Their best season was the fourth place in the Premier Division in 2010/11 when they amassed 82 points in finishing behind Poole Town, Bemerton Heath and Winchester City. Then, showing the vagaries of football, they plummeted to 21st place – one off the bottom – the following season and withdrew from the League, citing off-field problems and the financial costs involved, and returned to the Island League. In the same season as they finished fourth in the League, they reached the Second Round of the FA Vase

beating Hartley Wintney in the Preliminary Round. The two clubs have grown rather apart since then! Brading play at the Peter Henry Ground in the Town, named in honour of a Club Stalwart, and when the Island games were held on the isle of Wight in 2011 the Ground staged three Group matches, the fifth and third place play-off games and the semi-final between Guernsey and Aland. The latter incidentally was refereed by Lee Probert who recently retired from the List of Premiership Referees because of injury. The writer, who has visited the ground twice, saw another match that was a form of “International Standing” when Rozel Rovers from Jersey were drawn against Brading in the Hampshire Senior Cup that same year, with the visitors winning by two goals to one. Since returning to the Island League Brading have finished runners up on three occasions, including last season, and as this is written are currently in third place. And the Title of this piece? The Club are known as “The Romans” because of the history of the town that dates back to Roman Times. We wish them well in their Anniversary season.

DISCIPLINE Last month’s statement from the FA is not pleasant reading, in fact it is extremely disappointing. I have summarised the content as listed below. On a positive note, I offer my congratulations to ten clubs that do not appear on the list. Under Club Charges there was one club who collected an E20a, by failing to ensure players and or officials and or spectators conduct themselves in an orderly fashion. Club Suspensions, sadly one club with four Football debts and another has three. Offences affecting our League, of particular concern is that some 24 cases of violent conduct are reported for October! C1- unsporting behaviour [19] C2- Dissent by word or action [1] C3- persistently infringing the laws of the game [2] S1- Serious foul play [1] S2- Violent conduct [24] S4- denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball [3] S5- denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity by physical means resulting in a free kick or penalty kick [3] S6- use of offensive, insulting or abusive language or gestures [3] S7- receiving a second caution in the same match [9] E3h- Improper Conduct (including violent conduct and threatening and/or abusive language/behaviour) [2] E3k- FA Rule E3 - Improper Conduct (including foul and abusive language) [2] The total number of match bans is 135; plus there are 9 Sine Die cases on the list. Total of fines is £2,927.50.

WEEKEND MATCH REPORTS

Roger Allen writes SHAFTESBURY 1-3 AFC STONEHAM THIS was a well-deserved victory for AFC Stoneham as they dominated the game from the first whistle almost to the end of the game. It took them 20 minutes to fashion their first clear cut chance as Alex Welch broke up a Shaftesbury move in midfield to set Nathan Clements free. His shot was pushed away by Shaftesbury keeper Ben Harrison but only to Callum Laycock whose shot was blocked by Jack Vallis. Shortly after Welch was on the end of a cross by Tom Hogan but he could not control the shot as he ran into the area and the ball cleared the cross bar. Next it was Matt Bainbridge with a free kick that hit the side netting and then Laycock shot over the bar when well placed. In a rare attack, from a Luke Winsper free kick, a Vallis header went over the top off the cross bar. Just when it looked as though Shaftesbury had survived the first half unscathed, they conceded in the final minute of the half. Laycock released Scott HILLS and he finished low into the corner. In stoppage time Ben Wood for Shaftesbury shot wide. HT 0-1 At half time Stoneham substituted Edu Jimenez for Hogan and he made an immediate impact with a shot that was saved by Harrison. Three minutes in he made a more telling contribution as he beat his man and squared the ball to LAYCOCK who simply had to run the ball into the goal. On 65 minutes LAYCOCK scored his second and this time it was all his own work. Released down the left by a long ball he cut inside and scored from just inside the penalty area. It was a good time to score a 3rd goal because almost immediately Shaftesbury hit back. Substitute Malachi Benjamin squared the ball for WINSPER to unleash a shot that looped over Tom Parker-Trott after a deflection. After this Shaftesbury finally came more into the game but they were not able to mount any sustained pressure and it was Stoneham who came nearest to scoring when Laycock was denied his hat trick by Harrison as he broke free of a square defence. FT 1-3

John Gorman writes PEWSEY VALE 1-3 ANDOVER TOWN A welcome visit to Pewsey for the first time for the best part of four years and no problems as to the game being played despite the recent weather. The home side have had a difficult time since re-joining the League this season, culminating in being unable to field a side last week, but to their credit they had a full complement of players who served the Club well on the day. Perhaps understandably Andover made the better start and completely dominated the early stages and had an early chance when a Brendan Holmes through ball set Tom Pattison free but the shot was pulled across the face of goal. Home keeper Sam Tuttle left his line smartly to block Ruben Smith before Harvey Rutherford made ground at the other end but the cross was too close to the keeper. Andover had seen more than one shot blocked in a crowded area but found a way through after just nine minutes when Adam Pattinson found his way to the bye-line and his low cross was turned past Tuttle by SMITH. Zac Hine was a constant threat on the Andover left and Ben Emans should perhaps have done better when a cross found him unmarked but the shot was too high. Keiran McHardy in the visiting goal rather rashly raced almost to the touchline, was beaten to the ball by Harrison Lowe only for the shot, from a narrow angle, to

end in the side netting. As Andover went forward again a fierce goal-bound drive from Smith was inadvertently, and painfully, blocked by one of his team mates and the last action of the half, which had seen the game stuck in midfield in the later stages, saw Tuttle deal competently with a very strongly struck back pass. HT 0-1 There was a harsh caution for Pewsey’s David Cope immediately on the re-start before Andover doubled their lead, again in the opening ten minutes. Hine was inevitably the instigator with a cross that the home side failed to clear and HOLMES’s shot from the edge of the area took a slight deflection that left the unfortunate Tuttle flat footed. Smith saw a header land on the top of the net and when persistence and skill from Emans created a chance for Hine the shot grazed the wrong side of the post. Another Hine cross caused some hesitation between goalkeeper and defenders but there was no red shirt on hand before Tuttle – as in the first half – dealt easily with another difficult back pass. Andover’s two goal lead looked enough but they added a third halfway through the half. The home defenders left the ball to each other and Ethan O’KELLY showed some composure in slotting the ball past Tuttle. The keeper then made a very poor clearance and redeemed himself with a fine save from Emans and as, in Rugby parlance, both sides emptied their benches O’Kelly just failed to make contact with an Emans cross and each side picked up a caution. Andover had no cause for complaint over theirs. As the game rather meandered to a close the Andover defence suddenly disappeared allowing substitute Cameron Mackenzie a clear run only for McHardy to narrow the angle and block the shot. By now the game had moved in to stoppage time and Andover produced a repeat defensive with MACKENZIE this time beating McCarthy for a deserved and hopefully morale boosting consolation goal. Andover deserved their win and may feel that the scoreline should have been more convincing on a pitch on which did not always favour the ball players but credit to Pewsey for their attitude and effort. They never gave up and that spirit can serve them well in the weeks to come. An enjoyable afternoon and a warm welcome from people with whom it was nice to renew acquaintance. FT 1-3

WEEK SIXTEEN ROUND UP

We’ll start with some sad news for a couple of clubs this week, Charlie Dibba long associated with Bournemouth, Brockenhurst and Christchurch has sadly passed away- we extend our thoughts and condolences to his brother Lamin, family and friends. Bashley are another club in mourning; Kairen Morris, wife of Manager Paul and mother of (club captain) Brad and daughter Paige has also sadly passed away, we again extend thoughts and condolences to family and friends at this difficult time. Happily there is no need to make mention of the weather with only one match postponed and the almost full programme, when completed, saw defeats for the leaders of both Divisions. In the Premier Division Alresford went down to only their second defeat of the season, losing 4-1 at Horndean – two goals for Jack Maloney - as the home side re-discovered last season’s form and saw their lead cut to five points with all their challengers taking advantage and closing the gap. Portland made their longest journey of the season and returned to Dorset with all three points after a 3-0 win at Fleet, three different scorers leaving the North Hampshire Club still with only one home win so far, while Baffins Milton Rovers followed up last week’s win at Lymington with an impressive best of three goal victory at Hamworthy United. Max Wilcock scored both goals in Christchurch’s 2-1 win over Bashley and Hamble Club made it three losses in a row for Brockenhurst with a similar scoreline at the Community Centre. Fareham Town continued their goalscoring run with a 5-1 defeat of Tadley Calleva, two goals for Josh Benfield leading the way in Tadley’s fifth defeat in their last six matches, and Callum Laycock also scored twice as AFC Stoneham returned to winning ways with a 3-1 victory at Shaftesbury. At the bottom of the table Bournemouth won for the second week running with a 4-1 defeat of Cowes Sports on the Island – four different scorers including an own goal – while Solent University went down to their fifth defeat in a row as Sam House and Dom Falco helped Lymington to a three goal win at Test Park. Amesbury however stay in bottom place after going down 2-0 at home to AFC Portchester, their fifth defeat in a row, and. along with Cowes and Solent, are looking detached in the last three places. In Division One leaders Downton lost 4-2 at home to Laverstock & Ford in the Wiltshire derby with Russ Jones scoring twice as the victors and surrendered top spot on goal difference to Hythe & Dibden who shared six goals and the points at New Milton. A good point for the home side who conceded seven when the two sides met in Cup combat recently with Dom Taylor scoring twice. US Portsmouth fell behind to a Lee Vint goal at Verwood but four second half goals gave them the points and inflicted a fifth home defeat on the Potters. Alton remain in the top group after a 3-0 win at Ringwood – three

different scorers as is often the case with them - but Whitchurch went down by the same score at home to Romsey Town, the visitors avenging a defeat in the earlier meeting between the two sides. Petersfield continue to climb the table with a three goal win over Totton & Eling -a sixth straight League win for the home side whilst the Millers have now not won in five – while the most convincing win of the day came on the island with Newport scoring six without reply against Follands. Jordan Browne scored twice in a win that sent the Hamble Club in to the bottom two following East Cowes Vics two goal win at Fawley. The Islanders marked new manager Ritchie Woodburn’s first game in charge with only their second win of the season, both away from home, with the goals coming from Jimmi Burton and Liam Newbold. Finally, Pewsey went some way to putting last week’s problems behind them in a spirited display when going down 3-1 at home to Andover Town. A defeat, but a display to build on. A bad day for the leaders in both Divisions but some interesting results overall which keeps things ticking along nicely. And it was colder yesterday.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

At the summit of the Dorset Premier only Gillingham Town had a league outing, and they closed the gap at the top with a 2-0 home win over near neighbours Shaftesbury Reserves. Hamworthy Recreation defeated Balti Sports in the Dorset Senior Trophy 4-0 at Magna Road whilst Wareham and Corfe shared the points in a goalless draw at the Purbeck Sports Centre. The Dorset Premier League Representative side were in action in the FA’s Inter-League Cup and had a trip to the Channels Islands- Guernsey to be precise. They took the hosts to a penalty shootout after extra time; sharing six goals in the process- going through to the Quarter Final with a 5-4 win on penalties. They will face either the Peterborough & District League or the Herts Senior County League at home by way of reward. Moving east, we note that Bush Hill are the first team through to the Southampton Senior Cup Quarter Final, with a 6-0 win at Priory Rovers yesterday. In fact there were only two league games played as various cup competitions took precedence. Liphook and Stockbridge shared the points and six goals in the eastern part of the county, whilst Paulsgrove closed the gap at the top with a single goal victory over Hayling. Corsham’s second team moved second with a 1-0 win at Royal Wootton Bassett as leaders Wroughton weren’t in Wiltshire Senior League action. However, they weren’t idle as they progressed in the Wiltshire Senior Cup courtesy of a 2-0 win at league rivals Stratton Juniors. Perhaps the biggest surprise in that competition was at Trowbridge where the town team defeated Western League outfit Devizes by the odd goal in three. Purton went down to an odd goal in five home reverse against Malmesbury and Ludgershall’s miserable season continued with a single goal home defeat against Frome Collegians. The Hampshire Senior Trophy took precedence as far as the Wyvern League was concerned leaving just three league fixtures. Wimborne took advantage of Sholing’s inactivity to go top with a 2-0 win at Romsey. Poole beat Fareham 4-1 out at Blandford as their first team were scheduled to be at home against Merthyr but the awful accident on the M5 near Bristol gave the match officials no alternative but to postpone that game. In the only other game in this Division, Stoneham won by the odd goal in three against Horndean In the tables below [*] means a points adjustment has been made by the League concerned. Looking up, AFC Totton went down by the odd goal in seven at home against Cinderford Town but Sholing overcame north Devon basement dwellers Barnstaple 3-1 at Portsmouth Road. In the Premier Division, Gosport Borough won by the odd goal in three at Wimborne and Blackfield lost 4-1 at Taunton Town. Salisbury went down to a single goal defeat at Hayes & Yeading United.
