MIDWEEK MATCH REPORTS

Gary Day writes NEWPORT IOW 6-1 EAST COWES VICTORIA TENANTS played host to owners as Newport, at home, met East Cowes at the latter’s Beatrice Avenue Ground on a sweltering August Bank Holiday afternoon. A healthy crowd turned out. There was a blistering start to the game as the score was 1-1 and there was a red card shown, all in the opening eight minutes! Vics took the lead on three minutes when they were awarded a free-kick for a trip on Ahmed. BUTCHER took it and it was a ‘beauty’, neatly placed from just outside the box. For Vics though, that was as good as it was going to get as within three further minutes, a silly clash near to the half-way line between Newport’s Craig and Vics’ Harris put the Vics down to ten men, the old adage of - if you raise your arm then you run the risk - the Newport man getting a yellow for his part. Port were soon level when Kelly pumped a long cross into the Vics box and found SAMPSON who scored with a neat header at the far post. Only 15 minutes had elapsed when Port took the lead and a lovely ‘pass and move’ effort it was too, starting in midfield - Browne to Craig to Triggs, then back to Browne who located CRAIG who got into space and netted with a neat shot well into the corner. Ahmed worked an opening for Vics that was deflected for a corner whilst Port’s Wright put in Kelly but Vics keeper Steinborn-Busse was down to save. A Newport goal did come soon when Kelly played a free-kick in, the keeper punched the ball out low but only off SAMPSON who netted his second goal. Browne and Kelly had efforts just wide as Newport, taking full advantage of their extra player, used the width of the pitch effectively. Vics tried to hit back as Chapman made a good run and found Burton who played it on to Ahmed but he shot at Port keeper Streeter. Triggs fired wide for Port following a good run and lay-off by Craig. HT 3-1 The pace of the game slacked off a bit in the second half and Ahmed made a good run and found Burton who drove just past the post for Vics. Wright was substituted for Port and his replacement TAYLOR, received a Craig pass and struck a delightful first-time chip shot which floated into the far corner within thirty seconds of his introduction - you can’t get a better impact substitution than that - it was all in the Newport game plan, of course! It was now 4-1. Newport created further opportunities - Steinborn-Busse was out to save at Triggs’ feet, Browne set himself but shot at the keeper whilst Browne then tried a turning effort that went high over the bar. Next, the ever-dangerous Craig put a ball in that went straight across the face of the Vics goal and it was recycled with Wright’s effort being blocked. Newport continued to dominate as Lamb tried an excellent firm effort from distance on the left which Steinborn-Busse got down well to prevent sneaking into the bottom near corner. Late on, Vics sub Young shot wide but the ball was soon back at the other end as the Vics keeper was down low as Wright set up Craig who moved the ball to create space. However, Newport did score two late goals to rubber stamp their overall dominance. First, a cheeky back-heel by Craig found KELLY who netted with a firm and low shot. After an attempted Vics clearance put the ref on the floor (but only temporarily), Newport added number six when Wright’s cross field ball found KELLY who completed a late brace, a firm strike having cut in from the left. FT 6-1 Teams often struggle against ten men, but Newport played well and could have scored more goals. With the exception of the early red card the game was played in a fine spirit. On this showing the tenants are clearly making themselves well at home! John Gorman writes TADLEY CALLEVA 1-1 AFC PORTCHESTER ANYONE who strolled in to Barlows Park around nine thirty would have seen the two goals in stoppage time and the deciding penalty shootout without having to bother about the preceding ninety minutes. But that is rather unfair as it was a game in which both sides tried to go forward all the time, both tried to play football, but both on the night lacked a cutting edge in front of goal.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS

The first threat came from the home side, a nice move down the right sending Ryan Doherty clear but his chip over the advancing goalkeeper also went over the bar. Tadley goalkeeper Jack Martin was rescued by his defence when he came to the edge of his area for a ball he was never going to reach with Nathan Paxton’s shot blocked, and a difference in styles soon emerged with the visitors using the flanks and getting crosses in whilst the home side relied on quick breaks with the speedy Doherty at the forefront. The referee gave a free kick the “wrong way” and was strong enough to quickly reverse the decision with Owen Fee’s kick being headed over his own bar by a home defender.

Martin left his area again, this time to head clear, Portchester’s James Thompson was booked for a challenge that was rather on the late side and Doherty’s speed took him clear again but the cross passed untouched across the six yard box. A Luke Neller free kick suffered the same fate and the halftime whistle came with the scoresheet still blank. HT 0-0 The second half started with an attempt in the opening minute that was the nearest to a

goal so far as Owen Fee curled a left foot shot past Martin only to see the ball come back in to play off the inside of the far post and Paxton’s header was cleared off the line as the visitors pressed forward. Tadley quickly got back into the game with a shot from Connor Thorne similarly coming back off the post and keeper Brad Snelling was quickly out of his area to deny Doherty. A fierce Neller free kick was blocked, rather painfully one imagines, by the defensive wall and as the substitutions began the home side had loud appeals for a penalty turned down. Portchester rather surprisingly replaced Fee and the home side matched that by withdrawing Doherty before the referee reminded the experienced Rowan Vine who was running the game – and got a smile and a friendly pat in return. A Tadley player then collected a yellow card for simulation, not the brightest of actions when already having a caution to one’s name- and departed the field so quickly his number could not be seen. And so to the final minute(s). The pacy Terrell Lewis carried the ball in to the Tadley area, two shots were blocked but Rob EVANS forced the ball over the line for what most present thought would be the winner, but Tadley were awarded a free kick on the right touchline and Daryll PHILLIPS got his head to the cross and it was all square again. FT 1-1 Tadley missed their first spot kick and after each side had taken the statutory five kicks the sides were level at three apiece but Tadley scored with penalty number six, Portchester’s went the wrong side of the post and the home side were through to Round Three. An enjoyable game and well controlled by the Officials – just a lack of goals really. Mike Robins writes BOURNEMOUTH 1-1 DOWNTON TWO early goals at Victoria Park, one each ultimately led to the dreaded shoot out to decide this 2nd Round tie. The opening goal came in five minutes, Karol ROG was brought down inside the penalty area when trying to collect a fine through ball from Levi Ridealgh. He picked himself up and fired home the penalty to give the lead to the Poppies. Both sides were guilty of giving the ball away too often and easily , and chances were few and far between at either end- a teasing deep cross from Poppies’ Tyrone Carkeet was emphatically punched away by Ernie Osei and at the other end Laurence Larbi had a shot that was easily claimed by James Mayo. Downton got back on level terms on 19 minutes when a corner from the left was headed home by Dan SAVAGE. This seemed to lift the Robins’ somewhat and they came close to going ahead on 23 minutes when a Dan Telfer free kick smacked to safety off the upright. Round the half hour mark a Kev Foreman cross was just reached by Osei with Rog ready to pounce and the keeper kept his side in it with a super save to deny Claudio Carvalho with around ten first half minutes left. HT 1-1 The second half saw Downton restricted to long range shots and a decent Telfer free kick just after the resumption curled wide of the mark. Good approach play from Larbi found Andre Sousa in space but he miskicked and the chance was gone.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS

There were chances at the other end as well, Carvalho came close when his dangerous cross failed to test the keeper and substitute Edgar Zanin tested the keeper from around the edge of the penalty area. With Poppies reduced to ten with Howard Nhemachena sin binned, Downton failed to capitalise on the situation, in fact it was the hosts who came closest during that ten minute spell with Zanin again posing the main threat and he had a great chance in the dying minutes to grab a winner but it wasn’t to be, so the game went to penalties. FT 1-1 Downton went first and scored, Poppies’ Mayo then saved the second Downton penalty the only one saved as all were converted including one from the hosts’ keeper, the sixth- before it ended with a 5-4 win for Bournemouth. Roger Allen writes TOTTON & ELING 4-1 SOLENT UNIVERSITY FC NEITHER side had made particularly good starts to the season although Totton & Eling did hit seven against Pewsey Vale on Saturday to notch their first Division 1 win of the season. Solent had lost all of their six matches going into this first round tie in the Wessex League Cup. Solent had a great opportunity to take the lead as Millers keeper Eyres failed to control the ball with his feet and fouled Demunga as he looked to capitalise on the slip, penalty given. Up stepped Ethan Taylor for Solent who dragged the spot-kick wide. Calloway set up Matthews for Totton and he forced Solent keeper Londors to save and then Macauley laid the ball to Callaway who scuffed his chance and Londors was able to save with ease. Solent took a 28th minute lead with a good move as Ethan TAYLOR collected a pass from Beasley and made a purposeful run forward and went on to net with a fine finish from around 22-yards. The lead lasted less than four minutes though as Totton were awarded a free-kick and GAIN took it from fully 35-yards out and he netted direct with the ball going into the far corner. Solent looked to hit back with Mitchell’s shot being blocked and Penny picked up the scraps but the ball went over. Shouts of agony could be heard when Millers defender Beech fell awkwardly in midfield and it was a suspected broken ankle. The player was tended to and was eventually taken off on a stretcher following an eleven-minute delay to proceedings. The ball bobbled around in the Totton six-yard box from an Ethan Taylor corner but the keeper eventually gathered whilst Penny weaved his way into the box but Eyres made the save. A move involving Gain and Spencer produced a chance for Callaway, the shot being saved by Londors. HT 1-1 The Millers hit Solent with three goals in a nine- minute spell. Gain tried another free-kick from closer in and Londors got down to parry but CALLAWAY was on hand to fire home. CALLAWAY completed a swift brace, getting on the end of a ball played across the box and hit it first time. The Millers fourth goal came from a Solent attack as Matthews played a good ball that put BURNS in the clear and he fired low past the keeper. Both sides made changes but the three-goal Millers lead seldom looked under threat from there although late opportunities saw Penny fire off target whilst Burns drove wide for the Millers. Mahon, probably Solent’s best player in a poor performance generally, shot just over but the final whistle came soon after, and credit to Totton on the night. FT 4-1 This was quite a scalp for the Millers side and they now go on to face a home tie with fellow Division 1 side Andover New Street in Round 2. Hopefully, Tyler Beech will soon recover and lace up his boots again soon. Roger Allen writes HAMBLE CLUB 4-1 TOTTON & ELING On paper this should have been one sided and although the scoreline ultimately reflected this, the Millers, for the second time in a week, gave a good account of themselves against Premier opposition. In fact they started the quicker having much of the early play but Hamble gained the lead after 21 minutes with an excellent goal. It came from a Hamble corner which was cleared to the halfway line. Jordan RAGGUETTE was doing his defensive duties but he was first to the ball winning a tackle and advanced to

around 35 yards from goal where he let fly with his left foot. The ball sailed into the net giving Oliver Eyles in the Millers' goal no chance. This was the trigger that Hamble needed to gain control and from then until half time they had a succession of chances that they were unable to convert. HT 1-0 Totton again started the second half well but they soon conceded a second goal. Hamble were the bigger side physically in all compartments of the team and they made that pay from set pieces in the second half. On 52 minutes Eyles was forced into a good save from Ryan Wilkins at a corner but Nathan LYNCH reacted quickly to volley the ball home from 6 yards. The third goal came on 74 minutes and again it was from a corner that wasn't cleared. This time the ball broke to LYNCH again who was able to swivel, take a touch and drive the ball home from a narrow angle. Finally, with 4 minutes to go WILKINS got his reward for a strong second half performance when he was released to run onto a through ball and finish well past Eyles. Hamble must now turn their thoughts to another Friday night game in the League against Baffins Milton Rovers whilst, for the Millers, it’s also back to League business with a visit to Downton. FT 4-1

MIDWEEK ROUNDUP

After last week’s midweek football was dominated by the Hampshire Senior Cup, this week it was the turn of the Sydenhams Wessex League Cup to fill the schedule with six first round ties and nine more in the second round. In the first round AFC Stoneham continued their excellent start to the season with an 8-0 defeat of First Division Alton courtesy of a hat trick from Marcel Laptas with the other goals shared between five different players. Laverstock & Ford gave Premier Division highfliers Alresford a fright at Arlebury before going down by the odd goal in five with Craig McAllister claiming two for the home side. There was only one goal at Westwood Park but a precious one for Cowes as Jez Conway’s strike in the opening seconds of the game not only gave them victory over Horndean but a home tie against Newport in the next round. Petersfield defeated Verwood 2-1 in a close encounter but still no joy for Solent University. The students made the short trip to Totton & Eling and scored first through Ethan Taylor before missing a penalty and that is as good as it got as the Millers ran out 4-1 winners with Morgan Callaway notching two. The last Round One game was the only game played on Wednesday with Lymington winning 4-0 at Fawley, with Steve Flynn almost inevitably among the four scorers, and in one of the strange quirks that fixtures frequently throw up, the two sides meet again in the Vase on Saturday. In the second round the holders, Baffins Milton Rovers, needed penalties before overcoming Bashley in the Forest after both sides had scored once in normal time. Sadly it appears the actions of one visiting player bought little credit to himself, his Club or the League and the Match Referee is to be commended for his actions. Experience told at Western Way where Justin Bennett, Kane O’Keefe and Eddie Perrett shared six goals in the defeat of Andover Town with Bennett scoring three. First Division Downton held Bournemouth to a one all draw at Victoria Park before bowing out on penalties and Fareham could not re-produce their FA Cup form as Christchurch won 3-1 at Cams Alders. Pewsey Vale made the difficult journey to Hamble Club and acquitted themselves well before going out to a Jordan Ragguette goal- the only one of the evening, and Dan Sibley scored twice in US Portsmouth’s 2-1 victory over Follands. Everything of note happened in stoppage time and after at Tadley with Portchester taking the lead after ninety minutes only for Tadley to claim an immediate equaliser and then win the penalty shootout. The highest scoring game was at Clayfields where Hythe & Dibden beat Ringwood seven three with two goals apiece for strike duo Sam Woodward and Cain Prentice. Still two First Round Ties and eight in the second round to be completed after which the overall picture will be a little clearer.

CLUB NEWS

Former Pewsey Vale player Jon Guthrie netted on his debut for Livingston at the weekend, in his new clubs 4-1 victory against Ross County at Dingwall. A groundhopper recently visited Bemerton Heath Harlequins and was left impressed by the ground- three sides lined by very tall, neatly trimmed hedges and trees, giving a very enclosed feel. The clubhouse’s smart balcony whilst the whole ground is smartly painted in the club colours of black and white and the pitch was immaculate. Somebody obviously takes great pride in this ground. Lovely place. Goalkeeper Tom Rees has linked up with Fawley on a dual registration basis with Weymouth. Hamble Club have also re-signed Nick Watts both look to have been signed in time for the FA Vase games on Friday evening. In the Bankes Charity Cup Shaftesbury beat Brockenhurst 3-2 on penalties with the game ending two apiece on 90 minutes. Sam Herrington and Matt Hindle for the Rockies with Sam Rafael Ramos and Freddie Bullard the Badgers’ scorers. Bournemouth have added the signature of former player Patrick Wilson to their squad and he was involved for the Poppies in their home game yesterday.

THE FA CUP

With four Clubs definitely through to the next Round and a fifth, AFC Stoneham, having every chance of joining them if they can repeat their performance in the first meeting in their replay with Winchester City, a look at the opposition they face in the First Qualifying Round. Fortunately, and perhaps surprisingly, they have not been drawn to face each other. CHESHAM UNITED v FLEET TOWN Chesham are in the Southern League Premier South, currently in fourth place, and played Blackfield & Langley yesterday. Known as the “Generals” the Club moved from the Isthmian League to the Southern League in 2004/05 and have been in the Premier Division for the last ten years, finishing as runners up in 2013/14. Their best season in the FA Cup was in 1979/80 when they reached the Third Round Proper after ten ties, including three replays, before losing 2-0 at home to Cambridge United. Going back even further they were runners up at the old Wembley Stadium in the Amateur Cup in 1968. Their smart Ground is known as The Meadow and will involve a 90 mile round journey for Fleet. LONGLEVENS v PORTLAND UNITED Longlevens is basically just inside the (A417) Gloucester Bypass off Corinium Avenue close to the Ibis Hotel and the Football Club play in the Hellenic League Premier Division and are in ninth place at present, having finished sixteenth last season. The Club only moved up from Gloucestershire County Football to the Hellenic League in 2014/15 and won promotion to the Premier Division at the first attempt. This therefore is only their fourth season in the FA Cup over the course of which, including this season to date, they have won five out of nine matches. A 250 mile round trip for Portland which probably will not seem anything out of the ordinary to them. HYTHE & DIBDEN v KIDLINGTON Kidlington lies five miles north of Oxford and were members of the Hellenic League from 1954/55 to 2015/16 when they gained promotion to the Southern League - the only time they ever topped the Hellenic League - where they have since played in both the West and Central Divisions and currently occupy fourteenth place in the Division One Central, where, because of their location, they have to undertake some fairly lengthy journeys.

Their best season in the FA Cup was in 2015-16 when they reached the Second Qualifying Round before losing four two at Gloucester City. Like Hythe they are one of the relatively small number of Clubs who play in green. WESTON SUPER MARE v FAREHAM TOWN A round trip approaching 300 miles for Fareham with the opposition again coming from the Southern League Premier South (it would be nice if they were a little more imaginative with their League names) and currently sitting in third place in the table with nine points prior to Saturday’s meeting with Salisbury. The Club were long time members of the Western League until joining the Southern League in the early nineties and then enjoying some fifteen seasons in the Conference before being relegated at the end of last season. They reached the First Round Proper

of the FA Cup last season before losing 2-0 at home to Wrexham. The Club is known as “The Seagulls” so with the “Creeksiders” as visitors they should both be used to the Ozone atmosphere, moreso if the tide at Weston has retreated to Wales as seems often the case. AFC STONEHAM v TAUNTON TOWN – possible and hopefully. The is a tough draw for the Sydenhams Premier Division new boys with Taunton well established in the Southern League since 2003, following a very lengthy spell in the Western League. After twice losing in play-offs they gained promotion to the Southern Premier in 2017/18 and lost out on a second successive promotion when pipped by Poole, again in the play-offs. Taunton won the FA Vase in 2000-01 and reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup in 2016-17 when they lost in a replay at Barrow – nice trip for midweek! They enjoy a healthy and often voluble support and as a complete aside the Town boasts one of the nicest Grounds in County Cricket. Very best wishes to all our Clubs.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

This week we’ll start in the National League. Former members Eastleigh stay 19th in the League after a 2-1 home defeat against Barnet. In the National League South Havant & Waterlooville lie second, but five points adrift of leaders Wealdstone. They won yesterday at Oxford City scoring three without reply. In the Southern League Poole Town are top of the Premier Division maintaining their early form with a 1-0 win at Swindon Supermarine yesterday. In the same Division, and of interest to two of our FA Cup ties- Chesham beat Blackfield & Langley by the odd goal in three whilst Weston super Mare also collected three points. Salisbury shared six goals at Tiverton, but in the lower reaches, Wimborne Town collected a vital win over Walton Casuals 4-1 and Gosport Borough could only draw 1-1 against Hayes & Yeading United. Step 4, the Southern League Southern Division saw Winchester City score three without reply against Melksham Town to go 5th but it was a mixed bag of results for our former members as Moneyfields ended honours even at one apiece against Cinderford whilst AFC Totton came home empty handed from Barnstaple with a 1-0 defeat, and remain at the foot of the table without a point thus far. Thatcham Town collected the three points at Paulton to go second.

More locally, in Dorset Hamworthy Recreation continued their 100% record with an emphatic 7-1 win at Sturminster Newton United, whilst Westlands won by the odd goal in nine at Merley Cobham (picture left) to keep a three point gap at the top. Corfe Castle scored five for the second consecutive time (Wareham in midweek and Shaftesbury yesterday) to move into the top half of the table. Balti took advantage of the results to move third on the back of a 3-0 win at Sherborne.

Finally Swanage and Dorchester Sports, the only two to enter, were paired at Days Park in the FA Vase and it was the visitors who progressed with a 1-0 win. Heading eastwards in the Hampshire Premier League, first of all Stockbridge were alone in representing the League in the FA Vase but went down to a single goal defeat at Devizes Town. The top three all shared points with Infinity sharing four goals at Fleetlands and Bush Hill drawing 1-1 at Colden Common. Winchester Castle remain rooted to the foot of the table and went down by the odd goal in three at Liphook yesterday afternoon. Purton went second in Wiltshire on the back of a 3-0 win over Holt whilst Kintbury dropped points in a 1-1 draw at Cricklade. Shrewton and Wroughton keep pressure on the top places both winning on the road, the former running in six without reply at Ludgershall.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS

WEEK FIVE ROUND UP

Seventeen sides through to the next round of the Vase, partially due to a large number of all-Sydenhams ties, and two replays to follow so a good day for the League overall. The Vase burst in to life with three ties on Friday evening, two of which saw the Premier Division prove too strong for Division One opponents. Nathan Lynch scored twice as Hamble Club beat Totton & Eling 4-0 and Fareham scored two goals in the last ten minutes to advance at Whitchurch’s expense. In the third tie Fleet Town, having been given home advantage by Ascot United, came from two goals down to draw three all – two goals from Aaron Redford – and the sides will meet again at Fleet on Tuesday.

On to Saturday and the matches involving Clubs from other Leagues which ended with two wins and three defeats. Bashley, not unusually, had the largest crowd of the day – one assumes the figure was not exceeded at Bemerton who declined to report their attendance – with 135 people watching the home side comfortably defeat Western League Bridport by three goals to nil. A very good win too for Downton as they travelled to Calne and returned home with a 3-1 victory helped by two goals from Tom Moseley but in the remaining matches the Western League came out on top. Westbury were too strong for Andover Town, winning four one at the Portway, and Sherborne triumphed by the odd goal in five at US Portsmouth whilst still no joy for Solent University. The draw was not very kind, pairing them with Bradford Town who have a good Vase pedigree, and the visitors ran out 7-2 winners, the home side’s goals from Luke Mitchell and Ryan Penny.

On to the all- Sydenham ties in largely alphabetical order with Alton winning by the odd goal in three against Andover New Street at Anstey and Amesbury going down, as they did in the FA Cup, at home to Christchurch this time by four goals to one. Extra time was needed at Western Way to separate Bemerton Heath and Alresford with a George Hallahan penalty ultimately proving decisive for the visitors. Joy for both the Cowes Clubs with Cowes Sports scoring two second half goals without reply against Shaftesbury at Westwood Park and East Cowes, after conceding six in each of their last two games, keeping a clean sheet and winning one nil at Follands courtesy of an own goal. Dan Wooden scored twice in AFC Portchester’s 4-1 win at New Milton and there were goals galore – eventually - at AFC Totton where Lymington hosted Fawley AFC. The scores were level at one apiece after ninety minutes yet half an hour later the Premier Division side had come out on top by five goals to two with a hat trick from Mike Gosney that included two penalties. A surprise at Love Lane where a late Marvin Orepo goal, the only one of the game, saw Petersfield beat AFC Stoneham and a single goal victory also for Laverstock & Ford at Pewsey Vale with Adam Bourner the matchwinner. In the final game the local derby between Verwood and Ringwood finished one each after extra time and all will meet up again at Potterne Park on Tuesday. An obviously shortened League Programme saw just three games in the Premier Division and one in Division One. A Jason Parish goal was enough to give Baffins Milton Rovers the points at Bournemouth and Portland returned from their long haul to Tadley with a share of the spoils after a one all draw. At Five Heads Park there was a first win of the season for Horndean and a first defeat for Hamworthy United with Bobby Scott scoring twice in the home side’s 3-0 victory, though the Dorset side retain their place at the top of the table. In the Division One encounter two of the League’s higher scoring sides, Hythe & Dibden and Newport, largely cancelled themselves out with Zac Willis’s lone strike giving the home side the points. The FA Cup next week but a much larger League Programme which may begin to make matters look a little clearer with regard to the respective tables. Finally a form of “Official Watch”. A family commitment meant I was absent without leave from Sydenhams football yesterday and watched Exeter City v Mansfield in the Football League. The two Assistants were Justin Amey, formerly of this Parish and Mike Desborough, very latterly of his Parish, whilst the fourth official was Mark Derrien who memory suggests was also on our League list at one stage. You cannot escape the Sydenhams League – even in delightful Devon!
