1. Did you know that the first Oktoberfest was held in 1810 to celebrate Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig’s marriage on the 12th of October? The citizens of Munich were invited to join in the festivities, which were held over five days on the fields in front of the city gates. 40 000 people were in attendance.

2. In the beginning, beer was not available at Oktoberfest. Alcohol could only be purchased and enjoyed outside the venue.

3. Oktoberfest has been cancelled 24 times because of disease and war. In 1854 and 1873, cholera epidemics forced the fest’s postponement. It was also cancelled during the Franco-Prussian War, WWI and WWII.

4. Did you know that Albert Einstein worked at the festival? He was employed as a trainee in his uncle’s electrical company, and the then-owners of the Schottenhamel tent decided that they wanted to be the first to take advantage of electric lighting, which is why Einstein was employed to screw in light bulbs.

5. Despite its name, Oktoberfest actually starts in the third week of September and lasts until the first Sunday in October. #Septemberfest

6. Only six breweries that brew within the Munich city limits are allowed to participate in Oktoberfest:

Hofbräuhaus München, Spaten-Franziskaner-Bräu, Paulaner Bräu, Löwenbräu, Hacker-Pschorr-Bräu and Augustiner Bräu.

7. The mugs themselves are hot items at Oktoberfest. Security guards annually recover approximately 150 000 from would-be souvenir hunters. Many are not recovered: The Hofbräu tent alone averages 35 000 missing each year. The fine for stealing a souvenir mug is R600.

8. Glass steins were late to the party: It wasn’t until 1892 that beer was served in glass mugs. Traditional beer steins were made of stone and later metal, and while some of those are still used, they are far outnumbered by their modern glass cousins. 9. You can’t start drinking until the mayor says so. Since 1950, the festivities only begin when, at noon, twelve guns sound a salute and the mayor cracks open the first beer barrel, yelling “O’ zapft is!” (“It’s tapped!” in the Bavarian dialect). The mayor then hands the first beer to the Minister-President of the State of Bavaria.

10. In November of 2008, Bavarian waitress Anita Schwartz broke the record for most beer steins carried at once. Schwartz balanced 19 full beer steins—5 in each hand, and 9 positioned on top of these—and walked 40 meters without spilling.

“Bewys  vir  my  waar  ek  dit  ontvang  het,  ek  het  dit  nie  ontvang  nie,  so  ek  is  nie  aanspreeklik  nie.”  ‘n  Sin  wat  ons  daagliks  hoor  wanneer  iemand  reageer  op  ‘n  aanmaning  en/of  dagvaarding.  Ons  het  dit  goed  gedink  om  die  lesers  in  kennis  te  stel  van  die  Konstitusionele  Hof  se  uitspraak  in  Kubyana  v  Standard  Bank  2012  (5)  SA  142  CC  wat  meer  duidelikheid  oor  hierdie  situasie  sal  skep.  Die  Hof  het  twee  vrae  gehad  wat  beantwoord  moes  word:  Wat  is  die  stappe  wat  'n  kredietverskaffer  moet  neem  om  te  verseker  dat  die  kennisgewing  van  wanbetaling  ‘n   verbruiker   bereik   voordat   'n   verbruiker   litigasie  mag   begin?   Tweedens,  wat  moet   die   kredietverskaffer   bewys   ten   einde   die   Hof   te  bevredig  dat  hy  sy  verpligting  behoorlik  nagekom  het  om  lewering  van  die  statutêre  kennisgewing  aan  te  bring.  In  terme  van  die  Nasionale  Kredietwet,  artikel  130  saamgelees  met  artikel  129  word  voorgeskryf  dat  kennisgewing  aan  ‘n  verbruiker  gestuur  moet  word  na  die  adres  wat  die  verbruiker  gekies  het,  synde  sy  domicilium  adres,  waar  hy  betekening  van  alle  kennisgewings  sal  ontvang.  Die  Konstitusionele  Hof  het  bevind  dat  indien  ‘n  kredietverskaffer  ‘n  kennisgewing  stuur  na  die  adres  wat  deur  die  verbruiker  gekies  is,  die  plig  op  die  verbruiker  rus  om  die  Hof  te  bewys  dat  hy  dit  nie  ontvang  het  nie  en  dat  dit  nie  ‘n  regsplig  op  die  kredietverskaffer  plaas  om  die  Hof  andersins  te  bewys   nie.   DIt   is   dus   belangrik   dat   verbruikers,   indien   hul   van   adres   verander,   dit   duidelik   en   skriftelik   onder   die   aandag   van   die  kredietverskaffer  moet  bring.  So  in  die  toekoms  verseker  dat  jy    nie  onverwags  betrap  word  waar  aksie  teen  jou  ingestel  word  sonder  dat  jy  kennis  dra  van  ‘n  dagvaarding  en  by  gevolg  vonnis  teen  jou  toegestaan  word  nie.

1. Simply dab your stamp on the ink pad and test on paper to see if you need to dab more or less ink on it to get the desired effect.

2. Place the stamp in the section you want to stamp and try not to move it around while applying pressure on it. On glazed surfaces this is tricky but if you’re gentle you will get it done without difficulty. Don’t stress if you have a bit missing on a little section or get it smudged – the overall look will be slightly distressed and simply adds to the charm of the piece.

3. After it has dried properly you can glaze it with a couple of layers podge, making sure it dries thoroughly between layers. Bake your bowl, plate or mug for 60 minutes on 90 degrees Celsius with the door of the oven slightly open. Different makes of glaze have different baking requirements so be sure to read the instruction carefully. We were truly thrilled by the final result – now you give it a go!

Suid-Kaap Kinder-koorHier is al ons leerlinge wat vanjaar aan die Eisteddfod deelgeneem het. Ons is saam trots op julle pragtige uitslae.

Ons is so trots op ons Gr. R leerling, Miancke Moolman wat gekies was om by die Mosselbaai - Gala Aand optetree nadat sy by die Eisteddfod weggestap het met ‘n A+.

Laerskool Hartenbos is so trots op HJ Nell en Philendro Voigt wat aan die SA Land-loop Kampioen-skappe deel geneem het op P a c a l t s d o r p . Baie geluk met die uitstaande prestasie.

Ons Gr. 3 leerlinge se unieke San tekeninge tydens hulle les oor die San en hoe dinge in daardie tyd gelyk het.

Ons het Loslitdag met styl gevier en ons leerlinge het geskitter met al die blik. Ons Skakelraadlede, saam met Hoofleiers, Wally Roux, Christi Snyman, Charlene Johnson en Nadeane Maritz het ons personeel bederf met pragtige blomme en eetgoed! Ons ondersteun elke jaar ‘n liefdadigheidsprojek om terug te gee van so baie wat ons skool ontvang.

Die Suid-Kaap Kinderkoor, het 7 September 2014 nog n eerste vir die Suid-Kaap behaal toe die koor tydens die finaal van die ATKV Animato Internasionale Koorkompetisie, by die Hugo Lambrechts Ouditorium in Parow, as beste Kinderkoor, asook algehele beste koor van die kompetisie, aangewys is.

Op 30 Augustus 2014 ʼn baie suksesvolle Manne-aand by die Mosselbaai Rugbyklub aangebied. Johann Muller oud-Springbok rugbykaptein het as gasspreker opgetree. Verskeie groot pryse is opgeveil. Daar was ʼn heerlike spitbraai, deur Mnr. Barlow van Barlie’s Slaghuis. Ons wil graag alle borge en persone wat ons skool goedgesind was met hierdie geleentheid, opreg bedank. Dankie aan die Gr.R-opvoeders vir hul puik organisering.

Op Donderdag, 4 September het die SAOU in samewerking met die burger die jaarlikse Vasvrae vir Laerskole by Laerskool Durbanville aangebied. Drie-en-twintig skole het deelgeneem. Laerskool Totius was die wenner met Laerskool Jan van Riebeeck tweede en Laerskool Park derde. ʼn Skrale punt het tweede en derde plek bepaal. Baie geluk aan Christiaan v.d. Walt, Charl Burger , Carla Grobbelaar en Hansie Barnard.

Ons Gr.6 leerders was op ʼn leierontwikkelingskamp vir 3dae by Wilgewandel Vakansieplaas.Deur middel van groep-, en spanwerk is lewenswaarders soos , geloof, respek,dapperheid, geduld en uithouvermoë vasgelê. Aan die foto’s is dit duidelik dat die groep dit terdeë geniet het.

Ryk Smit, Divan Oosthuizen en Mathew Golden is na die Dinsdag, 3 September se proewe te Curro ingesluit in die o/11 Krieket Streekspan.

Laerskool Park het op 20 September 2014 ʼn Ma en Dogtertee gehou ten bate van KANSA. Dit was ʼn prettige en pragtige oggend vol vermaak. Diev olgende persone was almal betrokke, ACE Models, Dynamic Dance Studio, eie Park Leerders ingesluit. Arnelda Oosthuizen, oftewel Maria van Maria Art, was die gasspreker

en Denise Lloyd, ons seremoniemeester, het die mense laat skaterlag met haar pittige sêgoed. Die baie stalletjies en pryse wat gewen is, het ook bygedra tot hierdie onvergeetlike oggend. Dankie almal se bydraes, borge, donasies en die gasvrouens vir hul moeite om elke tafel spesiaal te laat lyk.

Sylken November, from Outeniqua Primary, played the Southern Cape Women’s open and closed golf championship last weekend. She won the best junior prize for the C-division. Well done!

Laerskool Outeniqua se 0/11 skaakspan het tydens die 2014 Wes-Kaap Topskole Toernooi in Saldanha, tweede geëindig. Op die foto is die trotse span met hul silwer medaljes.

Die Early Actklub van Laerskool Outeniqua het op 10 September 2014 hulle gemeenskapsprojek, nl. ‘n uitreik na die Wikkelwurms by Bethesda, suksesvol afgehandel. This initiative comprises a stimulation programme for children with developmental delays (ages 2 - 6) and from disadvantaged families.

The Vocal Ensemble of Outeniqua Primary in a joyous mood, having been chosen to take part in the Artscape Schools Arts Festival Gala Evening. Close to 3000 children took part in the Festival and only sixteen items are chosen to perform at this prestigious event. They were awarded a trophy in the section “Excellent Vocal Performance”. The Vocal Ensemble was also invited to take part in the George Loerie Eisteddfod Festival Concert where only participants who achieved 98% or more are included in the programme. We are proud of our singing ambassadors!

Christo Lamprecht van Laerskool Outeniqua is deur die Suid Afrikaanse Gholf Vereniging uitgenooi om in die ouderdomsgrop 14-17 aan ‘n gholf toernooi in Beijing deel te neem, op grond van gholf prestasies. Ons is baie trots op hierdie uitsonderlike prestasie.

Volschenk vs Paarl SkoolDie Volschenkers het tydens die pasafgelope Eisteddfod weer bewys hoe talentvol hulle is.

Die Junior Koor het Goud+ behaal en die Senior Koor Goud. Beide kore was die wenkore in hul onderskeie klasse. Al hierdie Volschenkleerders het tydens die Eisteddfod Goud+ verwerf.

Hulle puik uitslae lyk soos volg:

Laerskool Volschenk het op Vrydag, 12 September, hul jaarlikse sportafsluitingsfunksie gehou. Deur die dag is loslitdag en entrepreneursdag gehou. Laatmiddag en aand het kleurspanne rugby en netbal teen mekaar gespeel. Die dag is afgesluit met ‘n heerlike spitbraai, sokkiejol en DVD.

Op Vrydag, 5 September, het 45 leerders en agt personeellede van die Paarl Skool vir gestremdes in Brackenfell, hier op Riversdal kom kuier. Die Vollies het vir hulle Vrydagaand ‘n heerlike braaivleisete gegee. Saterdagoggend is daar eers netbal gespeel en daarna het die junior sokkerspan teen Laerskool Volschenk

gespeel. Dit was die eerste keer in Volschenk se bestaan dat daar sokker gespeel is! Die senior span het teen Gerrit du Plessis gespeel. Die kinders het dit ongelooflik baie geniet en nuwe vriendskapsbande is gevorm. Paarl Skool het al klaar laat weet dat hulle volgende jaar weer kom kuier.

Anrie Greef (gr. 7) het aan die SA-Skopboks- kampioenskappe in Kaapstad deelgeneem. Sy het twee goue medaljes verower en is opgeneem in die SA-Skopboksspan wat Suid-Afrika in Julie 2015 in Orlando, Florida, verteenwoordig.

Hierdie vyf Volschenkers is na afloop van die Hessequa-krieketproewe, in die Hessequa-krieketspan opgeneem.

Teagan Kuyler en Danika Nel was van die jongste deelnemers by die jaarlikse Jeugskou van die George Landbouskou. 45 Kinders van Laerskool Blanco het deelgeneem aan die Jeugskou.

Tweelinge “galore”! Die skool het tans 9 groepe tweelinge vanaf onderwysers tot graad 1.

Laerskool Blanco leerders besoek die strand met ‘n jaarlikse klasuitstappie as belonging vir goeie fondse wat gedurende die kwartaal ingesamel is.

Die graad 7 leerders kry geleentheid om hul sakevernuf te ontwikkel met ‘n entrepreneurdag wat deel vorm van hul EBW kurrikulum. Die kinders is baie kreatief en het goeie sakgeld vir die vakansie verdien.

Die 0/10 netbalspan van vanjaar het uitstekend gevaar. Hulle is onoorwonne in hul liga en het ook aan verskeie toernooie deelgeneem. Juf. Hannelie du Preez en Marcelle Lintvelt het hierdie groep leerders afgerig.

Omgewing bewaring en bewusmaking genie took prioriteit by Laerskool Blanco. Hierdie inheemse habitat leer kinders van die plante wat in omgewing voorkom.

‘n Nuwe snoepie word tans by die skool gebou. Hierdie inisiatief word gedryf deur die skool se Pre-Prim onderwysers.

Juf. Dalena van Greunen het ‘n uitdagende staptog aangepak gedurende die kwartaal.

Neil Bekker, Leané Nell, Vian Gericke en Hanno Geldenhuys was bevoorreg om aan die nasionale Astro Quiz-kompetisie deel te neem. Die kompetisie was baie verrykend en die hele Kaapstad-uitstappie was vir hul ‘n wonderlike ervaring.

Alhoewel die SAOU-vasvrae kompetisie ‘n groot uitdaging vir ons Gr. 7-leerders was, het hul elke oomblik daarvan geniet. Gerhard Ackerman, Neil Bekker, Kirsten Grobler en Leané Nell was baie opgewonde oor al die kennis wat hul met hul voorbereiding opgedoen het! Die uitstappie Kaap toe was ‘n groot ondervinding vol pret en plesier en sal nog lank onthou word.

Die afgelope kwartaal het ons seuns en dogters baie blootstelling op die hokkieveld gekry. Ons spanne het aan verskeie toernooie deelgeneem en goeie ondervinding is opgedoen. Luca Potgieter is ‘n hokkiespeler wat baie vaardig is met sy hokkiestok. Hy beskik beslis oor die nodige vaardighede om in die toekoms ‘n hokkiespeler van formaat te wees.

Die jaarlikse Jong musikante konsert is ‘n groot hoogtepunt op die musiekkalender! Ons is baie trots op ons leerders wat tydens hierdie kompetisie as wenners aangewys is. Eckardt Muller, Gr. 7, is as beste junior sanger aangewys, Kaylen Grobler, Gr. 4, was die wenner van die Junior Blokfluit-afdeling en Marize Gouws, Gr. 6, het by die beste junior dwarsfluit-afdeling met die louere weggestap.

Ons is baie trots op ons Gr. 1-dogter wat baie goeie welslae behaal het by die Wes-Kaap spelfees-uitdunne! Ané Prins ‘n derde plek in die Wes-Kaapkompetisie behaal en deur-gedring na die finale rondte!

Ons wens haar baie sterkte toe vir die nasionale k o m p e t i s i e wat eersdaags gehou word.

Die 0/13A-hokkieseuns het hul hokkieseisoen op ‘n hoogtepunt afgesluit. Hul het groot welslae by die Kenridge-toernooi op Stellenbosch behaal! Hier is Eugene van der Merwe in aksie. Hy het met gemak sy opponente uitoorlê op die Stellenbosch Astro baan. Afgesien van sy hokkie-vaardighede, vaar hy ook uitstekend in die swembad! Hy is ‘n kranige swemmer van wie ons nog baie sal hoor! Ons is baie trots op hom wat die SWD-kortbad kampioenskappe oorheers het!

Eers was hulle die beste 0/10-skaakspan in George! Toe besyw hulle hulself as die sterkste o/10-span in SWD. Nou is George Voorbereiding-skool trots om aan te kondig dat hierdie span ook ‘n silwer medalje by die Weskaap-Topskole verower het.

Die o/9-hokkiedogters van George Voorbereidingskool het die afgelope seisoen pragtig ontwikkel.

Judo-kompetisieLogan Jantjies van George Voorbereid-ingskool het twee medaljes tydens die Judo-kompetisie in die Kaap gewen. Hy het ‘n 1ste en 2de plek in sy afdeling gekry.

Glenwood House held its very first Arts Festival on the 29 August. The festival took on the format of a mini KKNK. Various shows were presented in the classrooms while the Music Academy hosted the music recitals. Both the Junior and Senior choirs performed with the South Cape Children’s choir joining in the festivities later in the day. Art from the Pre-prep, Prep and College was displayed. Parents and children joined in the fun and a perfect day, albeit the rain, was enjoyed by all.

BATTLEFIELD 4No doubt about it, Battlefield 4 on the PS4 is hands-

down one of the best ways to experience this absolutely thrilling multiplayer shooter. The visuals look roughly a billion times cleaner, which has a direct effect on the amount of enjoyment you’ll derive from playing it. Few things are as exhilarating as fighting in massive battles with a total of 64 players, watching soldiers duke it out in the streets while tanks hurl shells at anything that moves. ASSASSIN’S CREED 4: BLACK FLAG

We weren’t too sure what to think when we heard that the Assassin’s Creed franchise would be heading to the high seas in a pirate-filled adventure. What we definitely didn’t expect, though, was for our Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag review to call it the best AC yet. Seriously, it’s that good. The land combat is as strong as ever, and features some of the most interesting outdoor locations we’ve explored in the series--but it’s really the open ocean where AC4 is at its best.

FINAL FANTASY 14: A REALM REBORN

Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn captures a lot of what we love about the franchise: It’s got a great story, deep RPG combat and progression. And, despite it being an MMO, which are typically overly complex, it’s a game that plays quite well with a controller. Sure, it’ll take some getting used to, and yes, FF14: ARR is a bit overwhelming at first. But onceyou do, and once you get acclimated to the controls, you’ll be partying up with others to take down towering raid bosses (Titan, anyone?) in no time. Do be warned, however: because of the constantly-evolving nature of this MMO, you will have to pony up a monthly subscription fee to play it. Worth it? You bet.

Ons jaarlikse sportafsluiting sorg vir groot opwinding. Die 0.13-seuns daag die dogters uit.

The Knysna Primary U/13 Girls and their coaches with the trophies they won during the 2014 Hockey Season. This very talented team won the U/13 Girl’s Trophy at the Sedgefield Tournament, they won the Knysna Regional League and then went on to be the overall winners of the SWD League. They

received the Pam Golding Trophy for this achievement. This team also went on tour to the Cape and won all their games. Their coach, Miss Marandre Pelser and assistant coach Miss Este’ Cilliers are very proud of their team and we congratulate them on all their successes.
