DARK MONDAY: The pupils of Kayamandi HighSchool had to start their exams an hour lateon Monday – the school’s electricity had beencut off, and it was too dark for them to startwriting at 08:00 as planned. This follows aspree of electricity theft from the school’s powersupply point, causing the electricity to fluctuateand putting the school in danger. The electricitywas cut off as a safety measure, but the powerfailure posed a number of problems for theschool. Teachers were unable to make copiesof exam papers, and practical exams had tobe postponed. The school was also hit by bur-glars over the weekend as the alarm had beenof order. New bases for TB troopsSTELLENBOSCHUniversity’sDes-mondTutuTBCentrehasbolsteredthe battle against tuberculosis bydonating site offices to clinics inKayamandi locally and Mbekweniin Paarl.

Thedonation formedpartof thecen-tre’s goal of lowering the high rate ofTB in communities in the WesternCape.

The offices, on the grounds of theKayamandi and Mbekweni clinics, had been used by the Desmond TutuTB Centre during its Zambia–SouthAfrica TB and Aids Reduction (Zam-star) study, which investigated theprevalence of TB and sought ways tofight it.

Desmond Tutu TB Centre directorProfessor Nulda Beyers, with her col-league Dr Shahra Sattar, reportedback on the Zamstar research resultsto healthcare workers, school princi-pals and members of the communityat a recent meeting at TC NewmanClinic in Paarl.

The study looked at 24 communitiesin Zambia and 8 in the Western Cape, including Kayamandi and Mbekweni.

It showed that the incidence of TBwas four times as high in these West-ern Cape communities as in the Zam-bian communities.

“We are a wealthier country thanZambia and have lower HIV rates. YetTB is far worse here. We need to domore – each and every one of us,” saysBeyers.

She says research seems to showthat people aren’t going to the clinics

to access treatment. She urges peoplein the community to work together tobeat the dread disease.

Common symptoms of TB includecoughing for more than two weeks, night sweats and weight loss.

During the Zamstar research, chil-dren in Grades 1 to 3 at schools in Kay-amandi and Mbekweni were givenskin tests and monitored closely.

Results showed that one in everyfiveof thesechildrenhadalreadybeeninfected with TB.

During the Zamstar study, researchassistants such as Jongi Ndlebe fromKayamandi went door to door to talkto people about the symptoms of TB.

Ndlebe says it was worrying to seehow many people in Kayamandi hadTB. On the other hand, he adds, it wasvery rewarding to see people get themedication and treatment that couldsave their lives.

“TB treatment is free at clinics,” hepoints out. “People need to knowabout it and get help.”

These research assistants from Kayamandi helped out during the Zamstar study. Theyare (back row, from left) Fundiswa Tibisono, Zanelele Nazo and Vuyokazi Leonard. Front:Jongi Ndlebe, Fundiswa Makhomazi and Nomfundo Kabane. Photo: SUPPLIED

Wat jy moet weet’n TESTAMENT is uiters belangrik, want aljou bates – dit waarvoor jy lewenslank ge-werk het, jou gade, jou kinders en ander erf-gename, jou eksekuteur of trustee of voog,is almal by hierdie een dokument betrokke.
