Jackson says Seda decided to choose stu-dents from Makupula because of the school’swork ethic. “Academically, the school’s beendoing incredibly well recently,” says Jack-son, pointing out the school’s record matricpass last year.

“If we can make a difference for even fivegirls, it’s still important to us.”

The pupils express delight at being “ex-posed to the working environment”.

“We’ve acquired a lot of skills and knowl-edge fromwhatwe’vebeentaughtso far,”oneof the pupils, Andisiwe Fodo, says.

“For example, we had no idea what a datacapturer did, nor what it entailed.

“I’ve learned about prospective careers.I’ve also learned a lot about Seda and whatthey offer, their support centre’s values, and,as I said, the skills you can attain here.”

Olwethu Mto, another of the five pupilschosen, says: “They taught us how workersgo about their jobs. We job-shadowed a lot ofpositions, from having to spend a day withthe receptionist to being shown how datacapturers do their jobs.”

Mood food to beat the coldWHENthesunsetsandthewinterchillsets in, it can be tough to hold onto ahappy, positive spirit – but Peter Jor-daan, principal officer at Fedhealth, says many will be surprised to dis-cover how the food they choose to eatcan boost their mood and immunity.

“It is important to re-evaluate yourdiet when your mood and your im-mune system feel down. Small adjust-ments to your diet and eating habitswill do much to keep you happier andhealthier in these winter months.”

Cape Town–based nutritionistChantal Deacon Daniel recommendsbalancing blood sugar by eliminatingrefined carbohydrates, eating small, frequent meals, and avoiding preserv-atives and colourants. “Dark-greenleafy vegetables are rich in magnesi-um, an important mineral for moodsupport, and should be included inyour winter diet. Eat plenty of freshfruits and vegetables every day.”

Also try to eat cold-water fish suchas salmon, tuna and mackerel. Theyare high in omega-3 fatty acids, as arenuts and seeds (specifically walnutsand flax, chia and pumpkin seeds) andfree-range organic eggs. Omega-3 fattyacids are particularly important formood, and taking a daily supplementshould be considered.

Daniel also recommends raw cacao.Eating foods rich in nutrients that

supportyour immunesystemwillhelpgive rundown immune systems amuch-needed boost. “Vitamin C isgreat forimmunesupport, andisfoundin red and green peppers, parsley, gua-vas and citrus fruit as well as goji ber-ries and camu-camu berries. Theseberries are also referred to as super-foods as they are whole foods that arenot fractionalised with minerals andsupplements, and are easily absorbedby the body,” comments Daniel.

Zinc is another important mineralfor the immunesystem. It canbe foundin oysters, pumpkin seeds, oats, eggs, ginger, pecannuts, andBrazilnuts, thelatter also being rich in selenium, an-other important mineral for immunefunction. Fresh garlic also has strongimmune-supportive properties andcanhelpfight infectionscausedbybac-teria, fungi, and viruses.

Both experts recommend avoidingalcohol and stimulants such as coffeeand cigarettes as these tend to weakenthe immune system. Rather stick towater, herbal teas and hot water withlemon and honey.

A healthy, balanced diet, includingfood that’s as natural as possible – andshared with friends and family – willleaveyoufeelingcontentandcomforted.

How to write and edit an essayIF you are struggling to write an essay, oryou keep losing loads of marks because ofspelling and grammar mistakes and weakformulations, these tips will help you im-prove your essay-writing skills.

PlanAn essay should discuss one main theme,

but itcanalsohavesub-themes–whichmustcontribute to the main theme.

Whenyouplanbeforehandwhatyouwantto discuss in your essay by making a mindmap, you prevent yourself from wanderingoff from the topic.

Start at the beginningAfter you have planned your essay, you

should write your introduction first. Re-member that the introduction of an essayshould lead the reader into the essay and tellhim or her what it will be discussing.

This will help you to write your essay, since you can go back to the introductionto see what you have to discuss next.

Use a dictionaryWhen you are busy writing your essay,

you should always have a dictionary nextto you. Use it any time you find yourself un-sure of how to spell or use a word correctly,or any time you encounter a word you donot fully understand.

Wrap things upBeforeyouwrite the summary foryour es-

say, you should go back and read your intro-duction again, since a summary should con-nectwith the introductionandgive themain

results of your discussion.Put a name to itThe title of your essay should not be cho-

sen lightly, because it is the first thing thereader will see – and first impressions canlast a lifetime.

Your title should be short and snappy tocatch your reader’s eye, and should also lethim or her know what your essay’s maintheme is. You should therefore reread youressay before you decide on a title.

Give it another lookWhen you are finished with your essay,

youhavetorereaditbecauseyoumighthavemade writing or typing errors, such as spell-ing mistakes, omitted or repeated words, missing full stops at the end of a sentence, and so on.

Finish your essay earlyOften there are sentences in an essay that

are formulatedverypoorlyandthatarediffi-cult to understand. You know what youmeant to say inyourownessay, and sowhenyou read it you often won’t notice when itdoesn’t say what you actually meant to say.

If you finish your essay early you can putit aside for a while and forget about it. Thiswill help you to notice your mistakes andweak formulations better when you rereadyour essay for the last time.

Anothergood idea is toaska friend to readyouressayandseewhether theyunderstandwhat you are trying to say – and whetherthey notice any mistakes.
