Preparation is key toclearing any hurdleNEIL FORTUIN

A hike to the top of Table Mountain hashelped a group of Vision AfriKa Grade 10learners to see that careful preparation isthe key to achieving their goals.

The aim of the trip, which took place at theend of last month, was to have all of the stu-dents climb the iconic landmark within threehours. But because itwas ahot daywith themercu-

ryrising to28°Candsomeof the learnersbeingless fit than others, it soon became necessaryto split the group in two.The first group was led by the fastest and

mostexperiencedhikerandcopedwelldespitethe tough conditions, but members of the sec-ond group, which was allowed to take moreregular stops, visibly struggled. In fact, after two hours, some learners were

finding it so tough that a third team wasformed to ensure their safety and allow themto hike at their own pace.It took five hours for everyone to reach the

summit, but the feeling of accomplishmentthat camewith summitingwas elatingand thestunning views made it all worthwhile. One of the key lessons the students learned

from the experience was that preparation iskey to achieving one’s sometimes apparentlyimpossible dreams. For instance, although at the outset the

learners were all keen to scale the summit, about half of the group failed to think throughwhat was required and did not carry enoughwater to last them.Luckily, the team leaders had anticipated

the situation and brought more than enoughto get them through. For more information about the Vision 10s

World Design Capital recognises AjugaAjuga, an initiativelaunched in February bythe Cipla Foundationwhere fire-resistant struc-tures and creches are in-stalled in informal settle-ments to combat the shackfire crisis, has been select-ed as an official, recog-nised project for inclusionin the World Design Capi-tal 2014 Programme.Following on the World

Design Capital title award-ed to Cape Town last year, the Ajuga project has beenrecognised in the bridgingthe divide category, which acknowledgesprojects that use design to bridge the historicaldivide between communities.“Ajuga aims to build relationshipswith com-

munities and corporate South Africa. Weworkwith non-profit organisations and communityleaders in informal settlements to identify vul-nerable creches in need of being replaced. Weare exceptionally proud that this project is be-ing recognised for its innovative and sustaina-

ble design,” said PaulMiller, chief executiveat Cipla Medpro.Designed by Cipla

Foundation’s manag-ing trustee, David Gri-er, Ajuga is one of themost unique and effec-tive fire-resistant struc-tures available, as it ismade from patentedsteel and fire retardantpanels, which havebeen fire-tested to1 000°C.“The house is fitted

with standardwindowswith a fire-resistant door and services such aswater and electricity can be installed.“On average nine people die in shack fires

every month in the informal settlements ofCape Town. Cipla Foundation felt the need toget in involved with this serious crisis thatclaims so many lives,” said Grier. The World Design Capital 2014 Programme

offers a variety of opportunities and platformsfor the Ajuga initiative to feature in projects.

The Ajuga fire-resistant creche could help pre-vent deaths caused by fires in informal settle-ments. Here is a demonstration of how the hutreacts when set alight.

The final of the Kappa Cup lived

up to the expectations and excite-ment created all week.

Maties narrowly missed scoringin the seventh minute as a shot from25 m out beat the goalkeeper, but notthe woodwork. Idas Valley slowlybut surely came back into the gameand claimed better ball possession inthe first half.

This pressure led to the first goalwhen the Maties keeper could onlyparry a corner following which, Dus-tin van Kerwel of Idas Valley put theball into the back of the net. Idas Val-ley went into the break one goalahead.

Maties came out firing in the sec-ond half and were awarded a penaltyin the 60th minute when one of theIdas Valley defenders handled theball in the 18-yard area.

The Idas Valley keeper showed hismettle when he excellently saved

from the spot, not once, but twice, asthe referee rewarded a retake aftertheballmovedwhentheMatiesplay-er took the first penalty kick. The ex-citement levels grew after this asboth teams gave their all in the re-maining minutes.

Ultimately the Idas Valley defenceproved outstanding and this was thedeciding difference between the twoteams.
