Transforming the tourism industryTheCapeWinelands ischallengedwiththetask of developing the established localtourism industry with a view to transfor-mation.

At a recent event hosted by the Cape Wine-lands District Municipality (CWDM) the is-suesregardingtransformationinthe industryas well as seasonal unemployment were ad-dressed.“Through the creating and capacitating

new tourism business we aim to address thisneed and mandate of government to alleviatepoverty through local economic develop-ment,” said CWDM municipal spokesperson,Kim-Lynn Meyer.

The CWDM therefore embarked on a seriesof training projects to develop strugglingsmall tourism businesses that needed addi-tional skills to perform and compete in thiscompetitive market.Oneof the trainingprojectsCWDMinitiated

is culinary training which has been designedfor caterers, restaurants, home stays andB&Bowners, or unemployed students with an in-terest in the culinary arts in the Cape Wine-lands region. The aspects covered in the training include

effective time management, awareness of theindividual’s role in the workplace, telephoneetiquette and reception skills, customer careand communication.

It further covered kitchen and personal hy-giene, aswell asmenucompilation, affordablecooking, finishing touches and presentation, costing and pricing and catering for differentcultures, including Halaal, Kosher, vegetari-an and diabetic. Each student will have to cook a sample of

the light meal they will present to a prospec-tive client.“Tourism is regarded by many as a vehicle

for job creation,” said Meyer.“It is a process by which government and

the non-governmental sector partners worktogether to create better conditions for eco-nomic growth, poverty reduction and employ-ment creation.

“In support of this process, and tocreate a competitive and sustainabletourism industry, it is imperative tosupport tourism initiatives that are inline with national, provincial and re-gional growth targets.”A total of 14 people from the Stellen-

bosch municipal area completed thesix-week training programme suc-cessfully.They received their certificates at

an event in Pniel on 17 October.“The training has been done in all

5 B municipal areas now and the nextstep will be follow-up training as as-sistant chef for those who would liketo further their studies in this field.”

Role-players from theCWDM attended theprize-giving where theproud students receivedtheir culinary trainingcertificates.

Kayamandi ArtsFestival a successPULENG KONESHE

TheKayamandiArts andCultureFesti-val ended on a high note this weekend.

The last events for the festival were the5th Mr and Miss Kayamandi on Fridayevening, followed by the drama and poetrysession on Saturday at Kayamandi HighSchool. The festival was organized byLokxion Lifestyle in association with theStellenbosch Heritage Project.Judges from Gorden’s Bay, Dunoon and

Eaglevlei were tasked with deciding whowould hold the title of Mr and Miss Kaya-mandi 2013. Nerves and excitement filledthe room as the boys and girls strutted upand down the stage, donned in glamorousoutfits. The title of Miss Kayamandi wentto Lithakazi Royi and Mr Kayamandi toLuxolo Cakata. Unlike other beauty pag-eants, Miss Kayamandi is crowned with aisicholo (a traditionalhatwornbywomen),instead of a tiara. Mr Kayamandi receivedan intonga, a cane. These are symbols ofhonour in the community. The pageant organizer, Nomvuyekeso

Mtiya, says it was a bit challenging to hostthe event as they did not have a budget. However, she says she was encouraged bypeople who said they enjoyed the event.Poetry and drama sessions were held on

Saturday and were particularly impres-sive. The topics varied from rape, the con-flict between Christianity and traditionalbeliefs, and relationships.

Guests at the session were the vernacu-lar poet Snazo Peter from Philippi and theInk Prophets Poetry Society from the Uni-versity of the Western Cape. The event’sorganizer, Paul Khambule, says they didnot receive much financial support. “Mat-ies Sport supported our netball and soccertournament. The biggest challenge is thelack of resources. We were working witha zero budget. Thismakes it almost impos-sible to achieve the desired goals.”Khambule says the event is aimed at giv-

ing young people a platform to showcasetheir talent and share their knowledgewith each other. He says the festival is alsointended tounite youngpeople fromdiffer-ent backgrounds through storytelling, sport, music and dancing.Members of the communities came out

in large numbers on Saturday and Friday.About 300 tickets were sold on Friday.“Thefestivalhasbeentakingplaceannu-

ally since 2011,with four initial categories:Dance, Drama, Music, & Battle of DJs,”says Khambule.” The festival was usuallyhosted over a period of four days. “Earlierthis year the vision was revisited and wedecided to include Miss & Mr Kayamandiand sport.Eachcategoryhad its ownweek-end and a dedicated manager.”Khambule says that the event will take

a different form next year. “The plans for2014 are already in place. The festival willtransformintoa themed festival where theparticipants will prepare material accord-ing to a specific theme,” says Khambule.

Make a difference to achild’s educationTakeatripdownthetranquilDevonValleyRoad on the edge of Stellenbosch and, sur-rounded by farmland, you’ll find Grace-land, a vibrant preschool run by the Them-balitsha Foundation.

Graceland restores hope to the underprivi-leged children of the area by providing themwith access to early-years education in a safe, loving environment. Research has shown thatchildren who attend two years of preschoolhave a greater chance of completing their edu-cation successfully and Thembalitsha hasproof.

Bershrin van Niekerk, one of the first chil-dren to attend Graceland when it opened itsdoors 15 years ago, recently graduated fromhigh school.

“Graceland is where my love for learningwas created,” said Bershrin.

“Now I’m done with high school and I am

studying to be an IT technician at Cape TownUniversity. Thank you Graceland!’

Children who, like Bershrin, would not usu-ally have the chance to go to preschool, arenow able to make the most of their formativeyears and remain safe in the daytime toothanks to the dedicated team at Graceland.

And they have the successes of people likeBershrin and his peers to be inspired by.
