Former Matie fights off muggersA former Matie almost fell victimto one of the many Metrorail at-tacks.Last week Josh Prinsloo took a

Muldersvlei train to Stellenboschtrain station. He got out atDuToit station, but

got back on again whilst on thephone with a friend. When he got in, the train stood

still for about five to ten minutes. At this time two suspects got on-

to the train, and one suddenlypulled out a knife.“I saw the muggers coming in,

and I knewwhatwas about to hap-pen.“They stood around and proba-

bly formulated what they neededto do.“The one guy stood guard at the

door, whilst the other one came to-wards me with the knife.”On his Facebook page he wrote,

“I pretty much attacked him be-fore he could attack me or get awordoutofhismouth. Inabarrageof flimsy knife attacks, the mug-ger’s arms looked like dancingtwo-minute noodles cavortingthrough the air. I managed tododge and block his first attemptat stealing my belongings before Ipushed him into a stumble. Then,

the fool attacked again - this timewith more vigour! Arms up in theair, swinging wildly from side toside. Then it was like he gave upand I got my gap to run.”Prinsloo said everything hap-

pened in a split second. His handgot scratched in the incident butnothing serious. He alsomentions that there was

a security guard on the train, buthedidnotwearaMetrorail securi-ty uniform. And, he did not do anything, in-

stead saying, “Sorry I couldn’thelp you my man, I’m only oneguy!”Riana Scott, Metrorail commu-

nications officer said that this in-cident was not reported. She says that the guard was not

employed by Metrorail.“The guards stationed at Stel-

lenbosch Station over the week-end were contracted security.”“The non-responsiveness of the

guards posted at Stellenboschwillbe raised with their superiors interms of the security company’scontractual obligations. Guardsmust behave lawfully and respect-fully towards employees and cus-tomers of Metrorail and assistwhen required. Penalties for non-

performance can be imposed.”Scott continues furtherandsays

Keep kids safe andhappy this holidayAs families prepare for those long holidaydrives, Les Mc Master, chairman of the MotorIndustry Workshop Association (MIWA), ad-vises thatkeeping thekidssafeandentertainedis an important part of the trip.He says it is essential to ensure that car seats

are properly secured. Statistics show that upto70%ofcarseatsareincorrectlyinstalled.Par-entsmustalsoensurethat theseat is theage-ap-propriate size and kids who are big enough touse the normal seat belts are buckled in at alltimes.“Children, especially toddlers, get fidgety

DEADP BA ref: 16/3/1/1/B4/45/1093/14.DEADP 24g ref:14/2/1/2/B4/45/0049/14

Notice is given in terms of Regulation 54 of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)Regulations published in Government Notice R.543 in Government Gazette No 33306 of 02August 2010, under Section 24(5) of the National Environmental Management Act 1998 (ActNo 107 of 1998), as amended, we are required to notify all interested and affected parties of theBasicAssessment and 24g Environmental Impact Report to be submitted to the Department ofEnvironmentalAffairs and Development Planning (DEADP) (Provincial).

Project Activity: Boschendal Wine Estate has proposed the construction of a hydro-electricplant and expansion of an existing dam. The hydro-electric scheme involves the initialestablishment of a gauging weir (already constructed, thus requiring a Section 24gRectification Application), a slightly larger weir upstream of the gauging weir, a pipeline ofapproximately 450mm diameter over a distance of approximately 3 kilometres, and a hydro-electrical power generation unit located at the end of the pipeline on the southern bank, whichwill discharge into an existing farm dam known as “Normandi”. The plant will generate 750 KWof electricity during the rainy season which will feed into a nearby Eskom line. The De BordjeDam will be increased to hold approximately 300 000m3.

In accordance with the EIA regulations, EOH CES will conduct a basic assessment for thehydro-electric scheme and upgrading of De Bordje Dam and an environmental impact reportwill be compiled for the construction of a gauging weir on a non-perennial mountain stream.

You are invited to register as an interested and affected party.
