Sculptor Balan NambiarTHE GOLDEN RATIO

Numerical proportion considered to be anaesthetic ideal in classical design: Itrefers to the ratio of the base to the heightof a rectangle or to the division of a linesegment into two in such a way that theratio of the shorter part to the longer isequal to that of the longer to the whole. It works out to about 1:1.61803. This iscalled PHI (pronounced ‘fee’, and not tobe confused with Pi which is 3.142). Wemay say that this Golden Ratio is thefundamental building block of theuniverse. Plants, animals and evenhuman beings, all possess dimensionalproperties that adhere with uncannyexactitude to the ratio of 1:1.618.

For example, in humans, the ratio of theheight from head to floor to the heightfrom the belly button to the floor is1.618:1. The same ratio is seen in thedistance from the shoulder to finger tipto elbow to finger tip distance. Again thesame applies for the ratio of hip to floorto knee to floor distance!!!

THE FIBONACCI SEQUENCE

In mathematics, a sequence of numberswith surprisingly useful applications inbotany and other natural sciences:Beginning with two 1’s, each new termis generated as the sum of the previoustwo: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, the 13th-centurymathematician Leonardo of Pisa (c. 1170– after 1240), also known as Fibonacci, discovered the sequence but did notexplore its uses, which have turned outto be wide and various. For example, thenumber of petals in most types of flowersand numbers involved in branching andseed-formation patterns come from theFibonacci sequence. The ratio of any twosuccessive terms approaches the valueof the golden ratio (1:1.618) as the termsbecome large.

In art, man tries to imitate the beauty ofthe Creator’s hand. Hence, the use ofthe Golden Ratio and the FibonacciSequence bring the work of art as closeto the beauty of nature as possible.

Mr. Balan Nambiar is a Bangalore-basedsculptor/ artist with an international reach.Fourteen of his sculptures are in Delhi –including five at the National Gallery ofModern Art (NGMA), and another fivesculptures at the Max Mueller Bhavan. Theother four are at private premises. Thetallest of these sculptures, which is 3.3meters high, is at the NGMA.

Over the past two years, Mr. Nambiar hasbeen honoured with prestigiousmemberships / responsibilities incommittees at the Ministry of Culture ofthe Government of India, NGMA and theLalit Kala Academy in Delhi.

Mr. Nambiar’s solo exhibition of stainlesssteel sculptures at ART HERITAGE onTansen Marg in 2005 sparked a desire inhim to execute a unique monumentalsculpture in Delhi. The Indian OilCorporation’s 50th anniversary gave himthis golden opportunity for executing hislabour of love.

Mr. Nambiar is a firm believer thatstainless steel is an ideal medium forsculptures - large or small.

JSS Steelitalia Limited is a joint ventureof Inox Market Services s.r.l of Italy,Jindal Stainless Steelway and JensitaHoldings. Steelitalia have a state-of-the-art High Frequency Welding Mill suppliedby OTO Mills of Italy, one of the leadingtube mill manufacturers of the world.Steelitalia is a dedicated stainless steeltube manufacturer producing round, square and rectangular tubes.

With this mill, Steelitalia is able toconsistently produce perfectly roundedtubes and sharp edges in box sectionsat a very high rate of productivity. Whilea conventional tube producing mill havingTIG welding technology might produceat a rate of 2-3 metres/minute, this millhas a capacity to produce tubes at anaverage speed of 80 metres/minute whichcan go as high as 120 metres/minutegiving Steelitalia a production capacityof around 3500 MT/month. This is thehighest for any stainless steel tube andpipe producing mill in India.

This mill has the ability to run non-stopeven during change of coils. This isachieved by the Floop section whichaccumulates around 500 metres of slitsgiving enough time to continuously feedthe mill by welding the leading edge of anew coil to the tail end of the coil underprocess in the tube mill at very highspeeds.

Achieving such high production rate iscomplemented by on-line eddy current

testing facility so that there is nocompromise on the quality of tubes beingproduced. The cut-off section issynchronized in such a way that even atspeeds as high as 120 metres/minutethe cut off section can precisely cut thetubes in 5 to 8 metre lengths as per therequirement of the customer. Onlinepackaging and strapping system givesready to ship bundles of tubes.

Founded in 1993, M/s Autonix AutoIndustries Pvt. Ltd is a pioneer andleading player in the manufacture ofstainless steel and special metals-basedcomponents which have extensiveapplication in cars and motorcycles.

Based in Noida near Delhi, Autonixproduces more than 10 million stainlesssteel components for automotive halogenlamps every month. Many of thesecomponents are wafer thin, about 0.2 mmonly.

Autonix also produce rims and fendersfor motorbikes. These are in stainlesssteel, mild steel with Cr/Ni plating orpowder coated. While production volumein mild steel rims is about 8,000 permonth (covering all major domesticmotorbike brands), their stainless steelrim production is about 25,000 perannum, a bulk of which is exported tomajor developed European unioncountries.

The domestic market off-take is onlyabout 5-6,000 stainless steel rims perannum, mainly for the replacementmarket. They are still awaiting anopening from some original equipmentmanufacturer (OEM) of motorbikes toaccept stainless steel rims.

Being corrosion resistant, stainless steelrims would be ideal for coastal cities likeMumbai, Goa, Chennai, Trivandrum,Kolkata etc. In corrosion resistancetests, plated rims are expected towithstand 50 hours of Salt Spray Test.Stainless steel rims have withstood 192hours of this test, showing that they canresist corrosion and retain aestheticlooks over a much longer service life.

Strength-wise stainless steel rims arealso much more dent resistant comparedto mild steel. In load tests, stainlessrims show a significantly lower deflectionthan mild steel rims which are made of15-20% thicker sheets. Given the longstretches of pot-holed roads in all citiesand towns of India, stainless steel rimsare the ones that will give you long life. All these benefits of stainless steel rimsare available at an additional cost of onlyabout Rs. 50 per rim, or only Rs. 100 fora bike.

In addition, avoidance of electroplatingor powder coating is a veryenvironmentally friendly act. Let us hopethat motorbike companies would soonwake up to this fact and provide a greenoption to their customers. Such a switchby motorbike manufacturers would bereflective of their Corporate SocialResponsibility in addition to providinglong lasting wheels at a marginalincrease in cost.

Stainless Auto Components from Autonix

India produces about 10 million motorbikesper annum. Even a small percentage of thismarket would give a significant boost tostainless steel volumes.

Q1--2010 World Stainless Production Returns to Historical LevelsJust under 7.5 mmt of stainless steel was produced during the first quarter of 2010, almost the highest evervolume for the first three months of a year. All areas of the world contributed to the increase in production.

1st Quarter 2010 compared to 4th and 1st Quarters of 2009Stainless crude steel production (in ‘000 metric tons)

While impressive, the year-on-yearcomparison should be reviewed in thelight of the following points:

1. Production in the first quarter of 2009was almost the lowest in a decade dueto the effects of the global recessionwhich was followed by heavy de-stocking.

2. The global economy began to recoverin the second half of 2009 and

manufacturing activity in stainless-usingindustries, such as the automotive sector,is increasing. 3. After a very strong de-stocking in 2009, better market conditionsmay encourage many fabricators andstainless steel stockholders to replenishtheir stocks.

Sustainable Stainless Steel Transit Station Designby Catherine Houska

Reprint available from ISSDA

Abstract:

Attractive, sustainable transitbuildings are an important part of anefficient modern infrastructure. Inaddition to being attractive, properlyspecified stainless steels are durable, require minimal maintenance andprovide long-term safety, security andtraffic control. These factors and its

inherent sustainability have madestainless steel an important designmaterial for new transit buildingsaround the world. This review ofstainless steel applications, benefitsand specification will providedesigners with the confidence to useit into designs capable of providing50 or more years of service.

The Indian economy is growing atabout 8%+ and there is a lot ofemphasis on improving infrastructureat a fast pace. A few large airportshave come up, many more have beenrevamped. Work on 12 new airportsis to start soon (many more are lined-up); a large number of railwaystations being renovated and a half-dozen cities are on the way to gettingtheir own metro transit systems. Manymodern bus stations and thousandsof bus shelters in stainless steel arealso coming up.

Given these circumstances, thisexcellent publication would be a veryuseful tool for urban planners, designers, architects and siteengineers and builders constructattractive, long-lasting, cost-effectiveand environmentally friendly designsusing stainless steel for transitbuildings.

Apart from handrails, column claddingand counter tops, there are many newapplications like roofing, curtain wallsetc., which will add many decades oflife to these structures.

1. Magnetic attraction: Type 430 is a Ferriticstainless steel having only 16-18% ChromiumThis is attracted by magnets. Chromiumelectroplated steel is also attracted bymagnets and there is a chance that these twocan be easily mixed up.

2. Copper Sulphate Test: First use emerypaper on the surfaces No. 120 (rough) andthen 320 (fine) to clean the surface of anyimpurities. Take 25 ml of clean water and addhalf a spoon of Copper Sulphate crystals to itand stir well.

Mix this copper sulphate solution very veryslowly to 25 ml of concentrated sulphuric acid(specific gravity of 1.84) in a glass beaker.Stir well. We now have ‘acidified coppersulphate solution’.

Put one drop of this acidified copper sulphatesolution on the emery papered surfaces of SS430 and the chrome plated

Immediately, you will notice that theelectroplated surface will show apinkish red colour on the drop. SS 430will show no change in colour.

Reason: SS 430 presents a passive(i.e. non reactive) layer to the acidifiedcopper sulphate and hence no reaction. The iron below the chromium platingwill react with acidified copper sulphatesolution producing a pinkish red colour.

Test Solution (1) Chrome plated Stapler and (2)Knife blade. (3) SS 430 sample.

(2)

All these grades are used in many differentapplications. But it is difficult to differentiatebetween the above grades as they all lookalike. Only 430 is attracted by magnets butnot the others. Below we are suggesting asimple chemical test to differentiate and arriveat a qualitative estimate to which grade a givensample belongs.

Ferric Chloride solution etches these gradesdifferently and is especially helpful in gettingan idea of the level of nickel in the low-nickelstainless steels.

Procedure: Take 50 ml of clean water andadd about two-thirds of a tea spoon (about10gms) of laboratory grade ferric chloride andcompletely mix it in the water. Use a glassrod to put a drop of ferric chloride solution ona pre-cleaned surface of the stainless steelsample. Let it stay on for 2-3 minutes. Thenwash away the ferric chloride droplet underrunning water. Do not wipe. The coloursobserved on etched surfaces of different gradesare given in the images here.

It will be observed that SS 304 and SS 430leave whitish patches. Low-nickel stainlesssteels leave a blackish-brown patch, theintensity of the colour increases with loweringof nickel content.

CAUTION: While mixing acid andwater (in this case copper sulphatesolution) DO NOT ever add the solutionto the acid. IF YOU DO, there will beviolent boiling and can cause anaccident. You should slowly add acidto the solution.

Using a kit provided by M/s MetAssociates of Navsari, Gujarat, SS 316can be differentiated from SS 304.

Magnetic Test: Both these grades arenon-ferromagnetic and will not getattracted to magnets.

Chemical Test: Clean the metalsurfaces under test by an emery paperto make free from any grease or dust.Place a drop of Electrolytic solutionprovided by Met Associates for detectingthe presence of Molybdenum in StainlessSteel on to the metal surfaces under test.Switch on the power unit so that greenLED will glow. Type 304 in Marine AtmosphereLeft Pickled Finish, Right Mirror Polished

Why surface finish is importantDirectional ‘dull’ polished finishes areoften specified for external architecturalapplications but this type of surfacefinish can exhibit a wide range of surfaceroughness dependent upon the type ofbelt and polishing grit that has been used.Coarsed polish finishes, with transverseRa values > 1 micron, will exhibit deepgrooves where chloride ions canaccumulate and destroy the passive film, thereby initiating corrosion attack. Incontrast, fine polished finishes with Ravalues < 0.5 micron will generally exhibitclean cut surfaces, with few sites wherechloride ions can accumulate. If adirectional polished finish is required, ina coastal/marine situation, it is importantthat the specification should include a‘maximum’ transverse surface roughnessrequirement of 0.5 microns Ra (e.g. 2ksurface finish in EN 10088-2). A simpledescription such as satin polish wouldbe insufficient to guarantee a smoothpolished finish with good corrosionresistance.

Other Considerations:

a) OrientationA secondary effect in determining thecorrosion resistance is the orientation ofthe polished surface. With a verticaldirection of polish the opportunity forentrapment of harmful species isminimized and the natural washing effectis maximized. However, this may notalways be feasible from an aestheticpoint of view.

b) Large Scale EffectsThe above principles also operate on amuch larger scale. The design of externalarchitectural applications should avoidintroducing features such as ledges, horizontal grooves and perforations. Allof these features will increase theeffective surface area that is available forharmful species to accumulate and, consequently, the natural washing–off byrainwater will be minimized.

c) Surface ReflexivityIn terms of reflectivity, a ‘smooth’polished finish will produce a morereflective surface and this could givesignificant and unacceptable dazzle, inbright sunlight, if large flat areas are partof the architectural design. For this typeof situation, it may be more appropriateto specify a ‘matt’ non directionalsurface, such as a glass bead blastedfinish. However, as with dull polishing, itis important that a ‘fine’ glass beadoption should be selected, to minimizethe surface roughness and give the bestpossible corrosion resistance.

SUMMARY

The present day designer needs to beaware of the importance of surface finishin influencing the corrosion resistance ofstainless steel and remove any adversefeatures from the design.

Surface finish lines should be vertical
