Pastor’s Letter January 13/14

Dear Parish Family,

When Saint Pope John Paul II visited New York for the first time in 1979, he did many of the things you might expect. He visited St. Patrick’s Cathedral. He celebrated Mass in Yankee Stadium for a packed crowd of Catholics. But he also did something new and unexpected. He

invited young people to a special prayer service at Madison Square Garden. I remember traveling into NYC with a group of young people from St. Mark’s in Shoreham. We waited a long time for the Pope’s arrival and when he finally rode the pope mobile into the arena, he was greeted with a very popular song at the time — the theme from Rocky! The young energetic pontiff loved it! And the young people were so pleased to see a fun and playful side of their spiritual leader!

In this week’s gospel we see a playful and poignant side to Jesus as he calls the first disciples. After meeting the Lord, Andrew goes off to get his brother Simon and brings him back to see Jesus.

The first moment Jesus looks at Simon he gives him a new name — Cephas (literally the head) which can also be translated Peter, or Rocky! The place where this happened is on the shore of the Sea of Galilee and is on the cover of our bulletin this week. Just behind the spot where that picture was taken is a church called “The Church of the Primacy of Peter.” Jesus called Simon the Rock and since then Christianity has remembered him as the first among the disciples.

But first did not mean best, or most flawless, or most talented, or anything else like that. In fact Peter the rock is almost painfully human, capable of misunderstanding Jesus frequently, and even capable of betrayal. But he could also stand again on the same shore with Jesus after the resurrection and say to him: “Lord you know everything, you know well that I love you!”

And so that is what makes Peter the first. Not flawless strength but simple humanity and the ability to love and be loved by God. And that is why we, too, can take our place among the disciples. We are called. And maybe we can hear the Lord, in his own playful way, say to each of us: “Hey Rocky!” Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. Michael A. Vetrano, Pastor

Winter is Here! It’s Cold! The St. Bernard League is Here to Help Year round residents know what a beautiful time each season in the East End can be, but for many senior citizens the cold of winter and storms brought by spring and summer can be frightening and isolating. For some Parishioners the isolation may not be from weather related issues, but from the reality of family living and working far away. You can help! We hope that you and your family will consider signing up to ‘adopt’ a member of our parish community, and partner with them through each season, or when the ‘red flags’ go up. You would be responsible to reach out to your assigned neighbor and be a lifeline for them during the long days of winter, or the heat of the summer sunshine. There is no deadline or cutoff period to join this Ministry. You can call the Office of Parish Social Ministry at any time to either volunteer your time or to be added to the list. ***************************************************** __I/we could use help in any season. Walking with Purpose: A Woman’s bible Study Group meets on Thursday evenings at 6:30 PM in the Chapel Room of the Rectory.

So much of a woman’s time is spent giving to others, if you do not take the time to replenish and refresh your soul it won’t be long before you are running on empty.

Plan on joining us in late January when we begin a six week journey called Living in the Father’s Love.

This is a great introduction to the program and a chance to fill your spiritual tank as well as make new friends. For more information please contact Jeannine Rose 631 283-0097 ext. 317.

Reflections On the Gospel

January 14, 2018

How hard it is for many, if not all, of us to listen, especially to God. Yet, Eli’s advice to Samuel in

Sunday’s first reading is really advice for everyone. What may make it even more remarkable is how

readily Samuel and the disciples in the Gospel respond. Initially, Samuel’s prompt response is to Eli,

but only because he wasn’t yet familiar with God. We claim to know God and still we struggle to

recognize God’s voice, perhaps because we are too busy talking to hear. Chances are we are all

seeking something, but we miss Jesus asking us what we are looking for. We miss the opportunity to

tell him and receive his reply. Let’s make an effort to quiet our minds and voices so we can listen,

truly listen, and learn what God has ready for us.

Eucharistic Adoration

Become an Anchor of Prayer for Family Life

The Catechism quotes Saint John Paul II: “The Church and the world have a great need for Eucharistic worship. Jesus awaits us in this sacrament of love. Let us not refuse the time to go to meet him in adoration, in contemplation full of faith, and open to making amends for the serious offenses and crimes of the world. Let our adoration never cease. Our parish will have an hour of Eucharistic Adoration following the noon mass on Fridays. We would like to dedicate this hour as a time of contemplation and reflection to pray especially for our families. For strength in family life, for the return of family members to the church, for healing and reconciliation within families that are hurting.
