From the Schumaker’s Bench
I would like to say THANK YOU to everyone who has been graciously following the social distancing guidelines while at mass on the weekends as well as during the week. Most are wearing masks like the Bishop and the Health Department have asked, and I am truly grateful for this. One of the reasons I am adamant that we follow these guidelines, especially with the masks, is because the majority of our parishioners are in at risk categories either because of age or because of health. I would like them to all start feeling comfortable coming to mass, knowing that everyone is going to be doing their part to make it a safe environment for us all to
praise and give thanks to the Lord. If we do not follow these guidelines, it will just prolong the amount of time that we are in this mess. I know that of those who are choosing not to wear a mask, there are various reasons. I would ask that at mass, if you are not able to wear a mask because of health reasons, please make sure to distance yourself from all others. If you are choosing not to wear a mask for other reasons, be it political or anything unrelated to your health, then I ask that you prayerfully remember that the Church is not a place to make a statement. Rather, it is a place to enter into Communion with God. I ask that you remember those who are seriously at risk, and please do your part to ease their suffering, even if it means taking on a little bit of uncomfortableness and suffering for yourself. To do so is to follow the example of our Lord who suffered the horrors of scourging and crucifixion in order to allow us the possibility of being saved and joining God for eternal life.
In other states, the social distancing guidelines are much more strict. Registration is mandatory, attendance lists are sent to the local government, etc. We are asking that we all wear face masks, use hand sanitizer, maintain 6ft of separation from other households, and that a few people volunteer after every mass to help clean and sanitize.
I would especially ask that we all continue to hold each other up in prayer this week, especially those who work in the workplaces that are attached most directly to the recent surge in positive cases here in Oceana County.
That said, I hope and pray that we all have a safe and enjoyable 4th of July. Say a prayer for those who have sacrificed greatly for our country.

Episode 8: Humanity’s Only Boast
Despite being contaminated with original sin and frequently sinning, the human race
can boast of many incredible feats. We’ve harnessed the power of electrons to create
electricity. We’ve made great progress toward eliminating world hunger and deadly
illnesses. We’ve even left the earth and been to the moon. Many wonderful people have
helped to make the world a better place. But the life of one person has been more remarkable than any
other. That is Mary.
99.9% of devotions I’ve come across are considered optional methods for supporting our spiritual lives.
A wonderful thing about our Catholic faith is that there are a plentitude of different devotions and
saints to learn from and try incorporating into our lives. Specific saints will attract some people, and not
others, and that is fine. But Mary is the only saint that we need to get to know. Unless we really know
Mary in our prayer, our relationship with God will be seriously limited.
By knowing Mary, I don’t mean knowing of her. Many people know of God but they don’t know God.
Mary is not only a powerful intercessor, but a perfect model of discipleship. She said yes to God in less
than ideal circumstances and never ceased to follow Him, even when she didn’t understand the grand
plan.
Along with Jesus, she is our mother as well! Without Mary being a part of our prayer life, it will be
seriously compromised because of how close her relationship is with her son. The life of Mary is
incredible and the more we learn about her, the more we’ll appreciate the one who orchestrated it.
There are a plentitude of different Marian titles, devotions, images, and apparitions to help us. Reach
out to her next time you need help! Just like at Cana, Jesus will listen to his mother.
God Bless,
Jacob ……….

REMEMBER IN PRAYER
2020-2021 YEAR
We are in the beginning stages of planning
Faith Formation programs for 2020/21.
WE NEED CATECHISTS!
Please pray and ask the Lord if He is calling YOU to be
a part of our Faith Formation programming.
If you don’t feel teaching is your gift, please consider
other ways to help. We always need:
aides, including in the Faith Formation office,
people to make phone calls,
provide hospitality (beverages and snacks at meetings),
music leaders, prayer leaders,
small group facilitators for teens and adults,
and various other volunteer positions.
Whatever time you are willing to give, we will gladly accept. Please contact Linda Foster to volunteer.
