For Sameway, this is the last issue of the year. With a thankful heart I wish all readers a Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year.

As in previous years we used to publish a review on the major events happened in Australia, China and around the world. The editorial team was not that uplifted when we were picking the hot issues of the year. I was thinking hard on any issue that could turn us around.

Then a reflection came upon me to tell that the mere act of publishing this issue of Sameway was already heartening enough. Our newly appointed marketing director Gary with his weighty commercial experience pointed out that most Chinese publication on the market would find it very hard to survive, apart from a few legacy titles and those of real estates nature. Sameway is still around not because of any profitability but our impact on people s life through our information and care on our community which keep us in this serving business.

If the primary purpose of a business is to maximise profit, then any business in deficit should not be continued. So over the past ten years we have been thinking hard on this fundamental question of what elements could sustain a publication in serving the community.

Some people might think that the religion or passion of the publisher could do the job. This is true for some publications simply exist under the banner of rel igion or idealism. But these publications of a narrow scope, with confined financial supporters, could hardly get widely accepted by the community apart from the minority who share the same religion or idealism.

Some people might think that high quality publications could triumph in the advertisement market; I do not see this as the norm depending on the market movement and external environmental factors. It is obvious that in the mainstream society the publishing industry is being taken over by the electronic media.

Hence I would not say we are surviving because of our commercial experience or sales techniques. I can only say with faith that it is because of our God who has started off this mission through us is still with it to see us through. I thank God for what Sameway has accomplished to date, and for the support from all of the readers, sponsors, co-workers, friends and my family members. Thank you for having us in walking along in the community.
