If you are a true Catholic who wants to experience the fullness of your faith, then I

have a suggestion of something you could do this coming week, which I find is

one of the hardest weeks of the year to be Catholic? I say this because we still

have one more week left of the Christmas Season. It can be difficult to maintain

the spirit of this season when it seems everyone else has moved on, and

everyone’s life gets back to its normal routine. My suggestion is to spend some

time each day this week with reading and praying the First Letter of Saint John. It

is the first reading of the weekday Masses this week, so not only is it a way to

connect to the liturgy for most who are unable to come to Mass during the week,

but it offers some of the core themes of Christmas. You will notice references to

light (especially in contrast to darkness), spirit, truth, and love. The first days of the

new year is often a time for resolutions, almost a secular version of Lent when

people are trying to develop new disciplines and positive habits. But the

continuation of the Christmas Season for Catholics can be a time for a deeper

immersion into the mystery of God becoming human and what he is doing or

wants to do in the specific details of our lives. As we celebrate the Epiphany

today and recall the star leading the Magi to Jesus, let us pay attention to the

Holy Spirit, especially as he speaks to us in the scriptures, and how he wants to

lead us so that the direction of our lives is moving towards Jesus.

Si usted es un verdadero católico que quiere experimentar la plenitud de su fe,

entonces tengo un consejo de algo que podría hacer la próxima semana, que

creo que es una de las semanas más difíciles del año para ser católico. Digo esto

porque todavía nos queda una semana más de la temporada navideña. Puede

ser difícil mantener el espíritu de esta temporada cuando parece que todos los

demás han avanzado y la vida de todos vuelve a su rutina normal. Mi consejo es

pasar un tiempo cada día esta semana leyendo y orando la Primera Carta de

San Juan. Es la primera lectura de las Misas entre semana de esta semana, por lo

que no solo es una forma de conectarse con la liturgia para la mayoría de los

que no pueden asistir a Misa durante la semana, sino que ofrece algunos de los

temas centrales de la Navidad. Notarás referencias a la luz (especialmente en

año nuevo son a muchas veces un momento para las resoluciones, casi una

UNITING IN HEART UPDATE

As you may have seen in the Dec. 15 edition of The Catholic Moment a mention

that the next phase of implementing the Uniting in Heart 2030 Pastoral Plan is to

form Parish Transition Teams. These are individuals with experience and charisms

that can help gather data to get a more complete overview of each parish.

Leaders from the diocesan level will also be active team members. Data to be

collected include information related to facilities, stewardship, vocation, finances,

administration, technology, human resources, inventories of sacred goods, and

evangelization efforts. A pilot exercise is currently underway with the three parishes

in Muncie that will be part of a pastorate in that community. More info at www.dol

UNITING IN HEART ACTUALIZACIÓN

NATIONAL MIGRATION WEEK

As the Magi traveled through foreign lands, today’s celebration of the Epiphany

marks this week, Jan. 5-11 as National Migration week. We pray and advocate for

migrants and refugees so as to be welcoming to all our brothers and sisters, stand-

ing in solidarity with and caring for those who are marginalized. Pope Francis has

referred to as “a globalization of indifference,” which has led to many to ignore

the cries of the poor and remain indifferent to those struggling to find a better life.

He calls us to be an active Church in support of all God’s children. (Evangelii

Gaundium, 24).
