From Father Mike
As we celebrate the 75th anniversary of our diocese, I recently saw a copy of a
book of the history of the Diocese of Fort Wayne published in 1907. In that year, St.
Anne in Monterey had 68 families and 412 persons, St. Ann in Kewanna had 37
families and 300 persons, and St. Joseph in Rochester had 6 families and 25
persons. St. Joseph was still so small that there was only a monthly Mass offered on
a weekday by a priest from Monterey. Currently there are 58 families and 140
persons at Monterey, 18 families and 42 persons at Kewanna, and 204 families
and 467 persons at Rochester. It is interesting to note the decrease in family size in
the past 110 years, from 6.1 to 2.4 persons per family in Monterey, 8.1 to 2.3 in
Kewanna, and 4.1 to 2.3 in Rochester. This reflects a gradual change in which the
household units in our parishes have moved from being predominately younger
families with many children to a majority being older couples whose children
have grown up and moved away. This demographic shift is part of why the
Uniting in Heart Pastoral Plan is helping us find better ways to support all of our
current families, especially those raising our next generation of Catholics, and to
reach out and engage those in our wider community. The latter group is
important to include because not only all persons deserve to know Jesus and the
power of his resurrection, but it is the vision throughout the scriptures that all
persons be gathered into God’s Kingdom. As Isaiah states in today’s first reading,
“They shall bring all your brothers and sisters from all the nations…to Jerusalem, my
holy mountain, says the LORD.”
