I remember driving home on Christmas Day early in my priesthood in the 1990’s
and stopping at a gas station to fill up my tank which was almost empty. This was
before the days you could pay for gas at the pump with your credit card, so I
walked into the store to pay for my gas. Trying to express some compassionate
sensitivity, I mentioned to the woman clerk that it be must tough to have work on
Christmas. She shot back that if no one bought gas on Christmas day, then the
store would not have to stay open, and the company could then allow their
employees to enjoy Christmas at home with their families. It was a stark reminder
that Christmas is a celebration of Jesus who fulfills “what the Lord had said
through the prophet: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they
shall name him Emmanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’” (Matthew 1:22-23)
Emmanuel includes our experience of “being with” those God has put into our
lives that make real God’s presence in our midst. The joy of Christmas is that we
are not alone in this world. Jesus is the sign, as promised in today’s first reading of
Isaiah, that God has given us that he is truly with us. This presence continues in
those who are physically present in our lives and carry the presence of Christ in
their persons. This also presses us to committing ourselves to be that presence to
others and allowing them the opportunity to be with those who matter in their
lives, including those who could use a break from working to be with their family.
May our patron, St. Joseph, help us to see clearly that God is ever with us through
his son Jesus, Emmanuel, the God who is with us.

Recuerdo manejando a casa el día de la Navidad temprano en mi sacerdocio
en la década de 1990 y parando en una estación de gasolina para llenar mi
tanque que estaba casi vacío. Esto fue antes de los días en que podía pagar la
gasolina en la bomba con su tarjeta de crédito, así que entré en la tienda para
pagar mi gasolina. Tratando de expresar una sensibilidad compasiva, le
mencioné a la empleada que sería difícil tener trabajo en Navidad. Ella

es la señal, como se prometió en la primera lectura de hoy de Isaías, de que Dios

presencia de Cristo en sus personas. Esto también nos presiona a

into the parish office phone for any parish cancellations. Also, if in your judgment
the conditions at any time would put your safety or health at risk, you are not
obligated to attend Mass.

CHRISTMAS FOOD BASKETS
In addition to all the donated food items, we can now report that almost $2000
was collected to purchase 175 hams. While some families declined the hams, the
total effort helped almost 200 families in Fulton County to have a Merry Christmas.
