The Uniting in Heart 2030 Pastoral Plan is at its core a revitalization of our primary

mission as Catholics to evangelize. That word is one we don't use much but best

describes what we ultimately are trying to accomplish. Pope Paul VI best

summarized what evangelization is in his encyclical Evangelii Nuntiandi (On

Evangelization in the Modern World, 1975), describing it as “a means to bring the

Good News of Jesus into every human situation and seeking to convert individuals

and society by the divine power of the Gospel itself." What is helpful to remember

is that Jesus is both the message and the messenger, so whatever discomfort we

have in sharing him with others is overshadowed by the reality that Christ is really

the one who do the work of evangelizing others. So we don't have to depend on

our own clever presentation or persuasive words, merely on the Lord himself and

the openness of the person to receiving the proclamation of salvation in Jesus

Christ. Evangelization is as a three-step process of 1) Discovering Jesus through a

personal encounter with him; 2) Following Jesus and becoming his disciple; and 3)

Proclaiming the Good News as to be a witness of Jesus. We see a good example

of this in today’s gospel, where the convicted thief on the cross next to Christ

during his crucifixion has a personal encounter with Jesus, submits himself to the

Lord, and then proclaims him as his savior who gives access to the kingdom of

paradise. On this Feast of Christ, the King of the Universe, may we trust in the

power of our Lord and the throne of his cross to make effective any attempt we

make to evangelize in sharing the Good News of his salvation to others.

El Plan Pastoral Uniting in Heart 2030 es, en esencia, una revitalización de nuestra

misión principal como católicos para evangelizar. Esa palabra es una que no

usamos mucho, pero describe mejor lo que finalmente estamos tratando de

lograr. El Papa Pablo VI resumió mejor qué es la evangelización en su encíclica

Evangelii Nuntiandi (Acerca de la Evangelización en el Mundo Moderno, 1975),

describiéndola como “significa traer la Buena Nueva de Jesús a cada situación

humana y buscar convertir a los individuos y a la sociedad gracias al poder

divino del Evangelio mismo.” Lo que es útil recordar es que Jesús es tanto el

mensaje como el mensajero, por lo que cualquier incomodidad que tengamos al

compartirlo con los demás queda ensombrecida por la realidad de que Cristo es

ejemplo de esto en el evangelio de hoy, donde el ladrón convicto en la cruz

somete al Señor y luego lo proclama como su salvador que da acceso al reino

del paraíso. En esta Fiesta de Cristo, el Rey del Universo, podemos confiar en el

poder de nuestro Señor y el trono de su cruz para hacer efectivo cualquier

intento que hagamos de evangelizar al compartir las Buenas Nuevas de su

salvación a otros.

YOUTH SERVICE PROJECT

Thanks to all who supported our youth serving at Pizza Hut last week to earn tips

and others who contributed to their purchase of Christmas gifts for patients of

area nursing homes. Over $850 has been raised for this community outreach.

CHRISTMAS FOOD DRIVE

St. Joseph, Rochester and St. Ann, Kewanna are once again working with United

Ministries to collect food for their annual Christmas Food Drive. Promise Coupons

will be distributed this weekend to remind you to bring $5.00 worth of any non-

perishable food item to church the weekend of December 8-9. Foods that are

ready-made or only need to add water are preferred since many families have no

cooking equipment or only a hotplate. Please do not include toothpaste, soaps,

and toothbrushes, and note that donated items past their expiration date will be

discarded. You can also make a monetary donation, which will be used to

purchase fresh hams and other meats for the families. Donations of brand new

toys for babies and children to 12 years old are also welcome.

COLECCIÓN DE ALIMENTOS PARA NAVIDAD
