Today’s gospel begins, “John the Baptist appeared, preaching in the desert of

Judea and saying, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!’” Later John

says to the Pharisees and others who probably thought they were okay with God,

“I am baptizing you with water, for repentance, but the one who is coming after

me is mightier than I….He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” This call to

conversion is an ongoing part of our maturing as disciples of Jesus. The U.S.

bishops remind us of this in their pastoral letter Go and Make Disciples: “This is

crucial: we must be converted—and we must continue to be converted! We must

let the Holy Spirit change our lives!” Conversion is fundamental to our ability to

evangelize: “We can only share what we have received; we can hold on to our

faith only if it continues to grow.” Advent invites us to growth, renewal, and an

even deeper union with Christ. This week we encounter Mary quite a bit, as Our

Lady of the Immaculate Conception (Dec. 9), Our Lady of Guadalupe (Dec. 12),

and in the Las Posadas (Dec. 14). Both her initial “yes” and ongoing appearances

to help fellow disciples to give their hearts over completely to the Lord makes her

the mother of those who seek conversion and the Great Evangelizer who

proclaims the salvation her Son has won for us. May her prayers and

encouragement help us overcome any resistance we have to conversion and

give us the conviction and enthusiasm to share our faith with others.

El evangelio de hoy empieza, “En aquel tiempo, comenzó Juan el Bautista a

predicar en el desierto de Judea, diciendo: ‘Arrepiéntanse, porque ya está cerca

el Reino de los cielos’.” Luego Juan dice a los Fariseos y otros los que

probablemente estaba pensando que estaba bien con Dios, “Yo los bautizo con

agua, en señal de que ustedes se han convertido; pero el que viene después de

mí, es más fuerte que yo… Él los bautizará en el Espíritu Santo y su fuego.” Esta

llamada a la conversión en una parte constante de nuestra maduración como

discípulos de Jesús Los obispos de EE. UU. nos recuerdan esto en su carta pastoral

Vayan y Hagan Discípulos: “Esto es sumamente importante: ¡Tenemos que

convertirnos y tenemos que continuar convirtiéndonos! ¡Debemos dejar que el

Espíritu Santo cambie nuestras vidas!” La conversión es fundamental para nuestra

capacidad de evangelizar: “Solamente podemos compartir lo que hemos

recibido y sólo podemos conservar nuestra fe si ésta continúa creciendo.” El

Adviento nos invita al crecimiento, la renovación, y una unión aún más profunda

con Cristo. Esta semana nos encontramos con María bastante, como Nuestra

Señora de la Inmaculada Concepción (9 de diciembre), Nuestra Señora de

Guadalupe (12 de diciembre) y en Las Posadas (14 de diciembre). Tanto su "sí"

inicial como sus apariciones continuas para ayudar a sus compañeros discípulos

a entregar sus corazones por completo al Señor la convierten en la madre de

quienes buscan la conversión y en la Gran Evangelizadora que proclama la

salvación que su Hijo nos ha ganado. Que sus oraciones y ánimo nos ayuden a

superar cualquier resistencia que tengamos a la conversión y nos den la

convicción y el entusiasmo de compartir nuestra fe con los demás.

CHRISTMAS FOOD DRIVE

St. Joseph, Rochester and St. Ann, Kewanna will accept food for the United

Ministries Christmas Food Drive up until this Thursday. Monetary donations also

welcome until then at the Parish Office in Rochester. Volunteers to drive the food

to the 4H Fairgrounds are needed this Thursday at 10:30am.
