corrientesPoco más de 1000 km separan a Buenos Aires de Corrientes, capital de la provincia homónima, sinónimo de carnaval, de chamamé, de chipá calentito, mate y naranjas, de pesca del dorado, y por supuesto, de río. Por eso, elegimos recorrerla por la Ruta Nacional 12 a través de su cos-tado Oeste, en el corredor del an-cho río Paraná y cada una de sus más bellas costaneras: Paso de la Patria, Corrientes, Bella Vista y Goya.

CORRIENTESIt is just over 1000 km from Buenos Aires to Corrientes, the capital of the province of the same name, sy-nonymous with mardi-gras, chamamé music, warm chipá, mate and oran-ges, Golden Dorado fishing, and, of course, the river. That is why we chose to tour it on national route 12 along its western side, following the river Paraná and each of its beautiful cities: Paso de la Patria, Corrientes, Bella Vista, and Goya.

sana envidia me provocan los habi-tantes de las ciudades que tienen

costanera sobre un río. será que me conquista la calma del agua que arras-

tra canoas, lanchas, barcos y barcazas, ca-malotes, peces, y hasta sueños. porque la gente del río sabe mirarlo de un modo único, como si le pidiera deseos que siempre vie-nen de vuelta, como si no pudiera faltarle ese ritmo del agua que baja en las mañanas o las tardecitas. es que esos son los dos horarios del día en que es posible ver las costaneras más superpobladas: deportistas, aficionados al mate, poetas, estudiantes, chiquitos en triciclo, lectores, fotógrafos, artesanos, ena-morados, abuelos, ciclistas, vendedores de churros, chipá, pochoclo o pirulines. todos se encuentran ahí, en esos senderos que fun-cionan como balcones a la medida de ciuda-des que han crecido sin darle la espalda al río y que le han contagiado el amor de ese equilibrio entre lo natural y lo construido a su gente. Bienvenidos los ratitos que le pueden dedicar a vivirlo. Bienvenida la cultura saluda-ble del encuentro, el ocio y la famosa “vuelta del perro” pueblerina, que acá no es sobre la calle principal sino por el costado del río. en esta edición, por casualidad, tuvimos la suerte de ser invitados de tres escenarios como estos: el de corrientes, el de paraná, y el de montevideo. felices, las desandamos y aquí, se las compartimos.

I envy the inhabitants of the cities that have a riverside drive. I am seduced by the calm of the water that carries canoes, boats, small and big, camalotes, (Common Water Hyacinth), fish, and even dreams. The river people know how to look at it, as if asking for wishes that always return, as if they could not live without the rumor and the rhythm of the water coming down in the mornings or the afternoons. Those are the times of day when you can see the riverside drives most populated: sports-people, ma-te buffs, poets, students, kids on tricycles, photographers, strollers, artisans, lovers, grandparents, cyclists, churro (a kind of fried pastry) vendors, chipá (cheese buns), popcorn or candy. They all meet there, in those paths that function as balconies for cities that have grown without turning their backs on the river and have given their in-habitants the love for this balance between nature and constructions. They welcome the whiles they can dedicate to living it. We greet the healthy culture of this meeting with leisure, the famous small-town dog-walk, that here does not take you down main-street, you go by the river. In this edition, by chance, we had the luck to be invited to three scenarios such as these: Corrientes, Paraná, and Montevideo (Uruguay). Happy to do so, we toured them, and here we share them with you.

entre coPas, historias y leyendasSAN JUAN.– Aquí hay numerosas experiencias senso-riales para disfrutar a la par: historia natural y exquisitos sabores brindan placer en el marco de este recorrido turístico gourmet ligado a la Cordillera de los Andes. Por eso, el itinerario esta vez requirió de tiempos exactos con mapa en mano para poder enlazar la degustación de la uva syrah, la cepa estrella de la provincia, con la visita a un imperdible, el Parque Nacional Ischigualasto. El cálido viento Zonda musicaliza el paso para llevarnos hacia la primera parada: la bodega Graffigna, una de las más antiguas de la ciudad. Con la primera copa de vino comienza la cita por el museo, la historia de la bodega y el legado de sus fundadores. El Wine Bar es la fruti-lla del postre, que ambientado con originalidad, ofrece degustar los vinos con picadas regionales.La diversidad de la provincia lleva al turista de un extre-mo al otro, se está en contacto cien por ciento con la naturaleza en el Valle de la Luna o en el Valle Quebrada Ullum, a sólo 18 kilómetros de la ciudad, y al mismo tiem-po uno se puede sumergir en degustaciones y marida-jes exclusivos en bodegas boutiques.

Allí emergió a la superficie un universo geológi-co correspondiente al período triásico, marco en el que vivieron los primeros dinosaurios. El Parque Provincial Ischigualasto o Valle de la Luna ocupa 63 mil hectáreas al nordeste de la provincia. El silencio reina.Cada parada dentro del recorrido de 200 mi-llones de años representa formaciones geológicas de distintos colores que evidencian la presencia de dife-rentes minerales y geoformas por el constante accionar de la erosión a través del tiempo.En Ischigualasto se protege el paisaje agreste, la histo-ria natural y paleontológica. La aridez en esas coorde-nadas se toma un respiro, de tanto en tanto, con algunos algarrobos y otras especies de árboles de madera dura y finas vetas como cactus, cardones, espinillos y jarilla.

Allí habitan liebres, zorros colorados, pu-mas, guanacos, vizcachas y quirquinchos además de caranchos, cóndores, ñandúes y búhos. En quechua, Ischigualasto significa “sitio donde se posa la luna” y este es el paisaje que se contempla desde la segunda es-tación conocida como El Balcón de Valle Pintado, que también recibe el nombre de Valle de la Luna. En esta depresión blanca, árida y desértica hay rocas de formas curvas perfectamente modeladas por el agua, y coloreadas en tonos suaves por la arcilla y la arena. Aquí alguna vez hubo un lago donde los animales que se acercaban a beber quedaron atrapados por inundaciones, esa es la razón por la que son tan nítidas las huellas de fósiles. A cada minuto que se avanza en el camino, las forma-ciones sorprenden. Nadie acomodó esas piedras redon-das como dispuestas para un juego en La Cancha de Bochas. Llegaron solas hasta ahí y les tomó millones de años. Los geólogos explican que eran rocas con un nú-cleo del tamaño de un grano de sal, al que se adhirieron otras partículas. Por acción del viento, rodaron hasta la parte más baja del valle y aquí se quedaron para formar una de las estaciones más curiosas del Parque. Muy cerca está el Submarino, otra de las esculturas em-blemáticas, ubicada en la parte más alta del recorrido. Sorprenden las dos columnas que se mantienen ergui-das, intactas como mástiles de esta nave imponente. La próxima estación es El Hongo, el ícono, con una forma perfecta dada por la erosión del agua en la base arcillo-sa y la persistencia de los materiales en la cima. Luego,

aparecen Los Colorados, que corresponden a la última etapa del Triásico, con gran presencia de hierro.Dentro del museo y centro de interpretación en la en-trada del parque, se exhiben parte de las piezas paleon-tológicas que se encuentran en el predio. En la visita hay dos estrellas: el Eoraptor, un dinosaurio hallado en 1991 y el conjunto de cráneo y garra del Herrerasaurus. Ambos ejemplares pertenecen a las especies más antiguas del mundo, de 250 millones de años. Se puede caminar sobre un manto de rocas que conservan los rastros y se puede sentir el espíritu de los animales que lo habi-taron hace tanto tiempo. La magia no está sólo en los dinosaurios, todo este lugar es así porque Ischigualasto representa a su manera el comienzo del mundo.S

The winds and rain of time carved curious forms in the rocks, and locals gave them different names. In Quechua,

Ischigualasto means “the place where the moon rests” and this is the landscape you contemplate from the second station known as the Balconie of the Painted Valley, also known as Moon Valley. In this white, arid and desert depression, there are rocks with curved forms perfectly modeled by the water and with soft tones due to the clay and sand. Here there once was a lake where animals came to drink and were trapped by floods; that is why the fossil tracks are so clear.Every minute on the road you are surprised by the formations. No one put thos round stones in place, as if ready to play bowls. It took them millions of years to get there. Geologists explain they were rocks with a nucleus the size of a salt grain, to which other particles adhered. The wind rolled them down to the lowest part of the valley and there they stayed, forming one of the more curious stations of the Park. You can also go for a walk in the surroundings and see the signs of ancient woods and rivers stamped in the rocks. Close to the Bowling Alley is the Submarine, another emblematic sculpture, at the highest point of the tour.Two columns, intact like the masts of this imposing boat, are also a surprise. The next station is the Mushroom, the icon, with a perfect shape due to the erosion of the waters on a clay base, and the persistence of materials at the top. Then you come The Reds, corresponding to the last stage of the Triassic, characterized by their red color due to the presence of iron. This change of tones is the end of the tour, that in three hours allows you to observe the evolution of a whole geologic era.There have been visits under a full moon for four years, including sites not included in the customary day-tour.Inside the museum and interpretation center at the entrance of the park there are paleontological pieces on exhibit with an explanation of their importance. The visit has two stars: the Eoraptor, the remains of a dinosaur found in 1991, and the cranium and claw of an Herrerasaurus. Both pieces belong to the most ancient species, 250 million years old. Here you can walk on a mantle of rocks preserving the tracks and you can feel the spirit o the animals that inhabited the place so long ago. The magic is not only in the dinosaurs, the whole place gives you the same feeling because Ischigualasto represents the beginning of the world.S

En Seguridad Vial siempre decimos que el via-je debe comenzar cuando subimos al auto y no cuando se llega a destino. Pero la realidad es que comienza antes, planificando paradas para que el descanso, recomendado cada 2 horas, nos permita distendernos frente a un arroyo o en la plaza de un pueblo ignoto. Antes de salir es preciso chequear niveles de fluidos –refrigerante, aceite, líquido de frenos y hasta líquido para el “sapito” limpiapara-brisas–, y presión en neumáticos (inflar lo que indi-que el manual del vehículo). No olvidar chequear el auxilio y que no nos falten las herramientas (linterna incluida y tuerca de seguridad). Bien a mano, debemos tener las balizas refractarias tipo triángulo para señalizar ante una emergencia (en ruta se ubican 75 m antes y después de donde quedamos detenidos; en autopista, a 75 y 150 m antes del coche). En el habitáculo, sujeto debajo de la butaca del acompañante, el matafuegos con carga vigente (dura sólo un año). También es re-comendable llevar chaleco refractario, un foco de reemplazo para la luz alta/baja y algunos fusibles (lo más peligroso es quedarnos sin luces).Papeles en orden: cédula verde del vehículo –sin vencer, permite que lo conduzca cualquiera–, li-cencia de conducir acorde a peso y ejes (ojo con los trailers), constancia de seguro vigente –no es obligatorio el comprobante de pago–, y oblea de VTV si corresponde. Manta para los chicos, kit de higiene, navaja suiza, inflador eléctrico, botas de goma, plato y cubiertos, cargadores 12 volt, mazo de naipes, sopas instantáneas y bolsa para resi-duos son todos opcionales de los que gustamos llevar la casa a cuestas.S

In Road Security we always say the trip must start when we get into the car and not when you reach your destination. But the truth is it begins before that, when we plan stops for rests, recommended every two hours, that will allow us to distend by a stream or a plaza in an unknown town. Before you start, you need to check fluid levels –refrigerator, oil, brake fluid and even liquid for the windshield wi-per– and tyre pressure that should be as indicated by the car manual. Do not forget to check the spare tyre and keep tools on hand (including flashlight and locknuts). We must have the refracting emer-gency triangles on hand (on a road they are placed 75 meters before and after the car; on a highway 75 and 150 meters before the car). In the cabin, under the passenger’s seat, the fire extinguisher with an up to date charge (it only lasts a year). It is also recommended you should have a refracting vest, a replacement bulb for high and low lights and some fuses (not having lights is the most dangerous thing that can happen to you).Have your car papers up to date: green card in Argentina allows anybody to drive the car, drivers license coinciding with the weight and the number of vehicle axles (including trailer), insurance papers –you do not need the payment receipt– and the VTV (vehicle control office) sticker, according to where the vehicle is registered.Blanket for the kids, hygiene kit, Swiss knife, elec-tric pump, rubber boots, dish and cutlery, 12 volt charger, playing cards, instant soup and garbage bags are optional for those of us who like to take the whole house with us.S

MONTEVIDEO.– El medio y medio –una bebida mitad vino tinto mitad sidra– burbujea en copas, o en vasos. Da igual. En la parrilla, las pamplonas vestidas de papel aluminio relucen a la par de pimientos, achuras y carnes dorándose sobre las brasas encendidas des-de temprano. El aroma delicioso se atreve a desafiar la altura eterna de los techos de hierro con arcos de medio punto del viejo Mercado del Puerto mientras se agolpan turistas y locales para hallar un puesto en las barras que rodean a los parrilleros, atareadísimos cada mediodía. Si es sábado, más aún. Esa es una postal imperdible y riquísima de Montevideo. Es que si uno fue a Montevideo tiene que ver su Ciudad Vieja, caminarla y llegar a la manzana que contiene este Mercado, así como el Museo del Carnaval con alma de candombe, escenarios populares reproducidos a es-cala, máscaras, cabezudos de papel maché, tambores y tamboriles; y también el Río de la Plata, ahí nomás, con el puerto en plena actividad a toda hora. Así es la capital uruguaya. Así hay que comenzar por conocerla, alzando un vaso de medio y medio para brindar por el encuentro.Será raro encontrar un uruguayo sin un termo bajo el brazo y un mate en la otra mano: esto ocurre en la calle, en el colectivo, en el supermercado, en el shopping, en la costanera. MONTEVIDEO – The medio y medio –half and half, a beverage half red wine, half cider- bubbles in glasses. On the barbecue grill, the pamplonas dressed up in aluminum foil glitter by peppers, chitlins, and varied meats, cooking over the embers of the fire that was lit early in the day. The delicious aroma climbs to the eternal height of the iron roofs with arches of the old Port Market, while tourists and locals try to find a place on the bars surrounding the cooks, so busy at noon. It is Saturday. A postcard view of Montevideo you will not want to miss.If you go to Montevideo you just have to see the old City, walk and reach the block where this Market is, and the Museum of Mardi Gras, with a candombe soul, popular scenes reproduced at full scale, masks, papier maché heads, drums big and little: and also the River Plate, over there, with the port working hard all day long. Such is the Uruguayan capital. So raise your glass of medio y medio to toast the first encounter.It will be a rare Uruguayan you find without a thermos bottle under his or her arm and a mate in the other: you see this on the street, the bus, the supermarket, the shopping center, the waterfront. Therefore, trying the infusion will be another mission.Walking the waterfront along its 13 km of beaches is the third key to touring the city. The places you will not want to miss are Carrasco and Pocitos, where you can admire the skyline of the town over the river, sometimes with a little sea water, according to the wind. And there you find El Italiano, a restaurant, where you can eat fresh fish miniatures and sea-food.

Parks, architecture and fairsDowntown you can detect the influence of art deco in several buildings well preserved, and the powerful presence of the Solís Theatre, the metropolitan Cathedral and the dome of Salvo Palace, across from Independence Plaza, a building that is the twin of the Barolo Palace in Buenos Aires, considering their similarities and the fact they were both built by architect Mario Palanti in the 20’s. In this same civic plaza, there is a portal that connects the new city with the Old City, as if going through changes the

way you see Montevideo. It is Door of the Citadel, built around 1829 for protection against possible invasions. This plaza and the Matriz, and the Tristán Narvaja street, are the scenario on weekends for popular fairs where you can find antiques, lost objects, mate, artisan-ware, books, parts and even pets, fruit and pasta on Sunday.S

Por ende, probar dicha infusión, así uno no sea habitué, será otra misión por cumplir. Caminar la Costanera de punta a punta y sus playas que totalizan 13 km conforma la tercera clave del reco-rrido por la capital uruguaya. La zona imperdible es la de Carrasco y Pocitos, que permiten admirar el skyline de la ciudad sobre el río, a veces un poco mar, según cómo le influya el viento en el carácter. Ahí nomás está El Italiano, un restaurante típico para comer miniaturas de pescado y mariscos super frescos.

Parques, arquitectura y feriasEn el centro, es posible detectar la influencia del art decó en varios edificios bien conservados, así como la potente estampa del Teatro Solís, la catedral metro-politana y la cúpula del Palacio Salvo, frente a la pla-za Independencia, edificio hermanado con el Palacio Barolo de Buenos Aires por su gran parecido y la firma

compartida del arquitecto Mario Palanti en los ’20. En esa misma plaza cívica, hay un portal que comunica la nueva urbe con la Ciudad Vieja, como si traspasarla cambiara la manera de mirar a Montevideo. Se trata de la Puerta de la Ciudadela que funcionó, allá por 1829, como una protección ante posibles invasiones.Tanto esta plaza como la Matríz y la calle Tristán Narvaja son epicentro los fines de semana de ferias populares donde se pueden encontrar antigüedades, objetos perdidos de alguna época y tan buscados por algún coleccionista, mates, artesanías, libros, mascotas, frutas y hasta las pastas del domingo. Los inmensos parques son otro sello: el Battle, el Rodó y el Padro son espacios verdes gigantescos para el es-parcimiento. El Rodó congrega 25 hectáreas de jardines con un parque de diversiones; en el Prado se despliegan desde la residencia presidencial hasta el Jardín Botánico, juegos para niños y monumentos a poetas.S

UQUIA.– El camino a Humahuaca se abre paso en-tre cerros y quebradas que despliegan sus colores heredados de los distintos minerales que habitan la zona desde hace millones de años. A medida que uno avanza con destino incierto, puede sentir como el tiempo empieza a fundirse entre hilos de agua que apenas arrullan las piedras. Entre un viento persis-tente y denso que se desvía para no enfrentar los cardones y un sol lejano pero agobiante, se puede divisar entre la escasa vegetación la tímida torre de la iglesia de Uquía, que apenas cobija unas campanas castigadas por el tiempo. Su sonido se debe haber escuchado por primera vez a fines del año 1691 con-vocando a los escasos pobladores del lugar. Desviándonos algunos metros de la ruta nos recibe una plaza pequeña con algunos lugareños ofrecien-do sus artesanías, como una pintoresca antesala para llegar al pórtico de la iglesia enmarcado por un arco blanco, en una imagen modesta. Con un marcado estilo jesuítico, típicas paredes de adobe y techo de madera y cardón, el interior de la iglesia pare-ce transportarnos de manera inmediata a un pasa-do lejano donde la población, que no superaba las veinte familias, formaba parte de la “Encomienda de Humahuaca”. En su interior, oscurecido por cientos de años, resalta el altar construido en madera dorada a la hoja que contrasta ostentosamente con lo austero de la nave. También se puede observar una hermosa talla de San Francisco de Paula con una marcada influencia espa-ñola. Pertenecientes a la escuela cuzqueña, en sus paredes, cuelgan las pinturas de “Los ángeles arcabu-ceros”, que representados como soldados españoles con sus rostros andróginos, alas y arcabuces, parecen custodiar a través del tiempo el pequeño recinto.S

UQUIA.– The road to Humahuaca goes between mountains and gulches, presenting the colors inheri-ted from the different minerals that have inhabited the area for millions of years. As you go forward, you can feel time starting to melt into the different water streams that sing on the rocks. With a persistent and dense wind that tries to sidestep the cardones (cacti) and a distant but heavy sun, you discover the timid tower of the church of Uquía, holding a few bells weary with time. Their sound was probably heard for the last time around the year 1691, calling the scarce population.Deviating a few meters from the route, a small pla-za receives us with some locals offering their artisan wares, like a picturesque anticipation of the portal of the church, framed in a white arch, a modest image.

With a marked Jesuit style, typical adobe walls and wood and cardón roof, the interior of the church seems to transport us immediately to a long lost past, where the population, not more than twenty families, formed the “Encomienda of Humahuaca”. (An Encomienda in Spanish colonial times was an area under control of a representative of the crown called an Encomendero).The interior, with centuries of darkness, you find the alter built in wood covered with gold leaf, contrasting ostentatiously with the austerity of the nave. You can also observe the beautiful carving of San Francisco of Paula with a marked Spanish influence. On the walls you find the paintings of “Harquebus Angels” of the Cuzco School, represented as Spanish soldiers with their androgynous faces, wings and Harquebus. They seem to be the custodians of the place.S

HUMAHUACA. En 1594 se toma “posesión” del poblado Omawaka en común acuerdo entre españoles y locales. Entonces, se creó el Cabildo, la Plaza de Armas y la iglesia que venera a la Virgen de la Candelaria. Sus muros exhiben 12 cuadros de profetas pintados por Marcos Zapaca en 1764.S

HUACAlerA. Cerca de esta capilla del siglo XVII se en-terró el cuerpo del general Juan Lavalle para evitar que fuera capturado por sus perseguidores en 1841. Ejemplo de la arquitectura de la colonia, conserva pinturas cuzqueñas únicas en su temática como “El Bautismo de la Virgen”.S

PARANÁ.– El Parque Urquiza resume la fisonomía de barrancas urbanas que definen a Paraná, dise-ñado por Carlos Thays admirando el río, los barcos y el andar cansino de los camalotes furtivos sobre el agua.Los paranaenses viven esta porción de su geografía con orgullo. De día, es lugar de caminata, deportes, picnic y mate, e incluso es el sitio elegido para las noches de verano hasta que las encuentre la ma-drugada con música en vivo, chicos en los juegos de la plaza, helados, amigos en la previa de la disco, y más caminantes. Probablemente, quien las recorra por primera vez se sorprenda y le lleve un segundo viaje terminar de descubrir todos sus recovecos. Porque este balcón del río Paraná que ocupa 44 hectáreas tiene dibujos curiosos de curvas, subidas y bajadas y tres estadíos o terrazas que lo ordenan en altura: la costanera alta contiene el emblemático Hotel Mayorazgo y la zona residencial, así como senderos peatonales y ciclo-vías que se internan entre los lapachos florecidos en rosa, los palos borrachos, las esculturas, balco-

neos miradores, El Rosedal y el gran Monumento de cuatro caras al General Urquiza datado en 1920; la terraza media es el espacio de lo construido para desafiar la pendiente, escalinatas de piedra, acueductos, un bello puentecito y el anfiteatro municipal; finalmente, la parte baja del parque se encuentra con el río y da lugar a la Costanera, con fuentes, miradores, salida de barcos, clubes náuti-cos, playitas públicas de arena, pescadores y gente, siempre mucha gente.Cuenta la historia que estas tierras fueron una do-nación, en principio, de Dolores Costa, la viuda del General Justo José de Urquiza, en 1894. Entonces, el intendente de la ciudad Francisco Bertozzi (jus-tamente homenajeado con su estatua en un sector del parque) puso en marcha, junto al francés Thays, la forestación intensa de las barrancas que hoy lucen un abanico admirable de especies: álamo plateado, ciprés, jacarandá, chañar, aromo, cedro, tipa, pino, sauce, lapacho rosado, aguaribay, paraíso, palo borra-cho y encina, por sólo detallar algunos. PARANÁ – Urquiza Park sums up the physiognomy of the urban ravines that define Paraná, designed by Charles Thays, admiring the river, the ships, and the tired flow of the furtive water lilies.The people of Parana are proud of this part of their geography. By day it is place to go for walks, sports, picnics and mate, and even the chosen place for summer nights, all the way to sunup, with live music, kids in the playground, ice-cream, friends before going to the disco, and more walkers.Probably those that see it for the first time will take a while to discover all its nooks and crannies. Because this balcony over the Paraná river, occupying 44 hectares, has curious drawings of curves, ups and downs, and three terraces at different heights: the high riverside drive with the emblematic Mayorazgo Hotel and the residential area, along with pedestrian and bicycle paths, weaving between the rose flowering Tabebuia trees (Cecropia peltata), locally known as lapachos, the ceiba speciosa (locally known as drunk stick), the sculptures, balconies and vantage points, the Rose Garden and the great four-sided monument to General Urquiza form 1920; the middle terrace is the space for defying the slope, stone ladders, aqueducts, a beautiful little bridge, and the municipal amphitheatre; finally, the lower part of the park on the banks of the river, where it meets the waterfront with fountains, vantage points, nautical clubs, public sand beaches, fishermen and people, always lots of people.These lands were a donation by Dolores Costa, the widow of General Justo José de Urquiza, in 1894. Then the mayor of the city, Francisco Bertozzi (with due homage including his statue in a part of the park), started, together with the Frenchman Thays, the intense forestation of the ravine with the admirable variety of species you find there now: silver poplar, tabebuia, ceiba speciosa, American pepper tree, silver berry, and holly oak, just to name a few. Meanwhile, the Rose Garden, under the custody of a replica of the “Venus leaving the bath”, comes to life again with colors and perfumes.Poetry is also present in the Bridge of Sighs, with rimes dedicated to its waterless destiny, only a street crossing below. Hay chicos a los que les basta con tararear el “va-mos de paseo” para disfrutar de los viajes en auto. sin embargo, al cabo de un rato, el truco decae y con él, el encantamiento de la tranquilidad en el asiento trasero. ¿Qué hacer? aguzar el ingenio –ju-gar a recordar animales y colores, escuchar un Cd, leerles un libro- o recurrir a artilugios tecnológicos: dVd portátil, dibujos animados en capítulos cortos (por si el niño no está acostumbrado a fijar por mu-cho tiempo la vista en movimiento y así evitar algún mareo indeseado) o juguetes que se puedan fijar en los asientos delanteros sin aristas ni durezas, evitando sus desprendimientos que causaran lasti-maduras ante una frenada. es en este punto donde surge un tópico esencial: la seguridad. aburrido o no, con o sin lágrimas, falten pocos o muchos kilómetros, no es negociable sacar al bebé o al niño de su silla de seguridad. está claro que el tránsito no es un juego y por eso, hay que disponer de mé-todos de entretenimiento para que los pequeños pasen varias horas atados. Quizás sea bueno pre-miarlos con un dulce (aún si no es pediátricamente ético) cuando logren quedarse sentados por largo rato sin quejas, exceptuando bebidas con bombilla y chupetines, nada indicados para el movimiento. Y en las paradas de descanso, dejarlos corretear en algún lugar verde (no al costado de la ruta, sino en alguna plaza o recinto de estación de servicio con juegos) para que gasten la energía acumulada en el asiento de atrás. una música suave y el andar del vehículo seguramente ayudará a que, después del ejercicio, concilien una siesta envidiable.S

There are kids who are happy just to hum a tune on a car ride. However, the trick works only for a while and that is the end of calm in the back seat. What to do? Inventiveness is the clue: play verbally with the youngest, trying to remember the names of animals and colors, listen to a CD, read a book, tell family stories. Or resort to more technological devices: portable DVD with movies, cartoons in short chapters (if the child is not used to keeping his eyes fixed on something that moves, and so avoid dizziness) or toys without pointed angles or hard parts that can be fixed to the front seat, avoiding detachments that could cause some hurt if you need to hit the brakes. Here an essential topic for mothers on the road appears: security. Bored or not, with or without tears, when there are a few or many miles to go, taking the child out of his protective seat is non-negotiable. Clearly traffic is no game, and so there have to be entertainment methods for the little ones that have to be tied to their seats. Maybe it is a good idea to give them a prize in the form of a song they like or a sweet (even if this is questionable in pediatric terms) when they are able to stay put for a long while without complaining. Though you cannot resort to drinks with straws or lollipops which are out of the question in a car that is moving. At every stop let them run around in some green spot (not by the route, in some plaza or at a service station with playground), so they can spend some of the energy accumulated in the back seat. Soft music and the vehicles movement will surely help them nap off after the exercise.S

Lo que eL agua trae

CORRIENTES.– Descubrir el payé –léase, encanta-miento o hechizo– de Corrientes no es difícil. Basta con probar el primer bocado de chipá M’bocá ca-lentito, recién sacado de la caña tacuara que le sirve para dorarse sobre el fuego; con caminar por la cos-tanera de cualquier ciudad dejándose atrapar por el magnetismo del río Paraná; o con empuñar una caña de pescar para que el payé tenga razón: después de visitar este suelo generoso en energía y gente servi-cial, de seguro se lo extrañará al volver a casa.En el corredor turístico que enhebra la Ruta Nacional 12, de Norte a Sur, habrá que visitar Paso de la Patria, la villa turística con aguas bendecidas por la abundancia de los dorados, el pez más buscado del Paraná por la pelea que ofrece ante los anzuelos; la ciudad de Corrientes, capital de la provincia, con su costanera florecida de lapachos rosados y el puente protagonista de la co-nexión con Resistencia, Chaco, del otro lado del río; Bella Vista, un poblado que le hace honor a su nombre con barrancas increíbles elevándose sobre el agua; y Goya, el lugar óptimo para la pesca del surubí. El recorrido deberá respetar, eso sí, varias condiciones: es ideal para hacerlo en auto, con el mate siempre a mano, chipá comprado en alguna plaza, tiempo para relajarse en playitas y costaneras, y un chamamé so-nando en la radio. El payé llegará indefectiblemente.

siete Puntas y muchos saboresPara vivir la capital de la provincia es preciso recorrer su orilla caminándola y al nivel del agua. Por eso, un paseo clásico es la navegación de las Siete Puntas, un fenómeno de rompientes que desvía las aguas del río hacia su centro en ciertas zonas de la costa. Las hay más rocosas sobre el lado norte de la ciu-dad y más urbanas, enmarcadas por murallones en el paseo costanero donde la gente se sienta a ver el paso de las lanchas, a tirar su caña y matear a toda hora del día.Precisamente, una de las puntas, junto al Club Náutico, tiene como insignia un monumento a Mitre y mirando hacia el parque del mismo nombre que está por detrás, un homenaje a las mujeres tomadas cautivas en la Guerra del Paraguay, en 1865. Ahí mismo en el parque, aguarda el puesto de Chipá M’ bocá más concurrido de la ciudad. De a poquito y con paciencia (aunque con engranajes automáticos que ayudan a hacer girar las cañas tacuara), sobre las brasas se cuece este pan de harina de mandioca y queso a la manera en que, se dice, lo doraban los soldados en la guerra envolviendo la masa en el caño de sus fusiles. en los patios del Convento de San Francisco, permite degustar la regionalidad a la mesa: sopa paraguaya, chipá guazú, chicharrón trenzado (una carne cocida con grasa, deliciosa), Mbaypú (polenta de harina de maiz con distintas carnes), suburí, boga y pacú en distintos estilos, y a la hora de los postres, más que sabrosos frutos en almíbar. Los infaltables: mamón, sidra y los pequeños y dulces aguaí. Del Convento se sale directo a la calle Italia (que fuera avenida anteriormente, y por ser sólo de una cuadra se ganara el mote de “la avenida más corta del mundo”, aunque ya perdió esa gloria al convertirse en paseo). Aquí se encuentra el primero de cientos de murales hechos con material cementicio e imágenes regionales en tonos pastel sumamente expresivas. Este arte se replica en toda la provincia, en los arcos de entrada a los pueblos, las costaneras, las plazas. Si de arte se trata, habrá que persignarse frente al cu-rioso Cristo alado crucificado tallado sobre la puerta de la Catedral; dar una vuelta por el Museo de Bellas Artes, y conocer los trabajos vernáculos en el Museo de Artesanías Correntinas.

Paraísos de pescaA apenas 30 km de la capital, aparecen las playas y la diversidad ictícola del río en la villa turística por excelencia de la provincia: Paso de la Patria. Allí, cada año se lleva a cabo la Fiesta Nacional del Dorado, una especie que no se comercializa, por lo que será imposible probarla excepto que un pescador amigo pueda llevarse una pieza de las aguas. Spinning, trolling, fly fishing y con mosca son algunas de las técnicas que se utilizan para este deporte, ya

en la ciudad de corrientes, hay que estar atentos a la programación del magnífico teatro solis y los encuentros de folclore

sea embarcado o desde la costa. En las playas de este pueblo, también hay lugar para hacer parapen-te sobrevolando el Paraná y fotografiar postales ro-mánticas como la piedra de los enamorados, donde es casual encontrar cigüeñas blancas en pareja para completar la imagen. A la vera de las rutas, los puestitos de venta de sa-bores típicos tientan la compra al paso de naranjas, mamón en almíbar, miel y licores caseros. Así se hace más ameno el camino con rumbo Sur hasta descubrir a la encantadora Bella Vista que bien puesto tiene su nombre. Nada mejor que ir directo al parque de la Cruz, que domina las vistas de sus barrancas desde lo alto de una de ellas. Ese corte abrupto genera un ángulo de 90° entre la tierra y las aguas, que toman un tono rojizo atrapante mientras va despidiéndose el sol. Tan bien cuidado está el pueblo que su plaza central, su área de juegos y parrillas cerca de la Cruz y su playa con piscina dentro del río son invitaciones permanentes para el disfrute familiar. Con arena fina y palmeras para asolearse en la orilla, las canoas y lanchas esperan para adentrarse en las aguas, los esteros del Paraná y el avistaje de aves. Finalmente, Goya aguarda unos 80 km más al sur, con el surubí como estrella de su porción del río. Con vida tranquila de pueblo y encanto costero en común con este encadenamiento de localidades correntinas, hay una particularidad que conocer encarnada en un monumento: todas las primaveras, las golondrinas eligen esta ciudad para llegar en su vuelo desde San Juan de Capistrano, en California. Aquí, las espera el aire templado y los atardeceres bellos, al ritmo del chamamé.S

Planning the trip to the Litoral* we realized there were many kilometers and days with lots to tour on board the car. We were three adults and 2 little ones with their safety seats that occupy a wider space than a person. Also, we knew that at our destination we would have to include a guide. We needed a wide and comfortable vehicle that could adapt both to the luggage and to the need to include more passengers. This is what the Peugeot 5008 offers. A mono-volume with a stylized exterior design, preserving in the front the definition of agility and masculinity of the brand, and even considering its height (defined by the double zero of the name of the model) it has excellent aerodynamics and fast response on route with 1.6 engine.The driving posture clearly differs from other sports products of the Lion, but the comfort and safety features include a higher vision –but diametrically opposed to the old vans-, arms rest, the location of the stick (higher and closer to the instrument panel), and the different positions of the seats, not only the driver’s, also the passenger’s seat and the second row with three independent seats –allowing access to the third row. This is precisely the big secret the 5008 has in the trunk, or better said, under it. Total adaptability to be able to use the full capacity of its tank (between 580 and 679 liters), according to how far the second row of seats is pushed back, in a third row with two additional seats, with three point inertial belts. Para entender el sitio, hay que dimensionarlo y así se entenderá su magnificencia: el edificio principal es de hormigón armado, de 30 metros, equivalente a un edificio de 10 pisos de altura; por encima, se erige la cruz, una estructura metálica de 52 metros, con lo que el conjunto alcanza los 82 metros de altura. Y hasta allí se puede subir mediante escaleras o dos ascensores para obtener una vista del verde circundante que deja sin aliento desde lo que los lugareños llaman “el ojo de la selva”. O acceder a otras perspectivas desde los distintos ángulos que proveen sus balcones. El ecosistema también está a la mano del visitante a través de un sendero de 600 metros donde interpre-tar el ambiente autóctono y al mismo tiempo, recorrer siete estaciones para la oración y la reflexión de los peregrinos. La travesía de los amigos aventureros llega a su fin en el norte de la provincia de Santa Cruz y junto al Océano Atlántico para complementar

la pulcritud de los hielos continentales con una experiencia única de acercamiento a la fauna costera y su curioso hábitat

en el estuario de la Ría Deseado

PUERTO DESEADO.– Luego de amarrar todo a la camioneta para cruzar la estepa patagóni-ca en Santa Cruz, partimos con rumbo a Puerto Deseado, nuestro ultimo destino en el noreste de esta provincia, donde nuestra aventura finaliza-ría. Allá nos esperaba un amigo, Ricardo Pérez, de “Darwin Expediciones”, quien nos había re-comendado dar una vuelta de tuerca a nuestros anteriores destinos y nuestras anteriores remadas, y nos propuso algo realmente diferente. Ahora el objetivo era ahondarnos en la flora y fauna del lugar, que vale aclarar es muy diversa e impresio-nante. Así que apenas nos recibió, cambiamos los dulces glaciares y kayaks de travesía por los botes cortos y el mar abierto, para relajarnos y diver-tirnos surfeando unas olas. Al final del día, nos encontramos conversando y comiendo algo rico entre anécdotas y ambiente familiar. Por la mañana, el reloj sonó temprano y tal como nos habían prometido, partimos hacia algo mágico. Remamos en la Ría Deseado, antagonismo absolu-to entre lo que veníamos viendo. Entre las paredes frías de hielo de los glaciares de años que nos pesaban en la memoria, hubo que hacer un alto para parpadear y registrar que frente nuestro se habría una paleta de colores y vida muy cambiantes, desde un acantilado con nidos de cor-moranes (son aves acuáticas que capturan peces zambulléndose bajo el agua), islas superpobladas por completo de gaviotas y lobos marinos, hasta el comienzo de la vida misma con un asentamiento de pingüinos quienes cuidaban a sus pichones y sus huevos por nacer.

Desde la mañana hasta la media tarde contempla-mos este lugar que recomendamos con énfasis si se quiere estar al lado de pingüinos y lobos.A la vuelta, luego de una merienda caliente y de intercambiar aventuras con el dueño de casa, decidimos que ya era tiempo de volver a nuestro Bariloche, y así planear el próximo destino, armar rutas, ideas, y con toda la experiencia vivida en este viaje, volcarla a la nueva aventura.

Un lugar diferentePuerto Deseado, también denominada zonalmen-te Deseado, es un pueblo y puerto pesquero en la Patagonia, precisamente en la provincia de Santa Cruz, nacido sobre la orilla norte de la ría Deseado.Es esta falla geológica inusual la que lo bautiza y de-fine: la Ría Deseado se forma luego de la desembo-cadura del río Deseado, cuando el mar decide entrar por su cauce en contra de las leyes naturales habi-tuales. Se trata de un estuario con gran importancia biológica declarado Reserva Natural Provincial. Y en su margen norte se ubica la ciudad.La ría es única en la costa Patagónica y Argentina. En ella es posible registrar al menos 34 especies de aves marinas y costeras que pueden ser ob-servadas nidificando o utilizando el área a modo de paso. También se registran apostaderos de lo-bos marinos de un pelo. Puerto Deseado – After tying everything to the truck to cross the Patagonia steppe in Santa Cruz, we left towards Puerto Deseado, our last destination in the Northeast of the province, where our adventure would end. There a friend, Ricardo Pérez, of “Darwin Expeditions” awaited us, and he had recommended we add a new twist to our previous destinations, pro-posing something really different. Now the goal was to see the flora and fauna of the place, which is very diverse and impressive. So as soon as we met him, we changed the glaciers and kayaks for short boats and the open sea, relaxing and surfing the waves. At the end of the day we were chatting and eating something rich, exchanging anecdotes in what felt like a family gathering.In the morning the alarm-clock went off early and as we had been promised, we went out to see something magical. We rowed in the Deseado Ría, the absolute opposite ompared to what we had been seeing. Among the cold ice walls of the glaciers weighing on our minds, we had to stop and blink and admit we had in front of us a colorful pallet full of life, changing all the time, from a cliff with cormorant nests (they are aquatic birds that capture fish diving below the water), and an over- populated island with sea-gulls and sea-wolves, to the beginning of life itself, with penguin co-lonies caring for their young and eggs about to hatch.

It is an estuary of great biological im-portance, declared Natural Provincial Reservation. The city is on the north margin.The ria is unique on the Patagonia and Argentinean coast. You can find at least 34 species of marine and coastal birds, that can be seen in their nests or using the area as a passage. Also there are sea wolves of one color. Another curiosity is Penguin Island, where you find the yellow crested variety, the only place so near the continent where you can see them at arms reach.S

Hay cientos de razones para entenderlo así en este re-corrido que resume la Patagonia en 110 km ideales para recorrer en auto, a ritmo personal, dejándose envolver por bos-ques de coihues, cipreses y roble pellín, además de la Cordillera de los Andes. Este tramo de la ruta nacional 234 une a Villa La Angostura con San Martín de los Andes, en Neuquén. Se lo puede en-carar como ruta con el objetivo de llegar de una a otra ciudad, o como excursión de día completo. Hay que vivirlo como un destino en sí mismo, donde cada rin-cón es valioso, cada mirador arranca un suspiro –imperdibles el del Pil Pil, y el del Lago Espejo– y cada costa de lago –Correntoso, Escondido, Espejo, Falkner, Lácar, Machónico y Villarino– es protago-nista para la foto. Santa Fe es el tambo de la Argentina: gran par-te de la cadena lechera nace y se desarrolla en sus campos, brindándole una identidad definitiva a esta provincia de llanuras extensas, pueblos pequeños, y vacas, muchas vacas. Es así que fue la leche la que inspiró la creación de la primera ruta turística temática de este territorio de alma campera, pasando por treinta y cinco comunas y municipios como Rafaela, Esperanza, Cañada Rosquín, Sunchales, Moisés Ville, Humberto 1°, Ataliva, entre otros. Establecimientos relacionados con el proceso productivo agropecuario, la elaboración industrial de los lácteos y la degustación de la cocina regional –in-fluida, por cierto, por el saber culinario inmigrante de la región– son quienes reciben con generosidad a los tu-ristas, con algunas posadas y pequeños hoteles donde hacer las paradas estratégicas entre tramo y tramo. La cadena lechera comparte a los viajeros el espíritu de los que se levantan al alba en los tambos para atarse el banquito de madera petiso a las piernas para comenzar el ordeñe; el espíritu de las cocineras de pueblo que saben hacer con este oro blanco las más deliciosas aleaciones; y hasta las fiestas populares relacionadas con el producto, que tienen reina propia, claro que sí.

En algunos establecimientos o cabañas de cría de ganado habrá que arremangarse y ser parte de las tareas rurales, ordeñe incluido, para disfrutar la jornada con más cercanía; en otros, se podrá en-carar degustaciones y poner las manos en la masa para cocinar o seguir los pasos de la elaboración de quesos. Lo más gratificante vendrá también del lado gastro-nómico, puntualmente, de la degustación y cata de quesos, fondue, dulces de leche y más derivados. Habrá oportunidad de comprar souvenirs, fotogra-fiar el campo y sus animales, ver cómo funcionan las agroindustrias en visitas guiadas, visitar museos agropecuarios con maquinarias de antaño, elegir menúes basados por completo en la leche, hacer ca-balgatas y avistajes de aves, y hasta mimarse con un tratamiento de spa basado en proteínas lácteas. Los pueblos rurales están abiertos y expectantes de mostrar su vida cotidiana, platos típicos y paisa-je campestre que, para el turista, son un plus muy atractivo. A la vez, la historia y la pertenencia a esta ruta se fortalecen en la identidad regional, dinamiza sus economías y valoriza un elemento tan emblemá-tico para la argentinidad.S

Desde La Habana, la magia de emprender un viaje profundo por

la vida real y cultural de la isla más grande del Caribe

Colores, sol y gente intensa

LA HABANA.– Introducirse en las vías troncales que recorren la isla de Cuba es una sensación única, que real-mente sólo se vive en este lugar del mundo. La estadía en la ciudad de La Habana pasa por el descubrimiento de to-do lo que se ve y se vive a cada instante. Vale anotar que uno no puede irse sin fotografiar su arquitectura colonial, el capitolio, el Museo de la Revolución, la Habana Vieja y su gente. Tampoco sin haber encarado un recorrido inspirador de 800 Km que atraviesa en auto la diversidad de sus paisajes y brinda conexión directa con su historia y cultura fuera de los centros turísticos. Anótese tam-bién un itinerario con mapa en mano desde La Habana hasta Trinidad, visitando Santa Clara y Playa Ancón. Todas las rutas de la perla del Caribe a disposición para meterse de lleno en la forma de vida de los cubanos. Por los caminos circulan todo tipo de vehículos: autos (la mayoría de 1950 pintados de colores intensos ya descascarados), tractores viejos, caballos, bueyes, y “guaguas” –los mini colectivos cubanos- que conectan la rutina de la gente con los paisajes del interior de la isla.Cuando bajo el sol caribeño comienza a sonar por los autoparlantes la primera guajira cantada por Elíades Ochoa, el famoso músico de Buena Vista Social Club, es señal de que la aventura empezó a rodar. Es el punto ideal para hacer la primera parada y conocer la historia de la batalla de Santa Clara, donde en 1959 toman el tren blindado y provocan la caída del dictador Batista.Las distancias son cortas. Si se quiere recorrer la isla de punta a punta la distancia máxima es de 1300 km, ya que esa es la longitud total del país. Atrás quedó Santa Clara, e inmediatamente el plan de viaje conduce hacia Trinidad, una ciudad colonial creada en 1495 sobre las costas del mar Caribe.
