LA BRu ju LAEsta provincia del Noroeste Argentino re-sume cuatro geografías diversas en sus 59.000 m2 de superficie: valles, yungas, la Quebrada de Humahuaca (patrimonio de la humanidad) y en lo más alto del terreno, la Puna, desolada y abrazada por cerros, con salares y petroglifos. El destino de es-te número es Casabindo, a 3.377 m.s.n.m., en el departamento de Cochinoca. Para llegar allí, se puede volar a San Salvador de jujuy y recorrer unos 270 km por ruta pavimentada vía Humahuaca. Desde allí, subir la Cuesta de Azul Pampa, bajando a Tres Cruces, luego a Abra Pampa y desviar hacia Casabindo 55 km. También se puede llegar por Purmamarca y Cuesta de Lipán, en este caso por un camino complementente de ripio, pero en buen estado.

THE COMPASSThis province in Argentina’s Northeast concentrates four different geographies, in its 59.000 square kilometers: valleys, yungas, the Canyon of Humahuaca (a patrimony of humanity) and in the highest part of the territory, the Puna, desolate and embraced by the mountains, with salt flats and petrogliphs. In this edition we reach Casabindo, 3377 meters above sea level, in the department of Cochinoca. To get the-re the first step is a flight to San Salvador de jujuy and then some 200 km by rout, through Humahuaca. From there we climb the Hights of Azul Pampa, then down to Tres Cruces, then Abra Pampa and the road to Casabindo, 55 km from there. you can also reach Casabindo through Purmamarca and Cuesta de Lipán, in this case taking a gravel road.

Si la Quebrada de Humahuaca me había resulta-do siempre un destino mágico, Casabindo pudo profundizar esa sensación sobre el territorio jujeño, esta vez, a 3370 msnm, en plena Puna, donde los cielos son más extensos, las vicuñas son dueñas de los pastizales y donde vale la pena hacer frente al frío de las noches para observar la Vía Láctea brillar como nunca antes. Fue un 14 de agosto, el día previo al Toreo de la Vincha, en que emprendimos el camino cuesta arriba entre Tilcara y Casabindo para llegar a tiempo de ser parte de los preparativos: ver bajar de los cerros a las bandas de sicuris con su música, a los peregrinos con sus imá-genes de la Virgen en alto, y a las mujeres del pueblo vistiendo los santos con flores y ropas de color. En la iglesia inmensa, no me sentí fo-ránea. Encendí una vela, pedí un gran deseo, al poco tiempo, se cumplió. Es como si la fe aquí arriba tomara una nueva dimensión. Mientras caía la noche, llegaban los valientes que torearían al día siguiente y sobre la plaza se iba alimentando el fuego para congregar las almas. Comenzaron los cánticos, los bailes, más ofrendas. Me senté en el suelo, como si quisiera sentirlo vibrar con ese sincretismo entre lo ca-tólico y lo aborigen. Esta es la única noche del año en que vibra Casabindo. Si no, allí viven 200 solitarias almas, como las que hay disper-sas por la inmensidad de la Puna, que es puro silencio y soledad. Me lo confirmó una peque-ñita, con impecable inocencia, que no pasaba los 6 años: “hoy hay fiesta... así Casabindo debe parecerse a la ciudad, ¿no?”.

If the Humahuaca Gorge has always been a magical destination for me, Casabindo made that feeling even deeper, this time 3700 meters above sea level, in the midst of the Puna, where the skies are wider, the vicuñas own the grassy

extensions, and where you take on the cold of the night to stare at the Milky Way, shining like you never seen it before.It was on August 14, the day before the Toreo de la Vincha (Headband Bullfight), that we started on the road, climbing from Tilcara to Casabindo, to be on time for the preparations: to see the Sicuri bands with their music coming down from the mountains, the pilgrims with their images of the Virgin held high, and the women of the town covering the saints with flowers and colored clothes. I did not feel a stranger in the immense Church. I lit a candle and asked for a big wish that came true. It is as if faith here has a new dimension. With the night fall come the brave people that will confront the bulls the following day, as an offering to the Virgin. In the plaza the bonfires congregated the souls. Singing and dancing started. I sat on the ground as if to feel it vibrating with the syncretism between the Catholic and the aboriginal beliefs. This is the only night in the year that Casabindo vibrates. The rest of the year you only find 200 solitary souls there, just like all the others you find dispersed in the immensity of the Puna, pure silence and solitude. A little girl, no older than 6 confirmed it: “Today there is fiesta… so Casabindo must look like a city, right?”

Una infinidad de recorridos por las sierras cercanas, llevan a descubrir

la vegetación densa y los arroyos cristalinos de esta región de San Luis

El perfil de Potrero de los Funes está dibujado por sierras, quebradas, arroyos y el lago, prota-

gónico, a 1000 msnm, enmarcado por los cerros. Es indiscutible reconocer su belleza, dado el sin-gular recorrido que el espejo de agua describe para andar en vehículo, bicicleta o caminando. Sólo con 40 minutos de trekking por las sierras, bordeadas de especies autóctonas, se puede encontrar el Salto de la Moneda, una caída de agua de unos 14 m.Los cerros, como abrazan el pueblo, son una al-ternativa óptima para caminatas acompañado por mulas que llevan los víveres. Por ejemplo, hasta Valle de Piedra se llega cuesta arriba por una huella que bordea el arroyo Los Molles y permite, en época estival, remojarse en sus piletones. A medida que se asciende, los molles, talas, y espinillos dejan paso a la aridez y el pedregullo. El Cerro El Moro, al oeste del pueblo, cuenta con pendientes bastante pronunciadas para aventu-rarse por medio de un monte muy espinoso, en la senda que dejan las cabras. Desde la cima, es posible observar dos diques que también definen la geografía del lugar: el Dique Potrero de Los Funes (construido en 1860, reconstruido en 1876, uno de los más antiguos de Sudamérica) y el Cruz de Piedra. Finalmente, los que aman la escalada y los deportes con cuerdas, pueden hallar su espacio en la Quebrada de Los Cóndores, grandes paredones graníticos por donde atraviesa el río homónimo a la localidad.Por supuesto que las aguas del lago también tienen su convite refrescante: pesca, natación, windsurf, canotaje y jet ski.

You can reach Valle de Piedra taking a path that borders a stream. As you ascend the mountain, you

leave behind the talas (celtis tala), and espinillos (acacia caven), and enter an arid landscape of gravel. Mount Moro, to the west, has steep slopes that you can climb through a very thorny woodland taking a goat track. From the top you can observe two dikes that also define the geography of the place: the Potrero de los Funes dike (built in 1860, and rebuilt in 1876, is one of the oldest in South America) and the Cruz de Piedra. Finally, for people who love climbing and sports with ropes, there are high granitic walls in the Quebrada de los Cóndores, with a river that bears the same name.

Una multitud transforma el aire solitario de este pueblo en Jujuy cada 15 de agosto, para honrar la Asunción de la Virgen y ofrendarle la valentía en una toreada, la única incruenta de toda Sudamérica | Por Soledad Aguado |

CASABINDO.– Lo español, lo an-cestral, lo aborigen, lo católico. La

reunión de toda esa cultura se da una vez al año, los 15 de agosto, en Casabindo, un pueblo de casas de adobe, muy pocas familias, y una iglesia imponente de pie-dra canteada construida en 1772, bien llamada “la Catedral de la Puna”. El case-río que vive de la cría de llamas y ovejas, y los tejidos que de sus lanas derivan, se torna punto de encuentro para los fieles del Norte, que bajan con las imágenes de la Virgen de la Asunción (de la que se conmemora su día) a cuestas, rodeados

de músicos con erques, bombos, quenas y cajas, con sonidos profundos como las bocanadas de aire que el oxígeno de estas alturas obliga a dar al caminar. Primero, vale la pena situarse en el lugar, descubriendo la inmensidad en la que se ubican sus casitas y corrales. Luego, di-visar la gente que empieza a bajar de los cerros, sin importar la edad, con ropas de colores tejidas en telar. La fiesta se va concentrando de a poco en la plaza delimitada por pircas frente al templo y ya para la noche del 14, habrá llegado la mayoría de los habitantes de la

región. Y también los toreros: porque aquí, además de rezos y ofrendas a la Virgen de la Asunción y a la Pachamama (Madre Tierra), habrá una toreada, la única in-cruenta de toda Sudamérica. Los toros retozan en un gran corral y se niegan a ser enlazados desde la mañana. Al que le toque en suerte tener una vincha de monedas de plata colgando de sus astas, ingresará al re-cinto central y será, tal vez, domado por un valiente. Si éste lograra tomar la vincha sin que el toro lo lastime ni embista, la ofrecerá a la Virgen y pedirá por las buenas cosechas en un gesto de fe.

CASABINDO.- Spanish, ancient, aboriginal, Catholic. All those cultures

meet once a year, August 15, in Casabindo, a village of adobe huts, very few families, and an imposing stone church, built in 1772, rightly named the “Cathedral of the Puna”. The village, with its economy based on llama and lamb breeding and weaving the wool from both species, is a meeting point for the believers in the North of Argentina, coming down to Casabindo with their images of the Assumption of Mary (this is her day), surrounded by musicians with erque (a long wind instrument made from a cane), drums, quena (short wind instrument, also made from a cane), and caja (or box, a percussion instrument), with profound sounds, like the deep breaths you have to take here to get enough oxygen to your lungs while you walk.

The celebration is concentrating slowly in the plaza, surrounded by a low stone wall (pirca), across from the temple, and most people will have arrived by the night of the 14th. Also, there are the bullfighters: because here, along with the prayers and the offerings to the Virgin Mary and the Pachamama (Mother Earth), there will be a bullfight, the only one with no bloodshed in South America.The bulls that get a headband with silver coins tangled in their horns will be taken to the center of the rink where the bullfighters will try to tame them. The brave bullfighter that is able to untangle the headband from the horns without getting hurt, will offer it to the Virgin and ask for a good harvest.The heroes of the bullfight are cheered on, from early in the morning, by the public, sitting around the main rink. Some climb

the surrounding hills to have a panoramic view of the procession and the bullfights. There are stands on the street offering locro (a maize and meat stew), maize cream, spicy chicken, empanadas (small ground meat pies), and fried wheat patty. Outside the village there are artisans and peasants offering their native produce.For those walking along the paths close to the plaza there is the experience of touching the colored ribbons placed on the images of the Virgin Mary, taken from the church out to the sun; watching the samilantes dancing with their firm steps, while they try to hack in half the hind quarters of a lamb, also to offer them to the Virgin later; feeling the vibrations of the drums. You could be chased and even “rammed” by one of the “little bulls” personified by the pilgrims wearing wooden headsets representing a bull.The Headband Bullfight is famous all over the province and its magic transforms the normally silent Puna with the noises, the applause, the shouts, and the singing. The syncretism amalgamates the afternoon: women light candles by the images covered with festive clothes, the men make a hole in the ground in a corral and put coca leaves, wine and food there. They are feeding the Pachamama and asking the earth to be generous at harvest time.

A captivating regionSince Casabindo has no lodgings, you need to get an early start in the morning from the towns in the Quebrada de Humahuaca (Tilcara, Purmamarca, Humahuaca,

Los protagonistas de una jornada de acción son vitoreados desde bien tem-prano por el público que se sienta en torno del escenario principal e incluso, se anima a trepar a los cerros para tener una panorámica de procesiones y torea-das. Locro, humitas, picante de pollo, empanadas y tortas fritas sacian el ape-tito con ventas callejeras. Y en un predio libre, al costado del pueblo, se ubican artesanos y cultivadores exhibiendo sus productos nativos. Pero, para los que se quedan por las sendas aledañas a la plaza, está reserva-da otra vivencia, mucho más cercana y partícipe de la fiesta. Podrán elevar las cintas de colores colocadas en torno a alguna de las imágenes de las vírgenes que saldrán de la iglesia para rezar al sol; observar la danza de pasos firmes que los samilantes realizan mientras inten-tan partir en dos los cuartos traseros de unos corderos, también para ofrendarlos más tarde; percibir la vibración de los tambores y hasta ser perseguidos (y em-bestidos) por los “toritos” personificados por otros peregrinos, con un animal de madera en la cabeza. El Toreo de la Vincha es famoso en toda la provincia y su magia transforma el silen-cio habitual de la Puna en bullicio, aplau-sos, vítores, cánticos. El sincretismo sabe amalgamar la tarde: mientras las mujeres siguen prendiendo velas en torno a las imágenes vestidas de fiesta, los hombres calan un hueco en la tierra de un corral y vierten en él hojas de coca, vino y alimen-

tos. Así, dan de comer a la Pachamama y ruegan por un buen año, en que la tierra les de sus frutos con generosidad.

Una región cautivanteComo Casabindo no cuenta con aloja-mientos, es habitual ir a pasar este día partiendo temprano desde la Quebrada de Humahuaca y sus pueblos (Tilcara, Purmamarca, Humahuaca, Huacalera) y regresar cuando empieza a caer el sol y la fiesta llega a su fin con la coronación de los toreros más avezados.Los caminos, con dos opciones, son igualmente bellos: se puede retomar ha-cia Abra Pampa por la solitaria Puna sal-picada de manadas de vicuñas para luego entrar en la Quebrada; o bien, encarar la ruta de ripio hacia el Paso de Jama, hacer un alto en los petroglifos de Barracas así como en las Salinas Grandes, para final-mente bajar curvas y contracurvas de la Cuesta de Lipán hasta Purmamarca. En cada sitio, tanto de Puna como de la Quebrada, espera abundante belleza na-tural delimitada por los cerros de colores pastel, además de sabiduría cultural y reli-giosa. Si bien los lugares son distintos en el escenario natural, comparten la raíz y eso se nota en la emocionalidad de sus habi-tantes, las costumbres y comidas, así como en la religiosidad manifiesta en capillas de arquitectura colonial, muchas de fines del siglo XVII, hoy en perfecto estado de con-servación y con imágenes, como la de los ángeles arcabuceros, dignas de contemplar como hecho artístico a la par de la fe.

El otoño en la Patagonia es, definitivamente, la estación más colorida del año. Extensos

bosques de lengas, altas y delgadas, ocultan sus verdes intensos para teñir de un calido rojo las bases de las montañas que ya albergan nieve en las cumbres. Atravesamos el lago La Plata luego de soportar un intenso viento que enroscaba las olas salpi-cándonos de frío. Los Andes nos rodeaban por todas partes, es que el extenso espejo de agua se encuentra justo donde la cordillera sufrió un quiebre en su recorrido por Chubut. Al día si-guiente, ya en la orilla opuesta, el lago mostraba su carácter impredecible formando un espejo per-fecto para que las montañas se puedan ver refleja-das. Avanzamos por sus costas y nos internamos en bosques donde ríos y arroyos permitían a un martín pescador volar incansablemente en busca de un lugar donde posarse, antes de una nueva inmersión. Lo seguimos sigilosamente entre cada curva del río, observando como se zambullía para pescar. Al caer la tarde, se había acostumbrado a nuestra presencia y ya teníamos las imágenes que necesitábamos. Regresábamos con la poca luz que se filtraba en-tre los árboles cuando nos sorprendió una fuerte tormenta. El barro complicaba nuestro avance mientras que debíamos cruzar más de una vez cada arroyo para trasladar los equipos. A la ma-ñana siguiente, emprendimos nuestro regreso con un cielo despejado y un lago apaciguado que nos permitió contemplar los últimos días de un otoño intenso y colorido.

Autumn in Patagonia is definitively the most colorful season of the year. Extended

lenga (nothofagus pumilio) woods, high and thin, hide the intense green tainting a warm red the foot of the mountains that are already covered in snow at the top.We traverse lake La Plata after braving an intense wind that curled the wave, splashing there cold on us. The Andes surrounded us. The extended mirror of water is right where the mountain range broke down in its route through Chubut. The following day, on the opposite bank, the lake presented its unpredictable nature, reflecting the mountains. Advancing along the coast, then we entered the woods, where rivers and streams allowed Kingfishers (known locally as Martin Pescador) to fly in search of a place to rest, before jumping again into the water in search o fish. dive. At sunset the birds were already used to our presence and we were able to get the images we wanted.We were returning with the last light when a storm caught up with us. The mud tripped us, while we tried to cross the streams with our equipment. Next morning we started back with a clean sky and the lake flat and smooth, allowing us to contemplate the last days of an intense and colorful autumn.

Así es el universo que el Bioparque Temaikén ha creado para su recién inaugurado “Lugar de las aves” que, en diferentes aviarios inmensos, donde los pájaros se mueven libremente en un hábitat recreado a la medida de sus necesidades de acuerdo a los continentes del que son ori-

ginarios, la gente camina entre todo tipo de especies (más de 2500), puede detenerse a fotografiarlas muy de cerca, o comprender sus comportamientos. Para completar la idea, un Centro de Interpretación –además de los guías exper-tos que acompañan en el recorrido– ayuda a entender los colores de los plumajes, el tipo de picos y actitudes de cada ave. Para capturar este mundo atrapante, hay que estar munido de cámara y ganas de pa-sar horas como buen observador. Además, el resto del bioparque está abierto también para los visitantes de los aviarios, con lo que tigres de belgala, tiburones y suricatas for-man parte del convite al aire libre.

En estos paisajes del norte cordobés se inspira su obra, retratando estos maravillosos lugares en todas las es-taciones del año, como se podrá ver en la exposición que presenta esta primavera. A disciple of Martín Santiago –who was a disciple of Fernando Fader in Córdoba–, Sanzano (49) was born and grew up in Dean Funes, Córdoba, where he still lives.
