THE COMPASSThis humid area located in the northeast of Corrientes province, has more than 60 lagoons besides its rivers and swamps and is the largest natural reservation of the country. Its ecosystem is as rich as diverse: 300 bird species, yacarés, swamp deers, capybaras, boas, and “lobitos de río” among others. The Iberá Lagoon (wich literally means “shining water” in guaraní language) is the right place to catch sight of animals, especially near Colonia Carlos Pellegrini, which is 800 km away from the city of Buenos Aires. Land of gaucho traditions, devotions and legends, the marshes cover 13,000 square kilometres and have mild warm weather with annual rain kept by the lush vegetation ranging from 1200 to 1500 mm.

la brU JU laEste humedal ubicado en el noreste de la provincia de Corrientes, está compues-to por 60 lagunas más arroyos y bañados y es la reserva natural más extensa en el país. su ecosistema plantea tanta riqueza como diversidad: 300 especies de aves, ya-carés, ciervo de los pantanos, carpinchos, boas y lobitos de río, entre otros animales. la laguna iberá (vocablo que, en guaraní, significa “agua que resplandece”) es el sitio indicado para los avistajes, cercana a la Colonia Carlos Pellegrini, distante 800 km de la ciudad de buenos aires. tierra de tra-diciones gauchas, devociones y leyendas, los esteros cubren 13.000 Km2 y poseen un clima templado cálido que les aporta entre 1200 y 1500 mm anuales de lluvia, retenida por su gran masa de vegetación.

No sé cómo encarar estas líneas: cómo buscar una analogía o poner en palabras esta experien-cia. Por eso, decidí contárselos sin preámbulos. Nació mi hija Julieta. Hacía apenas dos días que habíamos enviado a imprenta la edición de mayo de Huéspedes. Era un domingo que ama-necía a puro sol. Teníamos pensado un domingo cualquiera: desayunar en la cama, encontrar un programa shampoo en TV e incumplir una vez más la promesa de ir a comprar el diario. Pero no fue un domingo cualquiera. Llegó Julieta. Nos despertó a las 6. Y el día tuvo más sol que nunca cuando el reloj marcó las 9.50.La felicidad es intensísima. Y ni bien miré a los ojos por primera vez a esta pequeña nueva hués-ped de nuestra casa, me di cuenta de que su va-lijita de vida apenas empieza a llenarse y quisiera que fuera recolectando experiencias maravillosas. Quisiera que transite caminos seguros, que disfrute amaneceres y atardeceres (admito que envidio sanamente su capacidad de asombro in-tacta), que respire hondo rodeada de naturaleza, que adore los animales, que admire el cielo, que aprenda a escuchar historias, que respete a los demás, que sea permeable a las emociones, que viva con alegría. La misma enorme cantidad que ella llegó a darnos en estos poco más de 60 días compartidos. Y al final, encontré una analogía: la valija que estrena Julieta me hace sentir responsa-ble de lo que allí vaya poniendo a lo largo de su vida. No puedo imaginar más que una colección de sonrisas para que guarde dentro. Por eso hoy preciso contarles mi deseo: que todo, absoluta-mente todo, sea, para ella, felicidad.

I do not know how to start these lines: how to find an analogy or how to put this experience into words. So I’ve decided to say it without an introduction. My daughter Julieta was born. Two days before that, we had sent the May edition of Huéspedes

to press. It was a sunny Sunday morning. We had planned for a common Sunday: breakfast in bed, find a shampoo show on TV and once again forget to buy the newspaper. But it was no common Sunday. Julieta came. She awoke us at 6 in the morning. And the day became sunnier than ever when the clock struck 9:50.Happiness is so intense. And as soon as I looked into the eyes of this little new inhabitant of our home, I realized that her life’s little suitcase was just beginning to fill up and that I want her to fill it up with marvelous experiences. I want her to have a safe passage through life, that she enjoy dawns and dusks (I admit I envy her intact capacity to be amazed), I want her to breathe deeply surrounded by nature, and to love animals, to admire the sky, that she learn to listen to stories, I want her to be respectful of others, to be open to emotion, to live happily. I want for her the same enormous amount of joy she has given us in the little more than 60 days we have shared up to now. Finally I found an analogy: Julieta’s new suitcase makes me feel responsible for what she is going to put into it all through her life. I can only imagine a collection of smiles to put there. I need to tell you my wish: I want absolutely everything to be happiness for her.

su condición de eminentemente austral y por tanto, cosmopolita en visitantes y renombre, hay en ella algo local en abso-luto. Así, distingue la ciudad a sus sabores como un sello de identidad fundamental-mente regional. Y los exalta con gusto. Esa intencionalidad la descubre uno al sentarse a la mesa en cualquiera de sus restaurantes, de los más exclusivos a los bodegones, donde no falta la centolla co-mo estrella austral ni tampoco las cazuelas de mariscos o un buen cordero asado a las brazas en cocción lenta.Estas y muchas otras recetas localistas (sin olvidar que lo gourmet también puede recalar en lo que empezó siendo casero)

Despite the feeling that Ushuaia belongs to the world because it

is a southern and cosmopolitan city which is visited and known by people from any country, there is something local about it. people that has come for this festival in the last three years and certainly does not impede to experience new flavours, for example the use of the non-commercial meat of the beaver (abundant in the area) in stews or pates. Homemade beer made in Ushuaia and Patagonia’s wines cheer the evenings. Classics are also included: spider crab, black hake, scallop shells and mussels from the sea and lamb from the land, all of these are used in entrees and main courses sometimes combined with rice or pastas. Also, you can taste the sweets and teas made with herbs and fruits harvested in the end of the world (jam with red fruits and rhubarb just to mention one). To taste the last the Tea House “La Cabaña” in Cumbres del Martial, overlooking the Beagle Channel, is the ideal place. At night: Restaurant Gustino is facing the port and plays chill out music, Los Yámanas and Tante Sara are great options to try the new identity of the southern food.

gas, Jujuy recibió este año a Experiencia 4x4 – Tren a las Nubes – Quebrada de Humahuaca, con una primera etapa que penetró el Parque Nacional Calilegua y sus rutas de tierra y vegetación virgen más complejas y atractivas.Siguiendo los pasos de la caravana se pu-do entender que los vericuetos del Parque no son tarea fácil: se pueden recorrer con vehículos preparados para todo terreno o mediante el trekking, siempre y cuando, el camino lo permita. Sin embargo, para los diez equipos competidores y otras de-cenas más de participantes con mate en mano, chistes por doquier y camionetas 4x4 recién salidas de fábrica, se hace lo que sea posible por atravesarlo, recorrerlo e, in-cluso, llegar a la cima donde se esconde el pueblo de San Francisco.El viaje inicia cuando la base del corredor montañoso abre sus puertas a los primeros rayos del sol y dejan ver la tupida vegeta-ción con el lodo formado después de días lluviosos, que complican el andar por el zig-zagueante suelo de Calilegua. JUJUY. −A province of contrasts, where you find high plateaus, valleys, ravines

and yungas, Jujuy hosted this year a 4WD Experience– Train to the Clouds – Humahuaca Canyon, with a first stage that penetrated Calilegua National Park and its most complex area via dirt track. Following the tracks of the motorcade, it became clear that the rough terrain of the Park is no easy task: it can be travelled across in All-Terrain vehicles or trekked on foot. However, the ten competitor teams and dozens of participants −drinking mate and telling jokes−, will do everything they can to go through it and get to the summit, where the small town of San Francisco hides.The journey begins when the bottom of the corridor of mountains opens up to the first rays of light and the dense vegetation and sludge from rainy days complicating the way on the winding land of Calilegua can be seen. Luckily for the visitors, this is part of the challenge: to surrender to the secrets of the Jujuy landscape; also to achieve not only comradeship and survival, but also the promotion of human values.Throughout the journey, the distinctive texture of the green valley requires a detailed glance, since due to its height, vegetation

mo el yaguareté, el huemul del norte y el lobito de río, tres especies en peligro de extinción. Y en el conjunto de verdes no falta el asombro: uno de los grupos de la travesía debió hacer un alto repentino por-que un lobito se dio al cruce para corretear a una de sus presas. Atónitos, observaron y brindaron por la rapidez del animal.

Por dentro Una vez que se logra arremeter e introdu-cirse en el Parque, se percibe el canto suave de las aves. Pero, sin duda, las camionetas de la travesía irrumpieron en medio de esa serenidad y la que los ciudadanos de San Francisco, uno de los pasos obligados del Parque, tienen por costumbre. El pueblo se esconde entre los cerros de Valle Grande con una población cálida en su atención y alegres por ser partícipes de esta aventura. Es mediodía y el calor húmedo invade a los presentes: mientras los visitantes se despojan de sus abrigos, los lugareños vis-lumbran vastas y coloridas indumentarias. Es que aquí hay que estar preparados para el contraste de temperaturas: durante el día el termómetro marca un promedio de 25º y, en la noche, llega a menos de 10º. Luego de conocer el centro del lugar, donde su brújula es la Capilla de San Francisco de Asís, llega la hora de emprender el trekking hacia las aguas termales del río homónimo. La competencia también sigue su curso. Entre la espesura de la selva, donde no hay senderos, se abren nuevos para dar paso a la prueba de manejo. El trayecto se hace intenso en esfuerzo físico, de resistencia y perseverancia, pero todo está justificado al apreciar el refugio de pureza que brinda la propia yunga. Incluso, la ansiedad en-cuentra aguas donde saciarse: las termas cristalinas dan, ahora, su reconfortante es-

Protected by this ecosystem, there are also animals, such as the jaguar, the deer of the north, and the otter, three endangered species. And there was something that could not go unnoticed to one of the off-road teams: an otter crossed their way going after one of its preys. They watched astounded and cheered the speed of the animal.

From the inside Once the Park has been penetrated, the soft song of birds can be perceived. But, undoubtedly, the off-road vehicles and its passengers have broken into this calmness and into that of the inhabitants of San Francisco. The village hides among the hills of Valle Grande with its kind population, happy to be part of this adventure. It is midday and the humid heat invades everyone there: whereas the visitors take off their coats, the locals wear loose colorful garments. Here you have to be prepared for the contrast of temperatures: during the day the thermometer reads an average of 25º C and, in the night, the temperature drops to less than 10ºC. After visiting the town center, where the starting point is San Francisco de Asís Chappel, it is time to trek towards the thermal spring of the village’s homonymous river. The competition also continues.

pacio para un chapuzón. La noche se hace presente y hay que emprender el regreso. Si la yunga albergaba perfección a plena luz del día, en la oscuridad, las sombras de las lianas colgantes y los sonidos de los animales, no dejan dudas de sus misterios. La vuelta se hace difícil entre el cansan-cio y el frío, pero el premio es acogedor: el pueblo entero participa para agasajar a sus huéspedes con un San Francisco ves-tido de fiesta hasta que las velas arden y es tiempo de descansar. Entonces, cuando todos yacen dormidos, es digno apreciar el silencio, las estrellas, el viento que gira y canta… “La misma noche que hace blan-quear los mismos árboles… Nosotros, los de entonces, ya no somos los mismos…”, versos de Pablo Neruda, ideal resumen de las sensaciones que deja este Noroeste in-tenso a toda hora.

Within the thick jungle, where there are no paths, new ones are cleared through to give way to the competitor’s driving test. The journey becomes intense in physical effort, resistance and perseverance, but all this is worth it just to appreciate the pure refuge the green valley offers. Even anxiety can be quenched into water: now the crystalline thermal spring opens its comforting space for a dip. Night closes in and it is time to head back to the village. Even when the yungas house perfection in the daytime, in the darkness, the shadows of hanging lianas and animal noises are full of mystery. The return trip is hard due to the weariness and the cold, but on arrival, the whole village participates in smothering the guests with attentions. llenas que se pavonean ante él sin temor marcan el dibujo de emplazamiento del Ecocentro Mar Patagonia de Puerto Madryn, un sitio ineludible, recomen-dado para iniciar la aproximación a los diversos habitantes del mar aún antes de haber hecho la navegación junto a las ballenas en Puerto Pirámides o un rato después de haberse asombrado con la proximidad de estos gigantes frente a las playas de canto rodado de El Doradillo, muy cercanas al núcleo urbano. Es en esta suerte de museo y santuario de los animales marinos donde se en-tenderán las claves del ecosistema, el por qué de la llegada puntual de las ballenas temporada tras temporada a estas costas para reproducirse, la forma de vida en comunidad de los pingüinos de Punta Tombo, la soledad de las orcas mar aden-tro, la pasividad aparente de los elefantes marinos echados sobre la arena.

desierto de tierra rajada por la fuerza del sol, cañadones, ríos secos, minas abando-nadas y termas de aguas curativas, se trazó el recorrido de Desert Trail, la segunda etapa del Campeonato Argentino Fiat Adventure. El circuito reúne a más de 200 participan-tes y combina las disciplinas trail running y mountain bike durante un recorrido de más de 150km, en sólo dos días. Fiambalá se encuentra a 320 km al oes-te de San Fernando del Valle Fértil, la capital provincial, y pertenece al distrito de Tinogasta, junto a otros 17 poblados rurales como Saujil, Medanitos,Tatón, Antinaco y Palo Blanco, entre otros. Desde el pueblo se accede a la ruta que se extiende por 198 km y conduce al Paso San Francisco y al límite internacional con Chile. Por sus paisajes imponentes, este pasaje es uno de los lugares elegidos por la organización de la travesía Rally Dakar 2009, que se realizará los próxi-mos13 y 14 de enero.

Desafío en el desiertoDe vuelta en la vorágine de la carrera, la emoción comienza en unos de los paisajes más desafiantes. Un largo y extenuante tramo al rayo del sol por las gigantescas montañas de arena de Saujil invita a los atletas a sumergirse en la inmensidad del desierto. El largo recorrido combina tramos en bicicleta por la Quebrada de la Angostura, pendientes pronunciadas, largos caminos de ripio, y otros donde la dificultad aumenta como en el Cañadón del Indio. Kilómetro a kilómetro el pai-saje cambia, pasa por pueblos rurales y plantaciones de vid secas por el otoño. and from rural towns to vineyards which are dry due to the Autumn. As the day and road go by, tiredness increases though the feeling of weariness is softened by the form of the mountains and the colours of landscape which are a balm for the spirit. The exhausting day ends 12 km away from Fiambalá with a relaxing time in the thermal waters. You can regain your energy in some of the fourteen pools filled with curative water straight from the earth and which are facing the mountains.The best part is to swim in these pools which are filled with water that ranges from 28ºC to 51ºC. The second day of the journey is shorter. Almost breathless and after going 50 km more, competitors arrive to Fiambalá’s main square which also gathers locals.A man sales warm and fresh “tortillas” in a corner. Music is loud; there is a stage with microphones and sound equipment. Children are exited and smile when they see the magnitude of the event and enjoy of an extraordinary day. It is Sunday. It is Father’s day. Competitors arrive, the trophies are given and the whole town cheers.

Los niños están emocionados, y con la sonrisa dibujada se sorprenden con la magnitud del evento, y disfrutan de una día atípico. Es domingo, el del día del padre en la Argentina, los corredores van llegando, alzan sus premios y el pueblo entero aplaude.

Una prenda típica, rectángulo de lana te-jida en telar con vivos de diversos tonos y una abertura para pasar el cuello, le da nombre y origen a una de las fiestas más grandes del país. El poncho es el leit mo-tiv de tanta algarabía en toda Catamarca, en su zona de Puna, sus montañas y su ciudad capital, San Fernando del Valle, donde el Predio Ferial Catamarca alber-gará a más de 700 artesanos mostrando lo que mejor hacen con sus manos. La cita para la Fiesta Nacional e Internacional del Poncho está planteada del 18 al 27 de julio y propone, no sólo la producción de los talleres artesanales, sino también diversos shows musicales con artistas reconocidos, comidas típi-cas para hacerle frente al frío invernal, y otros elementos simbólicos de lo que la tierra da en esta porción de Noroeste: los vinos de altura, el aceite de oliva y la producción agroganadera.La cultura popular se pone en escena y la gente reanima, en esta semana, el folclore provincial en cada municipio. Más de 300 mil personas compartieron el orgullo catamarqueño el año último y las expectativas van por más en ésta, la trigésima octava invitación de la fiesta.

One of the most important celebrations in the country was called after a distinctive garment: a rectangle of wool woven with intense colors and an opening for the head. “Poncho” is the leitmotif of the joy in the whole Catamarca province, in its Puna area, its mountains and its capital city called San Fernando del Valle where Catamarca’s Convention Centre, shelters more than 700 artisans who are eager to show the public the beautiful works they made with their own hands. The dates set for the National and International Celebration of the Poncho are from July 18 to July 27 and it does not only present the work of artisans but also diverse musical shows, typical food to face the winter cold, and other symbolic elements of what earth gives to the people in these lands (such as wine, olive oil, livestock and agriculture). During that week popular culture takes the lead and people come alive under the spell of the provincial folklore in each Town Hall. More than 300 thousand people got together last year to share Catamarca’s pride and, of course, expectations are high for this year in the 38th edition of this celebration.

CARLOS PELLEGRINI, CORRIENTES.- It is mid-morning of a Friday. The sky is covered with

grey clouds and the rain hasn’t stopped since yesterday. The locals receive travelers and share their mate, with steaming water and the taste of local herbs. They amble serenely along the streets of Mercedes: from here there is access to provincial route 40, a well preserved gravel road extending 120 km to the picturesque Carlos Pellegrini, a colony on the banks of the Iberá lagoon, the door to the Iberá Marshes Natural Reservation, the second largest wetlands in the world. The state of the road determines how long it will take to reach our destination: the 4WD truck works its way over the land while the landscape shows the vital signs of the countryside, with waterwheels and rice paddies. brindarán homenaje y concederán un espectáculo imperdible. Las excursiones sobre el suelo rojizo (y aún embarra-do por la humedad del clima) invitan a conectarse con la naturaleza, mientras los safaris en lancha para el avistaje de fauna y flora son de moneda corriente en la laguna Iberá. Las escapadas para remar en ca-noas por las aguas lisas implican, por su parte, un profundo contacto con la vida y la reproducción que retribuye el esfuerzo. La aventura se complementa con caminatas hacia el Centro de Interpretación de la Reserva Natural y luego un recorrido a pie de 3 o 4 km por los senderos de los Monos (pendiendo de las ramas) y del Cerrito. Aquí el safari se disfruta en lancha por las aguas del arroyo Corrientes y del río Miriñay. El recorrido se extiende por 2 o 3 horas junto a Naldo o Sebastián, los guías oriundos de Colonia Pellegrini, quienes mantienen atentos a los turistas durante todo el tra-yecto para que no se pierdan ninguna fotografía. Ellos también relatan que en 1983, cuando se creó la Reserva Natural de Iberá, un puñado de cazadores debieron abandonar su función y a partir de ese mo-mento fueron convocados para desempeñarse como guardaparques, a favor de la fauna. Hoy en día sólo quedan dos de aquellos cazadores-guardaparques y son quienes transmiten a los nuevos guías el cono-cimiento de los valores naturales y culturales, y los compromisos de preservación del ecosistema.La flora brota y cambia, pasa de las tierras flotantes y embalsados al gran palmar de Yatay. Los guías hacen hincapié en las zonas de nidificación, comparten experiencias y alertan sobre la existencia de más vida bajo el agua, cuando entran en acción las palometas, un pez depredador oportunista de la familia de las pirañas, que anda a los mordiscones por el pantano.

El atardecer sobre la laguna regala una paleta de colores rojizos muy intensos, espectaculares para tomar fotografías en su juego de reflejos sobre el agua. Ya de regreso, cae la tarde y desde el muelle con una copa de vino en mano, se estrena una nueva etapa: la noche. El inmenso cielo despejado se tiñe de azul oscuro y se divisan nítidamente la vía láctea, la cruz del sur y varias constelaciones. La luz de las linternas revela la existencia de otras especies que sólo se asoman durante las noches. La flor del maíz del agua se abre y se inaugura el concierto de las ranas maulladoras.

Es un color de moda, ha inspirado no-velas y hasta tiene un film con nom-

bre propio. ¿Por qué no había de existir entonces un Museo del Chocolate? Como homenaje a una historia intensa, Fenoglio, marca tradicional en la elabo-ración de dulzuras en rama, bombones o para tazas humeantes, inauguró junto a su fábrica, en Bariloche, un museo donde se repasan todas las edades de este sabor con material audiovisual, elementos pa-ra molerlo y beberlo y recetas antiguas. Como la clave es la interactividad, tam-bién el recorrido hace agua a la boca al mirar la cocina de Fenoglio en acción. Además de rico, aquí se entiende la com-plejidad del cacao: fue desde alimento de los dioses mayas a moneda de cambio en el pueblo azteca hasta que, por ten-tador, fue prohibido entre los años 1644 y 1772 en Europa. Se lo supo beber en una calabaza hueca en los países de América Central y cuando cesó la prohi-ción entre la alta sociedad, se lo expuso en tazas y chocolateras de plata en el Viejo Continente. En el Museo, también se ad-vierte la relación con grandes personajes históricos: de Colón a los cuáqueros, de Cortés a los chocolattieri italianos y por supuesto, a la familia Fenoglio, orgullo-sos herederos de esa tradición.

Las copas regadas de vino o espumante de la bodega Nieto Senetiner, un original tapeo criollo como comienzo, y delicias gourmet para continuar, completan las exquisitas veladas.

Close to the Riachuelo and across from the Hipólito Yrigoyen train station, on a street from the last years of the XIXth century in Buenos Aires, you will find El Barracas on a special corner, commemorating in gala evenings (with dinner and show) the golden era of tango.
