with the aim of encouraging students

The Cité internationale was created in the pacifist aftermath of World War One and its founding fathers were André Honnorat, the minister for education, and Paul Appell, the rector of the University of Paris. Apart from addressing the accommodation problem, the Cité offers a community living model for students, to which its exceptional architecture and setting, and above all its clear cosmopolitanism, are a testament.

with the City of Paris and thanks
to funding from the Ministry
of Higher Education and Research
as part of the Plan Campus
scheme, the Cité internationale is
going to be able to launch
a development phase focused
on modernity and prepare for its
future.
For the first time in 40 years,
the Cité is going to give new
countries the chance to build
a house. This watershed
in the Cité’s history will be
marked by a particular desire
to build architecturally and
environmentally innovative
buildings. The importance of this
quality-based approach will also
be affirmed by support for the
residents’ cultural and sporting
activities and associations.
Putting an ideal into practice
the project took shape thanks to emile Deutsch de la Meurthe
who funded the first house in 1925. the cité internationale now
has 40 houses* in a 34 hectare parkland setting and is still unique
today. the houses belong to the Universities of Paris, which are
the heirs of the Sorbonne. a private foundation with public uti-
lity status, the cité internationale is headed by Marcel Pochard, a
Senior Member of the council of State. new construction projects
are reaffirming this desire to live together, a desire that is so
characteristic of the cité.
Discover the houses
Free tours give residents the chance to truly discover the site’s
architectural and artistic jewels. the tours are run on the first
Sunday of each month at 2.30pm. the first tour of the academic
year will be on 4 September 2011.
if you want to find out more, two bilingual (french-english)
resources are available: a special cité issue of connaissance des
arts magazine, which is on sale in the university cafeteria and the
library, and architectures paysagées, a book that is available at
the heritage centre.

HOW TO BECOME INVOLVED IN THE LIFE OF THE CITÉ

All residents are invited to take part and become involved in the life of the Cité internationale in order to experience our ethos of living together.
Take part in the running of your house
each house holds elections at the start of the academic year so
that a Committee of Residents can be formed. the committee
takes an active part in the social and cultural life of the house.
two representatives from each house are appointed to form the
Assembly of Committees of Residents’ Representatives (aDcr),
which meets every month with the Director of the General Delega-
tion. in october, the members of the assembly select two resident
administrators who sit on the cité internationale Board.

Get involved in student clubs and associations
∏ The Alliance Internationale is the cité internationale’s associa-
tion for alumni and friends. the alliance runs a range of activities:
reunions for former residents, proofreading theses written in
french, employment advice and les Petits-déjeuners de l’al-
liance (or alliance breakfasts, keynote lectures and discussions
with a prestigious guest) and are free for residents.

∏ an environment representative must be elected from the com-
mittees of residents. the representative will be a member
of PariCité, the residents’ environmental association. Paricité
works in close partnership with the sustainable development
officer to get people to change their everyday habits.

Taking action to create a sustainable Cité
in response to global socioeconomic and environmental issues,
the cité internationale has made sustainable development a core
component of its policy. at the instigation of the committees of
residents, this commitment was made official in 2009 when a
charter (cité Durable or Sustainable cité) was signed, under the
patronage Secretary of State for ecology. the charter is displayed
in each of the houses. We must continue to raise awareness and
take action. Sustainable development means taking responsi-
bility for our decisions and actions.
An exemplary scheme
in the future, all house renovations and extensions will incorporate
sustainable development (green materials, insulation, replacing
windows, dual flow mechanical ventilation system, solar panels
used to heat water etc). residents are invited to get involved in this
dynamic by taking easy everyday steps.
the cité internationale’s grounds are maintained without pesti-
cides and are designed to be a haven of peace for all, please
respect them and visit the beehive that has been set up in the
grounds.

psychologists and a social worker are on hand at the interna-

from 5 September to 10 november, a welcome service run by a multilingual team from a range of departments will be available to deal with student requests. the service
brings together in one place:
OFii - French agency for immigration and integration: issuing a residence permit based on your visa and making an appointment for the compulsory medical examination.
The Préfecture de Police de Paris (Paris Police HQ): renewing residence permits, changes of immigration status and first residence permit
applications.
The Direction Départementale du Travail, de l’emploi et de la Formation Professionnelle (Departmental Work, employment and Vocational Training Department): information sur les information on work permits for students and changes of employment status from student to employee.

The Central Library
the central library houses both classic and contemporary works.
it has general, multidisciplinary and multimedia collections that
focus on french culture and are made up of 60 databases, 50,000
books and 400 periodicals. the library has a Wi-fi network and 22
free access Pcs, a reprographics (printing and copying) and an in-
ter-library loans service. it offers remote access to 60 databases
from the study bedrooms of houses connected to the cité interna-
tionale network.

the esp@ce langues, a self-study centre, offers beginners and
advanced courses in french and over 20 foreign languages (Ger-
man, english, arabic, armenian, Bengali, chinese and Danish, to
name but a few).

The university restaurant offers a blue set menu (starter, dish of
the day or chicken with chips and salad, and dessert) and a red
set menu (a starter or a dessert with a main dish of your choice
which can be a grill, pizza, french or foreign speciality).

a post office provides the main postal services (express package de-
livery service, sale of stamps and stamped envelopes, mobile phone
top-ups for all operators) and financial services.

days and Thursdays from 4-6pm (no appointment necessary).
Banking services
a bank is available and cash machines are accessible seven days

CULTURALLIFE AT THE CITE
SPORTS
Our sports department gives residents the chance to take part in supervised and unsupervised sporting activities and organises the inter-foundation tournament (TiF), a multi-sport competition contested by the residents of each house.
The Cité internationale offers over 1 000 cultural events every year including music, theatre and lectures. Check out the Citéscope listings on ciup.fr to find out more.
Two sports deals
Actisport
Swimming, tennis, weights: this deal enables you to take part in
different sports several times a week. the package also entitles
you to compete in the inter-foundation tournament.
inter U
this deal includes actisport and also enables you to take part
in a supervised activity (yoga, diving, dance, fencing, combat
sports).
reGiSTer: From 5 September 2011 at the Maison Internationale
reception and the swimming pool and at the Espace Sud from
Monday to Friday (check out the opening times on ciup.fr).
TAriFFS:
∏ Actisport: €100 per year, €40 per quarter and €20 per month.
∏ Inter U: €130 a year.

the cité’s arts initiatives are mainly run by the theatre and houses
which organise a large number of events.
The Cité internationale Theatre
the theatre is always on the lookout for new forms of art and show-
cases professional performers who are at the crossroads of various
disciplines (performing arts, visual arts and music). Massimo fUrlan
and fanny De chaillé have a three-year residency at the theatre and
set up a participatory project for the residents each year.
the theatre also has practice rooms that can be used by all
musicians.

The Orchestra and Choir
The Cité internationale Orchestra brings together top class stu-
dent musicians who are being professionally trained and is run
by well-known Parisian musicians. it puts on several concerts a
year: large symphony orchestra classical concerts and contem-
porary works and music.
The Cité internationale Choir is open to all residents and brings
together around 100 singers who perform a varied repertoire,
religious music, opera, popular songs from different countries
and contemporary music.

Following these precautions will enable you to have an uneventful stay and time abroad. You can also check out the Safety Guide on ciup.fr/securite.
Theft or assault: what should you do?
∏ if a mugger tries to grab your bag, do not resist, as you will run the risk of getting
hurt.
∏ if you are the victim of theft or assault, you must go to the nearest police station
to report the crime. if you feel that you are being followed, go into a shop or public
place and ask someone to call the police.
∏ You should also report the incident to the central security unit (known as the poste
centrale) at 27 boulevard Jourdan (vehicle entrance) TÉL : 01 44 16 66 00.
in the grounds
∏ Wear suitable clothing out of respect for others.
∏ avoid walking in unlit or poorly lit areas at night.
∏ Do not forget that the consumption of strong alcohol is strictly forbidden.
in your house
∏ When leaving or entering your house, always check that the outside doors have
closed properly behind you and do not let strangers enter at the same time as you.
∏ always close the door and windows of your study bedroom even if you will only be
out for a few minutes.
∏ for those with ground floor study bedrooms, always close the windows, even when
out for a short time, and especially at night.
∏ in the case of study bedrooms with electronic locking systems, never use an object
to keep the doors in open mode.
∏ if you wish to invite someone to the house, you must submit an application to your
house’s reception (see special rules).
∏ residents are responsible for their guests: you must inform your guests about the
rules in force at the cité internationale so that they too comply with them.
∏ Do not let strangers into the house.
Fire prevention
∏ in the kitchen, do not leave the food that you are preparing unattended.
∏ We advise against smoking and using hobs and stoves, rice cookers or any other
electrical cooking appliance in your study bedroom. each house has designated
areas for cooking and heating up meals.
∏ the installation of incompliant or high energy electrical appliances is forbidden.
∏ the use of several multi-plugs / adaptors on top of each other can constitute a real
danger and may start a fire.
∏ fire extinguishers are safety devices that must be operational in the event of a fire:
respect them so that everyone can stay safe.
Windows
the cité internationale has historic monument status and must respect the relevant
rules for this type of site so as to not lose any of its charm.
∏ nothing must be hung outside from the windows.
∏ for safety reasons, nothing should be placed on the window sills and you should not
throw rubbish out of the windows (cigarette butts and cans, for example).
∏ it is forbidden to sit on the window sills.
Protecting yourself from at-risk behaviour
You should always take your own decisions and not give in to the influence or pressure
exerted by others with regard to alcohol and drug consumption, or sexual harassment
and voyeurism, for example.
extreme alcohol and drug consumption may also lead to sanctions being taken
against you either by the head of your house (expulsion) or by the police.

ratP tickets are valid for a single bus or metro journey in Paris.
they are sold singly or in a book of ten. ratP offers travel passes
such as the carte imagine’r for students under the age of 26.

the main entrance for pedestrians is open from 7am to 10pm at
17 Boulevard Jourdan. the other pedestrian entrance is open 24
hours a day and is located at 7 Boulevard Jourdan.
STAYS On THe iLe De BrÉHAT
Throughout the year residents
can spend a few days in Brittany,
in a house bequeathed by the
poet Edmond Haraucourt.
It is free to stay in the house in
July and August but a charge is
applied from September to June.
Residents only have to cover travel
and living costs.
