Look at life from a Judson Park point of view.

Life just looks better from here. You’ll find few places offering you possibilities for creativity, action and involvement all at one community. Fewer still that offer all levels of living – also at one community. When found together, that’s Judson Park, the sound choice for senior living. Who we are is as much a part of our fabric as what we are:

• Residential living for independent-minded people seeking a strong sense of community

• Short-stay rehabilitation and respite programs – open to the general public through direct admission

• On-site assisted living, memory support and long-term nursing care

• A robust, opportunity-rich lifestyle for those who aspire toward successful aging

• Accredited by CARF-CCAC for meeting strict national standards for quality services – less than one in five communities can say this

Greetings! Welcome to the 2016 edition of the Renton Re-porter’s annul Residents Guide!

My name is Brian Beckley and I am the editor of your local newspaper, the Rent-on Reporter, which proudly covers all the news, features and sports this city has to offer every week.

Located along the south-ern shores of Lake Washington, Renton is a fun diverse city with plenty of business op-portunities, great places

to eat and shop and a whole slew of fun events all through-out the year.

This city has great parks, playgrounds, ballfields and other recreational facilities – like the Henry Moses Aquatic Center – as well as nationally recognized schools and hospi-tals, not to mention one of the largest employers in the Puget Sound Region, Boeing, where Renton workers continue to turn out 737s, the most pop-ular commercial airline in the world, at an amazing rate.

Did you know that every 20 seconds somewhere in the world a 737 – put together right here in North Renton – either takes off or lands? Pretty cool, huh?

Along with Boeing, Renton is home to PACCAR Parts, PACCAR Technology and Kenworth truck factory. We’ve also got a bunch of smaller businesses that are each leaders in their field, like Wizards of the Coast and Fry’s Electronics and Lone Shark Games.

We have a ton of great shopping opportunities as well, from the area’s only IKEA store (currently being re-built as a

new two-story store), to The Landing, where you can find something for everyone, to the downtown core of shops and restaurants to plenty of other great local stores up in the Highlands and other neighbor-hoods.

For sports fans, Renton is the official home of the Seattle Se-ahawks, Seattle Sounders and Seattle Rainmakers and players from each team can often be found at events around town, like the 12th Man rallies that draw hundreds to City Hall every year.

This summer, the Seahawks Training Camp will return to the Virginia Mason Athletic Center in North Renton.

We also have great cultural opportunities, like shows at Renton Civic Theatre and Car-co, and regular performances

from the Renton City Band and Evergreen Ballet. And, once again, Renton will host the Seattle International Film Festival - Renton this year, bringing two weeks of the best movies from around the world right here to our city.

But more importantly, Rent-on is home to great people who take pride in their community and their homes. Nearly 99,000 people from hundreds of cul-tures all around the world live in our city and public partic-ipation is a source of pride in this town, as citizens are always working to make Renton the best it can be.

So get involved! Flip through this guide to see all of the great things going on this year and make your plans now for River Days and the Fabulous Fourth!

I’ll see you there!

City assures residents Renton water supply is safe from leadWith high-pro le stories around the region and the coun-try of lead being found in drink-ing water supplies, including parents of Tacoma and Seattle, Renton o cials are assuring residents that the city’s water supply is safe.

“ e news is good news,” Public Works Administrator Gregg Zimmerman told the City

Council last week. “Renton does not have a problem with excess lead in our water.”Zimmermann was asked by the mayor to provide a report af-ter reports showed high levels of lead in some Tacoma homes and schools and a er Seattle o cials asked residents to run their taps for two minutes a er it had been sitting for more than six hours.Zimmerman said the law requires Renton to test its water supply every year and the city

was always been “well below” the federal action limits of 15 parts per billion.According to Zimmerman, lead in drinking water generally comes not from the source but leached out of pipes, particularly the plumbing in older homes, especially those built before 1986. Drinking water is generally slightly acidic on the pH scale, which has a corrosive e ect if not treated and can leach lead from pipes or even solder con-

necting pipes.Because of that, the city adds a corrosion-control agent to counteract the water’s natural acidity and prevent further cor-rosion.

Federal law also requires the city to take samples from 40-65 pre-1986 homes each year. The most common problem, according to the city’s water-quality report, is with brass or chrome-plated brass faucets and fixtures, which can leach

lead into the water, especially hot water. In Renton, Zimmerman said tests indicate that 90 percent of the city’s water tests between 0 and 3 parts per billion, while the other 10 percent is higher than 3 parts per billion, but as-sured residents it is still “much lower” than the actionable limit.

Earth Day 2016 New garden grows in former crime area

An Earlington Hill resident, with part-nership of key community organizations and the city, is taking a step to cultivate a new kind of atmosphere.Rhoda Green is spearheading the movement to start a community gar-den in the almost half-acre spot west of City View Church that sits at the foot of Earlington Hill on Southwest Langston Avenue. e open green space, currently partly owned by the church and by Seattle City Light, has been an area of concern for residents for years as it has attracted criminal activity. Over the years, Green and members of Earlington Hill Neigh-borhood Association have been working with the city to transform the area by cultivating the bottom half of the hill, installing a gate and erecting a sign. According to a press release, this has dramatically reduced the illegal activity in the area.

Voters in April approved the new Renton Regional Fire Au-thority, combining the Renton Fire Department with King County Fire District No. 25.

When it becomes official on July 1, the fire authority will serve more than 125,000 people over about 50 square miles.

The new Authority will be governed by a six-member board, including three coun-cilmembers and three represen-tatives from FD25. Funding will switch to a combined assessed value and Fire Benefit Charge model.

Led by Fire Chief Mark Peterson, the department pro-vides emergency medical, fire rescue and hazardous-material response. The department coordinates emergency man-agement for the city of Renton, inspects businesses and build-ings for adherence to fire code,

investigates the cause of fires and promotes fire prevention and disaster-preparedness.

Last year, the fire department responded to nearly 15,000 incidents, including fires and

fire investigations, medical emergencies, motor vehicle accidents, hazardous materials responses, water rescues, and specialized technical rescues.

With the vote, a new fire station will be built in the Ken-nydale neighborhood.

Renton is the official home of the Super Bowl XXVIII and reigning NFC West Champion Seattle

Seahawks! The team fell just short of its goal last

year, losing in the NFC Championship game, but with a returning core of players, the Seahawks look to make a run again this year.

The Hawks will begin its 2016 cam-paign in Renton in August, as always, with two weeks worth of practices open to the public.

Fans and Seahawks players interact regularly at the training camp hosted at the Seahawks’ headquarters and practice facility, the Virginia Mason Athletic Center, located at 12 Seahawks Drive in north Renton.

Each practice session has a limited number of seats that fans register for online.

Full practice schedules are usually announced in June, with registration for tickets beginning in July. Tickets are available on a first-come-, first-served basis.

Last year, there was a maximum of four (4) registrants per group, and a limit of four (4) practices per registrant. Fans 15 years or younger must be accompanied by an adult. Only fans

that registered through this site will be allowed to attend practice.

The city of Renton regularly hosts 12th Man rallies at City Hall and addi-tional rallies are hosted each year by The Landing to allow local fans to come out and support their team.

The Seahawks also host special days with kids during training camp and are routinely found at events areound the community.

Visit Seahawks.com for practice schedules and more information.
