A Message from the MayorA Message from the MayorA Message from the MayorIn addition, Auburn is in

the center of a wonderful network of trails, with the Interurban reaching all the way to Seattle and a grow-ing connection to the Foot-hills Trails leading the way to Mount Rainier.

Welcome to Auburn with real neighborhoods, where people still talk to each other, walk down the streets and send genera-tions of children through an outstanding school sys-tem, including our "Little Harvard on the Hill," Green River Community College, a campus built among the trees, nestled high on the hill above us. There are

neighborhoods a hundred years old and others that are brand new with all the amenities of a warm and vibrant community and a wonderful park system that's second to none.

You are welcome in Au-burn, a community of more than 70,000 people who truly believe they live in a small town and whose mot-to includes their core belief for in Auburn we are More Than You Imagined!

Newcomers’ information

Welcome to Auburn, one of the older cities in the re-gion with a big heart and innovative culture.

We are the City of Pa-rades, from our children's Fourth of July Parade to the largest Veteran's Day Parade west of the Missis-sippi. Our Good 01' Days Parade has gone on for more than a century and our Santa Parade lls the streets with children and the air with song as we celebrate and light the city tree.

Welcome to the cultural center for arts and enter-tainment across two coun-ties. We are home to the largest performing arts center in the area, with the state's largest Thorough-bred racing track at Emer-ald Downs on one end of town and the White River Amphitheater on the other. We have a thriving live the-ater in the heart of down-town. Paci c Raceways is not far away, and the Su-perMall is close at hand.

Not to mention the Auburn Municipal Golf Course and the University of Washing-ton's home course, Wash-ington National, just min-utes away from work or home.

Welcome to the transpor-tation center of a region where, in truth, all roads lead to Auburn. We are in the center of the region where all corridors north and south, east and west, pass through our city with commuter trains and ex-press buses already a real-ity here. The Auburn Air-port (Dick Scobee Field) is the third largest commuter airport in the state.

Welcome to the Auburn School District. The district is centrally located between Seattle and Tacoma, at the center of the Green River Valley of South King County. The district encompasses approximately 60 square miles and serves a popula-tion of 70,000 residents. More than 14,600 students attend Auburn’s 22 schools. The district strives for aca-

demic excellence. A broad range of programs provide students opportunities to excel. The district motto, “Engage, Educate, Empower” re-presents the commitment to student success. Our future is promising as

our students have made dra-matic improvement in reading and math proficiency. Also, our schools develop both the

academic skills and charac-ter of our children. Recently, the city of Auburn was desig-nated as an All-American City for its support of third grade literacy in the Auburn School District. Our students are amazing

citizens. Our schools pro-vide the local food bank and blood bank with gen-erous donations to support the needs of the community. Students excel in academics, arts, debate, and leadership activities. Journalism, music, robotics, career and techni-cal, athletics, yearbook and associated student body are examples of programs where students garner state and national recognition.Partnership with

Communities in Schools, City of Auburn, Auburn Youth

Resources, Boys and Girls Clubs, White River Museum, Junior Achievement, and YMCA result in an array of programs where students thrive academically and socially. High school and middle

school career fairs, Reaching Out Fair, and gang preven-tion events foster healthy com-munity actions that build on the strengths of our youth. Parades, Good Ol’ Days, and youth days create a community spirit that nurtures the devel-opment of our children. The Auburn School District

champions its diversity. The richness of the cultures that represent our student body is an asset to student learning. The school board, recognized as a Washington State Board of Distinction, provides stra-

tegic leadership for the con-tinuous improvement of our schools. Our community sup-ports our levies and, recently, a bond for the reconstruction of Auburn High School. Even in the toughest of times, our citizens know that a child’s education is paramount.Dr. Dennis (Kip) Herren,

Annual parade honors veterans

Honoring veterans is an annual tradition in the City of Auburn.

For the past 47 years, the Veterans Day Parade has acknowledged the sacrifices made by American veterans, past and present, with one of the largest processions west of the Mississippi.

The mile-long parade typically lasts about two hours and features march-ing bands, ROTC units, re-enactors, active military units and military vehicles from all eras.

The 48th edition of the tradition will be Nov. 9, 2013 on Main Street.

Above, the Auburn High School band marches in the parade. Right, a Buffalo Soldiers calvary re-enactor rides down Main Street. Lower right, a group of Revolutionary War Minutemen parade by downtown shops. Lower left, a squad of World War I-era re-enactors march in the "Doughboy" garb and, left, a member of the Intertribal Warrior Society bestows a blessing on the proceedings.

Members of a U.S. Army honor color guard march in Auburn’s 47th annual Veterans Day Parade. The event featured more then 200 entries and lasted more than two hours. PHoToS By RAcHeL cIAMPI, Auburn Reporter

BIGGER, GREATER LIBRARYAuburn ushered in its renovated,

expanded public library last September on Auburn Way South. e expansion added 5,000 square feet, most noticeably in the form of a glass-paneled addition that expands into a portion of the parking space on the east side of the building.

King County residents supported a $172 million capital bond in September 2004 to pay for the project and other library expansions and renovations.

AUBURN WELCOMES NEW ANIMAL SHELTERAuburn’s community animal

shelter opened right on sched-ule Jan. 1 at its new home on A Street Southeast.

at means that in addition to the shelter on A Street and Au-burn once again having its own animal control o cer, all pet li-censes are now issued through the City, not King County.

On Dec. 28, the Auburn Valley Humane Society celebrated with an auction and ribbon cutting at

Emerald Downs. e event raised more than

$9,000 for the shelter.Even though the doors are

open, Shelter Director Kelley Durham said there are still needs to be met.

“We mostly need dog and cat food, cat litter, dog toys, cat toys, bleach and stainless steel food bowls,” Durham said. “As for volunteers, we need foster homes, volunteers to answer

phones, dog kennel cleaners and cat condos cleaners.”

In February 2010, Auburn Mayor Pete Lewis, Councilman John Partridge, a community veterinarian and a concerned citizen met to talk about the future of animal care in the Au-burn.

For more than 30 years, the City had contracted the shel-tering of its homeless animals with the services of the re-

gional program provided by King County Animal Control (KCAC).

In 2010, budget shortfalls forced KCAC to change its ser-vice model and shi adminis-trative costs to the participating member cities.

e change produced unsus-tainable costs and resulted in reduced services.
