2013 Renton Residents’ Guide[2]

www.rentonreporter.com [3] 2013 Renton Residents’ Guide

Welcome to Renton, one of the most livable cities in the Puget Sound region.

Located on the southern shore of Lake Washington, Renton is a culturally diverse, business-friendly city providing excellent business opportunities, wonder-ful dining experiences, a variety of shopping options and so much more. We enjoy beautiful, well-maintained parks and recre-ation facilities where families can relax and play, a nationally-rec-ognized public school system for our children, world-class health care services, abundant natural beauty and a rich and diverse cultural heritage.

What makes Renton particularly attractive is affordability, location and a quality of life enhanced by beautiful

parks, safe streets, a growing downtown, and abundant hous-ing options. Urban apartments, downtown condominiums, luxury homes, beautiful multi-family developments along Lake Washington, and quality, affordable single-family subdivi-sions are among housing options available to all income levels.

Looking for something to do? Stroll the Cedar River Trail, visit the Renton Historical Museum, take in breathtaking lake views at Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park, or golf at the Maplewood Golf Course. Are you a movie buff? Join us May 23-29 for the third annual Renton/SIFF Seattle International Film Festival at the Renton IKEA Performing Arts Center. And, if you like fresh produce, home-made foods and gorgeous flowers, you’ll enjoy our Farmers Market every Tues-day during the summer at the downtown Renton Piazza Park.

Renton is home to a number of well-respected and interna-tionally recognized employers, including The Boeing Company Commercial Airplanes and PACCAR Parts and PACCAR Technology. Renton’s friendly, pro-business climate attracts and keeps scores of businesses, including IKEA and Fry’s Electronics stores, Wizards of the Coast, Sam’s Club, Topics Entertainment, and a number of new car dealerships. Renton has also become the home of numer-ous new businesses, such as a state-of-the-art Harley Davidson motorcycle dealership, Uwaji-maya, Marianna Ristorante, and The Berliner Pub, to name a few.

In recent years Renton’s popu-lation has increased significantly, growing from a small working-class town to a wonderfully diverse community of nearly 94,000 people. Renton has an active population that cares

deeply about this community, our schools, our neighborhoods, and the city itself. Public par-ticipation is the cornerstone of society, and Renton is fortunate to have active and compassionate citizens who give their time and talents to make our community a better place for everyone.

And of course, the Seattle Seahawks headquarters and state-of-the-art training facility is located in Renton. If you’re a football fan, the Seattle Sea-hawks annual Training Camp experience draws over 20,000 visitors to Renton every August. Following a spectacular football season, the Seahawks are poised to once again take the team to the playoffs and perhaps beyond, placing Renton squarely on the map as the home of a future Su-per Bowl championship team. To paraphrase Russell Wilson, the new franchise quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks, “Go Renton!”

Renton connected | WIFI

The City of Renton Outdoor Wireless Network (CROWN) is a free, un-managed, unsecure, wireless “Wi-Fi” Internet access for properly equipped laptops, PDAs, and other devices.

The City of Renton owns the largest municipally owned wireless network in the state of Washington, covering approximately 80 percent of its 23.38 square mile incorporated area.

Built primarily for public safety use, the city makes surplus wireless bandwidth available to the citizens of Renton at community centers, fire stations, downtown and in line of sight with one of the city’s base station access points.

This coverage map, at left, shows the location of and coverage provided by these base stations.

The “802.11b or 802.11g” standards are commonly known as “Wi-Fi.” Many laptops come with a wireless interface that maybe b, g, a, or n. Most laptops with built-in wi-fi capabilities should be compatible with the CROWN. Older laptops with a PCMCIA slot or USB port can be retro-fitted with a wireless network interface card (NIC) for about $50 or less.

For technical details and configuration, or for other assistance needs, consult a local retailer or s technical support resource. Coverage will vary depending upon a user’s location within the city.

Cedar River Montessori engages each student’s innatelove of learning to realize potential for academic social,

and emotional growth. Our Early Childhood programbegins at age three. Our Middle School includes 9th grade

with an option to graduate after 8th grade.

Getting aroundFinding a particular location isn’t hard –

if you know how to address the problem. Avenues run north and south. Streets and roads run east and west. Roads labeled “Place,” “Drive” and “Court” are gener-ally offshoots.

For avenues, the numbers get higher as you go east from the City of Renton. For streets, the numbers get higher in a north-to-south direction.

And, of course, there’s the problem of different names for the same road. The county has its naming protocols, usually numbers, and the City of Renton has its protocols. The road names change depend-ing on whether the road is in the city or the county.

Carr Road/Petrovitsky Road is a good example. It’s the main street that runs past Valley Medical Center. On the Valley floor, it’s South 43rd Street. Going up the hill, it turns into Southeast Carr Road, then Southeast Petrovitsky Road – a name

it keeps all the way to Maple Valley. The county calls it Southeast 176th Street.
