Mayor’s LetterSeveral years ago, your city council developed a mission and set of goals that emanated our vision for Covington: Unmatched Qual-ity of Life. That mission statement is: Covington is a destination community where citizens, businesses and civic leaders collaborate to preserve and foster a strong sense of unity.
This mission and our accompanying six goals are the foundation to guide us in making the best possible decisions for our residents. When looking at our vision statement, the statement of what we really want Covington to be, I feel like we are definitely on track to becoming that city.
Whether you are a new resident or a longtime community member, our City welcomes your feedback. It’s easy to contact us by email or phone, and through social media. Visit our website at www.covingtonwa.gov, call us at (253) 480-2400 or like us at www.Facebook.com/Cityof-Covington. If you’d prefer to meet us in person, you are invited to attend a city council meet-ing on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month.
We hope to see you soon.
Warm Regards,
Margaret Harto, Mayor

Take the One LessBag Challenge!Make taking out the trash a little easier with King County’s One Less Bag Challenge. To help reduce the amount of waste headed to Cedar Hills Regional Landfill, King County is asking residents to reduce their garbage by one less bag per month.
Why One Less Bag? More than 60 percent of what ends up in the King County landfill is easily recycled. By taking the challenge, you can help save valuable resources from going to waste and save money on your garbage bill by shrinking your garbage cart size. If we all reduced our garbage by just one bag of recyclables per month, we could collectively keep more than 26 million pounds of material, worth $750,000, out of the landfill.
Here are some tips to help you reduce by one bag of gar-bage a month:
1. Put food scraps and food-soiled paper in your yard waste cart. Begin with your veggie and fruit trimmings or those leftovers that got lost in the back of the fridge. Then move onto meat, fish and bones, plate scrapings, egg shells and coffee grounds. Try to make food scrap recycling a part of your pre-meal prep and after-meal cleanup routine.
2. Discover one new thing that you didn’t know you could re-
cycle and start re-cycling it. Check with your garbage hauler, Republic Services, if you aren’t sure what can and can’t be recycled. Post the guidelines near your recycling bin at home.
3. Don’t let one piece of paper hit the garbage can. Remember all junk mail, envelopes, catalogs, magazines, office and craft paper of all shapes, sizes and colors can go in your recycling cart. Food-soiled paper such as dirty paper napkins, paper towels and pizza delivery boxes go in your yard waste cart. You can reduce junk mail at its source by visiting CatalogChoice.com.
4. Choose one disposable item that you typically use (and usu-ally toss!) at home and switch to a reusable alternative. For example: paper coffee cups, cleaning wipes, plastic storage containers, and shopping bags can all be substituted with a reusable alternative. Recycling is great but stopping waste at the source is even better!
Covington residents that take the One Less Bag Pledge on King County’s website—kingcounty.gov/recyclemore—will be sent a free kit that includes a spatula for hard-to-clean recyclable con-tainers, a recycling guide with fridge magnet, and 10 compostable bags for food scrap and food-soiled paper recycling. Additional free compostable bags are available at Covington City Hall, while supplies last. For Covington’s recycling guidelines, visit republicser-vices.com/site/covington-wa.
By taking the online pledge at king-county.gov/RecycleMore, you can get a
free recycling kit and find ways to recycle more, reuse more and waste less.

Are you prepared? Being prepared can change everything. By planning ahead, you can increase the chances of survival for you and your family, not to mention gain peace of mind knowing you are in control.
Catastrophes can happen at any time. Preparing for three days will help you make it through many of the disasters you’ll face in the Puget Sound region, including major storms and even small earthquakes. However, to make it through a major catastrophe, like Hurricane Katrina or the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, you’ll need to be prepared for longer, at least 7 to 10 days.
Catastrophes can happen at any time and are likely to happen here. Imagine you are at work, on the road, or at home during a catastrophe. How would you com-municate with loved ones? Are you prepared to survive without essential services, such as running water, electricity, or phones for 7 to 10 days?
✔ Make a family emergency communication plan, identify an out-of-state contact✔ Plan for people, pets and property✔ Review and practice your emergency plan
✔ Build a kit for at least 7 to 10 days✔ Save important documents/records on USB drives,
store one at home and one in a safety deposit box✔ Create customized kits for home, office and vehicle
✔ Get involved – Create networks of neighbors and co-workers, work together to pool resources
✔ Participate in a training – CPR, first aid, Community Emergency Response Train-ing (CERT)
✔ Learn how to reduce hazards (e.g. shutting off gas supply if needed, strap water heater in place, etc.)
Build a Kit for at Least 7 to 10 DaysImagine if resources aren’t available for seven or more days. You might have to take care of minor injuries and access to resources will likely be limited. Help your family be better prepared by gathering additional supplies and customizing the list to meet your needs. Once you have the basics, think about items you could use to help yourself and others, or simply improve your comfort.
Identify a storage container or key location to place your survival kit, then gather and store supplies. Supplies include water and food as well as items for shelter and warmth, first aid, communication, personal hygiene and sanitation. It’s possible your home could be damaged and you may have to evacuate; be sure to include a backpack or similar bag so you can pack some of these items to go. Many of these supplies you may already have at home.
Below are suggested basic supplies to survive for 7 to 10 days. ■ Water – one gallon per person per day for drinking
and sanitation■ Food – at least 7 to 10 day supply of non-perishable food
per person■ Cash – ATMs won’t work without electricity■ Battery-powered radio and extra batteries■ Flashlight and extra batteries■ First aid kit■ Whistle to signal for help■ Filter mask or cotton t-shirt to help filter the air■ Moist towelettes for sanitation■ Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities if needed■ Manual can opener for food■ Shelter items like tents, tarps and rope ■ Garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation■ Unique family needs: supplies for infants, pets and elderly, prescriptions,
and important family documents
Local agencies across Puget Sound are teaming up to share information and en-courage residents to prepare for catastrophic events with this regional campaign, What to do to Make it Through.

Purple Light Nights® Shine in Downtown Covington
Since 2006 the Purple Light Nights® campaign (PLN) has been promot-ing Domestic Violence Awareness Month as the community tree, street trees, and residents hang
purple lights for the month of October. The campaign was started by Victoria Throm, founder and director of the Covington Do-mestic Violence Task Force, a non-profit group whose goal is to raise awareness of this issue and provide direct assistance to victims and their families.
The purpose of the PLN campaign is to re-member those who lost their lives to domestic violence; support survivors; and provide hope for those still living with abuse. To date, there are cities in 28 states and three provinces in Canada who have participated in this campaign and it keeps growing!
In October 2013, 30 street trees around city hall were strung with purple lights thanks to the $100 sponsorship from local businesses and residents which promotes a strong message that “Domestic Violence Has No Place in Our Community.” The proceeds from the sale of lights help pay for services to help victims with emergency services such as safe nights in a motel, relocation to another city, or financial assistance for new housing.
We want to thank our amazing tree sponsors who helped make the October 2013 cam-paign possible: MultiCare Covington Medical
Center; Jim and Deb Tanasse; Pastors Kevin and Meg Holland and Steve and Tina Murray from Real Life Church; Steindle & Steindl; Maple Valley Chevron; Valerie and Larry Lyon; Friends of Covington Library; Valley Vehicle Licensing; Covington Police; Clements General Construction; Kiwanis Club of Covington; Timberlane Community; Sena’s Iron Grill; Washington Workwear; Kid to Kid; Rotary Club of Covington; Krista Bates of Covington Chamber; and Covington Holistic Medicine. A special thank you to the City of Covington Parks and Recreation Department and the Public Works Maintenance Team for providing and installing the tree lights on the community tree.
If you are interested in participating in the 2014 Purple Light Nights® campaign contact Victoria Throm at [email protected] or (253) 480-2411.
