We are Hungarian people who just moved to Qingdao in August. My father has a company here, its name is Bella Ciao. They make Italian ice cream in Laoshan in our own factory. My mother also works there. I started learning Mandarin in a language school and I'm planning to apply to the Ocean University. My

sister attends Cambridge Interna-tional School of Qingdao. We really like being here, Qingdao is totally different from our hometown. Our plan is to stay at least 4-5 years. The picture about us was taken at the Beer Festival last summer. Our company was there for the whole time, selling ice cream. It was really successful.

Moving around nations and venturing into new cultures can be exciting, yet truly challenging.

Language barriers and cultural dif-ferences are often things that people face every day when living abroad. Within this scenario, every person seeks a place to call “home away from home”. But how to make life, in a foreign country, comfortable and easy?

Unexpected surprises brought me to believe that I have found one re-markable solution to those who live in Qingdao. In fact, I would risk to name it: Ming.

Ming is a lovely Chinese lady, whose job is to make our lives in China, an easy transition and pleasant journey. Not to mention that her English is excellent. She also has an incredible knowledge of what foreigners like and also dislike. You may be asking yourself, what could Ming do for me? I can assure you: a lot.

I’ve studied Chinese for two years in my home country. After graduating from school, in 2011, I jumped into a new adventure that brought me to Qingdao to live with a Chinese family for one semester, where I acquainted myself with both the language and culture. Even though I can speak the language, there still often arise ques-tions regarding simple things, like or-dering my favourite cereal at Taobao, finding a maid for my apartment or renting a car to travel throughout Shandong. In the midst of my own confusion, Ming turned up. And with her help, I got my apartment organ-ised, my cabinets filled with my and my husband’s favourite goods and less things to worry about.

Ming has worked for some interna-tional families for many years in the past, through which she accumulated loads of experiences and valuable knowledge on the expat needs. She thrives off getting things done; no barriers stand on her path when it comes to understanding her custom-ers. Here’s a list of services she offers

that will make your heart smile:

AYI TRAINING35元 an hour – She trains them on how to clean a house the way the owner appreciates.

AYI SERVICEMing finds professional maids to work at your home, all you have to do is give her your address and tell her what you would like the Ayi to do. All Ming’s Ayis charge 25元 per hour.

HOUSE MAINTENANCEPipes that get old, light bulbs that need to be replaced. Anything your house needs, just call Ming.

TAOBAO ORDERS 10元 per order/product (Price can be discussed in case there are more than two products from the same seller) – She places the order accord-ing to customer’s requests and sends a file through email, outlining her commission, freight cost and pur-chase list. Products are shipped to the customer’s address.

An unexpected surprise called Ming

TAILOR MADE CURTAINSHer business also helps expats pur-chase curtains. Her service includes measuring windows, finding a perfect match or having it tailor made.

SHOPPING GUIDE (for clothes and decoration)From tailor made clothes to shopping at Taidong or Jimo lu, Ming takes you to the best Chinese clothing stores, helps you get good deals and also helps you find decoration items for your house.

CAR RENTALA comfortable car with a driver, that can take you anywhere around Qingdao (including some other places in Shandong). A three-hour rental usually costs around 240元. It’s worth checking what other deals she has to offer.

DINING AT THE RIGHT PLACEFinding traditional, but also reliable Chinese restaurants is not always easy. Ming knows the best places to go and can help you read the menu if there isn’t any English translation.

Y ou’ve just moved to Qin-gdao with your family, or maybe you’ve been living here but just recently had

your first child. Out you go for a nice stroll with your baby, and suddenly every Chinese person around starts talking to you! What are they saying?

Chinese love children, and they love to touch, hold, and talk about them. Never mind that you don’t speak a lick of Chinese! Here are a few of the most common phrases you’ll hear.

Zhēn piào liang! So beautiful! So cute! Doesn’t matter if it’s a boy or girl, to a Chinese, your child is beautiful.

Nán hái ér? Nŭ hái ér? Boy or Girl? Chinese don’t have the same colour associations for children, so even if your angel is wearing a pink bow, you’ll still get this question.

Jĭ suì le? How old is he/she? A few variations are jĭ gè yuè? (how many months?) and duō dà? (how big?)

Tài lěng (太冷) Go on, put five layers on your baby. Doesn’t matter, you’ll still hear this. Chinese children wear up to eight, and don’t be surprised when a total stranger tries to count how many pairs of pants Little One is wearing.

Tā huì găn mào de! She will catch a cold! This usually follows the previous question, as Chi-nese firmly believe a person will get sick from being cold.

Nà me bái (那么白) So white! Chinese are continually amazed at how fair Caucasians are and may even try to compare their own child’s skin tone to their own.

Nà me shòu (那么瘦) So thin. Chinese love fat babies and will gleefully show you how much fatter their baby is than yours.

Wŭ kě yĭ bào tā ma? Can I hold him? If you agree, don’t be surprised when they walk off to show their friends!

Tīng de dŏng zhōngwén ma? Do you understand Chinese? They are delighted when Little One can understand what they are saying.

It’s easy to become frustrated or even angry when every person you pass has an opinion on your child. After living here for six years, I still find my-self agitated by all of their questions! Try to remember, asking questions and giving their opinion is their way of showing interest in you and your culture. It’s up to you how many questions you answer, but smile, nod and go on your way. Or, if you want to make a friend, return the favor and ask them about their own children!

WhAt ARe theY sAYING?ruth Greene shows you how adoring Chinese people can

be about children and how they say it in their language.

Ruth

Healthy and Green Spring Cleaning tips

Jen Gallogly teaches you how to make your own cleaning products from items that are already in your kitchen or medicine cabinet.

A s the weather warms up and we throw open the windows to enjoy the, hopefully, fresh air. It is also the time when most westerners do a thorough spring clean. unfortunately that often means reaching for harsh chemicals

that aren’t good for our families or the environment, but there is another way.

All-PuRPOSE ClEANER

• 1 cup white vinegar • 1 cup rubbing alcohol (91% isopropyl

alcohol) or ethyl alcohol• 3 cups water

Combine and put in a spray bottle.

FuRNITuRE POlISh

• 1 Tablespoon/25ml oil (vegetable or olive)

• 1 Tablespoon/25ml lemon juice

Apply with a soft cloth and then immediately wipe off with a separate cloth.

HEALTH & FITNESS

GREASE ClEANER

• 2 cups Borax (sodium borate)• 1/2 cup white vinegar• 1 cup rubbing alcohol (91% isopropyl alcohol) or ethyl

alcohol

Pour some borax on the grease spot, then add some vin-egar and allow it to bubble. Scrub for two minutes, then add some rubbing alcohol and continue scrubbing.

WAShING MAChINE ClEANER

• 2 cups white vinegar

Place the vinegar in the washing machine and run it at the hottest possible setting.

OVEN ClEANER

• 1 cup baking soda / Water

Combine to make a paste. Spread it onto the bottom of your oven and let it sit overnight. In the morning, wipe off the dried pieces and then use a little dish detergent to wash the rest of the spots. This may take more than one application, but I think it’s worth it to not have the awful chemical smell of most oven cleaners.

WINdOW ClEANER

• 1 cup white vinegar / 3 cups water

Pour ingredients into a spray bottle and shake to combine. Spray onto glass and wipe off using crumpled up newspaper or cleaning rags made from an old cotton t-shirt.

Babies are cute. Sometimes they are so cute that it's difficult not to touch them. Jennifer Raskin talks about setting some personal space boundaries for your baby.

As my due date for my second child rapidly approaches, I think about all the joys of having a

new baby. When you look into your baby’s eyes for the first time and hold him or her tight to your chest, it’s truly a magical experience. I’m so excited to look at the face of the little person who has been kicking me all this time. But as delighted as I am to enjoy these things once again, there’s one thing I, as a foreigner in China, am not looking forward to: how everyone in China wants to touch the new baby.

When my daughter was just an in-fant, we went out into the world with

her right away, which is considered odd by Chinese people. Naturally, people were extremely curious about her. They wanted to look at and touch her. The looking I didn’t mind, but the touching I certainly did. As a new mum, I was terrified of this practice because all I could think of were germs. In America, we are very aware of how germs can be passed around. We wash our hands often, especially if we expect to touch or hold a new baby. In China, people here genuinely seem so overjoyed about the presence of babies. But for foreigners, this is worrisome because we want to protect our small babies from illnesses.

My Chinese husband was constantly stuck in the middle. Indeed, he wanted to prevent our daughter from getting sick but he also was well aware of his Chinese culture. As he explained to me, many Chinese people, particu-larly the older generations, find that to touch a baby (foreign or Chinese) is good luck for them. Some even believe it will give them beauty. He felt rude refusing people but he also knew it was better to be rude to a stranger than to be stuck with a sick child.  So what can be done about this conundrum? Well, if you’re a foreign-er like me, prepare yourself for the hoards of people that will surround

HEALTH & FITNESS

you to get a look at and try to touch your baby. You do not have to let them touch your child, but smile warmly and say something polite like, “Ni keyi kan kan danshi qing bie dong wode bao bao.” That means, “You can look but please do not touch my baby.” And if you’re Chinese, please remem-ber that germs can spread easily and small babies are very susceptible to them. If you are curious about a foreigner’s baby, ask politely to see or touch the baby. Also, make sure the baby isn’t sleeping. Some foreigners become annoyed when people crowd around making noise after the baby has just fallen asleep only to be wo-ken up again. For all parties involved, just remember that a big smile and a dose of politeness can go a long way to help us understand and share each other’s cultures.

I wanted to see what Chinese people thought about this subject so with the help of my husband, I asked a few of them. Here’s what they said:

“I feel it’s impolite to touch baby’s face. Foreign people al-ways give a com-pliment but do not touch the baby with hands. On the con-trary, Chinese people simply think it’s a good way to express their love through touch whether it’s the baby’s hands or face.” – Sun Jiameng (32 years old)

“Older people do this but the younger generations mostly do not approve of touching a baby’s face with dirty hands. It’s unacceptable. But it’s ac-ceptable to shake a baby’s hands or make a funny face at the baby.”

– Zhouting (26 years old)

“I think people should ask the parent before trying to touch the baby.”

– Jiang Shiqun (40 years old)

See how Maximilian and Venessa adapted themselves to Chinese culture and life as interns in Qingdao.

I'm Maximilian, a student from Germany. I applied for an intern-ship in China and wanted to stay with a Chinese family during

that time because I thought this is the best way to learn about the life and culture of Chinese people. Intern-shipworld.org, a Chinese agency arranged everything for me in Qing-dao, which host family I will stay with and where I work. They took charge of me as soon as I arrived in Qingd-ao, so I never felt helpless or lost.

My usual day starts with working from morning until lunchtime for a huge architecture company with branch offices all over China. After having lunch with my colleagues and having a rest I go to the agency to learn the Chinese language in the af-ternoon. I have private lessons, which probably is the most effective way to learn a language. In the evening I do my homework, which consists of writing Chinese characters. I can also practice what I have learned with my Chinese family. Sometimes there

are dinner parties with friends of my Chinese family in the evening and there is always plenty of different Chinese food.

In my free time on the weekend, my host father takes me around Qingd-ao to see many sights and places of interest. I go to play football with my little Chinese brother, as well or we play other games. Although my host mother is very busy, she organizes everything for me. So together, they make sure, that I never feel bored or hungry.

My time in China is really great and I have met a lot of nice people and made many new friends and I have also learned about myself. So I can only recommend this to any oth-er who wants to do an internship abroad.".

Hi, I am venessa, from Germany. I had a won-derful internship time in Qingdao for half a year.

I appreciate every warm-hearted person, especially my host family and my agency Qingdao Internship-world.org who arranged everything in Qingdao.

In the beginning, I was unprepared for everything, the new environ-ment, different food, language barrier, traffic jam, etc. But, well, my host family was very nice, they took me to the seaside, we traveled to the May Fourth Square, Badaguan, and Laoshan Mountain. I think these trips were so extraordinary, not only did I know more about Qingdao but also I felt completely relaxed. Also, I tasted so many delicious Chi-nese food and learned how to make dumplings, even now, I have cooked several times for my parents, they were amazed how I could make them so pretty.

Afterwards, I gradually adjusted to Qingdao, and never felt home-sick. After one month, I could use simple Chinese to chat with my host family. It was very helpful for our better communication. Also, my host family learned lots of German and English.

I worked in one international trade company in the morning, and stud-ied Chinese in my internship agency.

Half a year later, I could write down more than 700 Chinese characters.I hope to go to Qingdao again, to visit my host family, the members of the agency Qingdao Internship-world.org, and my lovely colleagues. Thanks again, I miss all of you.

Abilene really loved him, and even made a pocket watch for him, but the arrogant china rabbit doll, Edward Tulane, was deceived by his pride. ‘Unfortunately’ when Edward was riding a ship, he fell into the ocean. He lost his clothes, pocket watch, and love. Edward Tulane traveled through different owners, where he was hated and loved. On this miraculous journey, he learns what love is. Where will Edward end up? Will Edward learn how to love? The number of the expats in Qingdao is ranked the third largest in China; inevitably, many expats children have

to seek education in Qingdao. What are the best options for them?

FOREIGN SChOOlSSuch as Korean children go to Kore-an Schools, Japanese children go to Japanese Schools. Considering the large Korean and Japanese popula-tion in Qingdao, there are some Ko-rean and Japanese Schools opened specially in Qingdao by Korean and Japanese citizens in order to give their children a native education, but this doesn’t seem to happen for other

nationalities. This type of educa-tion is aimed at children who will go back to their own country for higher education. The tuition ranges from 20,000-50,000RMB.

ChINESE PuBlIC SChOOlSA lot of expats believe that since they are in China, it is a great opportunity for their children to immerse them-selves in Chinese society to better experience the real Chinese culture. In this case going to public schools will be their best choice. But this option obviously will not be in line with western education. The tuition ranges from 0-10,000RMB.

INTERNATIONAl SChOOlSInternational school here means the type of school, which is run by expats, and only enrolls for-eign children. Some examples are Yew Chung International School of Qingdao, MTI and Qingdao No.1 International School Of Shandong Province. Many expat children find it extremely difficult to adapt to the way of teaching and management in Chinese schools, so its a better option for them to go to international schools, this will be of benefit to both the parents and the children. How-ever, being in this type of school will not help children acquire an appre-ciation of Chinese culture. The tuition

ThE ChINESE MANAGEd INTERNATIONAl SChOOlS These schools enroll both Chinese and foreign children and they are normally called Bilingual Schools, but there is a large difference be-tween all of these schools and it can-not be known just from the school’s name.

The first kind are the international schools who teach the students a foreign curriculum, such as Malvern, the International Department of Guokai School (K-12), Confucius In-ternational School (High School) and so on. These Schools have a foreign curriculum taught by Westerners, but also offer some Chinese classes as well. This may be the best of both worlds. Because foreigners teach the classes, foreign students will be better able to adapt to the style of the classes taught, and when they return to their home country they can be more competitive for know-ing Chinese culture and Western education. Last year only two foreign students in Qingdao were accepted as students of Tsinghua University, they were graduates of the Interna-tional Department of Guokai School. The tuition ranges from 40,000-100,000RMB.

The second kind is an International School, which mainly offers a Chi-nese curriculum, such as Qingdao Baishan School and Qingdao Grand High School; these kinds of School offer a Chinese curriculum, whilst adding English classes taught by foreign teachers. The tuition ranges from 20,000-40,000RMB.

The third kind of International School is a school, which calls itself bilin-gual, but in fact only has a Chinese curriculum adding in a few phonetics class taught by foreigners. The tuition ranges from 10,000-20,000RMB.

For foreigners traveling to China for the first time, please make a well-in-formed decision.

Foreign students will be better able to adapt to the style of the

classes taught by foreign teachers, and when they return to their home country they can be more competitive for knowing Chinese culture and western education.

When I think of Yun-nan I immediately think of the colours; the vibrant colours of

the ethnic minority fabrics, the faded yet contrasting colours of the prayer flags, and the bright green forests and grasslands against a backdrop of a bluer than blue sky dotted with crisp white clouds. The Thorpe family Yunnan adventure was born of our desire to see a bit more of China before our yearly pil-grimage back to Canada to visit fam-ily and friends. Not knowing much

about it, but hearing rave reviews by others who had been before us, we decided on Yunnan and discovered a part of China that we undeniably fell in love with.

DaliOur adventure began mid-June in Dali where we stayed at the Sleepy Fish Lodge, a lovely family-run guesthouse in a quiet location well worth considering. They have bikes for hire, including baby seats, which we took full advantage of to see some of the beautiful countryside in and

around Dali. When we weren’t cycling through fields of spring onions or around Erhai Lake we enjoyed the re-laxed backpacker vibe around Huguo Lu, known affectionately by locals as Foreigners Street. This part of town is chock-full of funky cafes and unique shops, which give it a very laidback, hip, feel. The top tourist attraction and the symbol of Dali are the three pagodas a few kilometers outside of town. Considering you cannot enter the actual pagodas we took the advice of our hostel owner and did not pay the overpriced entry fee

and only viewed the pagodas from a distance. We also took a day trip to the cable car at Cangshan (Mount Cang), a range of stunning mountain peaks rising majestically over Dali. Here there are many family friendly hikes and picturesque lookouts where you can while away a day wander-ing around the beautiful mountain scenery.

Shangri laAfter enjoying a few laid back days in Dali it was time to move on. As Shangri La was a last minute add on to our itinerary (we had already booked our flights into Dali and out of Lijiang) we had to take a very long and winding 8 hour bus ride to get there, not something I would nec-essarily recommend with a 2 and 4 year old in tow, but from the moment we arrived we knew it was well worth it. At an elevation of 3200 meters it has a wonderful Tibetan feel and it immediately felt like no other place we had ever visited in China. January, was a wonderful labyrinth of cobbled lanes jam packed with rickety wooden Tibetan style buildings leading out from a charming main square. Although it is truly a tragedy that

this part of town has been destroyed, thankfully there are still many rea-sons to visit Shangri La. Although the altitude may slow you down a bit, the county side is stunningly beautiful and well worth a leisurely hike or cycle, of which we did both.

The must-see in Shangri La is the Ganden Sumtseling Gompa, a 300 year old Tibetan monastery complex located a few kilometers from the old town and easily accessible by bus. The climb up the few hundred stairs to the monastery will leave you breathless, not only from the altitude but from the beauty of the monastery itself, with the gold gilded roofs of the Tibetan style temples glistening in the sun. If you are travelling with children they will love the numerous prayer wheels dotted around town, and they will especially enjoy the challenge of trying to turn the massive golden prayer wheel located in the center of town (which managed to survive the fire). I would also recommend the not too strenuous hike up to the Chicken Temple, whose strings and strings

of colourful prayer flags flutter in the wind and afford a spectacular view over the town. In Shangri La we chose to stay in the highly recommended Tavern 47 hostel (I’ve been told it is one of the few buildings to have sur-vived the fire), a Tibetan style wooden house whose Yak burger is legendary, especially when washed down with a local Shangri La craft brewed beer.

lijiang Much to our dismay our time in Shangri La came to an end far too quickly and it was time to leave. A far less exhausting 4-hour bus ride took us the gates of the old town in Lijiang where we wandered the maze of cobbled stone lanes in search of our next guesthouse. We opted to stay at Mama Naxi’s, a basic accommoda-tion owned by the renowned Mama herself. A helpful, no-nonsense woman she is well versed in assisting travelers. The guesthouse is conve-niently located in the heart of the old town and rooms are basic but clean. A plethora of choices available in the old town make it easy for you to find whatever type of accommodation you seek.

Unfortunately Lijiang itself has a slight feel of having sold its proverbi-al soul to the tourist devil, so it is not

surprising that UNESCO has threat-ened to delist the Lijiang old town due to its over development. The wooden buildings and cobbled streets have wonderful potential but are teeming with shop after shop selling the same mass produced trinkets and oddly enough, drums. The main parts of the old town feel hectic and commer-cial but if you escape off the beaten track and lose yourself amongst the many twisty lanes you will come across unique shops and cafes and a far more relaxed feel. Amidst the old town there are also some sights well worth seeing. The Mu Family Mansion is the former home of a Naxi Chieftain and leisurely wandering around this complex is a nice reprieve from the chaos of the old town. The family friendly hike up Lion Hill to the Looking-at-the-past Pavilion is also well worth your while to escape the crowds and have a birds-eye view over the jumbled mass of wooden shingled roofs that make up the old town.

All in all we thoroughly loved our time in these differing parts of Yunnan. It is a bit like comparing apples and oranges when trying to decide which place we liked best but know that whatever you are looking for, you are sure to find it in Yunnan.

When I became preg-nant with my first child, in addition to going through

the typical elation that comes with finding out you’ll be someone’s par-ent, my husband and I discussed how we would raise our child. We thought about the long–term rules and routines, colleges and those sorts of things. But we would have been remiss if we didn’t consider what was right around the bend. How would we feed and care for this precious baby?

I wanted to breastfeed and although my husband didn’t initially under-stand it, he soon became my biggest supporter. Of course, I had no idea how to breastfeed so I decided to do my homework. That’s how I found out about La Leche League (LLL). Once upon a time, LLL meetings were hosted right here in Qingdao. That’s how I met Valerie Wiens, Internation-al Board Certified Lactation Consul-tant (IBCLC) and La Leche League leader. I learned so much from her

and found support with other breast-feeding mums. Once my daughter was born, I had all the information I needed to give her the best beginning to her life. It is my hope that I can help spread the facts about breastfeeding to other soon-to-be mums out there so they can breastfeed too.

Although Wiens moved back to the US in 2013, she is always hoping to help encourage new mums to breast-feed.

Most people having a baby in a Chinese hospital will feel there

is far less support and understanding about breastfeeding. Most mothers will experience a large amount of pressure to formula feed in the hos-pital. this is true for foreign mothers and even more true for Chinese. still, the general attitude in China is pro-breastfeeding. In contrast to the west almost all Chinese women plan to breastfeed. Breastfeeding in public is much more acceptable in China than in the west. since the

2008 formula scandal breastfeed-ing has been promoted. For most, formula feeding is not seen so much as a “choice” and women only plan to use it if they have to. still with a lack of medically sound support, unethi-cal marketing, and abundant family pressure few manage to exclusively breastfeed and wean long before they hoped to.” - valerie Wiens

So how do you go about breastfeed-ing if you don’t know what to do? For starters, you can visit the LLL web-site (www.llli.org) which is in English and Chinese, as well as many other languages. On there, you can find the answers to your questions, forums filled with other mums who will sup-port you through your breastfeeding journey, podcasts, magazines and more. And speaking of support, one of the best things you can do is reach out to other breastfeeding mums. Even though there are no longer any monthly LLL meetings held in Qingdao, you can build your own support system. For me, I also relied

Breastfeeding was something I was committed to doing,

even if it came with challenges. With support from my husband and local La Leche League, I was able to overcome my challenges and have a successful breastfeeding journey with both my children. Along with the amazing physical and emotional bond that you create with your infant or toddler, breastfeeding comes with all the possible nutrients that children need to grow and thrive. Breast milk cannot be duplicated or manufactured, and

it's exactly what nature created to sustain life. My children have gotten all the nourishment they need from breast milk to properly develop their minds and bodies. As a doula and mother, I encourage every expecting mother to educate themselves on how to set them up for success in breastfeeding. on a network of my own personal friends back in America who I could email and chat with whenever I was having difficulties. One such friend was Chrystal Hunsberger.

I never knew anything about breastfeeding until I was 6

months pregnant with my first child. I assumed I would formula feed because that's all I'd ever seen and known. It wasn't until someone asked; "You're planning on breast-feeding, right?" that I even gave it a thought. the more research I did, the more upset I was at how in-the-dark I had been. no one had ever told me how incredible breast milk is for a developing infant. or that breast-feeding while you're sick actually helps with your child's immunity. also, I never knew how quickly I'd burn calories and drop pregnancy weight. honestly, to me, the best

part is all those sweet memories I have of my children’s faces staring up at me while nursing, touching my nose or eyes, while we'd sit in a cozy, quiet corner somewhere away from all the bustle. they were always instantly comforted, and I think that type of security they feel is just as important as the nutrition they're getting.” - Chrystal hunsberger

My friends, family and my husband all helped me during this incredible journey. My beautiful daughter finally finished weaning from breastfeeding one month before she turned three. It was the best decision of my life, one that gave us a bond that we will always share. If you are about to become a mom and are reading this, I hope you will explore LLL’s resources online so you can give your child the best beginning of all.

A lthough I like to think of myself as a good listener sometimes my daughter tells

me that I don’t listen to her. Actually it turns out that we have different ideas on the definition of listening.

She thinks that listening means not only hearing what she says and understanding and even empathizing with her thoughts, but also, for her, listening means DOING what she says. For example if we are getting ready for bed and she says she wants an ice cream, proper listening would be to go directly and get her an ice cream without further discussion. Saying that ice creams are really yummy and nice to eat is not what she would call effective listening skills.

My idea of effective listening, on the other hand, hopefully encourages her to be more emotionally mature, more open to her own experiences, less defensive, more democratic and less authoritarian. Those are a lot of skills to come out of just listening. Passive listening is not enough to bring about a change in someone. Instead, what I try my best to do and try by best to

teach other parents to do in Parent Effectiveness Training workshops is to use Active Listening with their children.

Active Listening, a term coined by Thomas Gordon in in 1950’s, is the skill of reflecting back meaning and feelings used in counseling, training and conflict resolution. There are some important components to using Active Listening.

lISTEN FOR ThE TOTAl MEANINGThere are two parts to what another person is telling you, the content and the feelings. The emotion behind what people are saying to you together with what they say can give you a better idea of their intended message.

When my daughter said, “I want ice cream.” I was fairly sure she was feeling hungry.

RESPONd TO FEElINGSSometimes the feeling is more important than the actual content. In my example, knowing that she was

feeling hungry was important because I could eventually lead her to choose a more acceptable pre-bedtime snack.

NOTE All CuESNot all communication is verbal. Facial expressions, posture, breathing; all help convey the total message. If your daughter is holding her stomach and has an expression of being famished on her face as she tells you she wants ice cream, those are some pretty strong clues to her immediate need.

Why do I bother using these listening skills when my daughter clearly thinks I am not an effective listener? Well, she is only four years old and I do not expect her to appreciate the skills I am trying, to model for her quite yet. I am thinking of the bigger picture, I want her to listen to me. Not by her definition of listening, blindly following orders, but by my definition, hearing and respecting what other say.

If you really want to be heard by someone you have to develop that person to listen to you sincerely and with respect and understanding. With our children we have such a wonderful opportunity to give them the gift of listening.

她所说的,还要理解甚至强调她的想法;

DIY Underwater viewer

Jen Gallogly and her son teach you how to make an underwater Viewer in only 5 steps with 3 items.

ARTS & CULTURE ARTS & CULTURE

MATERIALS • pringles (or other similar

cardboard canister with a clear plastic lid and a metal bottom that can be removed)

• Clear Wide tape

• scissors

This project is so easy you can make it at the beach.

1. Remove the plastic lid and the seal. (Keep the plastic lid and dispose of the seal in the garbage).

2. Eat the chips (which is the most fun part of making the viewer).

3. Cut the metal bottom off the canister.

4. Tape the lid onto the top.5. We also covered the entire outside

of the canister in tape to make it more water proof.

Use your underwater viewer by putting the clear lid end into the water and begin looking for sea creatures. I found the idea on the website www.survivaltek.com and suggest that you can even use it to look for lost keys or other items.
