The 2010-2011 academic year is upon us!

New schools are opening in Qingdao, established schools are moving into new facilities, and a fresh stock of educators are taking the reins in the classroom. Meanwhile, parents are faced anew with the question of what learning environment will be most appropriate for their child. We at Redstar hope that this edition will help guide you as you make this important decision.

When it comes to living and learning, Qingdao is certainly one of Asia’s best locations. The diversity of education options available to a population of perhaps 4,000 Western foreigners is unmatched. Whether following the National Curriculum for England and IGCSE route (YCIS and Oxford College) or taking SATs and AP classes (ISQ, QISS, NSWE, QAIS), families can choose the school site and faculty that they feel is right.

In Qingdao, too, there are a host of learning opportunities that extend beyond the walls of the classroom. Sailing is finally beginning to move out from the city’s nickname into the local lifestyle, with lessons available at the marinas. Many schools offer intensive Chinese language programmes, and students from English-oriented households are likely to pick up at least a bit of Korean along the way! It’s simply remarkably easy to get involved here.

To prepare this edition, Redstar contacted all of Qingdao’s international schools, including kindergartens, and asked them to provide tuition, demographic and curriculum information. If a school is not included in this volume, it does not reflect our opinion of their programmes - it means merely that regrettably, albeit for their own reasons, they did not provide this information to us.

Every month, Redstar Magazine combines our years of experience in creative design with our love for Qingdao to bring readers the very best that this city has to offer in entertainment, lifestyle and cultural destinations.

“Almost four years ago we decided to move to Qingdao because my husband was offered a job at Mærsk Container Industries. Coming from a small protected country like Denmark, everything was new for us and our 3 small girls. Very early we found out that the best thing we could do for our kids was to help them get some new friends by letting them start school. That way we could try to make the transition a little easier. We wanted them to have a place they could get familiar with, and where they could feel safe and happy. We knew some other Danish Mærsk families who had kids and they all recommended the International School of Qingdao (MTI).

“But before we chose a school, we wanted to see them for ourselves. So we went to the various international schools and checked them out. Some schools were small, some were new, some seemed to have a high professional and educational level, and some schools were less organized. When we went to an interview at ISQ, we first had to go through a bumpy and muddy road. But then we entered a very beautiful and protected campus that seemed to have a really nice atmosphere. We brought our 2 oldest girls, at that time 4 and 6 years old, and had a very positive conversation with the elementary principal and the educational counselor.

“What we fell for was the openness and the warm greetings we got. We felt that this was a school that had a lot of teaching experience, had devoted teachers who stay 2 - 4 years at the school, and who seemed to be very engaged in their jobs.

“Of course it is not always easy to get a 100% knowledge of what you choose, and not everyone has the same ideas of what is good and bad. You need to make your own experiences. But after the interview my husband and I both had a good feeling about the school. We had some issues that we felt were different from our own country, for example, the teaching from a historical Christian worldview. Denmark and most parts of Scandinavia and Europe look at this aspect with more liberal eyes and are not used to approaching biblical issues like they do at the school. But what we found out was very unique about the school was that they, due to their ways of looking upon life, had a very embracing, understanding and flexible attitude to our kids. Every child is unique and the school has a strong wish to fulfill each child’s special needs. They have a lot of experience and know how to approach kids that come from other countries and are dealing with transition issues.”

To the TestAdvanced Placement, or International Baccalaureate?

Debbie-Sue Blanks

International School Qingdao (ISQ) is a college preparatory school accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Collages (WASC). As the first licensed international school in Qingdao (as Qingdao MTI International School), ISQ has had the time to develop a rich curriculum and a strong identity of who we are. The high school academic programme is structured towards fulfilling course requirements that prepare students to meet the standards of universities throughout the world. This is true of many international schools, but what sets ISQ apart from most schools is that we offer a curriculum that includes the high standards of the world-recognised Advanced Placement (AP) programme and is highly responsive to meeting 21st Century skills.

When I first became the high school principal, I was given permission by the school board to research various programmes including the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme. I invited the China IB representative to our school to discuss the possibility and began the paper work to become an IB school. I have always been passionate about providing quality education to our students and if the IB programme would do this, then I was determined we should go in that direction.

What I discovered was that the IB programme is an excellent education model, specifically for the high school diploma programme, but it lacks versatility. This programme comes with a ready-made curriculum that is perfect for schools

11schools•isq

that lack the ability to develop their own. Metaphorically speaking it’s the difference between using a Betty Crocker cake mix and baking from scratch. We all know that if you’re a good baker, nothing beats home made. For schools starting out and for those that lack experienced staff or the ability to employ curriculum developers, IB is a great answer. For established schools the reasons to switch to the IB programme are primarily marketing related. It is distressing to see good schools with great programmes make this shift because they want to attract families who perceive the IB programme to be a curriculum panacea. For a school that is already humming with well-qualified, passionate teachers who live to make the curriculum lively and relevant, IB has little to offer beyond its name recognition.

I am pleased and proud to say that we made the decision to go with our own curriculum and integrate it with the AP programme instead. This combination allows us the flexibility to respond immediately to the changing world around us while maintaining university recognised standards. At ISQ we offer core courses that are basic to a great curriculum, after which students are able to choose AP courses and enrichment courses to complete their diploma requirements. AP courses are university level courses that are taught by College Board approved teachers, and students are evaluated according to external standardised exams. These courses are recognised by colleges and universities in North America and throughout the world. Students who score well on their exams usually receive university credit at American universities. If a student already knows what direction they plan to take at university, they can chose AP courses that will help them enter a course of study.

AP courses are highly academic, but the key to this model is that students are able to choose from a variety of courses not only AP courses. For example, over the last 5 years we have developed a strong journalism curriculum. We

offer a rigorous journalism course where students learn to investigate stories, interview people, write unbiased reports, edit articles, design newspaper layouts, etc. Last year we expanded this curriculum to include broadcast journalism in which students learn video journalism and produce bi-weekly news programmes throughout the school. This is what excites me; innovation, students learning the same skills they would in conventional classes but using these skills in ways that are relevant and useful – it’s about giving learning a point and making it exciting. It is in this type of class that you see a student motivated to spend hours editing a broadcast to make sure they meet a deadline and have it perfect for their peers; no need for a teacher to push and prod. Incidentally, ISQ is one of only two international schools in China that has a broadcast journalism programme.

ISQ has opted for a cutting edge programme, not just one that is in vogue, or that some schools choose because of the marketing edge it may provide. We want our students to be learning 21st century skills so they will be prepared for the future and we want them to love learning because they know it is relevant to their lives right now.

I believe without a doubt that ISQ is in the enviable position of offering the kind of curriculum most educators only dream of presenting.

Life overseas is exciting to me. Tasting exotic foods, talking to people in a different language, learning intriguing cultural nuances, gazing upon natural wonders, and studying historical sites all have great appeal to me. Living overseas however has one catch: my kids.

I want the best for my kids. I think there is nothing more wonderful for them to experience than life overseas, but I also want them to have the best medical care and the best education. While it is easy to travel to someplace like Beijing for medical emergencies, in China a strong education is not always guaranteed. However, here in Qingdao I’ve never been worried about where my kids will go to school.

Through an organization at International School Qingdao (ISQ), the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), I have been able to be extensively involved with my children’s schooling. Once a month parents, teachers and the school administration meet together to discuss issues of concern at ISQ.

At these meetings I’ve met teachers and staff who are highly qualified and care about my children’s education as well as their character. Together we address health, safety, cultural, and educational concerns. Through our discussions the many parents involved in the PTO and I have been able to give

valuable feedback, helping the administration to understand these issues from a parental perspective. These interactions have helped me to feel valued as an important part of my child’s education.

Being a part of the PTO has also enabled me to interact with parents from a variety of cultures. Together we work to support and enhance all that ISQ offers our kids. Every year we have a Christmas Fair to raise money, and with these funds we contribute to the many needs at ISQ from educational programs to sports programs. We’ve also helped the school to purchase many special items such as additional books for the library and new playground equipment.

PTO moms can be found singing Happy Birthday as they serve cake in their child’s classroom, diligently packing bag lunches for exciting field trips, cheering our school on in sports tournaments, serving coffee and snacks to coaches, and laughing together as we honor our teachers and staff with a special homemade lunch.

My kids have been my only real worry living overseas. Being involved with the PTO at ISQ has helped to take away many of the concerns I have had about their education.

These days when we open a newspaper or switch on the television, we are exposed to stories and issues from around the globe; the generations preceding us could never have imagined such access. To be successful in the new globalised world, we need to be forward-looking and develop a global mindset to prepare our next generation. The mere fact that more and more employment, business, investment and students’ studies commonly involve stepping out of our homelands and into the “global village” proves the transformation our world is undergoing.

An article published in Newsweek magazine in June 2010 focused on the changing world suddenly requiring a new type of professional;

“As emerging markets take off, soft skills that were previously seen as gloss on the CV – adaptability, foreign language skills, ease in other cultures – have suddenly become part of the core Job Descriptions of top managers. We now need chief officers who are diplomats, know how to move across borders without alienating people….Companies now speak of the ideal manager as the perfect combination of East and West.”

Yew Chung International SchoolRecognised for Global Vision

Cathy Ben-David

16 schools•ycis

As educators Yew Chung International School provides the setting for children to achieve a truly international and global mindset, enabling them to become our future leaders. The process ideally begins during the early stages of their childhood, equipping them with all they will need. Dr. Betty Chan, the Director of Yew Chung International School (YCIS) is the daughter of the founding member who launched the first school in Hong Kong in 1932. She is an educator and her vision of a changing future began in 1990’s as the first YCIS campuses were established in mainland China; this immediately immersed children in a new global learning environment.

Why Global Education?Global education is a word very much used now days to promote third culture learning for children who are often not living in their native country; usually synonymous with a “westernised” regard. However, this attitude runs the risk of losing the benefits of the diverse knowledge and education styles the world has to offer collectively. Global education is a process by which we hope to encourage children to gain a greater understanding of the world around them so that they can easily and effectively adapt to whichever country they move onto. As we watch families relocate internationally the most successful and happy experiences are witnessed with our children embracing all that our school environment surrounds them with.

To ensure this becomes a reality at YCIS we continuously research the curriculum content to ensure these expectations are met. Our education is based on the framework and schemes of work from the National Curriculum for England (NCE). The content and subject

matter will extend far and wide; jointly enabling the student to achieve the framework’s learning goals whilst expanding their global knowledge. This NCE is the most commonly accessed national curriculum around the world and not only can YCIS students internally transfer within our network, but absorption throughout the world is effortless. “International” should mean the understanding of cultures.

Language is the Key to Global SuccessToday more and more schools are realising the value of Chinese language, with English and Chinese being the two main languages of the world. Research proves that the early years of a child’s development (from zero to eight years old) are crucial for potential growth. Various aspects of their lives including personality, intellectual development, sociability, critical thinking and communication depend upon the materials and opportunities.

YCIS classes start in Early Childhood Education (ECE) with a 50% English / 50% Chinese language based programme; using child-centered play and an inquiry based teaching approach teachers explore the topics according to the students’ interests via experiences and research. Bilingualism is also adopted in the Primary Years, where students are submerged daily with 70% English and 30% Chinese. Each class has two fully qualified teachers, one native English speaker and one Chinese; YCIS is the pioneer for “co-teaching” whereby the students’ welfare is overseen by both teachers, communication quickly becomes comfortable with either language. Through language a young person can swiftly implement social awareness and understanding too.

17schools•ycis

Equally important is our responsibility helping the parents to appreciate why this teaching style is so beneficial to their children’s absorption in their new environment and development. We do not create a “western bubble” in China, on the contrary our style speeds their adjustment to China and their potential later in life.

In May 2010 Dr. Chan earned the prestigious title Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Illinois in USA; the UIUC acknowledged that Yew Chung International Schools, staffed by both Chinese and Western professionals, utilise curricula that embraces both Western and Eastern cultures. In a recent interview Dr. Chan was asked “What are the characteristics of students who receive a YCIS education and how does this equip them to be tomorrow’s leaders?”

“Firstly all of our students study two languages English and Mandarin Chinese. As these are the two most widely spoken languages in the world it means our graduates can communicate with the majority of the world’s population. Secondly our students receive a strong character education and engage in community service which teaches them to be responsible world citizens, with a strong moral outlook being able to respect people from all cultures. Lastly our students are taught by the highest quality teachers who make them academically strong. Therefore, our students are globally minded, socially aware and have the knowledge and study skills to reach the top positions in their chosen field.”

Looking ForwardA new generation is being formed - a new generation holding the skills and the confident ability to graduate and take on the future challenges. Quality international education is considered by the Chinese government as crucial in attracting foreign investment stability and providing probably the top priority of families whilst considering relocating to China. YCIS looks forward to contributing to the societal and economic development of all concerned. The future is yet to be known; therefore educators have the responsibility to guide the children the appropriate way. We believe our 21st century has a challenging future with environmental issues, economic tribulations and some countries remaining in turmoil; we also believe we may do our part in preparing the children for the future.

Character FormationLeading to the fully balanced young person

Cathy Ben-David

A day in the life of a Yew Chung (YCIS) student holds an array of subjects and opportunities. One unique subject that is part of the curriculum is Character First; this is a comprehensive programme delivered by age appropriate methods, which enlightens the young person and promotes good character.

We live in a society where actions count, and the style and manner in which we behave is important. Lessons in character formation are fully integrated with the weekly schedule of the students’ timetable. “The Thought of the Day” is a short daily focus pulling on the meaning of one chosen quality, such as patience, forgiveness, attentiveness, tolerance etc. Activities to portray and explain the value of the word can take the form of role-play, discussion or artwork. The focus word maybe reflected upon throughout that day and of course at any time when needed later on. Students are encouraged to practice the quality when interacting at school, at home and with the community.

“We believe that the classroom activities are fundamental to allow the children to learn about these qualities,” says a YCIS Primary teacher. “Positive praise and encouragement is vital and a child who perhaps does not excel academically can feel rewarded in other ways, boosting their confidence as a person.”

The Character First Programme allows a weekly reflection of the typical behaviour of well known animals, helping the children to understand the true meaning of the gesture and character. For example, “diligence” - the meaning is gathered through a story of a beaver that keeps working hard, finishing his task, concentrating and not being lazy. A song, a story, lesson activities and discussions of how to display this personality all contribute to the embracement by the children.

Another example is “hospitality” illustrated by cheerfully sharing food, shelter and friendship with others. The bighorn sheep is the most mature female, leading the flock to find all that they need. Her vigilance and unselfish qualities allow others to eat first whilst she stands guard. The children learn more of her behaviour and can be reminded to:

Welcome visitors•Make others feel special•Prepare for guests•Gladly share •Expect nothing in return.•

‘Expect nothing in return’ is at the heart of charitable efforts. “Love and Charity” features in one line of the YCIS School Motto; staff are always keen to explore channels to reach those worse off than ourselves. We are always so impressed with the response shown by our students (with the tremendous support of parents) when we initiate a new drive to give to others. Previous charitable efforts have included:

Pancake Breakfast• – prepared at 6:00am on campus by Secondary students, served and sold to all our families between 7:30-8:30am. The funds raised here were taken on an Experiencing China Trip to Xian; whereby the students visited an orphanage and made the donation.24 hour Famine• – the Secondary students managed to keep going on lots of water only; they camped at school to support each other. By asking family and friends to sponsor them they raised an impressive amount for an orphanage in Inner Mongolia during a student trip.Charity Bazaar • – children donated unwanted books and toys and sold them to raise funds to contribute to the Yew Chung Sichuan Earthquake Fund. The Giving Tree• – each student took home a large travel bag with details of a student in rural Pingdu City. YCIS liaised with Pingdu City Government to identify families who would be in great need of winter fuel, rice, flour and warm clothing. The Student Council members represented the whole school and carefully delivered each bag to the correct family.Milk & Diaper Drive• – students brought in such items and delivered to a local orphanage.Non-Uniform Day • – YCIS students wear a uniform but occasionally one day will be declared “non-uniform day” with the invitation to make a small cash contribution to a cause.

Bravery and boldness, sensitivity and discernment are other traits that the students learn more about, wherever possible they practice and support each other to grow and develop. Our parents witness the inner transformation and are delighted to see this is an automatic part of the day in the life of a YCIS student.

28 reading

Rates of reading are decreasing. Mournfully or gleefully, commentators herald the end of books and the age of the internet and blogs. Multimedia education resources are the future. But, however great the potential of the internet, the demise of reading books is greatly exaggerated. Reading books remains a core component of western education in all grades. I contacted teachers from Oak Park, Illinois, a suburb outside of Chicago, to ask them how they used reading in their classrooms and what skills were improved through reading.

In primary grades, teachers introduce reading in a variety of ways. Oak Park students have independent reading time each school day. Called DEAR Time (Drop Everything and Read), for 10-30 minutes students choose books according to their

own skill level and interests. One teacher remarked this was so popular she offered extra independent reading time as a reward for finishing a difficult topic ahead of schedule.

In addition to independent reading in the classroom, teachers also assign about 15 or 20 minutes of reading for homework. Students are encouraged to do this with their parents, either by listening to their parents read or by reading aloud to their parents. Teachers encouraged and evaluated this homework reading in many ways. Students read aloud sections of books that they completed, kept a journal of all the books they read, wrote book reviews and presented book reports to the class. Students received acknowledgements like gold stars or simple prizes for their reading.

Reading Makes You SmarterAnd more creative. And more social

Conor Gallogly, Manager, The Book Nook English Bookstore

29reading

Teachers also showed their commitment to reading during daily reading periods with their students. One teacher of 1st and 2nd grade wrote, “Reading is paramount to learning. A child should hear books daily.” Another said that she usually read from a chapter book and also finished a picture book each day. Usually these books were connected with a science or social studies topic that the students were learning about during other times of the day. They would use fiction and non-fiction books to reinforce other lessons.

As students become older, their reading becomes more structured. Assigned readings are used to introduce specific concepts or provide an emotional and intellectual connection to a different historical period or cultural group. Assigned readings are followed up by class discussions, group projects and written assignments. By the time students are in high school, most of their English education will be through assigned reading of novels, plays, short stories or poetry followed by written, verbal or group responses to the reading.

Now that we have seen how teachers use reading in the classroom, let’s move on to the why. American teachers clearly believe reading builds critical skills. One primary teacher responded, “Listening to books increases rich and colourful vocabulary.” In primary school, reading is the primary method of expanding students’ vocabulary, a lesson that English as a second language learners would be advised to note. Studies have also shown that avid readers score better on the SAT, a test that used to rely heavily on vocabulary skills.

Another important skill is creativity. Reading books “spurs the imagination” according to one teacher. Books open up an opportunity to learn about or dream about the inaccessible, fantastical and foreign. Students’ horizons are broadened far beyond their own experiences. Their creativity and imagination is also fostered because independent reading is one of the best avenues for students to guide their own education.

Reading also provides one of the best opportunities for students to develop understanding of, empathy for and insight into the lives, experiences and actions of people whose situations are different than their own. Through books, students are connected to the people from the past, different countries, cultures or class. Their beliefs, principles, attitudes and assumptions are challenged in doing so, students are forced to grow and develop as people.

Of course, a student’s growth as a person does not help him or her pass an exam. But reading helps with that too. One teacher wrote, it is “obvious that one becomes a better writer if one is an avid reader.” Lots of reading helps developing writing skills. As a teacher, it is difficult to teach writing to students who have little reading experience. It might be like teaching a musical instrument to someone who does not listen to music. Readers learn patterns, principles and techniques of good writing that they can use to powerfully communicate their ideas.

Someday one of these students might become the next great writer. But if not, with each book read, they will lay down the foundation to a first class education. So follow your interests and start reading.

Coco’s KitchenWhere learning gets sweet

For generations, Easy Bake Ovens have warmed kids to the joys of cooking. Coco’s Kitchen is like an Easy Bake master class, a workshop with long tables, an assortment of tools for crafting cakes and other confections, and the expertise of Ms. Li and Ms. Sun to guide budding chefs (and/or their parents) in new culinary adventures.

Just let the ladies at Coco’s know what you want to make and when you want to make it! They’ll source the ingredients (butter, baking powder, cream cheese and more), and guide you through the process. Finally, you can pop your cake or cookies into one of their many toaster ovens and find out how you did. Want to know the secret to great tiramisu? Or make incredible edible art with fondant icing? They’ll be more than happy to show you!

The instructors met while training with one of Qingdao’s most prolific bakery chefs, and found that they shared an international taste for cakes and pies. They started working with recipes that they found online, and decided to turn their discoveries into a service. Now, folks can visit their shop for a delicious lesson, or they can bring their full set-up and expertise to parties anywhere in the city so you can try it at home.

Most lessons start at 68元/2 people. Memberships cost 680元 and get you twenty lessons, as well as unlimited use of their workshop and ovens any time you want to drop by. For event bookings, ask them for a quotation.

Pizza, cookies, cakes - it’s easy to get excited about this kind of learning! For more information, call 8090-2299 or email [email protected]. Located inside Creative 100, 100 Nanjing Lu.

32 sailing

Qingdao has come relatively late to the pursuit of sailing, but a variety of programmes throughout the warm months, and for all ages, are helping to make China’s Sailing City an appropriate moniker in the post-Olympic era.

Most locally-based sailing takes place between late April and early November, because conditions on the Yellow Sea are bitterly cold in the winter. But the very best sailing is April-May and September-October, with mild temperatures and good wind. Recent years have seen either the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race or Volvo Ocean Race fleets stop through in January or February, but currently none are scheduled for early 2011.

Read on for the best ways to make Qingdao’s official sport a part of your regular routine!

YoungstersThe National Organisation of Community Sailing Programmes (NOCSP) was founded in 2004 and was the inspiration of a few keen sailors to enhance and bring the sport to local children. Since 2007 YCIS has recognised the sailing programmes offered by the NOCSP for local children and have continually supported with sponsorship. This has

led to sailing programmes being shared with international students as young as eight years old. A special five week sailing programme (in April and May) has generated by NOCSP and offered to students of KISQ, QISS, QMIS and YCIS. A total of fifty students registered to join the programme in April 2010.

The students’ sailing ability varied due to age and experience. Two classes of boatwere offered, the Optimist and Splash; with a beginners’ and advanced division being set up for Optimist sailors. The training programme included care for the different parts of the boat, terminology, how to rig the boat, and other principles of sailing.

The concluding regatta in May gave the students the chance to experience sailing racing. The sailors gave their oath to sail with good sportsmanship. A simple course was set up by the trainers to test students’ skills using strict regatta practices and rules. Trophies were awarded to first, second and third places per race and two School Races (Optimist and Splash) were the ultimate events - each school pulled on their most successful sailors to head for the bigger trophies!

Local CircuitQingdao sailing luminaries Todd Cunningham (Doyle Sailmakers), Jeppe Mortensen (WETA Trimaran), Steven Gao (Lennon Bar), and Loik Morgant (CAPE-10) have watched Qingdao’s sailing facilities unfurl over the past five years, and wanted to give other enthusiasts an opportunity to get out on the water. Last year, they struck a deal to use the city’s fleet of Flying Tiger yachts to organise racing events off the coast (weather conditions permitting) every Sunday afternoon from Spring to late Autumn.

The sailors come from all ages, nationalities, and experience levels (beginners are welcome), and join a crew of up to 7 per yacht. They congregate at the International Sailing Center every Sunday afternoon, meeting behind Marina City at 12:30. After crews are organised, the boats set off for races on nearby Fushan Bay. Following the event, folks typically hang around to celebrate with a couple of cold ones.

Groups can sign up to race as a team for a month at a time, and their scores will be tallied over the weeks for a prize at the end. Businesses that want to support local sailing are encouraged to get involved, either sponsoring a team or providing funding or prizes for a particular month. In 2010, an average of 5-6 boats have participated in the races each week, making for terrific competition on the water.

In 2010, the racing will continue through October, and is expected to start again in April 2011 (weather permitting).

For more information, call Todd Cunningham at 150 9205-6750 or visit Steven Gao at Lennon Bar. Ask them how to get involved with the Flying Tigers!

International WatersThe Beijing Sailing Center is getting ready to compete in a series of prestigious yacht racing regattas taking place across Asia in the coming months. The team will be made up of members and regular sailors from the Beijing Sailing Center, together with BSC’s professional crew. Beijing Sailing Center offers a package arrangement for each regatta, taking care of flights, charter fees, accommodation, meals and hospitality, so their customer has nothing to worry about!

The Mayors Cup, the first event of the season, is sailed on home waters, from Qingdao to Dalian. Combining cruising, coastal passage races and short inshore races, this unique event takes place in matched Beneteau First 40s, guaranteeing top class fleet racing. Interest in the BSC team has been so high that team places are already sold out for the August event. Beijing Sailing Center member, Steve Szymanski is one of the lucky ones to have secured a place with the BSC Mayor’s Cup team. He says; “I am looking forward to taking part and to being part of a team that works

together toward the common goal of winning. I really enjoy sailing for the combination of mental and physical skills required, and of course the camaraderie involved.”

Looking beyond the Mayor’s Cup, Rick Pointon, Director of Beijing Sailing Center, says; “Beijing Sailing Center has plenty more yachting events lined up in the coming months, giving more people the opportunity to try this elite sport and to travel to some fantastic locations across Asia.” Highlights will include the China Cup in October, which is the pinnacle of China’s international yachting calendar, and the King’s Cup in December, a world-renowned regatta held at the glamorous Kata Beach, Phuket, Thailand.

January will see a BSC team travel to Malaysia for the Royal Langkawi International Regatta, with four days of inshore racing. A team will also head offshore for the Round Hainian Race in March, a series of passage races beginning from the port of Haikou in the north of the island and finishing in the famous resort of Sanya.

Anyone interested in joining a Beijing Sailing Center team at an upcoming yachting event is invited to contact Beijing Sailing Center on (010) 5900-0276 or to email [email protected]. Further information can be found at www.beijingsailing.com.

Student ProfileOnnika remembers QISS

Onnika van Oosterbosch’s passport says she’s Dutch, but she spent ten years in China (and 3.5 in Italy). She recently graduated from Qingdao No.1 International School of Shandong (QISS) and is now in Holland ready to start at the University of Wageningen to study Animal Science.

Onnika recently wrote to Redstar about her experience as an international student in Qingdao.

I had a lot of freedom to study what I needed to achieve my goals and learned many important life skills. In 2008 some of the faculty gave me the opportunity to start up a group called Global Issues Group. It focused on environmental and global issues. We organized school activities like the beach clean up and helping earthquake victims. For me this was an ideal situation to learn leadership and organisation skills.

QISS also has a focus on public speaking which I think is very important. In today’s world it is hard to get any job if you are shy and nervous around people. Being able to stand in front of the whole school without the fear of being laughed at is important. Some pride and confidence will earn you respect and will get people to follow your lead.

When it came time to plan for after graduation I realised that there were great differences in the standards of university entrances around the world. For me to enter the University of Wageningen I needed to take multiple AP courses. Even though most students are aiming for university in the US or Korea, QISS was very flexible and helpful and gave me the support and freedom to take the courses and other exams that I needed in order to enter university that I wanted.

What challenges do international schools in Qingdao have? One thing is certainly the fact that Korean is often spoken as much as English in classrooms and break times. It can make it more difficult for everyone to improve their English, which is a goal we all share as learners.

I must admit that I missed having one of my favourite courses, Design Technology. When I attended Nanjing International School we had a DT class which was the most exciting period of the week. We learned how to work with different materials like wood, tin, styrofoam, and plastic. And we got to learn how to use different machines. I remember making a train out of Coke-cans, and using this huge machine to carve our name on a piece of wood, it all sounds simple, but it made learning a lot of fun.

All in all I am thankful for the education I did receive and for the things I was able to learn. I received my education in many more ways than just studying out of a text book, which has made it more enjoyable. I learned a lot in a comfortable environment and at the same time made lots of great friends.
