WENDYKONGTell us about yourself My name is Wendy Kong, I’m 22 years old, I play tennis and I’m completing a Bachelor of Commerce degree. I’m majoring in Financial and Managerial Accounting and minoring in Business Law.

What are your recent sporting achievements? I’ve represented W.A in U14’s, U16’s and U18s state team events and a representative in the Australian Honour Team. I was Player of the Year every year from Year 8-12 at Applecross Senior High (which ran a special tennis program). I also had a full scholarship to play tennis for a Division 1 University in the United States.

How did you get into playing Tennis? My father introduced me to tennis when I was 8 years old. My dad’s Chinese restaurant was next to my primary school

which had 2 tennis courts. When the restaurant closed between 2-4pm my dad and his friends would have a hit and when my brother and I finished school at about 3pm we would just watch them play and they used us as ball kids. We got bored of that and wanting to try playing; we got our racquets and then my father enrolled us at a local tennis club.

How do you train to be the best? What is your weekly training schedule?Practice, practice, practice and get as much match practice as possible.

Do you keep active outside of tennis? What other forms of exercise do you enjoy?I’m a member of a swimming club, I enjoy having a good swim and taking my kayak out.

How do you unwind and relax?I like all sorts of music, dancing, jogging, going for long drives, seeing my friends and eating Caramello Koalas.

What are your ambitions for the future? I hope to use my accounting degree! What advice would you give to up and coming tennis playersDon’t take tennis too seriously, have fun and enjoy it.

If you could meet anyone, living or dead, and ask them one question, who and what would it be?I would ask Michael Jackson for dance lessons.

After dominating 2010, 2011 has seen the UWA Boat Club continue to go from strength to strength. This season UWA Boat Club looks set to battle it out with Fremantle Rowing Club for supremacy in the Rowing WA pennant competition, with both clubs making a very strong start. UWABC is currently sitting in a close second place. The retiring rowers from 2010 have been replaced with high numbers of new experienced and novice members, so the squads are looking strong.

The club also fielded a small but highly successful squad for the National Championships in Adelaide, competing against an assortment of Olympians and World Rowing representatives, with the cream of Australian Rowing travelling to National Championships each year. They returned with a swag of medals - Gold in the Open LW2X- & Open LW4X-, Silver in the U23LM2-, U19M1X, U19M4X-, and the Interstate LW4X-, and Bronze in the U23L-M1X, U19M2X-, Queen’s Cup (Women’s Open 8 race), and the Club M2X-.

This was followed up by the National Selections regatta in Penrith, which saw 3 club members selected to represent Australia. Congratulations to Maia Simmonds, Tim Widdicombe, and Tom Meares on making the team!

If you would like to know more about rowing with UWA Boat Club, contact Karlie on [email protected] for moreinformation.

UWA Lawn Bowls settles into hearts, minds, and stomachs with the inaugural Wednesday Bowls, Beer and Pizza night. Led by president Allen (dubbed ‘Dan the Man’ according to his bowls) the club has recently been affiliated with Dalkeith-Nedlands. This has allowed club youth director Joel Steinberg to organize bigger and better events or ‘roll-ups’ in bowls jargon. There were many positive comments regarding the day, such as: “It’s just a great way to get ‘prepared’ for Wednesday night at Cap S” and “It really is genuine 1976 prices!”

After hours buried under books and journals, grappling with metaphysical puzzles or wading through ideological debates, it is always refreshing to stretch the legs out in a fouette or chasse (Savate kicks) and connect with solid flesh and bone.

A French fighting art with roots going back to classical Greece, Savate (lit. ‘old boot’) has been practised and developed in a uniquely practical, resistance-oriented way here in Perth since the 70s.

Over the winter holidays I had the terrific opportunity to make my first ever visit to France, to observe and compete on behalf of UWA in the World University Championships in Nantes and the Mediterranean International Tournament in Narbonne.

Although I have trained with the UWA club for a few years, we have only been focusing on Savate’s ring-sport aspect for the last few months. The terriers (ring-fighters) who I saw upon arrival in Nantes were remarkably fit and tactically as-tute, able to trade blows with fluidity and gusto from start to finish.

Competitors and officials from different countries were meeting and swapping ideas, particularly at the celebrations afterwards. As the only representatives from Australia, Colin Pestell (UWA Savate club coach) and I were peppered with questions about Western Australia and our club.

The UWA Football Club is having its most successful season in years. The club hasn’t won an A Grade premiership since 1996, but with one game to go before the completion of the first round of fixtures, A Grade are still undefeated at the top of the table (7 wins, 1 draw) and the A Reserves are also in 1st position (7 wins, 1 loss).

The success carries on down the club, with the 3rds team sitting in 3rd position and the 4ths at second on the ladder, having just beaten the third-placed team by a lazy 20 goals. Both colts teams are also finals-bound as they currently sit in the top 5.

Given this great start to the season the club will be look at a high success rate come finals time in September.

French cooking, Paris, provincial castles, and the wine were all incredibly good, but the best night I had in France was spent sitting in front of a boxing ring in Narbonne in south France, watching the other fights after having managed to beat the Polish welterweight champion.

It had been an exhausting three rounds in which we traded over two hundred kicks. We had fought in the light-contact division and, fortunately, neither of us were injured. The judges liked to see me using the chasse (side-stomp) in the traditional way, which is more applicable to a street-fight and how we do it in Perth.

The combat (fuller-contact) fights that came afterwards were the most exciting ring fights in any sport I’ve ever seen. Despite being strictly amateur competitions, the terriers were in incredible shape and fought with tenacity and flare. Occasionally a bone broke or somebody collapsed to the floor, but for each injury there were dozens of successful evasions, cunning faints, lightning-fast kicks and punches, charges and ripostes.

I was delighted by the warm hospitality of Gilles LeDuigou, President of the International Savate Federation, who gave my fiancé and I a place to stay, plenty to eat and drink, and a fantastic tour of Paris at night. The kindness of Joel Dumez, ex-bodyguard of Jacque Chirac, who looked after our team in Narbonne, was also much appreciated.

”“Get to the Gold Coast for Australian Uni Games 2011 and represent UWA.

After taking out the Overall Champion Title last year, UWA is looking to continue its reign of sporting dominance with another strong performance for 2011.

The Gold Coast has proved a popular spot for the AUG competitions in the past, and this year should be no different. Over 400 students are expected to cross the Nullabour to represent UWA against 41 other competing universities from around Australia.

The increase in interest to compete at AUG, along with UWA’s history of sporting excellence, combined last year to help steer UWA to the top of the Australian University Sport Ladder for the first time in history (relegating Monash to 2nd place for

the first time in two years). Sports Council President and sailor Alistair Marchesi believes the success and high interest can be contributed to the students love for sport.

Unlike previous years, this year will see the winning university determined by the number of competitions won, there are approximately 50 on offer.

While we may not reach last year’s peak of more than 500 participants, the UWA team is still expected to be competitive in the sporting arena through the strong network of clubs. With the majority of clubs competing in State Grade or 1st Grade amateurs, UWA students already have a good grounding and opportunity for team mates to train, play and socialise with each other.

As selections begin to be confirmed, fundraising becomes evident on campus with teams organising

chocolate sales, quizes and movie nights. On top of this, Sports Council is looking to put together a raffle which each of the teams can be involved in.

Alistair feels confident that even though the Games are still some time away the excitement is already starting to build and a lot of people need to start grappling with the mechanics of getting to the Games.

Managing team registration, as well as sorting out airfares and other travel expenses are often costly, but once done it’ll be a matter of counting down the days until the Games.

All teams that won last year are expected to again feature at the top of their tables, but will face an uphill battle with strong Eastern State competition. The men’s AFL team is expected to face a resurgen Melbourne University, who did not enter a team last year. The women’s Soccer team would love to knock off Sydney University again, and our Middle Distance Running continues to get stronger and stronger each year.

To get involved visit www.sport.uwa.edu.au and register online.

“Sport is the best way to meet people on campus, so obviously winning the Games last year at home has made a lot of people eager to get out there this year and defend their title, or get what they didn’t last time round. Plus it’s on the Gold Coast, which is a great location for every aspect of Uni Games and I think this is encouraging a lot of people to get over before the Games goes to Adelaide in 2012.” - Alistair Marchesi
