10. Recreation & Fitness Centre

Colin Thurlow has joined our team as the new Recreation & Fitness Centre Manager in September, and brings with him a wealth of experience and industry knowledge.

Having recently run a very successful team at Next Generation Kings Park, Colin has chosen to get involved with UWA Sports and provide his expertise through this exciting time of change.

Colin has overseen and been involved with several refurbishments and equipment upgrades in health clubs around Perth. These skills along with the managerial experience he brings will see a fresh approach to the current operation.

“With upgrades to the Centre, and new equipment arriving, the timing is right to properly move things forward.”

Colin Thurlow may be a long way from the mountains, but former Technical Director of the Coronet Peak and Remarkables Ski Schools in New Zealand has found a new home at the UWA Recreation & Fitness Centre.

RECREATION &FITNESS CENTRE

The former Technical Director of the Coronet Peak and Remarkables Ski Schools is a long way from any snow, but Colin has previously enjoyed a professional career as a ski instructor working around the world from France, USA, and New Zealand.

These international experiences have influenced Colin and set the blueprint for his operational strengths, focusing on superior customer service.

Colin is eager to apply these strengths at UWA Sports and embrace the University’s vision of international excellence.

With upgrades to the Centre, and new

equipment arriving, the timing is right to properly

move things forward.

”Bigger and BetterThe UWA Recreation & Fitness Centre is more than just a sporting hub on Crawley Campus. It’s a meeting point for students, staff and the local community, a place for people to socialize, get active and engage with each other in a positive and healthy way.

But 40 years of social and competitive sports and fitness activity have left their mark, with wear and tear taking its toll on both building and equipment.

Time for a facelift. More of a face-to-toe makeover actually, taking into account the $1.9 million being invested in the redevelopment project by the University and UWA Sports over the next year.

The Centre will be upgraded with brand-new cardio, spin, and circuit rooms, change room facilities, high performance area, a designated group fitness studio and massive fitness floor area (doubling the current size), all featuring state-of-the-art fitness equipment. Upon completion, the UWA Recreation & Fitness Centre will be counted as one of the most advanced and best equipped university sports facilities in Australia, satisfying every recreation, sporting and fitness need.

The redevelopment is already underway, with the new cardio room and the change rooms fully operational and open to the public.

UWA Sports expects the majority of these upgrades to be complete by the start of Semester 1 2012.

I joined UWA Staff Fitness after attending the launch of the program and seeing the potential benefits of participating. I was particularly keen to improve my physical fitness.

My fitness levels had declined considerably and my weight had also increased after giving up playing basketball some six years ago.

I am pleased to report that my fitness levels have increased markedly, my weight has dropped some 20kg and my overall sense of well being has also improved.

UWA Staff Fitness has provided me with an excellent opportunity to strive towards my personal fitness goals in the conducive environment of the Watersports & Leadership Centre overlooking the Swan River under the instruction of attentive professional staff.

Uni Sport for Kids (US4K) is a multi-sport day camp run every school holidays for the past 16 years by UWA Sports. US4K provides primary school-aged children the opportunity to try new sports such as Judo, Ultimate Frisbee, Fencing and Floorball, as well as indulging in playground favourites such as Footy, Netball, Soccer, Dodgeball and Basketball. With access to indoor courts, and various outdoor areas here at UWA, it’s not hard to see how US4K can offer over 15 different sports throughout each program. Your child is sure to find something they love!

Each day we also provide a specialist clinic run by either a UWA Sports club, professional sporting teams or other outside organisations. These range greatly from the Heart Foundation’s Jump Rope For Heart to players from the West Coast Eagles, Western Force, Perth Glory and West Coast Fever coming in to put the kids through their paces. The kids also love the Flying Fox and Giant Swing that we set up inside the Recreation Centre.

US4K is run largely by student leaders from UWA. Most are Sport Science or Education students as they have a passion for physical education, providing a friendly and enjoyable environment for the kids to be a part of each day.

US4K is geared to suit your needs, with pick up times at 1:00pm, 3:30pm or 5:15pm available. Prices start at just $42 for the 8:00am-1:00pm session.

Make the most of the holidays, sign up for Uni Sport 4 Kids.

EXCELLENCEUWA has a history of excellence in sailing, competiting at local, national, and international levels regularly. The 2011 Team had only come together for AUG, yet their expertise and technical prowess gave them the edge they needed for victory.

Tell us about your team. Who’s involved? What are your roles on the boat? LT: We’re an 8 person team, 6 members sail in any one race, 3 skippers and 3 crew, with one skipper and one crew per boat. I’m usually a skipper. SG: We race 3 boats on the team. We had everyone switching around throughout the regatta, it gave everyone a chance to do what they wanted.

Can you give us a little history of your team? How long have you been competitng together? DG: We’ve brought together some very talented sailors from different areas, though the team hadn’t actually sailed together as a whole before AUG. Steve, Sam, and myself sailed in the team racing Nationals earlier this year and won. Steve and Luc sailed together on a team and finished 5th in the 2009 team racing Worlds, while I sailed on another team and won the Under 21 trophy and finished second overall to USA. ST: The core of the team is Luc Tasker, David Gilmour, Sam Glilmour and myself. We’re all skippers and have competed together at the open level and won. We have also 4 crews who are

experienced teams racers and capable skippers in their own right.

How do you train to be top competitve sailors? ST: We have regular scheduled training with a coach based from our local yacht club’s and individually sail our own class of boats at various levels. SG: Mainly time on the water, the more the better. DG: Sailing requires constant training and racing to get to the top and stay there requiring training 3-4 times a week at a minimum and attending regattas taking up several months of the year.

What were your expectations going into AUG 2011? ST: Sam, Dave and Steve sailed at the Open Teams Racing Championship in Sydney in May earlier in the year and won the event. So going into the event we knew we would be a strong team with the experience and result from the Open Championships. LT: I didn’t train at all prior to the regatta. Once you have obtained a certain level of experience in team racing, it is difficult to lose that.

How did the team go at AUG? What’s involved in competitive sailing? LT: Competitive team racing involves many back to back races, so the mental game comes into it as the day draws on. SG: The main aspects involved working together on the boat, which took a while getting used to. We were team racing, which is a 3 boat on 3 boat competition,

trying to get your three boats round the course first was our main goal. ST: Long days at the venue, with short intense racing. We needed to be able to switch in and out of race mode many times so that we could conserve energy and maintain focus for the next race of the day.

What were your standout moments from this year’s AUG? ST: Being undefeated in the series was pretty special. SG: Winning the regatta and getting a green and gold medal had to be my standout moment. LT: Our team coming 1st, 2nd, and 3rd across the line (out of the 6 boat race, 3 boats per team), in every race during the finals series on the Thursday. DG: Winning the finals and going through the regatta undefeated.

What was the most challenging part of the competition? Did you come up against any obstacles? SG: The regatta site had a substantial amount of tide, and it was quite unusual sailing in that. Also getting up in the mornings. That was hard. LT: The tide. Watching and observing the mistakes made by other teams, and learning from it helped. ST: Conserving energy on the long days and getting to the venue.

What are your ambitions for the future? Are you planning to sail together again at AUG 2012 in Adelaide? SG: It would be good to sail with the team, though I haven’t thought about next year yet. I would be keen to head over again. DG: Taking a break from team racing, my focus is on 49er sailing and match racing. LT: This was my last AUG. I would like to compete again in an ISAF Team Racing World Championship, and one day win.

How can people get involved with sailing at UWA? What advice would you give to up and coming sailors? SG: Try and get involved at a yacht club

and go from there. LT: Speak to any of those AUG participants who will be around for the next few years. DG: UWA has a Foundation (that’s a class of boat) that UWA students can get out sailing on and it’s a very easy way to get into the sport. Whether you want to go racing or cruising the boat can do it all. ST: Join the facebook page and get involved with Wednesday racing at Royal Perth yacht club on the UWA Centennial 36 foot yacht.

UWARUGBYMAKESTHEGRADE

FEATURECLUB: RUGBY

“Fairy tales can come true, they happen all the time”, 1st Grade player Cian O’Connor told the team taking the field, before going on to rewrite 39 years of history in defeating Nedlands 15-13 in front of a packed crowd at UWA Sports Park.

For years they were awful, then they were nearly good enough, but this year bore something different. The UWA Rugby Club 1st Graders had a hardness to them, a touch of class in their actions, and the belief that they could do anything if they put their mind to. There was a lot of hard work, blood, sweat and tears. And there was victory.

The teams confidence had been rocked a fortnight earlier, and sketchy moments at trainings throughout the week had the team spooked. However, taking the field on this particular Sunday the team was focused and their attitude was set. With 80 minutes of effort left for the season, each and every player was ready to give it their all.

“For me personally it was a great moment, a reward for those people and sponsors who have tirelessly supported the players and the club” reflected 1st Grade Captain Sean Ashton on the historic match.

“We went in for the satisfaction of our own team. To fulfill the goals which we had set for ourselves. We had developed a winning attitude and early into the second round, we realised we had the potential to take this all the way. We wanted to win this for ourselves. The players, coaches, and support staff had put in too much effort to let this opportunity slip by.” Man of the match went to UWA’s Alan Kingsley. Members of the 1977 and 1972 Grand Final teams, as well as hundreds of other past UWA players attended to support the 2011 team and share in the joy of victory.

Elation spread across the faces of the players of the 1972 team, reliving their own special memories as the A graders donned their medals.

UWA’s victory has set the tune for future generations of young players at the club. Previously too many good players have passed through the club doors without the opportunity to play finals rugby, let alone win a grand final. After Sunday, young UWA players coming through the club, their parents and coaches, have something to hang their hat on. Something to play for. The club looks towards 2012 with a desire to continue riding this wave, knowing that their 2011 premiership means they will work all the harder come preseason training in 2012. They have suffered through defeats to earn their place at the top, and now there will be new and different challenges to face. But no one will forget how far the club has come. The principles that have seen them claim a first grade premiership; hard work, fair play, sportsmanship, and desire to not accept the status quo!

There was a lot of hard work, blood, sweat and tears. And there was victory.

UWA RUGBY GO 3 FOR 3 GRAND FINALSUWA 4th Grade Black created Club history with a three-peat (three conscutive years of premiership success) in defeating a determined and committed Nedlands 22-19 with a penalty on the bell to secure the historic win.

The 4ths looked out of sorts in the first half, but came back from 19 - 5

down in a nail-biting second half to equalise 19 all with only 4 minutes to go, before the match-winning penalty swung it our way.

U/18 Colts, the future of UWA Rugby, overran a gallant Wests 39-14 to be part of an historic 3 from 3 weekend.

Four teams played off in their respective grand finals this year, and when the final whistle blew UWA had come out victors in two. Division 7 won by five goals, after going goal for goal with their opposition for the majority of the game, and Division 11 by 11 goals after they consolidated an early lead throughout the game.

In the other two games UWA Division 4 went down by five goals and Division 12 six goals, with both finals very close throughout.

Club President Jodie Rintoul said it was a great day for the club, celebrating 50 years playing in the Perth Netball Association and being one of the competition inaugural clubs.

“All the teams played really well and deserved to be in the finals,” Jodie said.

“They all represented the club really well and played the game in the spirit it should be.”

While there were a number of other teams which didn’t make the finals they also played well throughout the year and only missed out on playing in finals by a couple of wins.”

This year the club fielded 13 teams in the Perth Netball Association’s open competition, which is the largest in the state. Not only did the club do well on grand final day, the four same teams were consistent throughout the year with three taking out the minor premiership in their divisions after 14 rounds of competition. A fourth team finishing second on the ladder.

Following the grand finals, the club held its annual dinner and presentation night at The Saint in Innaloo.

THE UWA FOOTBALL (AFL) CLUB DEFEAT MOUNT LAWLEY 10.16 AGAINST 5.10 TO WIN THE A GRADE FLAG.

Right from the first bounce, UWA got on top of Mt Lawley and enjoyed the majority of the play in the first quarter. After initially struggling to convert their chances David Crudeli kicked three quick goals to give UWA a strong buffer at the first break.

UWA won a lot of the ball in the second quarter and worked strongly up into a slight cross breeze. Breen, Wood, Greaney, O’Hara, Taylor and the rest of the midfield maintained the ascendancy and the backline continued to keep Mt Lawley’s forwards quiet. By half time, we had built up a considerable lead of 30 points.

Mt Lawley began to gather some momentum in the latter part of the third quarter, kicking three goals in succession, brining themselves back into the game. But just before the siren, UWA got a great steadying goal from Harry Garland. They weren’t going to let it slip!

Both players have had strong years. Ben played college basketball at Augusta State University in the US and then with Perry Lakes in the State League, and Rob performed highly for Willetton at State level.

Both players bring talent, athleticism and a drive to win that will benefit the Perth Wildcats for many years to come.

Drew Banfield kicked our third with a great running goal.

After having dominated final quarters for most of the year, the boys were confident in their ability to run on in the last quarter. Big Dono, awarded the medal for Best On Ground, took another good goal to put UWA in front, followed up a cheeky snap from Peter Toll to seal the game.

UWA-NEDLANDS FOOTBALL TAKES MAIDEN VICTORY

The UWA-Nedlands Football Club Men’s Amateur Division 3 team has won their first Premiership since the soccer club was founded in 1949.

Adding to the club’s success, the Men’s Amateur Premier team were accepted into the State League for next season, moving back to the top tier of football for the first time in 17 years.

The Women’s Premier team had their highest finish in 5 years of playing at the top level (4th plus Night Series runners up and cup semi finalists). The Division 2 team came runners up in their league.

The UWA Women’s Soccer team also brought home the silver medal at AUG 2011, rounding off a very successful season for the club.

Kicking into the wind in the last quarter, UWA heeded Coach Dwyer’s rather loud calls for ‘gut running’ and pushed forward strongly. Nathan Hogg’s goal from the right forward pocket gave them a break of six goals and with a couple more from Crudeli, UWA was home.

After the game, A Grade Coach Luke Dwyer paid tribute to the huge number of past players and supporters, Club President Peter Toll and players like Fleay, Hall, J. Stewart, Harding and B. Mumford who were unlucky to miss the game.

The Australian University Games are one of the biggest sporting events in the nation, bringing together more than 6, 200 students from universities all over Australia. This year the event descended upon its unofficial home; the Gold Coast, and for 5 days the city was filled to the brim with young, game-faced athletes ready to go hard.

UWA Sports uprooted 403 students from water-logged Perth and transplanted them into the sunny south Queensland. With a history of sporting excellence, and the determination to succeed, Team UWA hit the ground running. They came back with their heads, and their medals, held high.
