A BRIEF HISTORYREcreate designs is an adult & children’s clothing line, acces-sories, and books made from upcycled materials since 2005. After years of making unique, handmade holiday gifts for friends and family, founder Carol Lynn Lapotka began produc-ing one-of-a-kind creations for local craft and street fairs in Madison, WI. Lapotka studied art, design, and environmental studies at Edgewood College, and transformed these interests into a business.

REcreate Designs thrived and became a full-time venture after moving to Missoula, MT in 2007. The original and ever popular “tee skirts,“ made from upcycled t-shirts, can be found at numerous boutiques in Montana and around the country. REcreate Designs now operates just north of Missoula at the foot of the Mission Mountains, and is constantly expanding its selection of trash-to-treasure products. Raw materials are sourced from thrift and second-hand outlets, reclaimed, and repurposed into the products—keeping an estimated 3000 lbs of waste out of the landfills every year.

We have expanded our selection of clothing from the basic tee-skirt that we started almost 10 years ago to a full line of clothing including tops, tanks, dresses for adults and a well-developed Wee Cycle collection of clothing for the wee ones.

Our Wee Cycle line offers a chance for kiddos to be dressed in durable clothing with a longer closet life because of specific conscious design decisions. Our ever-expanding selection of styles for kiddos includes baby rompers & shirts, fancy pants, skirts, jumpers, dresses, hoodies, reversible jackets, legwarm-ers, and hats ranging in size from baby to tween.

Our upcycled books come in a variety of sizes and are made from discarded book covers and pages, 100% recycled paper, and a collection of random bits. We have recently added a MT shaped product made from old book covers. Share your pride in MT with the world with one an “I heart MT” magnet or ornament available in a variety of colors.

MADE IN MONTANAREcreate Designs is a small business with big dreams. We are proud to be 100% made in Montana by people who care. We employ local folks and purchase a majority of our raw materials from area thrift and second-hand stores. We give back to the community whenever possible. REcreate Designs is a member of 1% for the Planet, Sustainable Business Council, Made in Montana, Missoula Downtown Association, and a presenter of the MADE fairs- an alternative arts & craft market.

WHERE THE MAGIC HAPPENS

Once a one-person operation housed in an apartment base-ment, REcreate Designs has expanded into a larger production space in the foothills of the Mission Mountains in St. Ignatius, MT. We use industrial machinery and equipment to create a consistent and well-constructed product. We select, sort, and stow all of our materials within the studio and maintain a tidy workspace…most of the time.

1% for the Planet connects businesses, consumers, and non-profits, empowering all of us to drive big, positive change. Members donate at least 1% of sales to nonprofit partners they vetted for participation in the 1% for the Planet network.
