It gives me immense pleasure to write this message for yet another edition

of digital magazine Semester which is an effort. To publish a magazine con-

sistently within scarce resources is certainly a big achievement itself.

I hope that our students shall take full advantage of this commendable effort

of the team responsible for publishing this issue by reading, contributing in

matters of creative writing and moral support for it is one of the noblest

causes.

I want you all to have faith in your abilities because your abilities are of high

level. Trust your caliber because not everyone has a caliber as great as yours.

Continue doing the good work and you shall come out as winner.

With kindest regards.

What do you expect from the young genera-

tion, the graduates of QUEST Nawabshah in

general and Mechanical Engineering gradu-

ates in particular?

Actually, we hope that our students will try their best level to serve the nation and work for the prosperity of the nation.

What do you think about the standard of the

graduates passing from QUEST, Nawabshah?

Are they equipped enough with to compete

with graduates from other institutes?

Yes, we are very much confident that our graduates are in position to compete with graduates of other institutions. The syllabus which we are following here, that is accord-ing the international standards and the guide-lines of Higher Education Commission, Paki-stan.

What do you see the future of research at

the Department of Mechanical Engineering?

Now we are very much hopeful, because we have started the postgraduate courses, al-though the number of the registered stu-

dents is not up to that level which we are ex-pecting. But I am sure that by passage of the time, more students will come forward in the field of research. To some undergraduate level, we assign projects to the students to give them certain flavour of research. They are given guide lines to carry out research and complete their projects.

“We are very much

confident that our

graduates are in

position to compete

with graduates of

other institutions.”

What are the sectors in which some change

or modifications are needed, and what type

of changes to be made?

If you look at the general scenario, the factor

which we analyze is that the students lack the communication skills, for that it will be better to start debates, quiz competitions and semi-nar. These can be organized by students themselves; definitely the department will provide the platform and guide them to or-ganize the event successfully but more in-volvement of students is necessary to in-crease their confidence levels.

Do you see any improvement made in the

standard of education of QUEST over last

few years?

Improvement is a continuous process; you cannot compare it at any stage. We always hope for the improvement and say that there is a room for improvement. Yes, still lot of things to be done, particularly the attitudes of the students, and their inclination towards the studies. They are lacking and we need to motivate them, measure are required that majority of the students are motivated and to give them the environment that they feel re-laxed and stay interested in studies and extra-curricular activities.

Can you please suggest the undergraduates

to make them competitive in international

job market? How to sell themselves easily?

For international competitions, it is not cor-rect that our graduates are not getting the jobs in international organizations. It depends upon the individual capability and self confi-dence. The guidance and help required for a professional engineer is provided during their studies and afterwards at the University. The second point that the level of the knowledge, course, curriculum, we all trying our best to make it competitive with other institutes. Internet has made this world very small, and students are getting latest information about jobs, research, studentships and scholarships.

What do you expect from the current faculty

at the Department of Mechanical Engineer-

ing?

In current faculty, there is senior faculty as well as newly inducted young faculty. They are striving hard to improve the atmosphere of the department. I must say that to get maximum input from the faculty, it depends upon the students that how much they are interested. Students need not only motiva-tion but also their will to work and concentra-tion. In educational institutes, the student is the core, if the students are more interested towards the studies they will get more.

What do you feel when leaving QUEST after

serving for almost 37 years?

(Smiling), you know that it is a cycle; one has come to play his role. Definitely I have passed my 37 years at QUEST, Nawabshah, I feel diffi-cult to leave this place, at the same time, I am thankful to Almighty Allah that He gave cour-age and health that I have completed my ten-ure to my satisfaction. We have to follow the rules of nature.

What is your message and suggestions for

current students?

My message is clear to students that they must focus on their studies, because now this is the time that they must learn. You are in the professional institute; definitely they need market value which you can gain with the level of the knowledge provided at the insti-tute. The points which I have noted during my time at QUEST, that a small fraction of stu-dents take interest in the classroom during lectures. Without discussion they cannot gain the clear concepts. They lack the communica-tion skills; they are unable to express them-selves, they feel shy of asking questions. One should not worry that whether my question

Semester - Spring 2011 D e p a r t m e n t o f M e c h a n i c a l E n g i n e e r i n g

composition is right or wrong, still teacher understands you body language and question itself. They should improve the communica-tion skills. Just attending the classes is not sufficient; you should go through books, magazines, research papers, and internet. That will help you definitely to improve not your general knowledge but tell about the latest developments. Ethical values are also important along with the technical and gen-eral knowledge, so that you leave this insti-tute, you must be a perfect citizen, who knows social values along with professional ones.

ASME helps the global engineering commu-nity develop solutions to real world chal-lenges. Founded in 1880 as the American So-ciety of Mechanical Engineers, ASME is a not-for-profit professional organization that en-ables collaboration, knowledge sharing and skill development across all engineering dis-ciplines, while promoting the vital role of the

engineer in society. ASME codes and standards, publications, conferences, continuing education and pro-fessional development programs provide a foundation for advancing technical knowl-edge and a safer world.

ASME was founded in 1880 as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers; today's ASME promotes the art, science & practice of mechanical & multidisciplinary engineer-ing and allied sciences around the globe. The ASME Pakistan section was established in the year 2006 by a young emerging engi-neer from Lahore, Usman Bin Younos. ASME QUEST Chapter was inaugurated on August 11th, 2008. The Chapter initiated two types of memberships, International and Lo-cal. The establishment of ASME QUEST Chap-ter was highly appreciated by the Admini-stration of QUEST Nawabshah. In 2010 ASME QUEST organized di fferent pro-grammes; Student Design Contest was the first one being held and a seminar on the Safety and Security Exhibition. In February 2011 ASME QUEST organized Stu-dent Leadership Seminar.
