Blue bins and pre-loved sporting gear making a difference in rural Wa.

Your pre-loved and used sporting equipment can have the breath of new life in remote Western Australian communities and inspire an improved approach to health and fitness.

From the 29 July (beginning of Semester 2) until 23 August a large blue wheelie bin will be placed in the reception area of the uWA Recreation and Fitness centre so you can drop off any sporting gear you wish to donate thanks to Fair Game and uWA Sports.

Any basketballs, netballs, footy boots, cricket bats or other sporting equipment that is currently sitting unused in your closet can help facilitate fitness, health and wellbeing programs to under-serviced WA communities.

Through the provision of recycled sporting equipment, fitness and education, Fair Game reduces the

risk of lifestyle-related disease, builds social and community ties and improves mental wellbeing. They operate entirely on donations received in-kind from the community. Some staggering statistics have identified that only half of Australia’s school-aged children undertake the recommended level of physical activity, rendering them susceptible to many health conditions. These include diabetes, cardiovascular disease, breast and colon cancer and mental health conditions.

In 2012 Fair Game received over 6000 items and travelled nearly 9000km to conduct 47 sessions for 1271 children around the Perth metropolitan area and out into various remote communities of the Pilbara and Kimberley regions of WA. With your help and donations Fair Game hopes to continue building on their current program for 2013-2014.

For more information on Fair Game and how they support and inspire rural communities go to www.fairgamewa.org.

Get grooving to the charity beat with zumbathon!Shake your booty for Telethon at the uWA Recreation and Fitness centre on Saturday 17 August from 10am-2pm. come for as little or as long as you like. Professional instructors will be on hand throughout the event to show you the moves so you can lose yourself in the funky Latin rhythms and dance yourself fit!

There will be raffles, dance offs and other competitions to get everyone involved and other great ways to donate on the day, or make a donation at the uWA Recreation and Fitness centre reception in the week leading up to Zumbathon.

Entry is $10 per person at the door and all profits from the Zumbathon go direct to Telethon.

30:30 split classes now available at the UWa recreation and Fitness centre.

I have always been active; I played team sports (hockey, touch football, rugby union, netball, oztag) since my early teens. I grew up in a small country town with no gym and I didn’t have access to one until my early 20’s.

At around 23 I played some local representative hockey and then started to attend the gym on a semi regular basis to increase fitness levels. At 25 I started playing Rugby union and quickly realised I wasn’t as strong as I thought I was. That was when I started to get a little more serious about the gym.

The owner of the gym I attended approached me one day to ask if I’d be interested in being trained in BODYPuMP™ as they needed another instructor. It was something I had often thought about, but I was a very shy person back then so never dreamed I’d be capable.

The fact that group fitness classes don’t discriminate against size, age, experience or fitness level is something that I love, and there is always someone to motivate you and do the thinking for you. Plus they are fun.

When it comes to delivering those classes, you need to be natural. Be yourself. I care about my participants’ backgrounds, current situation and goals and I try to be a role model and lead by example.

But you still need to know your stuff and be able to adapt your class to your participants.

It’s not always easy, but as with anything you just have to make time. Some days are a real challenge, both time and energy wise. I have recently been introduced to meditation as a way to calm my body and mind and create a little more balance. I have found this has been extremely beneficial.

At the end of the day, allowing myself to be human lets me deal with my body image. Finding the things that make me happy and the things that inspire me to be a better person.

My favourite thing to tell people is that I am totally awesome. It has become a bit of a friendly joke now, but I love sharing my awesomeness. We all have our own awesomeness and we all have the ability to share it.

Scott White has been pulling back the string on a bow since the age of 8, when he first gravitated towards the sport at a YMcA camp. Now he’s sharpening up the skills of new crops of archers. We caught up with Scott and fire off a few questions on just why everyone is so keen on bows and arrows again.

Q: You started archery at a young age, what made you gravitate towards the sport? A: It was a sport that, as a dyslexic, helped with my hand eye coordination and muscle control. If you want to succeed you need to practice as often as you can, it takes a high level of concentration and focus, and single mindedness to want to win. When I was shooting in competitions I would practice 3 or more hours a day and longer on the weekends.

The best training method I found is ‘learn by doing’. People learn best by doing.

Q: Bows are prominent in medieval movies, but recently we’ve seen quite a few modern day archers on the screen, particularly with young adult films like the avengers and the Hunger Games. Why do you think archery continues to feature so strongly in pop

culture? A: Because it reconnects us to our basic hunter gatherer side. As we get further away from that part of our nature we have a need to find a way to feel connected to it. Archery has that ability to do that

Q: can people expect to learn to shoot like Katniss in your course? or are these movies all show and no skill?A: Katniss was taught by her father at a young age in the book but she had to start at the beginning like everyone else. Starting young helps but time spent practicing helps more.

That said, movies are mostly rubbish with a little bit of fancy shooting. You cannot fire two arrows at once, but you can ‘robin hood’ an arrow (which is where you shoot one arrow into the back of another) but you can’t split it.

Q: If not towards a successful movie career, where can people expect archery to take them? It’s an olympic sport, but what other branches in competition, social, or recreational archery are there?A: ArcheryWA runs competitions about once every 2 months, the Australian titles are held yearly. There is also a world competition. Archery is well-known and

respected, so it needs to be well taught. There are a lot of fundamentals that come before all the movie stuff, a lot of safety training too. The Archery centre has been teaching archery for 20+ years and I have been a full time coach for over 8 years; we have an impeccable safety record. come along and have fun learning a new skill or improve the skills you already have.

Bush Biking with SMUwords Lizzy Alderson photos Hong Taa

Getting outdoors and into the very fresh winter air has only been a

small part of the experience for the leaders who took part in week

long outdoor expeditions as part of the uWA Leadership Program.

Together with students from Singapore Management university

(SMu), a group of uWA students mountain biked their way from

Albany to Mundaring along the Munda Biddi trail, and have come

back with more scrapes and bruises than they left with, but many a

good story to tell from the trip. Lizzy Alderson catches us up on her

ride.

Page 27: Recreate Sem2 Winter Magazine

We even successfully convinced them to watch out for ‘drop bears’...”

The Munda Biddi trail was opened in April of this year and covers 1000km of beautiful south-west scenery traversing from Albany to Mundaring. The newly opened trail presented a fantastic challenge for a week long trip for myself, four students from Singapore Management university and callum and Michael from uWA Sports.

We started our journey in Albany and cycled between 35-65km each day, passing giant tingle trees, dodging the rain and slowly grinding our way up some nice steep hills before ending our trip outside Warpole.

The trip was a great challenge for the group to accommodate a variety of different cycling abilities and the rest of the group was very patient with my lack of mountain biking prowess! The group really came together throughout the

week and conversation ranged from hearing all about Singapore and arguing about the state of the Eagles and Dockers in the AFL.

We were blessed with some fantastic weather that allowed us to enjoy all the amazing south-west scenery and show our Singaporean guests kangaroos, emus and possums. We even successfully convinced them to watch out for ‘drop bears’.

The nights got fairly cold but the new Munda Biddi huts were in fantastic condition and were a

welcome sight after a long day’s cycling.

We Australians were amazed on the first night of the trip when the Singaporean students whipped out steaks, eggs and broccoli as the panniers were fairly small and the less weight the better! Suffice to say their meal looked far more appetising then my two minute noodles.

I’m looking forward to building on the relationship with SMu and getting prepared for the next leg of the Munda Biddi trail!

Ultra trail Blazingby Nicole West

Australia has claimed her as one of its own, but Bernadette Benson has made Australia hers, having challenged herself to one of the toughest initiations, taking on the 1000km Bibbulmun Track in an astonishing 15 days 9 hours and 48 minutes. To put it in perspective, someone walking the track covers the 1000km distance in 6-8 weeks, and Bernadette smashed the previous record by 1 day! Since becoming an Australian citizen in November of 2012 Bernadette has broken plenty of

Australian and canadian records while competing in the IAu World 24 hour championships (yes, that means running for 24 hours!) in Steenbergen, Netherlands (May 2013). She is now part of the Australian team and says there is a still a ‘friendly rivalry’ with her home country of canada.

As an ultra runner, registered psychologist and uWA PhD candidate Bernadette seems to have a lot on her plate, but she will tell you she craves and is always

searching for ‘the challenge’. “I love challenge in my life… so with the running it just became another way to find a challenge.” When asked why she chose the Bibbulmun track, Bernadette replied “it’s an iconic thing… it’s ‘the trail’ that the few ultra runners around here always whispered about… ‘how fast can you do the Bibbulmun?’”.

On 1 November 2011 Bernadette set out with her partner and only support crew Rolf to run the full length of the track from the northern terminus at Kalamunda to the southern finishing point at Albany to raise money and awareness for Inclusion WA. With a brief stop on Day 13 in Denmark for scans and xrays on her ankles and shins and being diagnosed with compartment syndrome, Bernadette was able to battle on through days 14 and 15, finishing on 15 days 9 hours in the heart of Albany.

Bernadette Benson, champion ultra runner.

Page 29: Recreate Sem2 Winter Magazine

Bernadette describes the experience as “so, so brutal. One of the things I particularly loved about it, it broke our world down into all that mattered… all of a sudden your world was about eating, sleeping and listening to the birds.”

More recently in the Netherlands during the World 24 hour championships, mind over matter came into play more strongly than most people would initially think. Overcoming back spasms, weather conditions (3 degreesc, rain and hail), limited breaks and no sleeping, maybe only a psychologist can understand the headspace competitors need to be in to compete let alone complete a 24 hour running

event. Even the little things need to be strategised; which shoes to wear, when to schedule food, water and rest breaks, how to best communicate with the support group and setting small milestones where 2 minutes can mean giving your competitors an unattainable lead. “A couple weeks as it (competition) gets close… I start looking a lot more at the nitty gritty… all that comes into play…I mean even the toilet stops are all planned in… as soon as you stop for a minute like that someone is past you and there goes your lead.” Bernadette was able to combat all the challenges of mind, body and spirit to complete the race and set five Australian Women’s 40 age-group records and three canadian records including running the furthest distance (216.343km) for a canadian woman of any age in a 24 hour period (Open, 24 hour Record). When you think about running 216km in 24 hours it seems superhuman, but this truly remarkable feat is now another notch on her belt for this 40-something ‘canAussie’.

What is next for this challenge junkie? The Swiss competitions of the 78km Swissalpine in July and the IronTrail 201km in August. Bernadette is also committed to building participation in the sport, which has exploded over the past 1-2 years and creating more ultra running and trail competitions in south-west WA.

When asked if she would consider tackling the Bibbulmun track again after everything it did to her body and mind, Bernadette smiled, laughed and said “if somebody goes out and beats my record… I will go back and reclaim it.”

[the Bibbulmun trail] is really, really unique. the more i have learnt about it, to have such a well marked, well maintained and continuous trail with all the shelters there, it is really quite special.”

The 2013 World 24 hour championships Australian Team

A fencer from age 11, Zak Leonhard has grown up to become one of uWA’s most accomplished athletes. With excellent results in local, state, and national competitions and representing Australia as part of the Australian Fencing Team, Zak now heads out to Kazan, Russia, as part of the Australian team for the World university Games (WuG).

Q: What got you involved in fencing and from what age did you start getting serious? A: My first experience at fencing was when I attended the Kids Sports holiday Program at uWA when I was 11. I then joined my local fencing club, Excalibur. I began competing in State competitions when I was 12. At the age of 15 I competed in my first national competition in Sydney and finished in 5th place. This experience led to me increasing my training and commitment to fencing, and at 16 I represented Australia at the commonwealth Junior Fencing championships in Penang, Malaysia.

Q: How are you feeling about the WUG? A: I am excited about going to the WuG and seeing a new part of the world in Kazan, Russia. I am

looking forward to testing myself in a strong competition against some of the best fencers from all over the world. Q: How strong is the competition? How do you think you will go? A: I am expecting a lot of fierce competition at the WuG. Many of the fencers at the WuG have sports scholarships that support their fencing training and development, and some have gone onto fence at Olympic level.

Q: What has been your main focus leading up to the WUG? A: As a member of the Australian Fencing Team I have attended national training camps and competitions so I have been in full training mode this year. I train 5 days a week (around my study and work commitments).

Q: What do you think you will take away most from the experience of representing australia in the WUG? What’s your next goal? A: I look forward to the challenge. high level competition will be of great value to my own development as a fencer.

In the lead up to WuG I competed at the National Fencing

competition in Brisbane placing second in Men’s Sabre and at the beginning of June the Asian Fencing championships in Shanghai. Following the WuG I will compete in the world Fencing championships in Budapest, hungary.

Fencing at the WuG is the penultimate experience in fencing, the ultimate being the Olympics. I have thoroughly enjoyed my experiences with the Australian Fencing Team in the last four years competing in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Jursey (uK), Indonesia and china. I look forward to competing at the WuG and making connections with other university students around the world.
