Dengue Prevention
This photograph shows a mother applying mosquito
repellent to her childs skin in order to prevent mos-
quitoes from biting.
How to reduce your risk of dengue infection:There is no vaccine available against dengue, and there are no specific medicationsto treat a dengue infection. This makes prevention the most important step, and pre-vention means avoiding mosquito bites if you live in or travel to an endemic area.
The best way to reduce mosquitoes is to eliminate the places where the mosquitolays her eggs, like artificial containers that hold water in and around the home. Out-doors, clean water containers like pet and animal watering containers, flower planterdishes or cover water storage barrels. Look for standing water indoors such as invases with fresh flowers and clean at least once a week.
The adult mosquitoes like to bite inside as well as around homes, during the day andat night when the lights are on. To protect yourself, use repellent on your skin whileindoors or out. When possible, wear long sleeves and pants for additional protec-tion. Also, make sure window and door screens are secure and without holes. Ifavailable, use air-conditioning.
If someone in your house is ill with dengue, take extra pre-cautions to prevent mosquitoes from biting the patient andgoing on to bite others in the household. Sleep under amosquito bed net, eliminate mosquitoes you find indoorsand wear repellent!

History of Rotary in the British Isles
WHY BRITAIN IS DIFFERENT
In 1914 the Rotary Clubs then in existence in the British Isles
gether and formed the British Association of Rotary Clubs. next 5 years the Great War created a barrier between the exBARC and the American based International Association. WBARC was dedicated to standardising Rotary principles antices, it did not affiliate to the American association. Althougcommunication and interchange of personnel during the wawas possible, effectively the British Clubs developed their owof operating. For example some met fortnightly ratheweekly. The BARC had its own secretariat and officers servneeds of British Rotary.
During the war, the original boostering nature of many of thwas replaced by social welfare policies aiding both the troopseas and the home front. When the war ended and commuwith North America again became normal and easy, the Britiswere operating in a parallel but separate way. and saw no rejoin their fellow Rotarians in North America, or adopt, what thas North American ways.
In 1921, the RI Convention was held in Edinburgh, Scotland, was agreed that where a country had at least 25 clubs, the
y to become an administrative unit within RI The BARC at once applied and in 1922, under the name of Rotary al Association for Britain and Ireland, RIBI was accepted as a territorial administrative unit, albeit with some ruems at variance with practice elsewhere. Some clubs for example close during the summer vacation.
w years later in 1927, RI decided that there would be no more similar units and over the years there have even bpts to end RIBIs status. While some RI nomenclature was adopted, RIBI has club councils rather than boards o and similarly districts have councils too made up of elected representatives from all clubs. RIBI has its own finanTreasurer, C.E.O and President; in Alcester it has its own offices too. RGHF senior historian Basil Lewis,UK,

In Rotary, we mark August as Member-ship and Extension Month. There is agood reason why we remind ourselves ofthe importance of membership early inevery Rotary year: because the job of
growing our membership is one that wecan never begin too soon. It is also a jobthat we can never stop working on. In or-der to keep serving, Rotary always needsto be growing!
e have talked for many years about the importance of themily of Rotary. In this Rotary year, I want to make not juste family of Rotary, but our own Rotary families, a priority inr membership. After 37 years of following me in Rotary, myfe, Corinna, finally became a Rotarian last year. We at-nded the chartering of a new club in Taiwan together, ande said, "It's time for me to become a Rotarian too!" So she
ned that club. And soon, so did a lot of other people. Nowat club has 102 members, and it's the second-largest clubTaiwan.
viting our spouses into Rotary isn't just about getting ourmbers up. It addresses the reality that Rotary still has farore men as members than it does women, and that ismething we need to work on. When we bring more womeno Rotary, our clubs become more appealing to prospectivemale membersand become more productive as well.
his year we are going to have something new in Rotary: aembership support team pin. This means that if you invite aw member into Rotary, you get a special pin to wear withur Rotary gearwheel. But we all know that the job of grow-
g membership doesn't end when a new member joins. Itds only when a new member is enjoying being a Rotariand never wants to leave! And making sure that our clubs arejoyable places to be is a key part of growing membership.
eople come into Rotary for all kinds of reasons, but theyay because Rotary is fun to be a part of. So I want to remindof you to have fun in your clubs and your districts. Rotary
based on the idea that our service is more effective whene serve together with our friends. So let's enjoy our Rotary
rvice, share it with others, and Light Up Rotarytogether!

This is something that we as Rotarians cannot and will accept. We must continue until we finish the job.
