Billy Collins

Thesis statement:

“Take poetry off the shelves and into public life.” – Billy Collins

He captured the audience’s attention with humor in his introduction.

“I’m here to give you your recommended dietary allowance of poetry.” – Billy Collins

He maintained the engagement of the audience throughout his speech by presenting five animations based on his poems.

TED Talk Evaluation Presentation The TED Commandment

I think Billy Collins best followed in his speech is Commandment IV.

He shared his poems with the audience throughout his presentation and what his poems were based on.

Billy Collins remained positive in his attitude and was in good spirits throughout his presentation and sharing his poems with the audience. I would give the speech a 4 in terms of dynamism. I think he could’ve given more variety in his tone during his speech.

One of the tips Billy Collins used in his presentation was from Nancy Duarte rule number 3 which is, “Help them SEE what you’re saying.”

Billy Collins gave his presentation verbally, but half of the time during his speech he shows the audience the visually appealing animation films on the screen based on his poems.

What I’ve learned about delivery based on Billy Collins is to show imagery once and a while to help your audience understand what you’re saying during your speech. Also, to be engaging and have fun during your presentation.

Sir Ken Robinson and Billy Collins both provided humor into their introductions in their speeches. Making the audience laugh often during their speeches.

In Sir Ken Robinson’s first TED video, “School Kills Creativity”, he stands in front of the audience giving his speech directly. He doesn’t have any slides or imagery to help along with his presentation. He pretty much stands in one spot giving his lecture. Much like Billy Collins, who also stand in one place giving his address to the audience except he showed animations with his speech, unlike Sir Ken Robinson’s first video.

Sir Ken Robinson’s “School Kills Creativity” lecture, he gave his speech with high spirits, humor, and lots of energy when he speaks. Billy Collins, however, spoke monotone throughout his speech.

In Sir Ken Robinson’s second video presentation, “Changing Education Paradigms”, you don’t see Sir Ken Robinson giving the speech in person, he presents the speech by showing comic images while he gives the narration.

Both Sir Ken Robinson and Billy Collins provided visual and verbal presentations in their speeches. With Sir Ken Robinson’s two videos, he did one speech with just him talking in front of an audience and another with just his narration over an animation clip. While Billy Collins provided both verbal and visual presentation in just one speech.
