Glory to Christ our Saviour.

When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sad'ducees, they came together. And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, to test him."Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?" And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets.” Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, saying, "What do you think of the Christ? Whose son is he?" They said to him, "The son of David." He said to them, "How is it then that David, inspired by the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying, `The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, till I put thy enemies under thy feet’? If David thus calls him Lord, how is he his son?" And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did any one dare to ask him any more questions.

FROM THE RECTOR’S NOTEBOOK

Greetings:

“The outbreak of Ebola will eventually be stopped. It will extend for months longer than our attention span, but like previous instances of the disease, it will be extinguished. Yet the social conditions that allowed its spread will continue in every corner of the world.”

This is the view of Michael Rozier, S.J., a doctoral student in the Department of Health Management and Policy at the University of Michigan. in an article printed in a recent issue of America: The National Catholic Review.

Mr. Rozier in his article takes a look at the social, environmental, economic and political challenges that are often responsible for the spread of viruses. He notes that the effort should not be simply to find a cure of ebola as much as that is desired; but rather to end the contexts that cause such contagious diseases to regenerate in the first place.

He is of the view that often we fail to appreciate how involved we all are and how responsible we all are, for the social conditions that foster disease along the way.

By now we should be aware as to how ebola is transmitted. It is a frightening disease and its mortality rate is formidable; yet we have to ask ourselves how much has the twenty-four hour news media has contributed to the terror of this malady. International media will hold onto this until some other event comes along that takes up their attention.

When we examine the life of Jesus, we see his care and compassion towards those who were sick and vulnerable. He has left his this tradition of love and care for others that we must take seriously.

Ours is still the task of seeking the kind of society that our Saviour urged us to promote. One in which we care for each other and look out for each other following the rules and laws of sacred texts.

If we were to really follow the sacred writings of the major world religions, along with the various signed treaties we may very well be able to prevent some of the major crises.

Rosier is convinced that the potential for global outbreaks will continue to occur until we resolve issues such as a greater sharing of the world’s wealth, ensuring that we all have access to clean water and relieving the necessity for persons to seek food in unhealthy and unsanitary conditions and putting in place policies to ensure that there is no long term unemployment.

This is not all a pipe dream, Jesus spoke to this in the 1st century in St. Matthews 25: 31-46 (The Gospel reading for Proper 29). Verses 44-45 reads

Then they also will answer, `Lord, when did we see thee hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to thee?' Then he will answer them, `Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.'

Let us pray for an end to the ebola virus; but moreso, let us pray that we may stave off the conditions that give rise to such diseases.

Health Corner There are four (4) number stages of breast cancer. The staging is based on a number of factors including:

➢ The size of the tumour within the breast

➢ The number of lymph nodes affected

➢ Whether the tumour has spread to any other parts of the body

Here is a brief look at stages 1 and 2:

STAGES 1 & 2

The cancer cells are confined to a very limited area.

Stage 1 is divided into 1A and 1B:

Stage 1A - Tumour is 2cm or smaller and has not spread outside the breast.

Stage 1B -No tumour or tumour is 2cm or smaller and a few cancer cells are found in the lymph nodes close to the breast.

STAGE 2

Breast cancer is still in earlier stage but there is evidence that the cancer has begun to grow or spread.

Stage 2 is divided into IIA and IIB:

Stage IIA - No tumour or a tumour 2cm or smaller in the breast and cancer cells are found in 1 to 3 lymph nodes in the armpit or in the lymph nodes near the breastbone.

OR

The tumour is larger than 2cm but not larger than 5cm and there is no cancer in the lymph nodes.

Stage IIB - The tumour is larger than 2cm but not larger than 5cm and small areas of cancer cells are in the lymph nodes. 

OR

The tumour is larger than 2cm but not larger than 5cm and the cancer has spread to 1 to 3 lymph nodes in the armpit or to the lymph nodes near the breastbone.

OR

The tumour is larger than 5cm and has not spread to the lymph nodes. Next week: Stages 3 & 4 of breast cancer

Ss Simon & Jude (Apostles)

Tuesday October 28 is the Feast of Ss. Simon & Jude, two members of the Twelve.

They were among those called by Jesus first as disciples and then sent out to bear witness to the Paschal Mystery of our Lord’s crucifixion, resurrection, ascension and the coming of the Holy Spirit.

Simon was surnamed the Zealot for his rigid adherence to the Jewish law and to the Canaanite law.

Western tradition is that he preached in Egypt and then went to Persia with St. Jude, where both suffered martyrdom.

St. Jude, known as Thaddaeus, was a brother of St. James the Less, and perhaps a relative of Our Saviour.

He is an author of an epistle (letter) to the Churches of the East, particularly the Jewish converts, directed against certain heresies.

Jude is invoked in desperate situations because his New Testament letter stresses that the faithful should persevere in the environment of harsh, difficult circumstances, just as their forefathers had done before them.

Little else is known about these two heroes of the faith; nevertheless we pray for the grace to imitate their courage.
