LECTORS & INTERCESSORS AT MASS TODAY

THE COLLECT Let your continual mercy, O Lord, cleanse and defend your Church; and, because it cannot continue in safety without your help, protect and govern it always by your goodness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.. Amen.

THE FIRST READING: READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book

of Nehemiah Chapter 9 beginning at the 16th verse

Ezra said, "O Lord our God, our fathers acted presumptuously and stiffened their neck and did not obey thy commandments; they refused to obey, and were not mindful of the wonders which thou didst perform among them; but they stiffened their neck and appointed a leader to return to their bondage in Egypt. But thou art a God ready to forgive, gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and didst not forsake them. Even when they had made for themselves a molten calf and said, `This is your God who brought you up out of Egypt,' and had committed great blasphemies, thou in thy great mercies didst not forsake them in the wilderness; the pillar of cloud which led them in the way did not depart from them by day, nor the pillar of fire

by night which lighted for them the way by which they should go. Thou gavest thy good Spirit to instruct them, and didst not withhold thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst.

Reader: Here ends the Reading. ALL: Thanks be to God. PSALM 78: 14-20, 23-25 14. He led them with a cloud by day, * and all the night

through with a glow of fire. 15. He split the hard rocks in the wilderness* and gave them

drink as from the great deep. 16. He brought streams out of the cliff, * and the waters

gushed out like rivers. 17. But they went on sinning against him,* rebelling in the

desert against the Most High. 18. They tested God in their hearts,* demanding food for their

craving. 19. They railed against God  and  said,*  “Can  God  set  a  table  in

the wilderness? 20. True, he struck the rock, the waters gushed out, and the

gullies overflowed;* but is he able to give bread or to provide meat for his people?"

23. So he commanded the clouds above* and opened the doors of heaven ..

24. He rained down manna upon them to eat* and gave them grain from heaven.

25. So mortals ate the bread of angels;* he provided for them food enough.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son;*and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now:*and shall be forever. Amen

THE EPISTLE A Reading from the Word of God written in the Letter to the Romans Chapter 8 beginning at the 35th verse Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, "For thy sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered." No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Reader: Here ends the Reading. ALL: Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Glory to Christ our Saviour.

Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a lonely place apart. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. As he went ashore he saw a great throng; and he had compassion on them, and healed their sick. When it was evening,

the disciples came to him and said, "This is a lonely place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves." Jesus said, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat." They said to him, "We have only five loaves here and two fish." And he said, "Bring them here to me." Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass; and taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

FROM  THE  RECTOR’S  NOTEBOOK Greetings: Let  me  begin  by  thanking  my  colleagues  the  Very  Rev’d  William  Dixon,  CBE who was Priest-in-Charge   while   I   was   on   holiday   and   the   Rev’d  Canon Dr. Winston Layne for ensuring that a priestly ministry was maintained in the parish. Special thanks must also go out to the Wardens, the Parish Secretary, Chalice Assistants, and all others who gave tremendous support in the daily  life  and  work  of  the  St.  David’s  parish. Let me extend condolences to those who would have lost loved ones during the past month; please be assured that my prayers are with you and  that  by  God’s  grace,   I  will  be  visiting  with  you  during  the  coming  week. Continual prayers for those who are sick whether at home or in hospital that God almighty will give strength, courage and patience; both to the sick and those who watch over them. I am aware that many members of our congregation are away on holiday and we pray for their safe return to these shores, as they come back to us with new and fresh experiences. Vacation time is quite useful and valuable as an opportunity to generally  clear  one’s  calendar  and  with  no  appointments   to   just   take  each day as it comes, and do some light reading. For us as priests it gives a chance to sit with family in the pew during Sunday  Mass  and  listen  to  colleagues  as  they  bring  God’s  message  to  the respective congregations. In our parish there remains lots of work to be done and many persons are busy preparing for various events as we head towards the fourth quarter of the year.

Immediately on our doorstep there is the upcoming concert to be held on Saturday August 30th in the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Center and of course the duty for us is to assist in the sale of tickets and of course to be present for the event. The events in any of our parishes can be successful if every member becomes involved. Let us continue to give thanks for our common life together as we pledge  our  support  to  God’s  ministry  in  our  parish. Your friend and priest, Noel A. Burke, MA, (The  Rev’d  Canon) Rector

health corner Let week we dealt with the highly nutritious leafy vegetable, kale, but many persons had never heard about it. Some persons were skeptical about ways of preparing it. Go to your supermarket, purchase a small amount and try this simple recipe to whet your appetite! potatoes with kale

Ingredients 1 pound medium English potatoes

4 cups shredded kale 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

1 large onion, chopped Salt to taste

Instructions 1. Cover the potatoes with water and boil them until tender. Peel while hot, then cool in cold water and drain. Cut into thick slices. Refrigerate if you are cooking the potatoes in advance. 2. Just before serving, wash the kale, drain, and remove the stems and midribs. Stack leaves, roll up lengthwise, and shred crosswise. 3. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil and add the onion. Sauté over medium-high heat, stirring, until onion just begins to brown.

4. Add kale, tossing it about until it all wilts. Reduce heat to medium and stir-fry kale for 5 minutes. 5. Add the potatoes and cook until they are heated through. Season to taste and serve. Adopted from www.drweil.com
