Musical Outreach committee: As a part of our outreach ministries we are forming acommittee that would support outside performing groups who wish to use our sanctuary.Among other things, we would act as liaisons between the groups and the church, helpingfacilitate practices and coordinating events . At this mornings 9:15 Forum Mother Susan will discuss the language of worship. In recentyears, the national church has published a number of resources to supplement the liturgy foundin the Book of Common Prayer . During the first half of Pentecost we have been using materialfrom Enriching Our Worship replacing the BCP Eucharistic Prayer. At the forum we have anopportunity to talk about our responses to this newer material. Please join in.

Ministry Outreach: Finding our Ministries and affirming the Ministries we already dostarting tomorrow, Monday, September 8. Join Anne Pierson at either noon or 5:30 p.m. in thechapel for discussion and work on finding our various ministries. Sessions will continue twicea month through December and then pick up in January.

Quilters Plus: The first meeting of the season has been moved to Wednesday, September 10 at9:00 a.m. Bring a project to work on or just come to share a cup of tea and conversation!

The quilting session will be followed by the ECW Eucharist and Healing Service at 11:00a.m. and the ECW Meeting at 11:45 a.m. as ECW also will have their first meeting of theseason. Sister Diana will talk about her summer field work at the U.C. Davis Medical Centerin Sacramento, about her ordination to the Diaconate and her future plans. All parishioners men and women alikeare enthusiastically encouraged to attend. Come, share, and welcomeSister Diana back to Christ Church.

We need help to provide coffee, snacks and lunch for the Mutual Ministry Review withCanon Britt on Saturday, September 20. Roughly two dozen people will be taking part in theall day MMR. Also help is needed to provide a light supper for those who are taking part in therehearsal for Sister Dianas ordination to the transitional Diaconate and for a reception after

the ordination. The rehearsal will be at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 2 and the receptionwill follow the 7:00 p.m. ordination. Please see or call Lin Chase if you can help. St. John Chrysostoms feast day is September 13. John was called "Chrysostom" ("Golden

Mouth") because of his eloquence. He was a priest of Antioch, and an outstanding preacher.(Audiences were warned not to carry large sums of money when they went to hear him speak,since pickpockets found it very easy to rob his hearers -- they were too intent on his words tonotice what was happening.) His sermons are mostly straightforward expositions of HolyScripture (he has extensive commentaries on both Testaments, with special attention to theEpistles of Paul), and he emphasizes the literal meaning, whereas the style popular atAlexandria tended to read allegorical meanings into the text. He loved the city and people ofAntioch, and they loved him. However, he became so famous that the Empress atConstantinople decided that she must have him for her court preacher, and she had himkidnapped and brought to Constantinople and there made bishop. This was a failure all around.

His sermons against corruption in high places earned him powerful enemies (including theEmpress), and he was sent into exile, where he died. Along with Athanasius of Alexandria,Basil the Great, and Gregory of Nazianzus, he is counted as one of the Four Great Eastern (orGreek) Doctors of the Ancient Church. The Four Great Western (or Latin) Doctors areAmbrose, Jerome, Augustine, and Gregory the Great.
