From The Pastor

Notes about SVD & SSpS Missionaries

Religion and science have intertwined in the Society of the Divine Word Father, Jean Ikanga’s life. It all began with a frightened mother. A woman who lived back in Fr. Ikanga’s native Congo desperately wanted some measure of comfort for her nine-year old daugh-ter, who was “sick with evil spirits”. Fr Ikanga was greatly troubled by her story, for whom he offered his prayer and counselling. But he also arranged for the woman and her daughter to see a psychiatrist whom he knew at the University of Kinshasa. They agreed, and gradually, over a series of meetings, the “spirits” that had plagued the child were revealed to be a form of post-traumatic stress syndrome. This was the result of the girl having seen her father murdered, then wit-nessing the rape of her mother, and then being raped herself. This was followed by many other forms of violence at the hands of both the rebels and govern-ment forces. This was Fr Ikanga’s first exposure to the mystery of the brain and how it processes what goes on inside the body. And it led to a strong desire to learn more about the enigmas of modern science and medicine in the service of the Gospel. All of this set him on a convoluted path that eventually led to the Medical School of Emory University in Atlanta.

Fr. Ikanga started his studies of medicine in 2006 at Regis University in Denver. Step by step his knowledge grew along with the yearning to put this knowledge of science and medicine to use in the ser-vice of the gospel. The final lap in his quest led him to do his three years of internship and residency at Emory University. Now, after more than a decade of scientific and medical training in the United States, Fr Ikanga has become a notable neuropsychologist and a research fellow at Emory. But unlike so many of his learned colleagues, Fr Ikanga has not put faith aside in favor of science and isn’t interested in science for sci-ence’ sake—he has discovered the complementarity of the two—that faith and science can and must build on one another.

Fr. Ikanga, now 45, resides at Holy Spirit Parish in Atlanta and, when not assisting at local parishes in Atlanta, sees his flock of doting patients at the Emory

University School of Medicine. In the Congo there are very few clinicians available to help the thousands upon thousands of people who are living with the resi-due of horrific violence. Fr Ikanga will soon return to his country where he will be the only neuropsycholo-gist serving a population of 67.5 million people, 50 percent of whom are Catholic. The Congo is Africa’s most Catholic country, about one-quarter the size of the United States (or everything west of the Rockies). Fr Ikanga’s lofty goal is to lay the foundation for a new program in neuropsychology at the Catholic Uni-versity of St. Augustine in Kinshasa.

Sr Veronika Rackova, SSpS (The Sister Servants of the Holy Spirit) was shot dead on May 21st 2016 by government soldiers at her mission station in South Sudan. She was shot while driving a vehicle in re-sponse to urgent medical needs of the people she served. The SSpS sisters of Slovakia recently remem-bered the anniversary of her life given for the mis-sions at their provincial house in Ivanka pri Nitre. Her own beloved sister Pavla was present at the ser-vice along with many SSpS and SVD confreres. After a short introduction by Sr Lucia Slusna, SSpS, the provincial of Slovak Province, and a presentation on the missionary path and final journey of Sr. Veronika, Fr. Pavol Krutak, SVD, opened the solemn Mass with this question: “Are we praying for Sr. Veronica, or are we rather giving thanks for the gift of her testimony? Her faithfulness challenges all of us in our readiness to put Christ first in our lives, even if it means facing up to the risk of ‘losing’ this earthly life” (Mark 8:35). Her humanitarian and dedicated service to the needy people of South Sudan was recently recognized by the government of the Slovak Republic. The Minister of Foreign Affairs presented the award, “In Memoriam”, on April 10 to the SSpS provincial, Sr. Lucia Slusna. The award, shows a heart on the palm of a hand, and this quite magnificently expresses what Sr. Veronika has given to the people of South Sudan through her dedicated service at the Medical Centre of St. Bakhita in Yei.

Ethnic Potluck Luncheon after the 10:00am Mass - Parish Hall

We thank everyone who participated and provided a dish to share for the potluck.

Great experience to share your culture and food with your faith community!

Pentecost 50 days after Easer, is the day on which, promised by Christ, the Holy Spirit was poured out on the

Apostles and disciples in the form of tongues of fire. We are now called to spread that light.

Daily Prayer for Our Priests O Jesus, I pray for your faithful and fervent priests; for your unfaithful & tepid priests; for your priests laboring at home or abroad in distant mission fields; for your tempted priests; for your lonely & desolate priests; for your young priests; for your dying priests; for the souls of your priests in Purgatory. But above all, I recommend to you the priests dearest to me: the priest who baptized me, the priests who absolved me from my sins, the priests at whose Masses I assisted & who gave me Your body & blood in Communion, the priests to whom I am indebted any other way especially (name….) O Jesus, keep them all close to your heart, and bless them abundantly in time & in eternity. Amen. --St. Therese of Lisieux
