Pentecost Sunday (Cycle C) Pastor’s Corner Today we celebrate the feast of Pentecost, the final fulfillment
of various prophecies that announced the coming of the Spirit,
such as the Prophet Ezekiel, who proclaimed: “I will put my
spirit within you and make you live by my statutes, careful to
observe my decrees.” John the Baptist had announced that the
Messiah would “baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” Jesus
himself confirmed this promise when he said “John baptized
with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the
Holy Spirit.” Pentecost is the crowning of the Passover of
Christ, because the Lord himself wanted the Holy Spirit to
complete his work on earth.
My sincere appreciation and congratulations to the group of
men who traveled recently to Cuba at the invitation of the
Diocese of Santa Clara for the first Emmaus retreat ever in
the island. Fr. Federico

Mary, the mother of God, is our mother, too. Just as Mary gave us Jesus through God’s grace, so Jesus in turn gave Mary to the Church when he said to the beloved disciple, “Behold, your mother” (Jn 19:27)...In the gift of Mary’s motherhood, the Christian welcomes the mother of God “into his own home.” Christ personally hands over his mother to each individual on Calvary in the person of the beloved disciple… No matter how lost we are, no matter how conflicted, no matter how troubled, we are hopeful in the knowledge that we have been given a mother who loves us with a constant, undying love. We can withstand whatever befalls us because Mary is our mother. To be totally human we need a mother to love us who is the mother of God. Jesus knew this when, from the cross, he gave his mother into the keeping of the beloved disciple and, in doing so, gave her to the Church for all time. In turn, whenever Mary loves us, she gives us Jesus.

The Jubilee of Mercy El Jubileo de la Misericordia
May the message of mercy reach everyone, and may no one be indifferent to the call to experience mercy. I direct this invitation to conversion even more fervently to those whose behavior
distances them from the grace of God… Do not fall into the terrible trap of thinking that life depends on money and that, in comparison with money, anything else is devoid of value or dignity. This is nothing but an illusion! We cannot take money with us into the life beyond. Money does not bring us happiness. Violence inflicted for the sake of amassing riches soaked in blood makes one neither powerful nor immortal. Everyone, sooner or later, will be
subject to God’s judgment, from which no one can escape. Pope Francis
Bull Misericoridae Vultus, No. 19
Papa Francisco

BOOK NOOK Recommendation for this week:
Dear Pope Francis: The Pope Answers Questions from Children Around the World, Loyola Press, $18.95 Pope Francis reads and answers letters and drawings from more than 250 children at Jesuit ministries all over the world. “These are tough questions!” said the Pope. But he was not deterred from the challenge. Reading this book, perhaps with a child, can help us along the path to Jesus.

The eighth grade students recently paid tribute to their parents at the annual Parent
Appreciation Dinner. This was a unique opportunity for students to thank their
parents for helping them throughout their years at St. Hugh and along their journey in
life and faith.
The students decorated the Parish Hall and waited on the tables. After the meal, they
shared their thoughts and showed a beautiful slide show they had created that
stressed their relationship with their parents. The parents and students had a great
time and event got to enjoy some time on the dance floor together.
The St. Hugh School community gathered in church on May 5th for the May Crowning
and Mother’s Day Para liturgy as we honored Our Blessed Mother and our early
mothers in prayer. The second grade students walked in procession carrying roses
and placed them at the foot of the statue of Mary. Song and prayers were recited in
Her honor and a decade of the rosary was prayed. Four of our Middle School danc-
ers also performed a beautiful liturgical dance. During the ceremony, three eighth grade girls, who were chosen by their peers, crowned the statue of Mary with a
wreath of flowers.
The students’ mothers and mother figures were especially recognized that day with a
video presentation, a packet of seeds, and a breakfast reception. It was a beautiful
celebration.

On Friday April 22nd, the parish hall was
transformed into a vibrant art gallery highlighting
the work produced by the students of Saint
Hugh. The artistic pieces were created
throughout the school year by students in
Kindergarten through eighth grade. The
students used a multitude of mediums including
drawing, painting, and sculptures. The amazing
and interactive art show was organized by our
art teacher, Catherine Pennekamp. This year
there was a very special prayer wall where guests
could add their own prayers as they viewed the
exhibits.
