Narrabeen Sport and Recreation Excursion Students from the Tutorial Program went on a three day excursion to the Blue Mountains and the Narrabeen Sport and Recreational facility, where they participated in a High Rope course to challenge their fears and irrational thinking. They went on a cultural walk with an Aboriginal Elder through the cliff walks (giant staircase) and learnt about the significance of the plants and wild life. All students (who are pictured enjoying some of the activities) were engaged in the activities and had a wonderful time.

What U Say Online !!!

On Tuesday 21st March Year 8 students attended a workshop on cyber safety which was presented by Senior Constable, Craig Skene, our Schools Liaison Officer, based out of Dubbo. The students were captivated by Craig's ability to connect real life situations and stories to the use of technology.

During the workshop, Craig addressed such topics; as how to stay safe online, the safe use of apps and technology, including Facebook, SnapChat, Instagram and Messenger, the law and technology, and how to be smarter on social media. The students got a great deal of amazing information and we encourage them to practice what they have learned. At the of the day Craig said “the students were a fantastic crowd and behaved impeccably.”

Year 7 students will get the chance to do a similar workshop with Craig, later in the year.

What To See From Your SRC By Mia Cummins - SRC Publicity Officer

The SRC of 2016 and 2017 have already been super busy with fundraising, supporting the school, and developing leadership skills amongst the committee. So far already this year, we have done lots of great things:

We held the year 7 elections and announced Marley O’Shannessy and Nicholas Glasson as the 2 Yr 7 Representatives. This year saw a record 16 nominees for the Yr 7 reps.

On Valentine's Day, we spread the love by selling balloons and roses, raising $290 for the outdoor learning area.

Our ‘R U Ok’ community paintings, that were completed by staff and students last year, were put up in the canteen area to help raise awareness about mental health and, hopefully, make the students and staff of our school feel supported.

Our senior representatives reviewed and edited the schools bullying policy in conjunction with Mr Rhall.

In protest to the new rules of NAPLAN, in regards to the pressures being put on Year 9 students in relation to the new policy that says students must get a band 8 or higher to sit the HSC. We supported the NSW P & C driven petition and went around the school and gathered 300 signatures.

All of the SRC went to Orange for our annual leadership day, where we learned how to be inspiring leaders and the expectations we need to adopt to be an effective SRC. Issues were raised, and we are currently in the process of choosing issues that we think are viable and achievable. We also had some fun ten pin bowling.

At the Parkes High Open Night, students from the SRC guided the parents and potential students around the school and made them see how wonderful our school is.

Music on Fridays has continued, with Year 8 playing some great tunes last week and we are continuing to work in the canteen.

SRC students helped cook the BBQ for the Year 7 parents ‘meet the teacher’s’ evening

Year 12 students headed off to Sydney to attend a leadership course at Homebush to improve our leadership knowledge and skills. They are pictured (below right) over-looking the Blue Montains during their trip to Sydney.

Our school held a very successful day to support National ‘Bullying- No Way Day’. Students helped set up and decorate, hand out wristbands and ribbons, helped sell cupcakes (pictured below left) and sausage sandwiches and had music and skipping in the quad. Our Captain Yasmin also did a great job as MC for the official part of the day.

Year 10 students Nathan Hessel and Ethan Pay, made an ‘unreal’ wooden SRC suggestion box which is now located in the library for students to put ideas in to be taken to the SRC meetings.

Our Easter raffle was drawn on the 5th April. All proceeds are going to the development of our outdoor learning area.

And finally, the challenge has been set that each SRC rep has to try and learn every student’s name in their respective year. We have a few things planned coming up this term, including a paper aeroplane challenge, creating inspirational quotes for around the school, the captains are flying to Sydney to meet the governor and the Year 10 representatives will be attending an SRC week long camp. This year we are making sure that more and more students get leadership opportunities, so when we are organising SRC projects we are encouraging all students to get involved. We are continuing to strive to make our school even greater than it already is and to support our staff and students in order to make our school community a friendly and happy environment.

Recognition Assembly: Congratulations to the students who received recognition of their effort and achievement at our Assembly last Friday. We thank Councillor Barbara Newton who attended on behalf of Parkes Shire Council and helped to congratulate our Gold Pin recipient, Attelia Coghlan-Klein. The Student Representative Council (SRC) presented Student of the Term, Katie Webb, with her certificate. This is an initiative of the SRC students and is determined by the students of the school. Our Year 7 newly elected SRC students, Marley O’Shannessy and Nicholas Glasson and Year 10 SRC students, Phoebe Potts and Nathan Hessel, were inducted and presented with their badges. Kacey Nightingale was recognised by CHS School Sport for her representation in Squash at state level, and the senior SRC students were given certificates for their participation in a leadership course they attended in Sydney. The assembly also had the pleasure of two performances by Year 10 Music students, Tianna Simpson, Gracey Denham-Jones and Ty-James Logan. Councillor Newton, who sang with the Australian Opera, was very impressed by our talented students. NAPLAN: Please read the information on page eight in this newsletter for the upcoming NAPLAN assessments on May 9

th, 10

th and 11

th for Years 7 and 9 students. These assessments give us important information which we use to support

students in classes through our Learning and Support teachers. Class teachers also use this information for differentiation in the delivery of their lessons. Parent / Teacher Interviews: Students in Years 7 to 11 will receive their booking sheets for the upcoming parent teacher interviews being held on Tuesday 2

nd May in the LP Johnson Hall.

Recognition Excursions: Congratulations to the students in Years 8 and 9 who have been on the Recognition Excursions this term. I have had very positive feedback from members of the public on the exemplary behavior of our students. Interim Reports: Thank you for your patience in the delay in sending home the Interim Reports for Years 7 to 11. At this stage, every student should have received an Interim Report and taken it home and given it to their parents. I am interested in your feedback on these reports. Please call me at school on 6862 1844 if you would like to discuss any aspect of the report. Thank you to Mr Adam Currey for his work in resolving our technical issues. Important Dates: Please mark the following dates in your diary: Years 7-11 Parent Teacher interviews Tuesday 2nd May, 4 – 7pm in Hall; Cross Country Wednesday 3rd May and the Athletics Carnival Thursday 1st June. I have spoken to our students and explained that my expectations are they will be safe, respectful and responsible at school. I have also explained that this year, my priorities with the student body are attendance, adherence to wearing our school uniform and our student learning culture. Attendance: Our overall attendance rate is concerning. Students MUST be at school unless there is a justified reason to be absent. Please attempt to make appointments outside school hours whenever possible. School uniform: Our Parents and Citizens Association have worked tirelessly to ensure that our school uniform is sophisticated, functional and ensures students comply with safety regulations. Many items of our school uniform are now available through our front office. If parents or care providers are having difficulties in purchasing our school uniform, please contact me at school. At our last P&C meeting, our school uniform policy was tabled for discussion at the next meeting, as part of our three-year review cycle. Student learning culture: All our teachers are now undertaking professional learning in HOW2Learn. This stands for Higher Order Ways to Learn. Part of this process is to develop strategies students can use to support their own learning. Students need to be actively engaged in their learning to achieve subject specific learning outcomes and to progress along the learning continuum. Learning is a dynamic process and it needs to be continually practiced. Our next P&C Meeting for 2017: will be held in the Conference Room (just along the corridor from the front office) on Tuesday 23

rd May at 7.30 pm. I look forward to seeing all our new and continuing parents.

Please contact the school (6862 1844) or make an appointment if you need to discuss any aspect of your child’s education or if you need clarification on any issues or events your child may be involved in. Please be aware that all visitors to the school, including parents, must report to the office in Albert Street. At Parkes High School we are safe, respectful and responsible. New Look Aboriginal Learning Centre

The Aboriginal Education Support Learning Centre has moved and is having a revamp. Although very grateful for the new extended room, the walls were very dull and boring, so Katlyn Turnbull and Kyah Turnbull (pictured right) designed several Wiradjuri paintings to give the new office a more dynamic learning environment.

The artworks were inspired by animals and other Aboriginal art. Three artworks were designed, two for feature walls, and one for the door so it could be easily recognised by students and staff. The designs show Aboriginal women dancing on the grass underneath a tree, men hunting with spears and shields, and a brightly coloured meeting place symbol. Another painting, represents Wiradjuri animals, Wiradjuri words and handprints.

There are several animals displayed on this wall, including Gugubarra (Kookaburra ), Dinawan (Emu), Barrandhang (Koala) and the Wambuwuny (Kangaroo). The door showcases a Girrawaa (Goanna) on the Aboriginal flag, around the sun. Additionally, around all the walls are little yellow footprints which represent kangaroo, emu and possum.

The room is now vibrant and a great meeting place for all Indigenous and non Indigenous students.

The Townsend Memorial Scholarship

The Townsend Memorial Scholarship is available to students attending Parkes High School to assist students to complete a degree course of study at the University of NSW or University of Sydney in the faculty of Medicine,

Law, Dentistry, Architecture, Agriculture, Veterinary Science or Engineering.

Please see Mrs Carter to discuss your application.

CONNECT – THE POST BULLY PROJECT This term we have looked at all the connections we make at school and as part of this, and to contribute to the work of Bullying No Way Day, the Library instigated a project where students wrote their feelings about being bullied or being a bully onto postcards, which are now on display, anonymously, at Parkes Shire Library. We would like to thank PSL for displaying our student work, and urge you to visit them during the school holidays to see the conversation around bullying that your children have started.

THE OVERDUE BOOK PROCESS Because of several changes across the school this year, we are having some hiccups with Library overdue notifications. The process is: 1 week overdue: students receive green reminder notice from roll call teacher; 2 weeks overdue: students receive orange reminder notice from roll call teacher; 3 weeks overdue: a third notice plus a letter is sent home to parents asking for help in returning the resource.

When a student receives a reminder notice, the best thing to do is to speak to the Teacher Librarian, Ms Dawson - the student is not in any trouble and we can usually resolve the problem immediately. She is generally pretty friendly!

However, if a book is 5 weeks or more overdue, and hasn't been returned or paid for, the student is placed on a Purple Card and the No Go list, which may affect their participation in excursions etc.

BOOK SALE Last week we held a sale of books which had been culled from our collection over the past 2 years. We made $85 which will go toward a reward in term 3 for all those students who complete the Premier’s Reading Challenge.

Culling is a process all Libraries undergo to ensure their collection is up to date. The gold standard is to have a collection which is an average age of 10 years old or less, but there are always exceptions, like art and history books which are valuable well beyond this range. However, other topics, like science and computing, can be outdated after as little as one or 2 years (for example, remember when

Pluto was still a planet?)

In a school Library, it’s important that we provide our students & teachers with current information. Think of it like a pharmacist making sure the drugs they prescribe are not out of date…

Signing Your Child Out Of School For Appointments

If you send a note to the school in the morning we can have your child waiting at the

office for you to collect. This will save you time waiting for us to get them from

their class.

Please make sure you include your child’s full name on the note.
