PHS Girls Cricket Team Bowled Them Over

The Parkes High School Girls Open Cricket team won a comprehensive victory over Dubbo recently. The experience of team members varied immensely, with the experienced girls leading the way to victory. Our batters secured 270 runs in their 40 overs, with Abigail Simpson scoring a century, and Maddy Spence getting 44 runs before getting out.

Our bowlers each took wickets, with Dubbo all out for just 58 runs in 20.3 overs. The girls will now take on Mudgee High school in the next round.

Social & Emotional Transitions

During a recent trip to the zoo, I learnt that colloquially a group of giraffes is called a journey. My family and I watched these beautifully curious animals as they stopped to watch us sitting in our bus, before walking onward through their enclosure. We watched them awkwardly bend over to drink from the water hole and then just as oddly run ahead to catch up to their pack. I was prompted to think about how our life journey is a little the same at times. We stop to watch others, perhaps curi-ously wondering what their life might be like. At times, we’re a little awkward and a bit out of sync with each other; and at other times we feel like we’re just trying to keep up. Life is a journey of unexpected surprises, of feelings of confusion, sor-row, joy, frustration and peace; a journey which is shared with others. One such person sharing the journey is the Chaplain. The Chaplain’s role is to support the social, emotional and spiritual needs of a school community. It’s a multifaceted role with no two days ever being the same. It requires intentionality in being present with those around me, a willingness to listen without judgement, and a passion to always offer hope for change, for growth, for a different tomorrow. Since my arrival in November 2016, it has been my privilege to share life’s journey with individuals, families, year groups, and service providers who come with being part of our school community; from the depths of despair to the moments of great joy I am grateful. As I leave Parkes High in the coming weeks, may I say thank you for sharing your journey with me over the last 2 + years. It has been my honour to share yours and your young persons life moments on this journey to date.

Until we meet again, my sincerest regards,

Julie Layton

Happy Days On The School Farm

Year Seven Technology Mandatory Agriculture are getting stuck into growing their own vegetables and raising chickens, with the recent delivery by the Parkes Farm Centre of the new flock of Isa Browns. The students have designed the food rations for these chickens and are experimenting with two production systems. The primary system is a traditional chicken shed with attached run. The second system is a chicken tractor mobile system. Students monitor growth and development as well as egg production and egg quality. As shown in the photographs, the main problem we have so far is over management and unlimited affection. This is the first time that some students have ever handled a chicken and some birds were so comfortable being handled they went to sleep.

Some of the Year 7 Agriculture Class are pictured nurturing

the chickens at the

school Ag Plot.

Round On Win For PHS Lawn Bowls Team Testing conditions greeted the Parkes High Bowls Team when they arrived at Trangie Bowling Club on Friday 1 March for the first round of the CHS Lawn Bowls Championships. The trio of Ben Evans Jake Magill and Hudson Hawke were keen to live up to their potential after a harrowing and demanding preparation. It was clear 5 ends into a 15 end game that the team needed to focus on every single bowl. Unbeknownst to Parkes, Trangie had in their team the number 2 state singles player for 2018. The game see-sawed through to the middle ends, with Ben Evans open-ing bowls putting huge amounts of pressure on the opposition. Indeed, his surgical accuracy was one of the highlights of the day. Parkes High built a healthy lead thanks to some heroic last ditch bowling by the renowned skipper Hudson Hawke. Suddenly however, Trangie roared back into the game with a 5 shot 9th end to level proceedings. Once again Jake Magill contributed the odd decent bowl to help Parkes maintain a slender lead. Magill’s bowling was largely underwhelming. If Greg Chappell had thrown the ball to Magill instead of Trevor there wouldn’t have been the under arm controversy because the ball would not have stayed on the wicket! With the pressure mounting and tension at fever pitch with a vocal home crowd, Trangie strived to take the lead. Evans continued to be the ice man and Hawke swooped with deadly accuracy for the next few ends. With the game on the line it was here that Magill earned his keep, with some sublime placement of the lawn bowl. With one end to play and Parkes holding an 8 shot lead, the Parkes team were impervious to any late nervousness and held on for a 20-14 victory. Skipper Hawke praises his team, “I was proud of the boys and the way they hung in when times were tough. We stuck to the game plan and were lucky enough to come away with the win,” Benny was happy with the win also. “We bowled in good areas all day and were consistent through the 15 ends”. Although disappointed with his game Magill was also pleased with the result. “My shoulders are still sore from carrying the team, some of my bowls were just works of art. So pretty much we wouldn’t have got the victory if it wasn’t for me” coach Pinkstone said “. Although we are pleased with the win it is clear that a much harder train-er regime is needed.”

Round Two CHS Lawn Bowls Proved More Challenging

Parkes High journeyed to Orange for the CHS Lawn Bowls Championships on Wednesday 20 March. Ben Evans, Jake Magill and Hudson Hawke were desperately keen to continue their winning form, and confirm their status as leading lawn bowlers in the Western Region. Sadly, they were not. In their opening match against early favourites Gulgong High, Parkes had opened up an encouraging 2 nil lead after 2 ends. Such was the suprise amongst the competition the local tv news turned to Parkes for an interview. From this moment on however, the accuracy of the Parkes bowls plummeted, Gulgong went on to win that game with considerable ease.

Needing to win the next game to stay in the championships, Parkes were matched against their old nemesis Forbes High. The teams were neck and neck midway through the match with some notable examples of precision bowling under pressure from Evans and Magill. Of some small concern, many of Parkes bowls were modelled on Mitchell Starc: short and wide or too full. Skipper Hawke tried valiantly to impose himself on the game but he too succumbed to the pressure. At one point, Parkes was up by 1 shot, only for Forbes on their last bowl to take the end by 4 shots. Shoulders were seen to slump and heads bowed yet the boys rallied to stay within 3 shots with 1 end to play. It wasn’t to be however, with Forbes prevailing 9-6 in a spirited contest. Evans lamented, “I think I was more disgusted in my own performance rather than the teams” Jake Magill was more upbeat. “If it wasn’t for me we wouldn’t have had any points on the board. I was very unlucky to have missed out on western selection, from the way I performed. I thought I was a certainty.” Skipper Hawke was reflective after the game. “Walking in I was confident ready to cause big upsets, with a big performance from the boys. A couple of ends in and the news media were hounding me for an interview, I felt that all the eyes of the Central West were watching me. This got to me and I performed poorly to say the least. Unfortunately, I was unable to lead by example and I feel I have let the team down.” Coach Pinkstone was scathing in his assessment. “In sport there are winners and there are losers. It is nice to win but it is not everything. It would have been nice however for the team to demonstrate some skill, resilience, tactical awareness and determination. It is what it is but it’s lucky the lads are in Year 12, because they won’t be back next year. When it is all said and done however, if I were to journey anywhere with any people it would be with these three fine young men. They may not be champion bowlers but they are champion human beings.”

Principal’s Report Colour Run: Congratulations to the Year 11 Sport, Lifestyle and Recreation (SLR) class for a very successful Colour Run. The SLR class, under the guidance of Ms Nicole Mee, event planned the Colour Run as part of their studies. The students had to break up the tasks that needed to be completed, assign tasks to individuals and teams, complete the tasks and then communicate with the whole group as they progressed. This is a real life experience for the students in event management. The students thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and we envisage that the Colour Run will continue to be part of our Cross Country school carnival regime. Gifted and Talented Enrichment Day: A very big thank you to Ms Tracy Dawson, Ms Helen Vere and Mr Peter Luck for the organisation and implementation of our first enrichment day for Stage 3 and 4 Gifted and Talented students held last Friday. Students from our partner primary schools, Parkes East, Parkes Public and Middleton joined students from years 7 and 9 as they participated in activities that extended their thinking skills. The students thoroughly enjoyed themselves and one young student said told me they didn’t think they were learning as they were having heaps of fun, but when they thought about it they realised they had learnt a lot during the day. Vocational Awareness Night: The Year 10 Vocational Awareness Night was held this week. Mr Kieran Duncan, our Careers Advisor, worked through with students and their families the advantages of Work Experience and the opportunities for our students. A lot of information was provided by local employers, and our guest speakers spoke about the importance of planning and goal setting. Trivia Night: The SRC are organising a Trivia Night for Farmers on Thursday 11 April in the Hall. This will involve dressing up and lots of interesting questions! Becky Wright and Vivian Tosetti are senior SRC students and both study Agriculture. I am worried about how difficult some of the questions might be! It will be a great night and I encourage everyone to attend. Sportsmanship: Congratulations to our students who have participated and supported each other in our sporting teams. I have had many calls and comments made to me around the good sportsmanship and the manner in which our students are playing and representing themselves and the school. Uniform: Thank you to all our students who are wearing our school uniform with pride, and to students placing their hats, phones and earphones in their bags when they line up prior to entering their classes. Important Dates: Term 2 commences with a Staff Development Day on Monday and all students return on Tuesday 30 April. Our Years 7 to 11 Parent Teacher interviews are scheduled for Tuesday 7

May commencing at 4pm in

the hall. The Athletics Carnival is set for Wednesday 8 May. NAPALN testing will take place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 14, 15 and 16 May and the second of our Year 12 Parent/Teacher interviews will be held Tuesday 21 May. Our next P&C Meeting for 2019 will be held in the Conference Room (just along the corridor from the front office) on Tuesday 28 May at 7.30 pm. I look forward to seeing all our new and continuing parents. Please contact the school (6862 1844) or make an appointment if you need to discuss any aspect of your child’s education or if you need clarification on any issues or events your child may be involved in. Please be aware that all visitors to the school, including parents, must report to the office in Albert Street. At Parkes High School we are safe, respectful and responsible. Competitions for 2019

At Parkes High School we are strong supporters of academic success, and to that end we encourage our students to enter the National and International competitions that are available. Many of our new students will have substantial experience with these competitions from their primary school days.
