Batting first, Parkes High openers Maddison Spence and Marites Woods managed to put on a quick fire 53 runs before Tess was caught in the 8th over, Tess scored 23 runs (including 3 fours) from 27 balls. Next up was Abigail Simpson who joined Maddison out in the middle where they proceeded to put on a 110 run partnership. Abi scored 51 runs (including 6 fours) from 52 balls. Maddy was eventually bowled out in the 29th over; she scored 93 runs (which included 13 fours and 2 sixes) from 81 balls. After the lunch break the girls headed out in the heat to defend their total. Maddison Spence (2/20) and Marites Woods (0/34) again paired up to open the bowling for Parkes but faced very determined Blayney batters. Abi Simpson (1/24) and Gracie Jones (1/25) then joined the bowling attack with Gracie snaring the first wicket on her very first ball. Ellen Dolbel claimed two further wickets as the Blayney batters started to gain some ascendency. Blayney were not going to give up without a fight and made the Parkes girls work hard before Maddy Spence claimed two wickets in the second last over. Blayney required 21 runs from the last over which the Parkes team defended to the final ball. Some beautiful catches were taken by Abi Simpson, Tess Woods and Maddy Spence (2). Along with some fine boundary fielding especially from Jordan Moody who put her body on the line all day to stop the ball. Game results were: Parkes High 7/185 in 30 overs (Maddy Spence 93, Abigail Simpson 51, Marites Woods 23, Madison Marmion 3/36 off 6 overs, Taylor Hobby 2/19 off 6 overs, Montana Marmion 1/36 off 6 overs) defeated Blayney High 6/169 in 30 overs (Ella Tilburg 35, Sophie Tilburg 31, Abbie Uhr 29 n.o, Georgina Gray 22, Maddy Spence 2/20 off 6 overs, Ellen Dolbel 2/34 off 6 overs, Abigail Simpson 1/24 off 6 overs, Gracie Jones 1/25 off 3 overs) Parkes won by 16 runs. Mr Duncan would like to thank Shane Jones and Paul Moody for their assistance with coaching the girls, Shane for umpiring and the parents for their assistance with the transporting of girls to games and training sessions. McDonalds Parkes for providing two of their Orange Bowls for ice cold water and the Spence and Simpson families for the Zooper Doopersto keep all the girls cool and hydrated and also to Kerry Spence for scoring. The girls (pictured below) should be super proud of their efforts, they will now face the winner of the Riverina zone. Wishing the girls all the best of luck in their next game.

Bro Speak Program During Term 4 Parkes High School implemented the Bro Speak program, the program consisted of a group of 10 Aboriginal male students who were selected to listen and learn from Aboriginal men, teachers and each other. The Bro Speak program main goal was to get the students to take pride in what they do at school and in the wider community. Throughout the program the students learnt how to be strong in their Aboriginal identity, know about their culture and to get the students to believe in themselves and have the confidence to reach their goals. Through the program the students created their own high expectations for themselves and learnt how to be mentors and leaders to younger Aboriginal boys in their school and community. The Bro Speak Team would like to thank Mr Dennis Moran and all other community members who have donated their time to come speak to the boys.

Danielle’s Schools Spectacular In late November Danielle travelled to Sydney to perform in one of Australia’s biggest performances, Schools Spectacular. The theme of the 2019 Schools Spectacular was 'Stars', which consisted of 5,500 singers, dancers, musicians and performers. Before Danielle could take the stage she had to rehearse multiple times with hundreds of other students from the Sydney Metropolitan Areas. Danielle performed as part of the NSW State Dance Ensemble combined with students from Sydney. Danielle performed in 4 shows, twice a day, for 2 days in a row. "School Spectacular was an amazing experience and I am sure to be back next year". School Spectacular completes Danielle's journey with the 2019 New South Wales Dance Ensemble but she is excited to hopefully return next year. School Spectacular will air on Saturday 7 December at 7 pm on channel 7. Danielle is pictured outside of Qudos Bank Arena after the final Show.

TRYP Excursion A group of Parkes High students have returned from their TRYP (To Reach Your Potential) youth camp having experienced a week they will never forget. Under the guidance of Uncle Col Watego and his staff the group were subjected to challenges and hardships for 6 long hot days and nights, where night didn’t necessarily mean sleep and rest. It is the unique experiences of TRYP that have students say at the end of it all, despite its arduous nature, ‘It was awesome’. For the first few days the students were realising, at various speeds, that it was beneficial to everyone to meet Uncle Col ’s high expectations of discipline. Too slow here, a wrong word there, not helping a teammate, meant consequences ... of the push-up kind. Before long, a distinct change enveloped the group. They worked for each other. They raised their standards. They attempted things thought impossible only a week before: marches; constructing shelters to withstand storms; fieldcraft; night marches; operating radios correctly; and tactics. The last few days, however, were the real test. Leaving camp at midnight, with packs on, they marched in silence using only their night vision to the top of Mt Pinnacle. A few hours of sleep under the stars beside their mates punctuated a return march to base and a short rest before setting off for 7 Mile beach. There, under a darkening sky the TRYP warriors spent an hour testing their mind, body and spirit, all the while being battered by the Pacific Ocean. To say that an event is ‘life-changing’ has become a cliché, yet the TRYP camp may be just that for the participants. Unearthing talents, gaining self-discipline and building confidence are hallmarks of each TRYP camp but if one student arrived home from the 6 days of adversity with a true belief in themselves, then the camp was a success. Judging by their faces at the end of it all, it was.

Mental Health Awareness Day Parkes High students had the opportunity to participate in a range of activities on Friday November 29, to help bring awareness to ones mental health and the mental health of those around them. In conjunction with community mental health providers and a range of community groups the students had a great day! Carly Jayet from Forbes Shire Council gave the welcome and opening comments which set the day off to be open, honest and meaningful. Students visited workshops run by BATYR who delivered the “Look After Your Mates” program, Corey Thompson and Alex Prout from Country Rugby League, Dennis Moran from Nanybura, Joe Williams who spoke about the enemy within, local GP’s, Julie Layton, Helen Magill and the Parkes High School PDHPE staff. Parkes High would like to thank all the community guests and staff who provided the students with much needed

information and strategies in regards to mental awareness and especially thank the Parkes Junior Rugby League Club and Catholic Care for providing the barbeque, and Mrs Jaimee Timmins and Mrs Helen Corke for organising the day.

Principal’s Report Schools Spectacular: Congratulations to Year 8 student Danielle Goodrick who has danced at the 2019 NSW Public Schools Spectacular. This is an outstanding effort as Danielle was selected from hundreds of students who auditioned for the NSW Public Schools State Dance Ensemble. Danielle is one of 32 students in this ensemble and the youngest regional member of the group. A special thank you to Danielle’s parents who travelled with Danielle to Sydney for each rehearsal. Transition: Thank you to Ms Collett, our Year Adviser for Year 7 in 2020, who together with Mrs Renee Summerhayes, our Learning and Support Teacher and Mrs Melinda Richter our Deputy Principal for Year 7 in 2020, oversaw the excellent transition program that Year 6 students participated in last Monday. Mr Andrew Kingsford-Smith and Ms Michelle Reid worked on the transition program for our Special Education students. A huge thank you to all our staff who gave up their time to run lessons for the Year 6 students. SRC Christmas BINGO Night: Our very busy SRC students are organising the annual Bingo Night, scheduled for Friday the 6 December. The decorations have been purchased and will be in the Hall ready for Friday night! I am hoping that this year the students sell me some winning booklets! Presentation Night: Our School Captains, Faith Hanstock and Nicayden Greenwood will chair our Presentation Night next week. It is an excellent celebration of academic, sporting and citizenship at Parkes High School in 2019. Our special guests include our Federal Member of Parliament, Deputy Prime Minister, Michael McCormack, State Member of Parliament, Phillip Donato, Mayor of Parkes, Ken Keith and Director Educational Leadership, Charles Dwyer. I am sure they will be very impressed with our student achievement, the student performances and the organisation of the night. Thank you to all the staff who are working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the success of our Presentation Night. Recognition Assembly: Our new SRC students will be inducted at our Recognition Assembly next week. We will also present a large number of students with Gold Pins as they have moved through our Positive Awards system. Sporting red and White Medallions will be awarded as well as Age Champions. Our special guest, Councilor Bill Jayet, enjoys attending our Recognition Assemblies and is very impressed with the range of activities in which our student achieve awards. Surf Excursion: Mr Chris Summerhayes, Mrs Moran and Ms Meaghan Kempson are taking 28 Year 9 Physical Activity and Sport Studies students to Sydney for our annual Surf Awareness Excursion. In previous years the school has received very positive feedback for the engagement and exemplary behavior of our wonderful students. This is a very im-portant excursion as many of our students do not understand and have not experienced the power of water at our beaches. P&C: Our very active P&C is undergoing change for 2020. Our President, Stephen Gaut, is resigning as he is taking up a new position on the north coast in 2020. Tracey Glasson, our very organised Treasurer is also resigning after several years in this role. If you are interested in being a more active member of our P&C, please talk with our Secretary, Craig Bland, or come to our first meeting on Tuesday 25 February at 7.30 pm in our Conference Room. Hot Weather: As our weather is becoming hotter students are encouraged to wear a broad brimmed hat as it gives protection to the ears and back of the neck as well as the face. School broad brimmed bucket hats are available from the office for $15.00. 2020: School resumes on Wednesday 29 January for Years 7, 11 and 12. On Thursday 30 January, all students will attend school. Our Swimming Carnival is scheduled for Thursday 13

February 2020.

School Uniform: Thank you to all our parents who are continually supporting our school uniform policy and fostering pride in our school. Our student’s look and feel they are part of our school when they are in full uniform. Please remember when purchasing shoes that they must be black, fully enclosed leather shoes with no perforations and be ankle height. Most items of our school uniform are available from our school office. Please be mindful that our school uniform has been ratified by our P&C and as such it is a core rule and requirement of all government schools that students wear school uniform. If you have any difficulties with school uniform or other school issues, please call our Deputy Principals or I for a confidential discussion. P&C Meeting: Our first P&C Meeting for 2020 will be held in the Conference Room (just along the corridor from the front office) on Tuesday 25

February at 7.30 pm. I look forward to seeing all our new and continuing parents.

Please contact the school (6862 1844) or make an appointment if you need to discuss any aspect of your child’s education or if you need clarification on any issues or events your child may be involved in. Please be aware that all visitors to the school, including parents, must report to the office in Albert Street. At Parkes High School we are safe, respectful and responsible. Have a safe and relaxing holiday break. Mrs Sandra Carter Principal

P&C and Teachers DARE you to read.

The P&C Committee has donated $1000 to support Parkes High’s fledgling reading program, DARE, and the money has been used to purchase books for the Library that are specifically targeted at students in Years 7 - 9. These books include many HiLo readers – books of high interest value, for students with low reading ability. However, books were also purchased based on students responses to a recent survey which asked them what type of reading material (fiction, non-fiction, graphic novel, magazine, eBook, audio book) and genre (romance, adventure, horror and mystery, for example) that they like to read.

The reading program is in response to local, national and international studies and concerns about the decreasing rate of children who read for pleasure, and the subsequent effect on literacy. DARE aims to create a culture of reading for fun at Parkes High, and will involve compulsory quiet reading lessons for all English classes in Years 7 - 9.

DARE is a collaboration between the enthusiastic English teachers and the Teacher Librarian. Once a cycle, English teachers take their class to the Library to read. The Teacher Librarian gathers reading data to help students select books at the appropriate level, about topics that interest them individually.

We hope that despite living in a technology saturated world, students will come to see the value and pleasure in reading, which will lead to improvements in reading skills and more varied post-school options.

Images Of A Country Town

The following works were composed by three of our Year 10 English students as part of their recent class work:

Quiet, yet loud and somewhat mesmerising, where the shops were gradually overtaken by the chaos of town dwellers by midday. Where teenagers relied on the amusement of the town vessel, the main street, and where boredom was an issue for many. Night time became the excuse for gatherings where summer night drives became a sense of freedom. Where rain was longed for but never received. Parkes. By Ruby Dawson

The road glides past me with speed, as I watch on at the more graceful landscape in the distance, which is moving much slower. Grey, skeletal trees and flat ground covered in high, faded yellow grass bordered by long, tired fences fill the car window; it is gorgeous in an upsetting way. Even over the gentle hum of the car I can hear the silence. Everything is silent, except for the hiss of the sweltering sun in the air outside. Eventually, gutters and barren footpaths begin to line up along the road; all filled with grass growing in the cracks.

West of the Blue Mountains is where you’ll find Parkes. Late afternoons here produce the most heavenly golden light that settles upon the green trees, and makes the usual orange dirt glow a bright red. The sky is my favourite. The honey orange burns above the town tranquilly as the sun slowly sets. The remaining glint of light is always quite blinding; enough to ob-scure your vision for a few minutes. The peaceful landscape makes Parkes seem quiet; deceptively quiet, that is. Everyone knows everyone; everyone talks to everyone. The main street is filled with small businesses. Most buildings are old and a little sad looking due to weathering, but definitely charming in their own ways. In summer, the public pool is worn like any other piece of clothing and the love of sport is abundant.

I would say that Parkes is like any other country town; but there’s just something so special about it. It’s home. By Courtney Sinclair

It was a dry, tired town, where summer left its clawed marks all year round. Shadows grew and disappeared and by midday the merciless sun was inescapable. And despite the heat and fatigued eyes, the streets were filled with people, darting from air-conditioned stores to shop shadows, stepping to the music which celebrated approaching festivals. In winter, the traffic was no different, though people cowered in stores for different reasons. The wind was bitter and cruel, tugging at scarves and leading astray. And despite these things, friends still halted by the road to share news and smiles. It was a religious activity, where no matter the weather, conversations took place. By Rachel Ostler
