Notes from the Supervisor’s Offi ceNow that it’s June, we can hope that the frost warnings are behind us, and that our residents have their gardens and lawns set for the summer season. Our Parks Department has been working diligently to prepare our Town facilities for the high level of use they typically see during the warmer weather. There are still openings in a good number of Guilderland’s summer recreation programs, from the three 2-week half-day day camp sessions that begin on June 28 to a broad range of sports and activity camps that run from late June through August. You can register on-line for these camps at www.guilderlandrec.com, or call the Parks and Recreation Department offi ce at 456-3150 for more information. The Town Pool at Tawasentha Park opens for the season on Saturday, June 19. Open from noon until 7:00 P.M. on weekdays, and from 11:30 A.M. until 7:00 P.M. on weekends, the facility offers a pleasant, inexpensive opportunity to cool off in the hot weather. Senior citizens and children under 5 swim for free, and both season passes and daily admissions are available. The Guilderland Rock Adventure Barn (“GRAB”) will also be open from noon on Thursdays through Sundays beginning on June 24. With over 3,000 square feet of climbing surface available, GRAB offers an interesting and different kind of family

fun. Daily admission to GRAB, including use of the climbing gear, is $5.00The 31st season of Guilderland performing Arts Center Thursday evening concerts at Tawasentha Park will begin on June 24 at 7:30. This popular series always provides relaxing evenings of free entertainment to Guilderland residents, and this summer will be no exception. The 2010 GPAC performance schedule is available in this issue of Our Towne Guilderland (page 8), as well as on the Town website,

www.townofguilderland.org.Guilderland’s historic John L. Schoolcraft House will be the site of a lawn party from 11:00 A.M. until 3:00 P.M. on Saturday, June 19. The 19th Century Greek Revival house, located at 2299 Western Avenue, next to the Hamilton Union Church, is being carefully restored, and this event will allow guests to tour the site and to see the progress that has been made in restoring the home, as well as to learn more about its history and architecture.I would like to remind everyone again about our expanded plastic recycling program at the Town Transfer Station. We are now accepting plastic items #4 through #7. Some of the items that can now be accepted include plastic drinking cups, butter containers, prescription pill bottles, and yogurt containers. Please check the Transfer Station page on

the Town waybills for more details. Also, Guilderland, as one of the 14 communities that are members of the Capital Region Recycling Partnership, has launched a website devoted exclusively to recycling. You can fi nd a lot of timely and useful information on this site,

www.capitalregionrecycling.com.We are now coming into the end of the school year and summer vacations, and a lot of people will be on the move throughout our community. As you enjoy all that the season has to offer in Guilderland, please be mindful of others, especially children, as you walk, bike, or drive around Town.

Message from the Chamber...I can’t believe its June; the kids will be out of school very soon, camps are opening, and there is lots to do in the summer around Guilderland. Check out the Parks and Recreation booklet online or at the offi ce on Rt 146, and you will see info about camps, walking trails, the GPAC schedule, Pool Info, Altamont Concerts at Orsini Park, and golfi ng at Western Turnpike. Th ere is also the Guilderland Public Library’s Friday Night Movie series, where families can bring pillows, sleeping bags and stuff ed animals and see a Disney Movie.

At the chamber, we are planning Summer Restaurant Week for July 18-24th! Th is is our 3rd Annual, and

promises to be the best yet. We do have to increase the price a little; the cost of food is really killing our participating restaurants, but it is still a bargain! For $20.10 you get an appetizer, dinner and dessert at approximate 15 local participating restaurants. Check www.tasteofguilderland.com by the beginning of July for restaurants and the menus. You can also stop by the chamber offi ce, where we have the menus printed for you.

We have a First Friday Business Breakfast at 7:30 am on June 4, with DA David Soares and ADA Chris Baines talking about small business and white collar crimes, and crime prevention programs that the DA’s offi ce oversees. We have our 38th Annual Dinner and Award Ceremony at Albany Country Club at 5:30 on June 10, and have a local comedian hosting the event! Should be a blast!!

We will be slowing down a little for July (we will be busy dining out for Restaurant week:) but will pick back up again for august, so keep watch on our website for those events we have coming. For info on these events, visit www.guilderlandchamber.com.

Take care and have a lovely June!

When one thinks of unique tradi ons at Guilderland High School, the cultural fair is defi nitely one a major thing that comes to mind. With the en re school in a endance and hundreds par cipa ng, the event, run by interna onal club, is extremely important here at GHS. Also, since everyone par cipa ng in the fair, from dances to henna, must become a member, Interna onal Club is the largest club at our school. The fair is run by the esteemed leader of interna onal club, Mrs. Mackey, and was fi rst held in 1985. It had modest beginnings, taking place upstairs in four regular classrooms rather than the new gym where it currently resides. That

fi rst fair in 1985 was the brainchild of Mrs. Mackey and a group of ESL students who felt pre y isolated from the main¬stream GHS popula on. The fi rst year was, in Mrs. Mackey’s words “hit or miss,” and while the day didn’t go completely smoothly, the tradi on of the cultural fair had begun.

Ever since 1985, the fair has steadily grown to the monstrosity that

it is now through the hard work of students,

teachers, and parents. Even though Mrs. Mackey does a crazy amount of work for the fair, she is quick to acknowledge the hard work of others,

especially her colleagues, proclaiming that: “The fair is where I discover all of the talents of teachers” and “Even teachers who are not directly involved in the fair give up class me to allow their students to a end.” The cultural fair is truly a school wide event that most look forward to year a er year. According to Mrs. Mackey the fair “opens doors” and makes students step outside their comfort zone, helps form friendships, and is an all around enjoyable experience. During cultural fair me, we see a diff erent side to many people, for example, the cultural fair is the only place you’ll fi nd a football player willingly wear a skirt, for the Haka dance. Mrs. Mackey says she o en looks at kids par cipa ng in the fair compared to how they are in the classroom and thinks “Is this the same person?” Something about the fair opens our minds and brings us together as we learn about world cultural through designated country booths, dances, foods, and ethnic items.

Despite the overwhelming eff ect that the fair has on the

school, and the posi ve recep on that it always receives, it is now on the chopping block due to budget cuts. If interna onal club is cut, the fair cannot con nue, which

would be a major loss. When asked what she thinks GHS students and faculty would be missing if the fair did not go on, Mrs. Mackey responded, “From where I’m standing, a lot. Because of the fair kids who wouldn’t normally interact join groups and make friends. Students some mes amaze me with what they do. The fair is truly a community event and to not have it would be a very sad thing.” Indeed, it would be, because the enthusiasm towards the fair is proven. Mrs. Mackey says that she has been told in the past that the day of the cultural fair is one

of the highest a endance days of the year. No one wants to miss out on the experience.

Mrs. Mackey also said that the fair has inspired many of her former students to start similar events at their colleges, or even to pursue careers in some area of interna onal aff airs. It’s hard to believe that one day, one event, has such far reaching eff ects, but that is what is so great about it. It’s true that the cultural fair is a day that brings us all together, but it’s also a lot of fun. The Guilderland community would be missing out on a lot if it is unable to con nue.

We’re coming upon the summer months and the end of school. This o en can mean a change in rou ne and the adop on of other ac vi es and programs in your child’s daily schedule. While summer is a wonderful me of year to relax and try new things, it’s important for your child to maintain a balance of structured and unstructured me. It’s advisable to keep some consistency in your child’s ac vity schedule so that the t r a n s i t i o n back at the end of the summer is not jarring or diffi cult.

I have been asked about whether a child should or shouldn’t “take a break” from their lessons or classes during the summer. Obviously, there’s no one answer since no child is the same. However, in my experience, maintaining at least 1-2 classes per week during the summer helps a child to feel a sense of accomplishment and stability. At the same me,

they’re able to strengthen their character and keep their commitment to learning alive. This helps them to be classroom-ready when school resumes.

Children get very uneasy if they feel that they’re missing something or that someone is advancing ahead when they are “on a break.” This can nega vely impact children’s confi dence levels and make them feel reluctant to rejoin once the break is over.

Of course, if a week long vaca on is planned, a prepared parent can side step any nega ve ramifi ca ons by having their children take an extra class before leaving or an extra class when they return. Front loading classes (without overwhelming) can ease the feeling that they are “falling behind” or someone else is “ge ng

ahead.” In addi on, ge ng a tutor, such as a more advanced student or a willing instructor, can help a child to stay on the path to success when a vaca on is planned.

Some mes children become intrigued by what their other friends are doing, playing, or saying while your children are par cipa ng in their class. This can be diffi cult for children because again, they don’t want to miss anything. It’s important to prepare your children for these feelings by talking openly about priori es, eff ort, commitment, and me. Helping your children make good well-thought-out

choices that strengthen character will be much be er in the long run than if they make poor decisions based on short-lived tempta ons and whims. Remind your children that they only have the opportunity to enjoy their class a few mes per week for just a few hours (or less). They have

the opportunity to spend me with friends during the many other hours available in the week.

Senior Brian Cucinelli to be Division I Fencer David Marinstein

In your average high school, there are always groups of athletes. The football, basketball, baseball and soccer teams all have their moments throughout the year. It’s not very o en, however, that an athlete from your high school goes on to compete at a top Division 1 program. Next year, GHS senior Brian Cucinelli will be doing just that. Brian began fencing in September of 2001. “My dad had been fencing for a li le while on weeknights. He used to have to stay home and watch me some nights instead of going fencing…I began going with him so he wouldn’t have to baby sit me. I have kept with it since, although a lot has changed about how I treat the sport now.” Almost 9 years later, Brian is s ll working on his fencing, a sport unfamiliar to most. Fencing comprises of many vigorous workouts and it is not an easy sport to excel at. Brian explained the training for the sport: “Training consists of several aspects: strength training, condi oning, footwork, blade work and bou ng [spar¬ring].” Brian takes each individual aspect into his own hands and works extremely hard to succeed. “I do strength and condi oning on my own…the other three I do at my local fencing club…fencing involves a lot of one on one work, so I mainly take private lessons with my coach.” Each of these aspects takes an incredible amount of dedica on and they are very me consuming. Brian explained that currently, he trains 12 hours a week. But, when he was between the ages of 14 and 16, he used to train for approximately 20 hours a week. The most intense consump on of me he has trained for was 25 hours a week back during the summer of 2008. Throughout his fencing career, Brian has competed in numerous USFA events (such as the Junior Olympics,

North American Cups, Summer Na onals and even the Olympic Trials) and has traveled all around the world for some compe ons. “Domes cally, I’ve been to around 35 states over the course of 8 years. Interna onally, I have been to Poland, Germany, the Netherlands and Hungary.” When asked of his greatest fencing accomplishment Brian told of making his fi rst world cup in Poland as a member of the US Na onal Cadet Team (under age 17). He says “It was very re¬warding as only the top fencers qualify based on na onal rankings.” According to the United States Fencing Associa on as

of early January 2010, Brian was 19th in the na on in Junior Men’s Saber

(under age 20). He has since stopped compe ng na onally to prepare for NCAA. Brian’s college career will be an impressive addi on to his fencing resume. Next year Brian will be a member of the fencing team at Duke University where he aims to earn All-American honors as a Blue Devil.

June Reading fromYour Library: Guilderland's Gathering Place

by Barbara Nichols Randall, Director, Guilderland Public Library

It may be only June but already I’m thinking “summer”. Below are some books that might help put you in the summer mood, or at least start thinking about where to spend a few days enjoying life.

Love mysteries? The Boardwalk? Or Bruce Springsteen? Chris Grabenstein’s series starring police offi cers John Ceepak (an Iraq war vet) and Danny Boyle (his good old boy sidekick) solving mysteries and murder in mythic Sea Haven, New Jersey may be just your style. Awarded the Anthony for his fi rst book in the series Tilt a whirl, you can almost smell the sausage & peppers and feel the heat in Grabenstein’s stories. Also in the series are

Mad Mouse, Whack a Mole, Hell Hole , Mind Scrambler and Rolling Thunder.

Planning to explore the Adirondacks? Guilderland Public Library has many non-fi c on books that will help you do

just that. 50 Hikes in the Adirondacks by Barbara McMar n describes both short walks and day trips (remember always bring water, warm clothing and sturdy hiking shoes) as well as longer backpacking trips through the park. Also available are her Discover the … Adirondacks series and Russell Dunn’s Adirondack Waterfall Guide.

Want some summer family fun? The Penderwicks and The Penderwicks on Gardam Street by Jeanne Birdsall is available in paper to read aloud or on CD to hear read aloud by Susan Denaker. President Obama, First Lady Michelle and Malia and Sasha are some of their biggest fans!

If the Catskill’s are your idyllic vaca on spot Warren Adler’s Funny Boys will give you some laughs, some “fuggedaboudit” mobster ac on and a li le romance mixed in. Adler is known for his black comedy The War of the Roses, Random Hearts and the Washington, D.C. series detec ve Fiona Fitzgerald.

And no one can say they are truly from the Capital District un l they have vaca oned on Cape Cod. Among the many fi ne books, CDs and DVDs at the GPL is Richard Russo’s That Old Cape Magic which is also available in CD and large print. Author of Empire Falls and Nobody’s Fool Russo is almost a “local” author.

What iconic book is recommended to Baby as a “must read” in Dirty Dancing (1987 movie about summer love in the Catskills)? Email [email protected] to enter the drawing for a gi cer fi cate to Juicy Burgers ‘n More.

Happy Reading! Barbara

There is something for every age in this wonderful feature, from kids’ delight at all the things Mary pulls out of her magic bag of tricks to adults’ enchantment with the “Step in Time” comedic dance. (We must confess, this dance sequence is one of our all-time favorites.) Doors open at 6:30, show starts at 7 pm. Popcorn? Of course.
