notes from the SUPERVISORS OFFICE5209 Western Ave, Guilderland (518) 356-1980 www.townofguilderland.org

As we enter the holiday season, with all of its hustle and bustle, I want to take a few moments to request that all Guilderland residents be especially conscious of their neighbors as they travel around Town at this busy time of year. Please be careful as you drive or walk. It is a good thing if all of us can make safety a primary concern at this special time of the year. With the winter season just about to arrive, our residents should remember the seasonal recreational opportunities that abound in Guilderlands parks. While the ground is free of snow, the extensive trails in Tawasentha Park, the Winter Recreation Area, and the Community Gardens are available for hiking. When (or perhaps if ) snow arrives, the same trails are available for snowshoeing and cross country skiing on ungroomed trails, while sledding is enjoyed by many at the Winter Recreation Area. Groomed trails for cross-country skiing are available when weather permits at Western Turnpike Golf Course. Limited amounts of rental equipment are available. Please contact the Parks and Recreation Offi ce at 456-3150 for information on what specifi c activities and equipment are available on any given day.Guilderlands Western Turnpike Golf Course will be off ering a nice gift opportunity this Christmas season. 2013 season memberships will be available at a special discounted rate for those who pay their membership fees by December 31, 2012. Th is early-bird special represents an extra discount over and above the normal

The Guilderland Chamber has fi nally settled into our new home in the Star Plaza, and we encourage everyone to stop by to check it out. We are now on the second fl oor-west end of the plaza, by Guilderland Wine and Liquor. A special thank you to all of the members (especially Tech Valley Communications, Liberteks and LetoCom!) and volunteers for making the move possible.

A few events around our area that will get you into the holiday spirit are happening this month. Th e Chamber and the Guilderland Public Library are coordinating a bus trip to NYC on December 8th. Th is is a great time to visit the Rockefeller Center, the world famous tree, and is a perfect time for some shopping! Also, the village of Altamont is hosting the 2012 Victorian Holidays during the weekend of 12/8 and 12/9. Th e festival of trees and wreaths, childrens activities, and Santas arrival on the train are just a few of the must see events during the Victorian Holiday tour in Altamont. Please visit our chamber website for all other upcoming events!

I want to remind everyone to SHOP LOCAL during the upcoming holidays and visit all of our awesome local businesses to purchase gifts for your loved ones. Have you seen the new psychic on Western Ave? Th at would be an interesting gift.or ANYTHING from Robinsons Hardware, or a massage from Pure Elements, or a Pandora charm from Singers instead of waiting in line at the malls Pandora Stores? Just some ideas!!!

Enjoy the holidays, be thankful for your families, your health and prosperity, and stay warm.

Let Your Lawyer Do Their Job

While reading an online news publica on, I spo ed an ar cle detailing one womens perspec ve about the lessons she learned during her divorce. She o ered readers a list of fi ve things to know before you start the divorce process. Number 5 on her list was let your lawyer do [her] job.

The author described several methods for allowing your lawyer to do her job. I did not agree with everything she said in number 5, but she did men on three important points that I want to expand on.

    1. Trust your lawyer: The author points out that you probably chose your lawyer very carefully. If that is the case, then you need to take a step back and let your lawyer do the job you hired her to do.

This is very important. Many clients are so wrapped up in their family situa on that they try to take control of the wheel. While every client should certainly play a part in naviga ng the course of li ga on, that does not mean the client should grab the wheel and drive the car. If you knew the law and how to manage a case, then you wouldnt need a lawyer. If you let your lawyer do the lawyering, you will o en fi nd that your case progresses much smoother.

    2. Let your lawyer remove the emo on from your case: Your lawyers job is to give you advice, guide you through the divorce process, and help you achieve your ul mate goals. In order to do this successfully, your lawyer must not allow emo ons to cloud her judgment.

Many of my clients come to me with heartbreaking stories to tell. While I absolutely sympathize with these clients, I cannot allow

my personal opinion or emo ons to control how I represent a client. Staying objec ve about the facts allows me to determine how the facts can be used to best help my client. It also allows me to see how the facts can be used by my adversary to the detriment of my client. This is a skill that is incredibly important for determining how the li ga on should proceed.

    3. Do not underes mate the importance of property division: Your lawyer will be just as concerned with how the marital property (and debt) is divided as she is with how the custody of children will be determined.

A client will some mes come to me and say that the only thing s/he cares about is the children and that s/he is willing to walk away from anything else. In certain circumstances, walking away from everything in exchange for custody of children may make the most sense or be the best op on for the client. But this is only true in very limited circumstances. In the vast majority of cases, making sure my client receives a fair distribu on of property and support directly impacts the custody of children. If my client has custody, but insu cient property or support then how will the children be supported?

A divorce or custody dispute can be an incredibly draining process with legal requirements and outcomes that are totally foreign to an individual with no legal training. Following steps 1 through 3, and allowing your lawyer to do her job will be very helpful to you (and your lawyer)!

SPOTLIGHTInterview with Elaine Santore - DirectorUmbrella of the Capital DistrictQ. How long have you been in business?A. Since 1995

    Q. Where are you located?A. 9 N. Broadway Schenectady NY 12305

    Q. What hours are you open?A. 9-5pm Monday Friday 24 hours for home emergencies

    Q. How and why did you getinto the business?A. Founded in 1995, Umbrella began with two partners whohad personally experiencedthe difficulty of finding properassistance to maintain thehomes of their family members. Their experiences led them to design a program based on the "Aging at Home" philosophy that households,on a fixed income, could receive affordable home repairs from a reliablesource. In its seventeen year history, Umbrella has grown from onemember household and one handyperson, to presently serve over 500households by connecting them with a network of 150 handy people. The way we accomplish this is by recruiting and screening retired men and women from the local community who wish to remain active andcontinue using their skills.

    Q. Are you known for anything special?A. Our workforce is very special. Since the beginning of Umbrella, our intent was to have an older workforce and this approach earned Umbrella a national award from MetLife/Civic Ventures.

    Q. What do you love most about the business?A. Its quite satisfying to know that your idea can help so many. For the past seventeen years elderly residents of nearly three thousandhouseholds throughout the Capital District have relied upon Umbrella for home maintenance and a variety of other services that have helpedthem to remain in their home and community.

    Q. What do you want the community to know about you?A. Umbrella of the Capital District, Inc. is a not for profit organizationdesigned to enable senior citizens and people with disabilities ofall economic status to access the services they need to continue tolive affordably, comfortably and independently in their homes for aslong as they desire or is practical. Our goals are to create a safe livingenvironment, maintain the value of the home, and provide a thoroughlyscreened workforce of people who live in the community. We are always looking for community and business partnerships, andskilled older people looking to help a peer stay in their home.Umbrella will be having a Holiday Stocking Gift Fund. It seems every season has reasons that bring people walking into chiropractic offi ces with back pain. In the spring and summer, it is usually gardening and landscaping projects and in the fall, it is all the raking and bagging leaves. It never fails that after Thanksgiving, we always have patients who injury their backs and necks putting up lights, decorations and shoveling snow. So here are some tips to prevent injuries this holiday season and basic back care should you become injured.

Take your time and take breaks. Putting up holiday decorations and shoveling snow can take some time. Most people are not used to bending, reaching, twisting and lifting for a few hours straight. Your back muscle will fatigue quickly and when they do, it puts more stress on the joints, ligaments and discs. The result could be an acute back/neck strain or disc injury. So take your time and take breaks to admire your work.

Keep your stomach muscles tight. Most of you have heard the term core strength so you know what I am talking about. But if you have never heard this term, your deep stomach muscles are referred to as your core or center of strength. By keeping these muscle engaged or contracted during times of physical strain, is gives tremendous support to your spine.

Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation (RICE). If you do injure your back, follow the RICE principle. This is most often used to treat sports injuries, but the same applies to your back. Rest by sitting in a supported chair or lay down on your back on the fl oor with your knees bent. Get up and move frequently. One of the worst things you can do is lay in bed all day. Apply ice for 15 minutes

WINTER BACK CAREBy Dr. Kim Keeling

Dr. Kim Keeling resides in Guilderland with husband, Mark, and two

children,Tristan and Taylor. She graduated from Northwestern Health

Sciences University in Bloomington, MN. She has been a Certifi ed

Chiropractic Sports Physician for eight years.

every 2 hours. NEVER apply heat on an acute injury. Most patient who injure their backs come into the offi ce and say I slept on a heating pad all night and the pain was worse the next day. Heat will make the swelling worse and cause more pain. Compress the area with a low back brace or use kinesiotape to help reduce swelling.

Follow-up with your chiropractor. If pain persists it is always best to follow up with your chiropractor. If you do not have a chiropractor, then this is actually the worst time to fi nd one. Patients often feel very vulnerable when they are in pain. Imagine going to a chiropractor that you do not know and have to be able to trust them to perform a procedure that you do not understand. Unfortunately, this is how most patients end up visiting a chiropractor. Patients usually go to urgent care or their primary care doctor fi rst. They are typically given pain medication and muscle relaxers. These do not actually fi x the injury but only mask the problem. They are desperate for relief and come in and say I dont care how you do it just take the pain away. I encourage everyone to fi nd a chiropractor when you are not in severe pain so you understand the techniques he/she uses and feel comfortable with them.

As always, you can call the Sports & Spinal Wellness Center for a free consultation at 518-869-3415. Please visit our website for more information at www.sportsandspinalwellness.com. We would be happy to be a part of your healthcare team. Have a safe and happy Holiday Season!

    2228 Western Ave, Guilderland (518) 456-2400 www.guilpl.org

December Reads from the Guilderland Public Library

Everyone thinks about Toys in December!

The Guilderland Public Library has books, music and videos for every age and every interest. There are books about making toys, books starring toys, books that inspired toys and books that help us remember our child-hood toys.

Two of the many childrens books that inspired toys are The velveteen rabbit, or how toys became real by Margery Williams and Dr. Seuss The Cat in the Hat.

Two books that were written about toys are the Winnie-the-Pooh books by A.A. Milne and the Raggedy Ann and Andy books by Johnny Gruelle.

Two books that are a fascina ng and unusual look at toys are Plastic cul-ture : how Japanese toys conquered the world by Woodrow Phoenix and Moby-Duck by Donovan Hohn. Plastic culture is a lavishly illustrated journey from the postwar development of the Japanese toy market right up to the present, stopping along the way to inter-view toymaking giants, cult Hong Kong toy designers, and many other leading players in the world of designer toys. Moby-Duck, which is available as an ebook, has the subtitle The True Story of 28,800 Bath Toys Lost at Sea and of the Beachcombers, Oceanographers, Environmentalists, and Fools, Including the Author, Who Went in Search of Them.

The way toys work : the science behind the magic 8 ball, etch a sketch, boomerang, and more by Ed Sobey and Woody Sobey. The authors examine 50 toys, including their history and scientifi c principles. In many cases, they discuss and reproduce original patent drawings. They also take

the toys apart to reveal the technology that makes them tick and offer suggestions on how one might build some of these items from scratch

Four of the cra books that are as interes ng to read as to use in crea ng toys are Steve To-masheks Tiny whittling : more than 20 projects to make, Sock it to me : 16 projects sewn from socks - creepy, crazy & strangely appealing by Brenna Maloney, Happy cute : 25 amigu-rumi gifts to celebrate special occasions by Annie Obaachan, and Crafts from your favorite children's stories by

Kathy Ross. What is amigurumi? Amigurumi () is the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting small stuffed animals and anthropomorphic creatures. Childrens stories crafts in-clude making a Babar the Elephant Treasure Keeper, a Little Red Hen Recipe Holder, a Racing Tortoise and Hare, a Raggedy Ann Pin, and a Hide Peter in the Watering Can Puppet.

Nostalgia fans or toy collectors can read books about toys like I had that doll! by the Editors of Doll reader or 100 Greatest baby boomer toys by Mark Rich.

I hope you have an enjoyable December and get all the toys and books that you desire. Me,I can hardly wait to see how my home built version of Operation works!

The Guilderland real estate market is showing signs of strength even as the onset of winter approaches. The recent increase in activity appears driven primarily by record low mortgage interest rates currently hovering around the 3.25% range for a 30 year fi xed rate mortgage.

Homes have never been more affordable and buyers are taking advantage low or no down payment fi nancing options. Inventory is low and multiple offers are starting to be seen again for homes priced correctly. Marketing times are starting to decrease and we are selling homes in days instead of the months it once took. Our proprietary marketing systems have produced more Guilderland buyers then we have homes to sell. Here are three examples of sales in Guilderland we have represented sellers on.

GUILDERLAND REAL ESTATE EXPERT WANTS TO PAY YOU $500551 Highwood Circle- Sold in one day over list price!
