notes from the SUPERVISOR’S OFFICE

As spring rolls into high gear, many of our residents will be working diligently on their lawns, gardens, fl ower beds, and

bushes and shrubs. Th e Guilderland Highway Department supports the work of our residents by sending trucks through the Town’s neighborhoods during this season to pick up leaves, yard waste, and branches. We ask that you help our crews to perform this work as effi ciently as possible. Please make sure that all leaves and yard waste are bagged for collection. Branches should be no longer than four feet in length, bundled, and tied with twine. Bundles should not be any larger than what one worker can readily lift and place on one of our Highway Department work trucks. Your cooperation will help to make spring yard cleanups easier for everyone.

Guilderland’s Western Turnpike Golf Course opened for the season on March 17. Some of our employees have worked at the course for over 30 years, and 2012 has been the earliest opening day that any of them can remember. Th e mild winter has limited seasonal damage to the course as well, leaving it in excellent early-season condition. Annual memberships, which off er an excellent value for regular players, are available, and are signifi cantly discounted for Guilderland residents. Consider purchasing a membership if you play often, or just enjoy a pleasant round in the cool spring weather. Please call the Pro Shop at 456-0786 for more information or to reserve a tee time for your group.

As you clean out your basements, garages, and sheds, please remember that Guilderland’s Spring Hazardous Waste Collection Day will be on Saturday, May 12, from 8:00 A.M. until 2:00 P.M. at the Town Highway Department Garage on French’s Mill Road. You will need a ticket in order to participate. Th ese are available at no charge, upon presentation of your vehicle registration showing Guilderland residency, at either the Transfer Station or the Town Clerk’s Offi ce during regular business hours. Information about what you can and cannot bring to the event is available on the

Transfer Station page of the Town website, www.townofguilderland.org.

Brochures for Guilderland’s always-popular summer recreation programs are out in the mail. Th ese programs, which include both our half-day day camp program and full-day sports and enrichment programs, opened for enrollment on April 1. You may register for any of our programs in person at the Guilderland Parks and Recreation offi ce on Route 146 across from Tawasentha Park or on-line at www.guilderlandrec.com. A full listing of all the programs off ered is available at the website. Many of these off erings are highly popular and fi ll up quickly, so I suggest that you plan on registering early in order to avoid being shut out. If you have any questions, please contact the Parks Department at 456-3150.

As we move forward into the spring season, all of our Town parks and recreational facilities turn into a beehive of activity, with soccer at the DiCaprio and Nott Road Parks, baseball and softball at Tawasentha and Keenholts Parks, golf at Western Turnpike, and walking, hiking, running, and other activities at all of the park facilities that Guilderland is fortunate to have. I urge you to get outdoors and to utilize these facilities this spring. It is a wonderful time of the year for you to enjoy them.

April….can you believe it? I hope everyone is feeling rejuvenated

with spring right around the corner. Guilderland really comes alive in spring and summer. I love it. Please get out and use the parks, local businesses and farms we are so lucky to have!

At the chamber, we are focusing on our upcoming 40th annual dinner!! We give out town beautification awards and chamber business awards, and we are seeking nominations. Call us this month and tell us about your favorite renovation of the past year, or a place worth a detour!

We also have 50 Adirondack Chairs in different stages of being assembled and decorated for our 40th anniversary community event, “3 chairs for Guilderland!” Check out the website, www.3chairsforguilderland.com for more information on events and businesses with chairs displayed that will start in June. If you want a chair, hurry!! We are closing chair sales at 100 so the project doesn’t get too big.

A few fantastic business events we have coming up are:

Tuesday April 17 from 5-7 pm we have a Networking Mixer at the beautiful Albany Country Club on Wormer Rd. It costs $10 to get in, ($20 for non-chamber members) and for that price you get to meet business connections and sample great food provided by the Club!

Thursday April 19 from 8-9 am-Coffee with the Women in Business at Panera Bread at Crossgates Commons. Free!

Friday May 4 from 7:30-9 am First Friday Business Breakfast-at the chamber offices on 2050 Western Ave, join us for Beyond Hello…what to say after you say hello, with Mark Grimm of Grimm Communications and Lisa Giruzzi of Transformational Conversations. $5 admission.

To register for these events or ask questions about anything you read, call 456-6611; Erika and I would be happy to talk to you.

What is an intraoral camera??

While X-rays provide valuable information that we cannot get from any other source, they cannot show you everything that is going on in your mouth. That is why we have invested in an intraoral camera – a highly advanced piece of diagnostic equipment that allows you to see what we see inside your mouth. The intraoral camera hand piece is approximately the size and shape of a dental mirror. It has a built-in light source, and serves as a tiny video camera that allows us to zoom in on one tooth with 25x magnification, or give you a “video tour” if your entire mouth. The images are displayed on a computer monitor, so you will be able to see problems such as worn or broken fillings, cracked teeth, plaque deposits, cavities next to fillings and excessive wear. We can also print an image for you to take home with you! The intraoral camera allows you to take an active role in your dental treatment by enabling you to see what we see inside your mouth. With a clear understanding of your dental conditions, you will be able to make treatment decisions with confidence!Call us at 356-5635 or stop by to check out our new

technology!

If you have any questions, please call my office at 518-356-5635 and ask for Dr. O!

TABAK & KIOSSE, LLP100 Great Oaks Boulevard, Suite 122, Albany NY 12203

(518) 464-4095 • www.tklawllp.comWhat year did Tabak & Kiosse LLP begin?Attorney Margaret C. Tabak founded the practice in 1993, after working for law fi rms in Schenectady for 8 years. Attorney Leyla Kiosse joined the practice in 2006, and a partnership was formed in 2011.

When did you start practicing law?Margaret Tabak was admitted to the bar in 1988. Leyla Kiosse was admitted to the bar in 2005. Th ey are both graduates of Albany Law School.

Where is your practice located? We are located less than a half mile away from Crossgates Mall and Stuyvesant Plaza in Great Oaks Offi ce Park. We can be found on the web at www.tklawllp.com. Our phone number is (518)464-4095, and email address is [email protected].

What area of law is the focus of your practice? We concentrate our practice in the areas of family and matrimonial law. Th e types of cases we work on include separation agreements, divorce, custody, child support, property division, alimony/maintenance, grandparent visitation, and pre and post-nuptial agreements.

Why did you choose to concentrate in family and matrimonial law?Th is area of the law allows you to help individuals and at the same time is intellectually challenging as the law and society are constantly changing. We know that we are working with sensitive issues and often diffi cult situations for individuals and families. We are committed to providing high quality, compassionate, and dedicated legal representation to our clients. We strive to empower our clients by guiding them through the laws which aff ect their case, and providing them with all their options so they can make the best decisions for themselves and their families.

What are you known for?We are known for our exceptional client satisfaction. We receive the majority of our business from referrals—satisfi ed clients recommending us to their friends and family, as well as other attorneys in the community who are familiar with our commitment to hard work and knowledge of the law. We consider the respect from our peers and the appreciation of our clients to be the highest praise for what we do.

What do you love most about your law practice?Working with a wide range of clients. Our clients cover the gamut in terms of their employment, economics, age, gender, race, religion, and sexual orientation. Th ere are no two situations that are the same, and every day you learn something new and are constantly challenged. In getting to know our clients we learn about their lives and experiences, which lets us personally address their needs.

What is the greatest challenge?Being a professional and running a business are often diff erent things. While our fi rst and foremost responsibility is to our clients, running a business means having expenses of our own. HOW TW OTT GET YOURYY HR OME SOLDIN JUST 23 DAYSAA !

John and Mary had never felt more frustrated in their life.

Here it was, almost 3 months since they listed the house, and

no buyer. If they didn’t sell soon, John would lose the job offer

he wanted so badly.

They assumed that hiring a real estate agent would be the

right thing to do, to sell the house quickly. They figured that

a professional would be able to get the highest price, in the

shortest period of time. Listen to what happened.

The first agent they hired told them their house was so beautiful,

it would sell immediately. (No such luck.) Weeks went by and

produced nothing but empty promises.

Then their agent told them they needed to spend $3,500 to

“fix-up” the house in order to get it sold. After they spent the

money, there were still no firm offers, even though everyone

told them that “the house looked nice”.

A few days later, Mary happened to be reading a magazine that

offered a FREE REPORT called “How to Sell Your Home

Quickly, At Your Price”, and she sent away for the report.

She discovered a unique marketing strategy that wasn't being

used by their first agent. After their listing agreement expired,

John and Mary began applying the simple tips outlined in the

report and... 23 days later their house sold!

What Mary and John learned wasn’t any kind of magic. What

they learned is there are specific techniques that can be used to

sell a home quickly, for the highest price. But for some reason,

some real estate professionals are unaware of them, or don’t

make use of them. To get a free copy of this report, just call

the free recorded message line below, and a copy of the report

will be sent to you. In fact, we are so certain our systems will be

successful we will guarantee it. Ask about the exclusive Clancy

Education Th ese Days

My wife is an avid user of Facebook and the Internet. She has learned a tremendous amount about the topics she

is interested in from others in a social online environment. For some time I ignored her antics and the prospect of joining Facebook myself. I know many people that share this view. I realized a few months ago that this was the incorrect attitude. Since then I have created my own business and personal Facebook accounts and friended my own children fi rst and foremost. I highly recommend that you do this as well. If my children are growing up in this age that is so vastly diff erent from that in which I grew up, I must be a part of it to experience it. Not as much to keep an eye on them, but to live it and understand it so that I may properly participate in their continued development and education. Th e time for resisting is past and the time for embracing is here.

Will Richardson is an active proponent of social online learning networks, feels that education as we know it is changing and that we must begin to make adjustments so that we may better deliver education to our children. As I listened to Will at a Guilderland Schools professional development seminar, I was pleased that I had already taken steps to become involved in this age of social online learning. My journey has just begun, but at least I had taken the fi rst steps.

Th e way we all learn is changing signifi cantly. Even at Taekwondo, when I question my own knowledge regarding things I was taught, I refer to the Internet and the resources available to confi rm or refute my knowledge. When I needed to fi x my washing machine, which I reported to you in my Perseverance article, I used the blogs and manuals I found on

line. Th e fact that other people had experienced the same issues and had shared their knowledge made my experience so much better and I became better educated. Th ese are tiny examples of the power of these educational networks now available. Our children can literally become experts in just about anything they want by connecting to experts around the world.

If they are doing it, we must do it too. If for no other reason we must participate so that we can help our children do it properly.

Th ere is a tremendous amount of garbage out there on the web; as parents and teachers we need to be familiar with it all so that we can help our children understand how to cope with it all safely.

I am not claiming to be an expert on online learning, nor am I saying that the Internet is a totally safe place to go poking around. I have not acquired my Taekwondo self defense skills, however, by hiding and being afraid. I did it by training and practice (some of which, incidentally, was obtained in online learning networks). Proper practice and exposure removes fear and delivers knowledge. It is this knowledge and awareness I desire to possess about what is going on online so that I can further the education of my students and my own children. My next adventure will be Twitter. It is yet another thing I have a responsibility to experience.

[email protected]

I started Updo to You in 2005 as a convenience to local and out of town brides and bridal parties.

I am located at Avanti Hair Studio in Guilderland. Updo to You is a business that is done primarily at the Bride’s location.

I go to locations as early as 5 a.m. if needed. The timing depends on how big the bridal party and what time thephotographer is arriving. I like to be finished with all the girls one hour before the photographer arrives. This keeps everyone on time. I give each girl one hour of my time.

What I love most about my business is that it gives me the opportunity to make other women happy. They arecomfortable, relaxed and beautiful. And I love to see a smile on their faces before the big day. I also love my business because it is a fun morning for me. I have a great time with all the girls.

I will travel anywhere to take care of a wedding party or special event. I do charge a travel expense if they are onehour or more away from Albany. I have done weddings in Las Vegas, Long Island, Cape Cod, New York City, and San Francisco.

Selling Your Home in 2012?Getting to the real estate closing table today is much more challenging than a few years ago. During 2011, only 47% of Guilderland single family homes

listed actually sold and closed.

Today it takes unparalelled market knowledge, a skilled negotiator, and an experienced problem solver to get you to the closing table.

With over 2000 homes sold and 26 years in the business, Fraida Varah has sold more homes in Albany County than any other realtor.

Find out what homes are selling for in your neighborhood by going to

fraida.com and clicking “What’s Your Home Worth” ...or call us at 438-9302
