2009 Summer Recreati on BrochuresComing Soon!

The 2009 Summer Recreation Brochures will be ready for mailing during the last week of March. Registration for camps will begin on April 1, 2009, and residents will be able to register on-line at www.guilderlandrec.com, by mail or by visiting the Parks & Recreation Office now located across from Tawasentha Park on Route 146, 181 Route 146. Office hours are Monday - Friday 9:00 - 4:30 pm. Residents will be able to view the brochure on-line at www.townofguilderland.org or at www.guilderlandrec.com in mid-March.

Tawasentha Summer Adventure Day Camp will begin on Monday, June 29 and run for three 2-week sessions until August 7, 2009. Camp hours are 8:00 - 11:45 a.m. each day at Tawasentha Park. The Town of Guilderland will also be offering swimming lessons for youth, golf camps and over 100 sports and enrichment camps throughout the summer.

The Guilderland Chamber of Commerce is having a “sale.” For small businesses, it could be one of the best deals they ever got. It is on membership dues so that they can get health insurance for themselves and their employees. “Many small business owners are paying on average $1,000 a month to health insurance companies for health insurance just for one person, “ says Chamber Executi ve Director Kathy Burbank. “Being part of a chamber allows us all as a group to get a discounted rate on health insurance, saving many business owners $600 a month on those premiums! Many small businesses do not know this, or do not know how much they could save!” The “community rate” given by health insurance carriers to chambers and trade associati ons is the same no matt er of the group is 100 or 1,000,

but the cost of the associati on or chamber membership can vary depending on the organizati on.

Why the “sale” on membership? The chamber has an open enrollment period in May for health insurance, where businesses and employees can “shop around” for bett er plans off ered by a chamber. The problem is the state says sole proprietors have to wait 60 days from when they join a chamber and small businesses -30 days, unti l they can get the health insurance. Burbank says “We can’t lower the insurance rates, so it is one thing we can do to help businesses in the area who are in need of health insurance; we are waiving the 2 months cost of membership for sole proprietors and small businesses, so that it is not a deterrent to making the changes that they need. “

Although small businesses are the backbone of our economy, are fl exible in tough economic ti mes, and foster a sense of community, they are hit the hardest when it comes to providing health insurance for owners and their employees. “They become less competi ti ve that way, and have to charge higher prices on goods if they want to retain employees by off ering benefi ts; it’s a shame and it’s not fair, but I feel great when we save a sole proprietor $600 a month!” says Burbank. “It happened over the November and December open enrollment period several ti mes, which prompted the idea for this special.”

The Secret to Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookies

Why is that whenever you see a recipe with the fi nished cookies pictured

and then try to duplicate those cookies they never come out “just right”?

It’s like the fast food commercials that tempt you with a big juicy ham-

burger perfectly sitti ng on a fresh bun and when you actually purchase

the burger, what you get is a shriveled piece of meat stuck between two

fl att ened pieces of bun!

Do you want your chocolate chip cookies to come out soft and chewy

every single ti me? The secret to perfect chocolate chip cookies is really

very simple! And you can make them with any chocolate chip recipe at

your disposal.

The problem with most chocolate chip cookie recipes is they have you

drop a spoonful on a cookie sheet and bake them for 9 to 12 minutes unti l

the tops are golden brown. That is too long! By the ti me the tops are

golden brown, your bott oms are dark brown, or worse, burnt. Aft er the

cookies have baked this long, removing them from the oven in this over-

baked conditi on and having them stand only causes them to harden up

like jawbreakers. Instead of soft , chewy cookies that melt in your mouth,

you end up with hard, crunchy cookies with burnt bott oms.

Dropping larger amounts on the cookie sheet to make bigger cookies

doesn’t work. It takes longer for the middle of the cookie to bake and you

sti ll end up with burnt bott oms and hard cookies.

Instead of following the recipe instructi ons to bake 9 to 12 minutes, under

bake your cookies by a couple of minutes. The fi rst ti me you try this, you

will have to play around with the ti me and the size of your cookie drops

to get the perfect chocolate chip cookie for your oven. But, as a general

rule, aft er you put your cookie tray in your oven (always on the top rack),

set your ti mer for 6 to 8 minutes. When you pull your cookies out, the

enti re top should NOT be golden brown. Instead, the peaks of the top

of the cookie should just be turning brown. At this ti me, the enti re bot-

tom of your cookie is golden brown and the rest of cookie is the same

color as the batt er.

Remove the cookie tray from the oven and let them stand for a minute

or so since the cookies will be incredibly soft and will fall apart if you try

to immediately remove them from the cookie sheet. Aft er they have

fi rmed up a bit, remove them from the cookie sheet to your cooling rack

or a piece of wax paper.

With this method, you are guaranteed to bake the perfect chocolate

chip cookies and have people asking you what YOUR secret is!

Basic Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

2-1/4 cups all-purpose fl our

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

1 cup butt er, soft ened

3/4 cup granulated sugar

3/4 cup packed brown sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 eggs

2 cups semi-sweet chocolate morsels

1 cup chopped nuts (opti onal)

Combine fl our, baking soda and salt in small bowl. Beat butt er, granu-

lated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla in large mixer bowl. Add eggs one

at a ti me, beati ng well aft er each additi on. Gradually beat in fl our mix-

ture. Sti r in morsels and nuts. Drop by teaspoon onto ungreased baking

sheets.

Bake in preheated 375 degree F oven for 6 to 7 minutes or unti l peaks in

top of cookie are starti ng to brown. Let stand for 2 minutes. Remove to

wire racks or wax paper to cool completely.

Q. What year did your business start, and how and why did you get into the business?

A. I was born in Washington, DC and moved to Colonie with my family in the late 1950’s. My Father, Roland Bourgeois started a hearing aid business in the Albany area when hearing aids were described in three ways: behind the ear aids, body aids, or hearing aids in the bow of eyeglasses. I began work in that business in the sixti es aft er a tour of duty with the United States Navy as a Navy Medic att ached to an airwing of the United States Marine Corps and I have conti nued to devote my life to the care of the hearing impaired. Forty-two years of experience makes it possible for me to help people hear as well as they possibly can. I have seen the technology improve greatly with the advent of digital instruments but I also remember a ti me when I was paid for hearing aids in gallons of raw milk!

Q. Are you known for anything special?

A. In the early days, most of my work was done in the home. One of my clients didn’t have a lot of money but she did have a cow and I would leave her home with milk as parti al payment for her hearing aids. I also remember one client who I could only see at the end of the day because she insisted I have a glass of homemade anisett e and Italian cookies with her before I left her home. And then there was Dora, an elderly woman who lived on top of a mountain in Schoharie County. She didn’t

have any running water in her house and I remember lugging jugs of water from the stream outside of her house and bringing them in for her so she could wash her dishes.

Q. Do you sti ll see clients in their homes?

A. Home care is sti ll a major aspect of my business. I put a lot of miles on my vehicle every year, but the number of great friends and acquaintances that I have made through this business far outdistances the number of miles I have put on my car. When you fi t hearing aids, it is important to have conversati ons with your clients so that you can see how they are hearing or if their own voice doesn’t sound right when they speak. I have been privileged to have many spirited conversati ons with my clients about politi cs and religion, and so many other interesti ng subjects. My clients enrich my life well beyond the paycheck.

Q. Besides the hearing aid business, what other things have you done in your life?

A. I am the former President of the Mohonasen music parents, an honorary Girl Scout, and former owner of the skate shop at Achilles Rink at Union College. I have always worked part-ti me in the medical fi eld. I was one of the fi rst of people in New York State to be licensed as an Emergency Medical Technician and I worked evenings for Mohawk Ambulance Service. In 1996 I returned to school on a part-ti me basis and achieved Nati onal Paramedic Certi fi cati on and subsequently,

graduated from Maria College at the age of 60 and I am now a Registered Nurse working part-ti me at St. Peter’s Hospital in their Hospice Unit providing care for the dying and their families. This is some of the most important work I have done in my life. I have recently also begun working part-ti me in the emergency department at St. Peter’s.

Q. Are other family members involved in the business?

A. My wife Corlis does all of the “behind the scenes” work in the business and she is the unsung hero of this business. In additi on to her love and support for my work with the hearing impaired, Corlis is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University at Albany. She is an accomplished writer and arti st. This year she will publish a volume of her poetry and an anthology of people’s stories from all over the country enti tled “When Mother Died.” Her artwork hangs in our offi ce and in the summer she directs an internship program on a remote island off the coast of Maine for college students interested in pursuing a career in art.

Q. What is your policy with regard to pricing and refunds?

A. In the past few years, with the advent of digital hearing aids, prices have escalated. It is my opinion that hearing aids are overpriced and we do our best to provide the highest level of care at the lowest possible price and in most cases, apples for apples, our prices are the lowest in the area. Q. What year did your business start? A. August 2008

Q. Where are you located and were you always in the same locati on?A. My offi ce locati on is: 3 Pine West Plaza, Washington Avenue Extension, Albany, NY 12205. I have been at this locati on since I opened, but I worked as an associate in Corning, NY for 4 years prior to opening my own offi ce.

Q. How and why did you get into the business?A. My sister was diagnosed with scoliosis at a young age and she regularly had chiropracti c adjustments. The benefi ts that she gained from the adjustments at such a young age made a signifi cant impression on me. I decided to become a chiropractor to help people achieve opti mal health, naturally.

Q. Do you have many regular customers? Is there anything specifi c that they are always coming in for?A. All of my pati ents are on correcti ve programs based on specifi c recommendati ons. All of the pati ents are coming in because they have weaknesses in the structure of their spine, which forces pressure on their spinal cord and spinal nerves. They come to my offi ce to fi x these weaknesses, which will relieve pressure on their nerves and allow the nervous system to work at 100%.

Q. Are you known for anything special?A. I am the only correcti ve care chiropractor in Albany. Correcti ve care chiropractors identi fy weaknesses in the structure of the spine and off er scienti fi cally-proven safe and eff ecti ve soluti ons. When weaknesses in the spine are corrected, a person will have less pressure on their nervous system, which will allow their body to functi on opti mally. Correcti ve care chiropractors focus on minimizing subluxati on,

which are misalignments in the spine that force pressure on the spinal cord and spinal nerves. Subluxati ons are caused by emoti onal, chemical and physical stress, of which correcti ve care chiropractors focus on the physical stress. It is preventati ve care. Relief care chiropractors focus on pain management. Once the pati ent is out of pain, they do not perpetuate care. It is short-term relief, without addressing the problem. It is reacti ve care. It is important to have two types of chiropracti c care so that a pati ent has a choice based on their health goals.

Q. What hours are you open? A. 8-12 and 2-6 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays; Tuesdays from 2-6 with a free half-hour to health workshop from 12-12:30 PM.

Q. What do you love most about the business? A. Helping people achieve their health goals, big or small.

Q. What do you think is your biggest challenge with the business?A. Many people think that chiropractors are only needed when they have some type of pain. What people do not realize is they should take care of their spine from the start of their life, like they do their teeth, eyes, etc. The biggest challenge is trying to explain this to people who have a specifi c mindset regarding chiropracti c.

Q. . What do you want the community to know about you? A. Every person should have a spinal check-up at least once in their lives. In accordance with this, my offi ce off ers reduced-fee spinal check-ups on a regular basis. Any guest that comes to my free workshop is off ered a complimentary spinal check-up.

Would You Like to Serve on the Library’s Board of Trustees?

If you have a desire to serve the Guilderland community in an electi ve capacity, one great place to start is on the Library’s Board of Trustees. These eleven offi cials, in the words of the Handbook for Library Trustees of New York State “…make policy and fi scal decisions crucial to the life and directi on of the library. Their decisions impact the lives of people and the future of their community. Library trustees are responsible to the library and to the public it serves…and must be ti reless advocates for improving library services.” Two seats on the board will be up for electi on this May. If running for one of these offi ces interests you, your fi rst step is to pick up a Trustee Packet, either at the Library or the School District Offi ces on State Farm Road. Applicants may be incumbents or new candidates. You must be 18 years or older, and reside in the Guilderland School District.Anyone picking up a packet must sign his or her name, address and phone number on a sheet that will be provided. This informati on is required and retained by the School District. Each packet includes a two-page informati onal sheet ti tled On Being a Board Member; this gives prospecti ve candidates an idea of what the positi on entails. The piece talked about the increase in library card signup on a national basis and informed the audience how Los Angeles public libraries had 18 million visitors in 2008, two million more than the previous year. GUILDERLAND, NY—The Guilderland Central School District is pleased to announce that students from Farnsworth Middle School recently won the ninth-annual IEEE-USA Best Communications System Award at the National Engineers Week Future City Competition National Finals. In addition, the FMS team placed 10th

out of 38 teams in the overall 2009 National Future City Competition.

Farnsworth earned its trip to the nation’s capital by winning the New York (Albany) regional Future City competition last month. This is the fourth year in a row that students from FMS have taken home the top regional prize.

The FMS team included student-presenters Zubin Mukerjee, Abigail Schooner and Joseph Sipzner; extended team members Isaac Malsy, Matt Gu, Adam Janover, Michelle Xiong, Edmund Doyle, Jake Van Buren, David Lasselle, Laura Chevalier and Sid Varma; team advisors and FMS teachers Deborah Escobar and Tom McGreevy; and engineer-mentor Robert Sipzner, P.E.

Their winning city, “Cibola,” is set in 2237 in Pando, Bolivia on the Madre de Dios River.

Farnsworth was recognized for the most “effi cient and accurate communications system” at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill.

A hand-held “Personal Education Device,” or PED, is the featured element of Farnsworth’s communications system. The PED utilizes a contact lens to reconstruct important events into a video to help students learn. In addition, students can go on virtual fi eld trips through holographic imaging. The holograms also allow youngsters to transport themselves virtually so they can communicate with others anywhere in the world.

Wally Lee and Monica Mallini, both of Alexandria, Va., selected Farnsworth from among the 38 regional championship teams that competed at the fi nals.

“They gave thorough consideration to the capabilities and limitations of the technologies, including a consideration of spectrum crowding and frequency collisions,” Mallini said after Monday’s judging. “This distinguished them from the other teams.

“They were focused on learning, and their presentation was very descriptive over several applications and features of the system.”

The Future City Competition is designed to promote technological literacy and engineering to middle school students. Under the guidance of an engineer and teacher, the children create their own vision of a future city, working fi rst on computer and then constructing three-dimensional scale models.

The students also have to write an essay about a predetermined challenge the city might face. This year’s theme was “to design systems to conserve and reuse our most precious resource,” water. The fi nal piece of the contest is a presentation before a panel of judges.

More than 1,100 schools and 30,000 students from across the United States competed during the 2008-09 season.

Q. What is the biggest challenge for you in this business?

A. The biggest challenge is convincing someone to let me try a hearing aid on them so that they can see how much bett er they will hear. Oft en people come to me who have been fi t poorly, the aid that they have been fi t with amplifi es too much sound and they just don’t like wearing them. My challenge is to convince them that 40 years has taught me a lot about how to fi t a hearing aid and I am able to fi t hearing aids so that they will want to wear them. Another challenge is getti ng the word out to people that it is always wise to get a second opinion before purchasing anything and we provide that second opinion consultati on at no charge.

Q. What do you want the community to know about you?

A. I want the community to know that I have their best interest at my heart and I live by the Golden Rule.

A. I see clients in offi ces in Albany, Amsterdam, Schenectady and Cobleskill and, as I said, in their homes. There is no extra charge for home service.
